Kenya offer to tour Pakistan

Cricket Kenya has approached the Pakistan Cricket Board whether they would be willing to host a short one-day series next February ahead of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers

Cricinfo staff29-Sep-2008Cricket Kenya has approached the Pakistan Cricket Board whether they would be willing to host a short one-day series next February ahead of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers.Tom Tikolo, CK’s chief executive, told The News that he had raised the idea during the Pakistan Academy tour of Kenya which concluded at the weekend. “We are desperate to play against some strong teams and believe that playing a series of one-dayers in Pakistan can really help our players get ready for the World Cup qualifiers,” Tikolo said.”Playing around six games in Pakistan will help us to find our rhythm. The World Cup qualifiers are our most important assignment and we will take all possible steps to ensure that our team competes in the event well-prepared.”The proposal might appeal to the PCB who are keen to attract tours by any overseas teams in the wake of recent cancellations following continuing violence inside the country. However, Kenya are something of a shambles at the moment, and were well beaten by the Academy side in all five matches. What is more, Kenya are hardly likely to prove appealing to broadcasters. For their part, Kenya are desperate to link up with any Full Member willing to play them. They have ODIs arranged with Zimbabwe and South Africa in the next five weeks, but they represent the first major games in almost a year.

Rangers: Hagi out of Dundee Utd clash

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed a body blow to his squad for this afternoon’s clash against Dundee United, with Ianis Hagi ruled out of the trip.

The Gers are set to travel to Tannadice in the early kickoff, with the reigning champions hoping to build on their impressive opening-day 3-0 victory.

However, following that convincing win over Livingston, Gerrard’s charges came back down to earth with a bang in midweek. A disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Swedish outfit Malmo in the first leg of their Champions League third-round qualifier has left Rangers with work to do in the reverse fixture.

The Liverpool legend was dealt a further setback as he confirmed that the Romanian playmaker won’t be available to face the Tangerines.

Steven Gerrard will be sickened

Hagi remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes against Malmo after pulling up in the warm-up, and the exciting Romanian forward is set to be sidelined once again this afternoon.

Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara are set to return to the starting XI after missing the Malmo tie through injury, but the same can’t be said for Alfredo Morelos. The 25-year-old is set to return to training but is short of match sharpness, although he could be back in action for their crucial second leg tie in the Champions League qualifiers in midweek.

Gerrard addressed his side’s injury issues in yesterday’s press conference, saying: “We will be without Ianis Hagi. Roofe is available to return to the group. Kamara will return to the squad.

“Morelos is available but he will need a couple of sessions on his return. Ryan Jack will be another couple of weeks all being well.”

Hagi – hailed in the past by Gerrard as a “top talent” – needed just eight minutes to find the net against Livingston last week before being forced off, while his figures from last season showed how valuable a contribution he makes to the side. Only four Gers players scored more than his seven Premiership goals, while nobody could top his tally of 11 top-flight assists (WhoScored).

While Dundee United should be beatable considering that they began their campaign with a loss, Gerrard is no doubt a firm admirer of the 22-year-old judging by his comments above, and he will surely be sickened not to have the £21k-p/w Romanian to call upon this afternoon.

Derby County set sights on Kamil Grosicki

Derby County are interested in a deal to bring Kamil Grosicki to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that the Rams are keeping a very close eye on the situation of the former West Bromwich Albion winger, whose contract expired at The Hawthorns at the end of last season.

The report goes on to mention the fact that Derby have so far struggled to get much business done in the summer transfer window, largely down to the fact the club are operating under an EFL imposed transfer embargo, although Wayne Rooney is able to sign free agents on year-long deals and bring in loan signings on six-month contracts – albeit with a capped salary.

However, it is then claimed that the 35-year-old hopes to make Grosicki his fifth summer signing, following the arrivals of Richard Stearman, Ryan Allsop, Ravel Morrison and Curtis Davies last week.

Rooney would love him

With Rooney having recently missed out on the signing of Sone Aluko – who joined Ipswich Town on Friday, despite having been in training with Derby for the majority of the summer – and with the Rams squad currently being extremely short in the wide attacking positions, it is clear that Grosicki is a player the 35-year-old would love to have.

While the Poland international struggled for game time at West Brom last term, the 33-year-old proved he is an extremely capable player in the second division of English football during the Baggies’ promotion-winning campaign in the season prior, as well as in the first half of the season for Hull City.

Indeed, over his 42 Championship appearances for both sides in 2019/20, the £900k-rated man scored seven goals, provided eight assists and created 10 big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 2.2 shots and making 1.6 key passes per game.

These returns saw the man Grant McCann dubbed an “outstanding” player earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as Albion’s joint seventh-best performer in the league.

As such, if the £25k-per-week winger does indeed go on to sign for Derby this summer, and subsequently manages to refind his form from 2019/20 for Rooney’s side, he could well provide a huge boost to the Rams’ survival hopes this season – something that would delight both the Derby County manager and fans alike.

Celtic: Hoops interested in M’Baye Niang

Celtic are interested in signing Rennes striker M’Baye Niang, according to Foot Mercato reporter Sebastien Denis.

The Lowdown: Niang profiled

Niang has been with Rennes since 2019 and is under contract until 2023. He’s primarily a centre-forward but can also play out wide on either side.

The 26-year-old has scored 67 goals during his career for club and country and is currently valued at £4.05m by Transfermarkt after his market valuation plummeted from £13.5m in August 2020.

Niang, who is on £62,000-a-week with the Ligue 1 side, is attracting interest from clubs in four different countries.

The Latest: Denis’ tweet

Denis posted on Twitter on Thursday evening on Niang. He claimed that Serie A side Venezia are ‘very hot’ on Niang, with Celtic, Fenerbahce and Shanghai Shenhua all ‘interested’, but to a lesser degree.

“As reported in Italy, the Italian team from Venezia is very very hot on M’baye Niang for a dry transfer. Fenerbahce, Celtic Glasgow and Shanghai are interested in the Rennes striker but to a lesser degree.”

The Verdict: A gamble

Celtic’s reported interest in Niang could be due to Odsonne Edouard’s stance on his Parkhead future.

The French forward still wants to leave Celtic Park after his move to Leicester City fell through, but bringing in Niang could be a gamble.

His wage in France is over three times the amount of Celtic’s highest earner, Callum McGregor, and his form last season didn’t represent that of a player on £62,000-a-week.

Niang scored just once in 17 appearances in all competitions, so perhaps Celtic would be better off looking elsewhere for attacking reinforcements.

Exclusive: Roberts backs young Spurs stars to thrive in ECL

Graham Roberts believes that a clutch of young Tottenham Hotspur players could be given a major opportunity to impress in the Europa Conference League this season.

Spurs qualified for the competition after finishing seventh in the Premier League last season.

It certainly wasn’t their main objective, with the Conference League the third-tier European competition, behind the Champions League and the Europa League.

New Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo has involved a number of youngsters in pre-season, including Alfie Devine and Dane Scarlett.

Devine is just 16, while Scarlett is 17, and they have each made their first-team debuts for the club.

The former played in the FA Cup clash with non-league Marine last season, scoring in the 5-0 win, while Scarlett has made three appearances, a one-minute cameo against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League and also against both Ludogorets and Wolfsberger in the Europa League, providing an assist in the latter.

And Roberts believes that players of their kind will have a major opportunity in the Conference League this term.

He exclusively told The Transfer Tavern: “It’s brilliant to play in that Europa Conference, I think a lot of youngsters will be given chances in that. What you’ve got to be careful of is that you don’t play too many and you get knocked out, and everyone’s having a go at you because it’s the Conference.

“So they’ve either got to take it 80 or 90 per cent serious or they just say ‘it’s just for the youngsters and we’re not bothered about it’.

“So it’s down to what the manager and what the club want to do with it. But those two could learn a lot in that competition this year, very, very much so.”

Tony Gallacher set for Sunderland switch

Sunderland Atheltic are set to confirm the arrival of Tony Gallacher in the coming days.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that the Black Cats have all but secured a season-long loan deal for the Liverpool left-back, with an announcement expected in the very near future.

The journalist went on to state that the capture of the 22-year-old has now resolved Lee Johnson’s issues at left-back, however, with Denver Hume still yet to put pen to paper on a new deal at the Stadium of Light, the out of contract defender could still yet move onto pastures new this summer.

In his tweet, Nixon said: “Sunderland. Tony Gallacher deal should happen tomorrow. Loan from Liverpool. Left-back position sorted.”

Louis-Dreyfus could solve Sunderland issue

As Nixon hinted at, the left-hand side of Johnson’s backline was very much beginning to look like something of a problem area for the 40-year-old manager, who, with a little over a week remaining before the Black Cats kick off their League One campaign, had no contracted players in the position.

However, with Gallacher’s arrival at the club now looking to be a near-certainty, the Mackems boss will be breathing a huge sigh of relief.

And, considering just how much potential the 22-year-old appears to possess, Kyril Louis-Dreyfus could well have solved Sunderland’s left-back problem not just for next season, but for many more in the future.

Indeed, having so far failed to break into the Liverpool first-team – something that, with the greatest of respect to Gallacher, appears unlikely considering his age and Andy Robertson’s nailing down starting spot – the former Scotland U19 international nevertheless demonstrated his ability while on loan at FC Toronto last year.

Over his 10 MLS appearances for the club, the £360k-rated man registered one assist, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 1.3 clearances and won 2.7 duels per game.

These returns saw the man Ali Curtis dubbed a “promising” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.87, ranking him as the club’s 12th-best performer in the league.

As such, should Gallacher impress for Sunderland next season, considering the fact it seems as if the 22-year-old has not quite made the grade for a Premier League-challenging side, it would not be surprising if the Reds were happy to move the defender on permanently, something that could well tempt Louis-Dreyfus.

Pundit insists Calvert-Lewin would jump at Real Madrid switch

Dean Windass believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin would jump at the chance to join Real Madrid if the Spanish giants submit an official bid.

It has been a summer of change for Everton, with Carlo Ancelotti departing in favour of a return to the Bernabeu and former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez moving into the hotseat.

While Ancelotti has left Merseyside, the Italian has been keeping a close eye on proceedings at Goodison Park and is reportedly mulling over a £50million move for Calvert-Lewin.

The frontman, who reportedly earns £75,000-a-week, enjoyed the best spell of his career under the guidance of Ancelotti and scored 21 goals in 39 appearances last season.

Calvert-Lewin is yet to return for pre-season training after being a member of the England squad which reached the Euro 2020 final before a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out defeat to Italy earlier this month.

Although Calvert-Lewin came through the Everton ranks and has made 173 appearances for the Toffees, Windass feels the frontman would be happy to swap Goodison Park for Real Madrid.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, Windass said: “What a great move it would be for the kid.

“He’s proven now. At the end of the day, if Real Madrid come knocking and he’s had that affinity with the manager before, I think he’d jump at the chance.”

Should Celtic sign Finn Ole Becker?

This summer is one of the biggest in recent history for Celtic as new manager Ange Postecoglou desperately tries to repair the rubble from a disappointing campaign.

The Hoops have already welcomed Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide to the club but they need to press on and welcome more new faces to Parkhead.

On the chalkboard

One of the biggest areas of concern this summer is in the middle of the park. Scott Brown has departed Celtic after exiting for a player-coach role with Aberdeen and that has left a significant void not just in terms of his technical and physical ability, but also in terms of his leadership skills.

Shaw could fill in for Brown in the middle, while Ismaila Soro is a name who should now earn more minutes, but both players are still particularly raw.

The Ivorian caught the eye on a number of occasions last season, prevailing in 2.2 tackles per game and winning as many as ten successful challenges against Lille in the Europa League. However, like Brown in his formative days, he still lacks tactical discipline.

The Bhoys have been linked with a move for somebody who Postecoglou knows well in Aaron Mooy, but their perfect Brown replacement lies elsewhere.

The solution

Speaking on the Cynic podcast about midfielders Celtic should have on their shortlist, they suggested St Pauli youngster Finn Ole Becker as a potential acquisition.

The midfield general is just 21 years of age but has all of the qualities which would enable him to thrive in Glasgow.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-news-doig-nketiah-mccann” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

Described as “very exciting” on the podcast, the German started 27 times last term in Bundesliga 2, combining progressive ball carrying with eye-catching defensive work.

The Cynic lists one of Becker’s strengths as defensive positioning, something which can be seen in his 1.3 tackles per game last season.

Although he lacks a huge physical presence, his slight and agile frame allows him to move about the pitch in a swifter way compared to Brown in his final few campaigns at Celtic.

Pivotally, he also possesses the ability to progress the play. Becker ranks in the 78th percentile across similar leagues for dribbles per 100 passes (7.7) and is in the 84th percentile for key passes per 90 minutes.

The German’s decision making is intelligent, something which sets him apart from Soro, who has a tendency to be erratic with his choices.

Becker wouldn’t be a like-minded Brown replacement but he’d still be able to provide a similar screening in front of the back four. His ability to roam forward could also be important when transitioning between defence and attack.

Valued at £2.5m to £4m, he’d be a bargain for Postecoglou to snap up in the coming weeks.

Derby dealt Edmundson blow

Derby County have been dealt a huge blow in their bid to bring George Edmundson to Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Daily Record, who claim that Rangers are not prepared to sell the centre-back in the summer transfer window, with Steven Gerrard set to give the 23-year-old another chance in the Gers first team next season.

It is then reported that both Derby and Peterborough United were interested in a deal for the defender, with Posh thought to be prepared to make a six-figure offer for Edmundson, while the Record claim that Wayne Rooney’s side do not currently have the financial capacity to make an enticing bid for the £450k-rated man.

Fans will be gutted

Having impressed during a loan spell at Pride Park last season, the news that Rangers do not appear likely to allow Edmundson to leave the club this summer, as well as the fact that the Rams do not seem to have enough funds to even make an offer for the centre-back, is sure to leave fans of the club gutted.

Indeed, over his 10 Championship appearances for Derby last term, the £4k-per-week defender helped his side keep one clean sheet, as well as making an average of 0.5 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, 3.5 clearances and winning 6.1 duels per game.

These returns saw the 23-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.78, ranking him as Rooney’s 12th-best performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, with the 35-year-old undoubtedly hoping to put together a side in the summer transfer window that is capable of much more than just scraping survival next season, the signing of a player whom Gerrard once dubbed “faultless” would certainly appear to have increased the Rams’ chances of going on to achieve this feat.

However, with Rangers appearing unwilling to sell, as well as Peterborough seeming to have the upper hand should the defender become available, it does not look likely that Edmundson will be returning to Pride Park anytime soon.
