West Indies Women defend 114 and knock India Women out

Not even the support of a festive home crowd and conditions they thrive could inspire India Women as they slumped to a three-run loss to West Indies Women in Mohali. The defeat brought the curtains down on India’s disappointing World Twenty20 campaign.Jhulan Goswami, who bowled all of two overs on a slow surface, kept India alive with a few lusty blows that brought the equation down to 20 off the last two overs. Tension engulfed the PCA Stadium, but a crowd that was on tenterhooks roared in delight as the third ball of the penultimate over sailed over long-on to bring it down to 12 off nine balls. But her run-out off the next delivery, once again, meant the pendulum swung West Indies’ way. Deandra Dottin, who ensured West Indies were in with a chance by making 45 off 40 balls in the team’s total of 114 for 8, then showed immaculate death-bowling skills to leave India short-changed. Shikha Pandey, who carved a boundary over point to bring it down to five off three balls was run-out off the next delivery to effectively dash India’s hopes.India landed the early punches and weakened West Indies to 26 for 3 as the contest was reduced to a battle of spin attacks. The hosts then switched off for a bit, only to see Stafanie Taylor and Dottin regain lost ground, and then lift West Indies with a fourth-wicket partnership of 77 that gave the bowlers a handy total to defend.India were dealt an early blow in their chase as Mithali Raj fell for a golden duck, leaving the young middle to lead the recovery. But West Indies, who learnt a thing or two from India, stifled the hosts’ challenge with spin. Equally impressive was their ground fielding that helped them save at least 10 runs. In the end, it proved to be the clincher for West Indies, as they put one foot in the door to the semi-finals. West Indies now await the result of the England-Pakistan clash in Chennai.Raj’s glee at winning the toss wasn’t lost on anyone. And the team justified the decision by choking West Indies with spin, as the top order tangled themselves by playing for turn when there wasn’t much. Taylor and Dottin, known for their firebrand approach, tempered down to milk India’s spinners, taking as many as 38 singles in their partnership to set up a platform for the final flourish.West Indies kept waiting for India’s spinners to finish their quota of overs, but they kept arriving like a factory line, leaving Taylor and Dottin to force the pace. That they did in their own unique style. While Taylor turned to pick singles, Dottin used the crease well to smother the spin and bring out fierce sweeps and delicate dabs that kept India honest. Not even an outstanding catch by Anuja Patil at long-on could lift them out of a hole they got into; 30 minutes of indiscretion on the field allowing West Indies to get 20 more than what India would have liked to keep them to.In their chase, there was early panic that was exemplified by Veda Krishnamurthy’s ill-timed pull to midwicket to leave India in strife at 22 for 2. Harmanpreet Kaur scratched around to not just elevate the asking rate, but also put pressure on Smriti Mandhana.Kaur’s dismissal for a 20-ball 7 left the middle order with unenviable task of hitting out right from the outset. When Mandhana chopped on for 22, there was proper panic. Hard as the lower order tried, they couldn’t bridge the gap, with the lapses on the field eventually proving the difference between the two sides.

Amla and de Villiers flay West Indies

Moonda: South Africa can do something special

When a third wicket fell in 15 balls during the morning session, possibilities for the opening day at Centurion abounded but the final outcome involved two very common sights: Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers with hundreds to their name. The pair came together on 57 for 3 following the loss of three wickets for no runs either side of drinks as West Indies briefly found their venom and they were not separated for the rest of the day. There was added significance in both hundreds, for Amla it was his first Test as captain on home soil and for de Villiers it marked 10 years to the day since he made his Test debut against England, at Port Elizabeth – a match that also marked the first appearance for Dale Steyn.Their stand at the close was worth a fourth-wicket South Africa record 283 in 75 overs – 115 runs coming between lunch and tea – the run rate highlighting both the counter-attacking nature of the batting and also the number of scoring opportunities offered by the West Indies attack.Only Kemar Roach ended in credit, his first spell have been an exacting six overs worth 2 for 16, but there was the worrying sight of him hobbling off the field five balls into his 16th over with what appeared to be an ankle injury. With Roach off the ground, the day ended with the dispiriting sight of Sulieman Benn, Marlon Samuels and Kraigg Braithwaite going through overs of spin with the old ball.AB de Villiers guided South Africa to a strong position with his 37th Test fifty•AFPDe Villiers was first to the three figures, his 20th hundred in Tests, from 138 balls and Amla followed a short while later from 161 deliveries, his first century against West Indies which leaves only Zimbabwe for him to tick off. Both had a stroke of fortune; one a slice of outrageous luck and the other a sloppy mistake by West Indies in the field. The first significant moment came shortly after lunch when Amla was on 25 and Roach beat the edge with another wicked legcutter, the ball clipped the off stump but the bails refused to fall to the ground. Later, there was a self-induced error when de Villiers was 63, Benn could not collect a throw at the stumps with the batsmen well short of his ground.De Villiers struck two sixes, advancing at Benn and Samuels, but neither batsman had to go out of their way to keep the scoring rate high with most overs offering a scoring opportunity. Still, the driving from both was, as ever, a joy to behold. Jerome Taylor – who was the biggest let down for West Indies – regularly offered up width, and Sheldon Cottrell managed just three maidens between them in 35 overs.West Indies were playing their first international since the contracts dispute which led them to withdrawing from the India series in October and they did not seem in gear for a Test series. Play was delayed by half an hour due to early morning rain and the skies remained heavy as Denesh Ramdin and Amla emerged for the toss. It was no surprise when Ramdin was quick to insert South Africa. But the West Indies quicks did not get the memo regarding conditions and could not find a consistent line and length in the early exchanges: the first 10 overs brought nine boundaries, six to Alviro Petersen and three to Dean Elgar.Roach, surprisingly, was not given the new ball and by the time he came into the attack South Africa already had 44 on the board in nine overs. He brought menace and consistency to the attack, started to build up some pressure and was rewarded with Petersen’s edge with a delivery which straightened and went to first slip. The message was starting to reach the West Indies bowlers and Cottrell’s second spell began to offer a double-pronged threat as the runs dried up.While Petersen received a decent delivery to end his stay, that could not be said for Elgar who helped a short, wide offering from Cottrell to gully – an awful waste for a batsman in conditions when a good ball is never far away. Cottrell, the former soldier, who used to stand guard at Sabina Park before turning his hand to fast bowling, gave a salute as Samuels held the chance.West Indies were buoyed and a few moments later were ecstatic when Roach’s probing line found Faf du Plessis’ outside edge – his first Test duck in his 29th innings – and the third wicket fell with the score on 57. It was an opening for West Indies but they were not good enough to force through it. Whether they get another opportunity, in this match or even the series, remains to be seen.

Jaques rubber-stamps Notts great day

ScorecardPhil Jaques raced to a century from 109 balls•Getty Images

Sometimes you turn up expecting to see one thing, then it turns out you see something completely different. Today was one of those days. This was supposed to be a tight tussle between the second and third sides in the County Championship. That is not what we got.Phil Jaques and Steven Mullaney lodged an opening partnership of 203 for Nottinghamshire on a balmy evening at Trent Bridge after their bowlers had seen off Somerset for 168. All this was despite an admirable innings by Marcus Trescothick, Somerset’s captain.Trescothick is the most admired player among his County Championship colleagues, and today’s effort demonstrated why. He held a very shaky fort for Somerset throughout both of the first two sessions. He ground his way to 87 while the highest other score was 17, and five other batsmen went for four runs or fewer.Harry Gurney and Andre Adams were the pick of the Nottinghamshire bowlers. They had almost identical figures – 3 wickets each – and between them undermined the Somerset effort.Nottinghamshire were hoping to get the best out of Peter Siddle, who was expecting to spend the whole season with the county but has been summoned home by Cricket Australia. This will be the first of his last three Championship games for Notts, for this year at least. And he didn’t disappoint, taking just two wickets, but crucially seeing off Trescothick at the back end of the Somerset innings.Notts had Somerset under the cosh before and after lunch on a green pitch and in warm, muggy conditions. The Somerset skipper was watchful and dogged, and went into lunch on 44 from 76 balls. He earned the reprieve that Samit Patel granted him when he was on 22, a drop at second slip off Harry Gurney that should really have been takenPatel has carried with him a reputation for not being the most nimble of cricketers. You wouldn’t know it from the way in which he made amends here. Peter Siddle returned for a new spell at the Pavilion End. Off its first ball Trescothick flashed outside the off stump, and Patel held a stunning, leaping, one-handed catch at second slip.Once Nottinghamshire began their reply the green tint that had been evident on the pitch in the morning was all but gone. Jaques and Mullaney made merry. Jaques’ undefeated 111 was chanceless, and he was ruthless through the off side. He will take 18 boundaries into day two.Mullaney, more diminutive-looking than his recorded 5′ 10″, holed out to square leg when just nine short of a well-deserved century of his own. He had only 138 Championship runs from nine innings prior to this innings, but he looked like the real deal here. These are early days in the match, but it looks as if Chris Read might not be regretting losing the toss this morning.

Competition wide open – McCullum

If Brendon McCullum had a dollar for every time New Zealand are referred to as the dark horses at a global tournament, he would still not have as much as the $750,000 Corey Anderson was bought for in last month’s IPL auction.New Zealand face England on Saturday evening in the second Group 1 match and the teams’ recent experiences could not be further apart. While New Zealand went through the southern summer winning both of their home Test series as well as beating India in ODIs and reigning World T20 champions West Indies in the shortest format, England suffered on a horrendous tour of Australia and then achieved mixed results in the Caribbean.Another gap between the sides could be the relative power of each batting line-up. England are perceived to be a little light on rope-clearing fortitude – Stuart Broad talked about the importance of “skilful placement” on Friday – but in McCullum New Zealand have the leading run-scorer in T20 internationals. Then there is Anderson, who was bought by Mumbai Indians after scoring the fastest-ever one-day century, off 36 balls, in January. His highest T20 score for New Zealand is just 18 but an ODI strike rate of 159.39 is indicative of what he can do.Even when such things are taken into account, teams are wary of making predictions. In the last two days alone, Netherlands and Hong Kong have ably demonstrated the potential for upset at the World T20. Spin had been expected to determine the fate of most teams but a quicker, skiddy Chittagong surface is also forcing people to re-evaluate expectations.”England are a huge challenge,” McCullum said. “This competition is so wide open, it’s hard to get a read on form lines, who’s going to be the most dangerous team. We’ve been through some preparation and scouting, fine-tuning our plans and it’s a matter of executing them against a very good England team initially.”It’s really important that we adapt to the conditions quickly. These conditions in Bangladesh will probably suit both us and England, more so than the subcontinent teams. If we start well we can get some confidence and build some momentum as the tournament goes on.”England have been training with wet balls to try and prepare for the possibility of dew affecting evening games and McCullum agreed that could be another key factor. “I don’t anticipate spin will play a great role from the point of seeing the ball turn and bounce past the bat,” he said. “Good spinners still manage to play a vital role in T20 cricket but it just won’t be quite the same role that we’ll see up the road in Dhaka.”Kane Williamson, more of a strokeplayer than a slugger, will open the batting but the presence of Martin Guptill alongside him, followed by McCullum and Ross Taylor, gives New Zealand plenty of firepower; in their most recent warm-up match, they fell just short of chasing 200 against Australia. Anderson could be the wrecking ball that elevates them into the bracket of title contenders.”He is an incredible talent,” McCullum said. “The hundred he got against West Indies was sublime hitting from ball one. He is one of those guys who when he does get himself in, he wins a game pretty quickly.”Jimmy Neesham is another one who can be pretty exciting and those two balance your team quite nicely. But they have not played a great deal of cricket on the big stage, so it’s going to be a challenge for them and hopefully we sit back in three weeks’ time and say that not just New Zealand but those guys in particular really stood up and grabbed the opportunity at this World T20.”Asked about New Zealand’s overall chances, McCullum said he believed winning the 2015 World Cup in home conditions was a more realistic prospect. Beating England and getting a fast start in a group that also contains the No. 1 side, Sri Lanka, as well as South Africa and Netherlands, would be the starting point in changing his mind.”We’ve got the personnel and if we get it right early and get the some momentum going and nail our gameplan the way we want to, then I think we can be dangerous. But we’ve got to make sure we’re right on top because these conditions will be quite challenging and the nature of the game as well, you’re going to need a bit of luck. Hopefully luck favours us this time.”Two years ago, New Zealand lost to England during a disappointing World T20 campaign, as they entered a turbulent period in which McCullum took over the captaincy from Taylor in acrimonious circumstances. England’s position now is not dissimilar and they will be hoping for a similar swing in fortunes. McCullum will be aiming to ensure it doesn’t begin yet.

No chairman yet for Bangladesh selection panel

Bangladesh’s selection committee remains without a chairman after the BCB’s board of directors couldn’t decide whether it should reappoint Faruque Ahmed or choose from one of the incumbent selectors. The post had become vacant after Akram Khan decided to contest BCB elections last month. There was speculation that Faruque, who was chief selector between 2003 and 2007, would be ask to return to a role he executed with some success. He was instrumental in Bangladesh’s best World Cup campaign, when they made it to the second round in 2007. Faruque also gave opportunities to youngsters like Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim. After leaving the job, he was involved in domestic cricket as an advisor to the Rajshahi franchise in the 2012 BPL and the Rangpur franchise in 2013.While Faruque has his backers in the board, there are others more inclined towards Minhazul Abedin, a current selector, and according BCB chairman Nazmul Hassan even Khaled Mashud, another former Bangladesh captain, has support.Picking the chief selector was on the agenda of today’s meeting but the BCB decided to take a few extra days to make a decision. “There has been a discussion regarding the position of chief selector,” Nazmul said. “Faruque Ahmed has been significantly mentioned, while Minhazul Abedin, Khaled Mashud and Habibul Bashar are also in the fray. We will make a decision within a day or two.”Akram, who was elected BCB director unopposed in elections last month, was named chairman of the cricket operations committee. Khaled Mahmud, who won the directorship in the election, was made chairman of game development committee. Naimur Rahman was made head of the age-group tournament committee. Gazi Golam Mortuza replaced Naimur as the chairman of the tournament committee while AJM Nasiruddin, the Brothers Union official, was named chairman of Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), the body that runs the Dhaka leagues.Nazmul warned the committee heads of doing their jobs properly. “We have given them the responsibility for six months. Whether they will be given a longer term will depend on their performances.” Nazmul also said a decision on the two BCB vice-presidents will be taken on December 4, possibly through secret ballot if there were more than two directors interested.
