Wolves’ Neves touted to stay at Molineux

In their first season under manager Bruno Lage, Wolves have had a pretty solid Premier League campaign so far with 37 points on the board from 23 games played, putting them in seventh place in the league table.

However, it appears as though Wolves’ final position by the end of the season could potentially play an important factor in the future of one of their key players.

What’s the talk?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, transfer insider Dean Jones had this to say about the future of Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves, who has been linked with a move away from the Midlands club in the past with fellow Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester United mentioned as potential suitors.

He revealed: “I don’t think he would look to move. If Wolves have European football next season, I think he would be content to stay where he is.”

Neves joined the Old Gold back in the 2017 summer transfer window from Portuguese club FC Porto in a deal worth a reported fee of £15.8m when Wolves were still in the Championship.

Since then, the midfielder has gone on to cement himself as a crucial figure for the team by racking up a total of 200 appearances across all competitions with 22 goals and 11 assists under his belt.

Lage will be buzzing

With their solid season so far, Lage will surely be buzzing that securing European football this season could lead to Neves’ potential stay during the upcoming summer transfer window.

Having earned himself an overall season rating of 6.84/10, making him the fifth-highest rated outfield player currently in Lage’s squad according to WhoScored, it’s safe to say that top clubs would be interested in signing the Portuguese international and that he would be a big miss for the Old Gold if he were to leave.

Moving forward, if the 24-year-old’s Wolves future depends on it, this will be another incentive for Lage to make sure his side finish as high up the table as possible this season.

However, with the midfielder sharing his love and admiration for the club and the area he’s been in for the past few years, this could be a reassuring sign that he would be willing to stay at Molineux beyond this season.

Indeed, after an impressive victory away at fellow European challengers Spurs at the weekend, Wolves have left themselves in a good position to secure some kind of European football, and that will have Lage optimistic at the thought of keeping hold of Neves come the summer.

Wolves backed to sign Trincao permanently

Wolves could sign Francisco Trincao permanently in a swap deal with Adama Traore if his form picks up to the end of the season, according to transfer expert Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Up-and-down loan spell

The 22-year-old joined Wanderers on loan last summer, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Barcelona, for the time being at least.

Trincao looked impressive in the early weeks of the season – John Ruddy described him as ‘very smooth’ – but in truth, his performance has tailed off a little, with no goals or assists coming his way in 19 Premier League appearances.

The hope is that he makes a bigger impact between now and May and it could be decisive in terms of his long-term future.

The Latest: Journalist backs permanent move

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed that he could see a scenario where Trincao heads to Wolves permanently as Traore goes the other way to Barcelona for good:

“I think it’s fair to say Trincao has obviously got talent. If he has a good end to the season, I think Wolves will maybe look more favourably on a swap deal.

“But if it doesn’t end too well for Trincao, maybe they might look elsewhere to replace Traore and get that money from Barcelona if they can.”

The Verdict: Is it worth it?

At 22, it is important not to judge Trincao too harshly in his first season in England, but he has flattered to deceive in a Wolves shirt, with his aforementioned statistics summing him up – plenty of talent, no end product.

While he could end up thriving at Molineux if they signed him permanently, it could be argued that there are more prolific options out there ahead of the summer window, as O’Rourke alludes to.

Not only that but Pedro Neto will be back in the team soon, and assuming he returns the same player as before, he will further limit Trincao’s hopes of being a key man into the future.

Gold reveals Traore twist at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur appear to still be confident in securing Adama Traore despite the time it’s taking to get the deal over the line…

What’s the word?

That’s according to football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, who has hinted at there being a twist in the transfer saga heading into next Monday’s transfer deadline.

“Slightly different noises coming from all three sides of the Adama Traore transfer. Still a belief that it will happen eventually but it’s interesting to see the different takes on exactly what’s happened so far and that state it’s at right now,” he said on Twitter.

In an accompanying article, it’s claimed that Spurs are yet to make their move for Traore, despite reports of a £15m bid being rejected last week.

The expected move for the Spain international is being driven by sporting director Fabio Paratici, who tried to sign him during his time in charge of Juventus, whilst manager Antonio Conte is open to the signing as he fits the mould of that attacking right wing-back he desires.

There is a confidence that a deal can be struck before deadline day but the contrasting noises are certainly cause for concern for much of the Lilywhites faithful.

Twist in the tale?

It would be a travesty for the north London outfit to miss out on one of their reported top targets, especially as they have been linked with a move for him all month.

To leave it this late is bad enough but if they were to avoid signing him entirely, then it’s going to cause some uproar in both the Spurs dugout and in the stands.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

One outlet suggests £20m will be enough to secure him, whilst another believes Wolves are looking for a deal in the region of £30m. These are all intricacies that should have been dealt with earlier in the month because we’re now in the final five days of the window with nothing to show for it.

There have even been reported fears amongst some players at Hotspur Way that the Italian head coach, who has a Premier League and FA Cup to his name, will walk from the club if he’s not backed this window.

With Conte not trusting summer signing Emerson Royal in the right wing-back role, it would be wise to consider a move for one of the most “unplayable” threats in the division.

As this deal continues to rumble on, so will the fans’ anger as they too want to see their world-class head coach backed financially. The squad really needs some more quality and Traore would add that.

Leander Dendoncker unlikely to leave Wolves

Wolves midfielder Leander Dendoncker is not expected to leave the club at the end of the season, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Dendoncker continues to shine for Wolves

Dendoncker has been a strong performer at Molineux over a sustained period. The Belgian has made 148 appearances for Wolves, starting 15 Premier League games this season and being hailed as ‘brilliant’ by team-mate Max Kilman.

However, the 26-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of next season, so this summer could be the last opportunity for Wanderers to receive a fee for him unless he signs a new deal.

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Latest: Journalist discusses Dendoncker’s future

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke has backed the midfielder to stay put at Molineux, admitting that it would be a surprise if Wolves were to entertain letting him leave, despite some reports to the contrary.

The journalist stated: “I’d be surprised if Wolves listen to offers for Dendoncker.”

[freshpress-quiz id=“388797″]

The Verdict: Important squad figure

Dendoncker may not be one of the leading cast members in this Wolves side – he is ranked outside their top 10 performers as per WhoScored and has only started half of his team’s league matches so far this term – but he is still an influential figure who is well worth retaining.

He is often a strong foil for more creative midfielders such as Neves and Joao Moutinho, with his 95.8% pass completion rate in the Carabao Cup this season highlighting his ball retention skills.

At 26, Dendoncker is also in and around his peak years, so it would make sense to extend his stay at Wolves eventually before they potential risk losing him on a free transfer in 2023.

Zulfiqar stuns Punjab Stallions

ScorecardLeft-arm spinner Zulfiqar Babar bowled an astonishing spell, taking 6 for 10 in eight overs, to help Baluchistan Bears defend a low total against Punjab Stallions in Karachi. It was a low-scoring contest at the National Stadium, with 20 wickets falling for 258 runs in 74.3 overs.Punjab would have fancied their chances of pulling off a victory after their bowlers restricted Baluchistan to 149, and even more so after their openers added 45. The seven-foot fast bowler Mohammad Irfan, however, jolted the chase by striking twice in the 12th over, leaving Punjab on 45 for 2.Another partnership of 38 followed before Zulfiqar began his act. He ripped out the next five wickets for only 20 runs, leaving the chase in tatters at 103 for 7. He claimed one more, his sixth, and Jalat Khan chipped in with two, including the final wicket of Asad Ali, with the score on 109 in the 34th over.Baluchistan had earlier scraped to 149 after collapsing from 20 for 0 to 23 for 5, with Asad Ali and Mohammad Talha causing the damage. Taufeeq Umar steadied the innings with 57 and Jalat contributed 38, which gave their bowlers a defendable score.

Inexperience cost Rajasthan – Warne

Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has said the inexperience of some players has been a crucial factor in his side’s early exit from the tournament

Cricinfo staff17-Apr-2010Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has said the inexperience of some players has been a crucial factor in his side’s early exit from the tournament. Rajasthan were beaten by eight wickets in a must-win game against Kolkata Knight Riders, depriving them of a semi-final slot for the second successive time, after having won the inaugural edition.”Inexperience has cost us in certain big moments,” Warne said after the game. “When you don’t have experience in tough situations you may have some tendency to panic. It is really disappointing not to qualify for the semi-finals.”Rajasthan began the tournament on a poor note, losing their first three games but fought back to win four in a row. But they ended disappointingly, with three consecutive defeats after proving strong contenders for a place in the final four. “To win six games out of eight after losing three in a row shows a lot of character,” Warne said. “Unfortunately there was pressure in the last three games and it all boiled down to this one. I think our inexperienced showed.”Rajasthan were restricted to a below-par 132 on a slowish track in Kolkata after Shane Watson had delivered an attacking start, and failed to defend it as a result of a half-century from Sourav Ganguly. “We did not get enough runs after a good start,” Warne said. “We tried everything, different field to get a wicket but it did not happen. As captain and coach I take full responsibility. I take full responsibility for three losses in a row.”When asked if he would return for the fourth edition of the IPL next year, Warne said: “I am not sure, to be honest. I think I am still good at captaincy and also bowling pretty well.”It’s a completely different set up next year. It depends whether there will be retention by the franchisees or everyone going up for auction. For me it’s all about enjoyment. I think I am fit enough.”Ganguly starred for Kolkata in the field and with the bat, taking a stunning catch to dismiss Yusuf Pathan and following it up with an unbeaten 75 to steer his team home. The win keeps Kolkata’s semi-final hopes alive, though they need to beat Mumbai Indians and wish for other results to go their way to qualify. “We have played some outstanding cricket, have been poor at times like the game against Punjab and Bangalore recently. We lost the way. We have let important moments slip out also,” Ganguly said.Kolkata had lost Brendon McCullum and Chris Gayle early in their chase, but an unbeaten 111-run stand between Ganguly and Cheteshwar Pujara saw them through. Kolkata needed to win big, but pair opted for a game of caution before opening up following the time-out to ensure victory with 23 balls to spare. “It was a difficult wicket, it was turning and stopping also. We lost two wickets, we needed to build a partnership,” Ganguly said. “First think about winning the game before thinking about the run-rate. If we don’t win the game then run-rate does not matter.”

Hauritz turns from optional extra to essential

Nathan Hauritz is almost doing it all for Australia. He exceeded expectations during the Ashes, has become the essential offspinner in the one-day arena, coped with Sachin Tendulkar in full flight and helped win the Champions League Twenty20 for New South Wales with one brave flighted ball to Kieron Pollard. Those experiences have turned Hauritz from a figure of fun into a respected operator and the only thing he needs to polish his resume is a consistent run in the Test side. Prior to England he was picked because there was no one else, but since then he has been chosen because the side needs him. The only omissions were Leeds, when the pitch was green and Australia won in three days, and The Oval. How the selectors and team management misread the surface in south London and ruled out a spinner ranks alongside Clarrie Grimmett missing the 1938 England tour as one of Australian cricket’s greatest slow-bowling mysteries.Hauritz had carried a sore heel through the series and it had deteriorated slightly, but there was “no way in the world it would have stopped me bowling”. Instead Australia went with four quicks, Marcus North delivered 44 overs of part-timers, Graeme Swann, England’s specialist, took eight wickets and the hosts regained the urn.Being overlooked for that game ensures Hauritz will play at the Gabba on Thursday because the selectors won’t want to put themselves through the doubt and pain of relying on an all-pace attack. It would be no surprise if the outlook lasted all summer.”It would be good,” Hauritz said. “I’m in control of that, to play back-to-back Tests. If I bowl well in this one, the next one comes up.” His cricket journey has taught him not to look far ahead, but his improvement is winning him many admirers.Ricky Ponting is much more comfortable with Hauritz in his line-up and wants him to grab the spinning role for this series and beyond. “I’ve been really impressed with how he’s gone about his cricket over the last 12 months almost, his performances in the early Test matches of the Ashes series were very good,” he said. “They probably exceeded some of our expectations on the way we thought he could bowl, so that was a real positive.”His one-day cricket has been outstanding, he’s always been a very good one-day bowler anyway, and we want to keep developing him as a Test bowler. He’ll get a good opportunity to do that over the next few days.”Shane Warne judges players on how they develop and is pleased with the direction Hauritz is moving, calling him “the star of the Ashes series”. “When he first started playing for Australia to now he has improved, so I think he’s doing a pretty good job and I think he’ll bowl well out here during the Test. It’s a really nice place to bowl spin in Test matches.”Hauritz isn’t as glowing in his appraisal of the surface and wants to remind supporters how some of his predecessors have gone. “The hardest thing that the public forgets is we have had Murali and Harbhajan over here and they’re the two best [offspinners] in the world for me,” he said. “Those guys have hardly done anything at all on Australian wickets. The Gabba can be a tough place to bowl, the bounce is so true, it doesn’t move off, and the batsmen basically wait on you all day.”If there is a little bit of turn he will be happier and will be able to aim more easily for catches to the slips and close-in fielders. The West Indies line-up also includes a lengthy list of left-handers, including the captain Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash. Hauritz is excited by the prospect of bowling to them but remains grounded. “It’s definitely a lot better to bowl to a lot of left-handers than consistently to right-handers,” he said. “It’s just cricket.”

A gente sabe a qualidade individual do Atlético-MG. Falo do Fred, Robinho, Elias, Luan…
