Should Everton sign Rafael Leao?

After losing one of the most pedigreed manager’s Everton have ever had, it’s a testing time for the club’s owners and directors.

Trying to replace Carlo Ancelotti will be no easy task but they must do so adequately if they ever want to achieve their goal of Champions League football.

What’s the word?

If losing the Italian wasn’t bad enough, they could also witness their star striker leave this summer.

Manchester United were interested in signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin a few months ago but now Ancelotti’s new side, Real Madrid, are reportedly pursuing him.

With that in mind, the Toffees will need to acquire a new striker. They could find that in AC Milan’s Rafael Leao.

Reports first emerged of a potential move several months ago but according to a fresh story from Calcio Mercato (via Daily Mail), it’s believed Everton are among the front runners for the 22-year-old.

The Toffees and Wolves are both interested parties and they may only have to part ways with £24m in order to prise him away from the San Siro.

DCL replacement

If Calvert-Lewin does head for the exit door then the new manager will desperately need to find a new centre-forward.

The Englishman was crucial for Everton last term, proving to be the only player to find the net more than ten times in the Premier League. During top-flight action, he scored 16 goals which took his tally in all competitions to 21 strikes.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Leao could be an adequate replacement and he’d also provide versatility. The young Portuguese is capable of playing through the middle but also on the flanks.

That being said, they will have to be cautious over his discipline and mentality. Taking to Twitter after he was usurped in Portugal’s U21 squad this summer, reporter Zach Lowy commented:

“The fact that Dany Mota — a player at Monza — and Gonçalo Ramos — a benchwarmer at Benfica — overshadowed Rafael Leão during the U-21 Euros should serve as a wake-up call for him. He needs to drastically change his mentality or he’ll be leaving Milan sooner rather than later.”

That doesn’t bode too well for Everton but if you assess his qualities on the field of play, he instantly becomes a no-brainer, especially at £24m.

Leao scored seven goals last term and registered six assists in all competitions. Those aren’t the most striking of numbers but it proves he has end product when he gets into a promising area.

He also has attributes that can utterly terrify defenders. Former striker Rolando Bianchi once said: “I had seen him at the U20 World Cup with Portugal and he made spectacular plays. He has great speed, he has a touch of the ball.”

His ability to beat a player is what sets him apart from many in the modern game. Calvert-Lewin is a ruthless forward but his qualities lie mainly in his aerial ability and muscular strength.

Leao, on the other hand, has been compared to the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Ronaldo Nazario.

In a scout report by Jacek Kulig, he notes the forward’s “blistering pace” and “excellent balance.”

On that note, he’s more comparable to Richarlison in the Everton frontline. An exponent of flair and trickery, he’d be a wonderful addition to the Toffees if he can correct his attitude.

At the age of 22, he has incredibly high potential, something Marcel Brands needs to ensure is extracted at Goodison Park.

AND in other news, Benitez can win over Everton fans by signing 94-cap gem he tipped to become “the best”…

Everton: Kenwright begins Moyes talks

With around 40 head coaches from the football sphere all taking an interest in the Everton job, Farhad Moshiri and co have a big dilemma on their hands.

They never expected to lose Carlo Ancelotti in the way they did but they are back at square one with a lack of clarity on their future.

What’s the word?

Everton have been in talks with Nuno Santo over the last few days but it would appear the Toffees are still considering other suitors.

Bill Kenwright has been keen on bringing David Moyes back to Goodison Park and he’s now progressed in his efforts to do so.

According to Football Insider, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has opened discussions with Moyes about returning to Merseyside.

An informal approach has been made to the 58-year-old who is keen on becoming the new Everton manager. That being said, he is also content to remain at West Ham.

The best candidate?

Everton have a lengthy list of managers they could look to bring to Goodison.

Former Wolves boss, Nuno, has been at the height of their agenda so far but would be an unconvincing choice.

He may have taken the Old Gold from mid-table obscurity in the second tier to European football but his football wasn’t the most attacking and he wasn’t very flexible when it came to tactical decisions.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-and-transfer-news-ancelotti-moshiri-fonseca-howe-moyes” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Rafa Benitez would also be a gamble from the Toffees hierarchy. He’s won the Champions League and is one of the most highly thought of head coaches in the game but his stock has fallen after a mixed spell at Newcastle and then in China.

Moyes, on the other hand, has proven himself as recently as this season. The Scot took West Ham from relegation candidates to the verge of a place in the Champions League.

The Hammers ultimately fell short of Europe’s top table but it was a stunning season where Moyes’ team looked organised in defence and a threat on the counter.

Gary Neville described him as “exceptional” for the work he’s done this season and with a contract renewal yet to take place at the London Stadium, Everton should be tempting for him.

He knows the club, he knows the senior officials and he is familiar with achieving above expectations.

Everton are desperate for Champions League football and the only manager to give them that in the last two decades is Moyes. For Kenwright and co, he is surely the best candidate.

AND in other news, Brands keen on hiring 46 y/o who Pep dubbed “the best”, he’d be perfect for Everton…

Northern win in the dark and confusion

Northern Districts won an extraordinary and sometimes bizarre match by three Duckworth/Lewis runs at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui, leaving Wellington angry and disappointed at the end

Peter Hoare29-Dec-2000Northern Districts won an extraordinary and sometimes bizarre match by three Duckworth/Lewis runs at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui, leaving Wellington angry and disappointed at the end. With 14 still needed, six overs and two balls to bowl and the last pair at the wicket, the umpires offered Northern the light. Knowing that they were ahead on Duckworth/Lewis calculations, the offer was gleefully accepted. With two spinners bowling (as demanded by umpire Bowden as a condition for play continuing in the gloom) there was no danger to the batsmen. Indeed, it could be argued that they were in less danger than anybody else in the ground.Wellington were obviously disgusted at the decision, with hats being thrown on the ground and the players remaining in the middle for some five minutes, debating the issue with umpires Wright and Bowden before reluctantly accepting their fate. That was not all. Earlier a rain interruption had been extended by an unnecessary 90 minutes because the covers had come apart at the seams, like the two teams at various stages of the day. Without this interruption a full, fifty over match might have been completed. All this overshadowed a magnificent performance from Wellington quickie Andrew Penn. He finished with figures of 8-1-28-7, the second best ever in domestic limited overs cricket (Willie Watson holds the record with 7-23 for Auckland against Otago in 1984/85). Penn now holds the best bowling records for Central Districts and Wellington, both against Northern. He finished with figures of 8-1-28-7, the second best figures ever domestic limited overs cricket (Willie Watson holds the record with 7-23 for Auckland against Otago in 1984/5) Penn now holds the best bowling records for Central Districts and Wellington, both against Northern. It was an outstanding piece of bowling, with movement and extra bounce on a consistent off stump line. It was also one of those days when the edges were found and carried to the fielders, but Penn deserved any good fortune that came his way. With the ODI squad being announced tomorrow, he could not have picked a better day to stake his claim.Wellington began well, having won the toss and chosen to bat. Nevin hit three fours off Tuffey in the sixth over, taking his side to 47-2 when he was out.Thereafter it was a struggle, as Wellington crept to 119-7 from 40 overs when the rain fell and the covers leaked. Bradburn, as usual, was Northern’s best bowler, finishing with 10-1-25-1.The numbers having been crunched, Northern were left with a target of 144 in forty overs. They began appearing to think that it would all be a bit of a breeze, Hamish Marshall and Simon Doull appearing to be aiming to finish it all in less than 20 overs, never mind 40.Then, thanks to Penn, it all turned to dust, with a spectacular collapse reducing the home team to 47-6. Hart and James Marshall worked quietly and carefully to bring Northern back into it (the required rate was always around three an over and was never an issue). The return of Penn disposed of both of them. Tait and Tuffey continued the good work, Tuffey hitting a six over mid-wicket off Jefferson, a sign that the light was not an impenetrable problem for the batsmen. The last few balls were, in some ways, the strangest of the lot. Roger Twose bowled them, his first spell of the season. His first four balls were all wides, with another following later in the over. However, he got the wicket of Tait, caught by a skyer at mid off.It was then that the umpires took the decision to offer the light. Common sense said that the game should be played to a conclusion, but when has that had much to do with events on a cricket field? The win puts Northern equal on points with Otago at the top of the table. Wellington are bottom and need to win against CD on Sunday if they are not to lose touch.

Newcastle transfer update on Murphy

Newcastle United have received a big transfer boost as a journalist has dropped a definitive four-word update on the future of Jacob Murphy.

The Lowdown: Murphy has not signed contract yet

Murphy is still stalling on a new contract at the St. James’ Park faithful, although reports broke out in April that the Tyneside club are planning to hold talks with him, amid interest from Rangers, Southampton and Watford for his signature.

That said, while a new deal has not been signed, other clubs will feel that they can lure him away from the North East in the summer transfer window given that his current deal expires next season.

The Latest: Norwich journalist rules out Murphy move

While Norwich City have not been explicitly linked with a move for their former man recently, their sporting director, Stuart Webber, did say it ‘pains’ him how under-utilised Murphy has been on Tyneside, per Chronicle Live.

Now, Canaries journalist Paddy Davitt, in replying to a fan in a Q&A session with the Eastern Daily Press, seems to have ruled out any potential return to Carrow Road by claiming that ‘that ship has sailed’.

Nonetheless, this will come as a welcome boost to Steve Bruce and the Magpies, considering the plans to talk to Murphy over a new contract.

The Verdict: Newcastle must keep Murphy

The Toon must try and keep hold of Murphy at all costs, even if that means giving him a much bigger wage.

The 26-year-old has played the full 90 minutes in each of the last four games in the Premier League so far in the 2020/21 term, and so is clearly an important part of the team at this minute in time.

His added versatility to be able to play both as a wing-back and a winger is also very handy to have in the squad as it allows Bruce or any other manager on Tyneside to switch between a back three, four and five, and so letting him go would not seem like a wise idea in that regard.

Ex-Man Utd ace weighs in on Pogba deal

Former Manchester United man Keith Gillespie has told Football FanCast that he hopes Paul Pogba remains at the club next season as they look to challenge Manchester City.

The France international was in sublime form against Tottenham Hotspur earlier in April, laying on two superb assists, though only one counted after Edinson Cavani’s first goal was ruled out after Son Heung-Min was adjudged to have been fouled by Scott McTominay.

Pogba also registered an assist in games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley, but there are some concerns over his future, with his contract expiring.

Pogba’s deal ends at the end of next season and that means he could be set to leave for nothing at the end of the 2022/23 season.

He has been linked away, with Italian newspaper TuttoSport, via The Sun, linking him with a potential return to Juventus, the club he joined United from.

Gillespie, though, believes that Pogba needs to stay if United are to have any chance of challenging City for the Premier League title next season.

He hopes that the 28-year-old can remain fit for the duration of the season, having missed six matches with a hamstring injury prior to the clash with Brighton.

Gillespie told FFC: “I’d like to see him stay at Man United. You think about a fully fit Paul Pogba.

“You know, he’s had his injury problems that season, but if Paul Pogba was fully fit for a season and was playing at the top of this game, gosh, that’s going to really help any club.”

Gillespie also thinks that United need a striker if they are to complete their squad, with United currently 10 points behind Pep Guardiola’s side with five games of the campaign remaining.

He added: “You add in them maybe signing that striker that they do need, then they look a really, really good side, with a few tweaks here and there, defensively, and then you think, well, now’s the time maybe they may be able to come up against Man City, who for me are still way out in front of anybody else at the minute.”

Pundit discusses Leeds’ move for Tagliafico

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish believes that Nicolas Tagliafico is a player who could help take Leeds United up another level.

Marcelo Bielsa may be looking for reinforcements all over the pitch this summer, but left-back would appear to be a priority position. With Ezgjan Alioski expected to move on to pastures new, an experienced campaigner to replace him is of the utmost importance for Leeds.

Tagliafico has emerged as a prime candidate to move to Elland Road, having enjoyed a successful spell at Ajax which has brought with it two Eredivisie titles.

McLeish talks up Leeds’ move for Tagliafico

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish explained why he thinks the 28-year-old would be a shrewd addition if Leeds bring him to Elland Road, saying:

“Alioski has not really done anything wrong. He’s been shifted into left back, he’s usually a forward player and did well in those areas when coming from midfield.

“You have to give him credit but for any team to look at going forward they need to look at which positions they can improve.

“With Alioski not being a natural left back, you think Leeds would be looking at somebody like Tagliafico.

“It makes sense, Leeds want to get to the next level and to do that they need to get more quality in.”

Transfer Tavern take

In truth, it is hard to find too many negatives with regards to Leeds signing Tagliafico, with the left-back possessing a perfect mix of experience and quality. He knows how to win trophies and is an established Champions League competitor, while 27 caps for Argentina also speaks volumes about his pedigree, with four of those coming at the 2018 World Cup.

At 28, he isn’t a player who would be arriving in the twilight of his career either, with several more years at the top to be expected. Plus, his defensive numbers this season are strong, averaging 2.1 successful aerial duels, two successful tackles and 1.9 interceptions per league game – each of those compares quite favourably with the figures posted by Leeds’ current squad.

Therefore, McLeish is right to talk up the Whites’ transfer links with Tagliafico.

In other news, a pundit has made a big claim about one Leeds player’s future. Find out who it is here.

Spurs legend sends warning to Mason

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts has warned Ryan Mason and Chris Powell that they “can’t have mates” in the Spurs squad, and has told Football FanCast that he hopes the club return to their ethos of attacking football.

Mason has been placed in charge of the first-team on an interim basis and is being assisted by Powell.

That decision came on the heels of Jose Mourinho being sacked last Monday.

Roberts is hopeful that the two can help return Spurs to their attacking roots, especially given that he believes that in recent weeks, the side have been appalling.

Indeed, Spurs have won just two of their last eight games, which includes the 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb and a 1-0 Carabao Cup Final defeat to Manchester City, where they didn’t show too much attacking intent.

Roberts believes Mason and Powell will reassess the squad and pick those who deserve to play, while also hoping that the tactics change.

Speaking to FFC, he said: “I think Mason and Powell will have a massive, massive job on their hands now. You can’t have mates, you’ve got to pick the right players. I think every player now should be looked at differently.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the team, to be honest the team has played absolute garbage, we haven’t played well for a long, long time, and I’m just hoping that he takes the shackles off of them.”
