300 ejections but crowd praised

MELBOURNE, Dec 15 AAP – Police ejected 300 fans from today’s day-night tri-series cricket match between Australia and England at the MCG.

Adam Cooper15-Dec-2002MELBOURNE, Dec 15 AAP – Police ejected 300 fans from today’s day-night tri-series cricket match between Australia and England at the MCG.But despite that officials and police were happy with the crowd’s behaviour.Police ejected 300 fans and arrested eight – two of them streakers – as Australia beat England by 89 runs.Police and organisers said the match was largely trouble-free.But in a disappointing return for organisers, only 34,887 fans attended the game despite perfect conditions.Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) general manager Stephen Gough said the high number of ejections was due to a tougher crackdown on offensive behaviour.”Overall, we were quite happy with the behaviour of the crowd,” he said. But Gough said the MCC was disappointed with the crowd size and said a Sunday fixture just before Christmas could have contributed to the low turn-out.”I would have thought about 50,000 would have been a good figure, we were rather disappointed,” he said. The MCC and Australian Cricket Board (ACB) last week warned Melbourne’s future as a one-day cricket venue was at risk because of continued crowd trouble in recent years.ACB spokesman Peter Young said fans had taken notice of the warning and responded in turn.”There’s certainly a very, very broad community awareness on what the expectations and requirements were and tonight we’ve seen a very well-behaved and good-humoured crowd,” he said.A greater police presence was noticeable at the match, with the MCC also making use of additional security and extra security camera vision.Fans experienced longer delays entering the ground as security staff conducted thorough bag searches.Melbourne’s opening weekend in last summer’s tri-series saw more than 30 fans arrested and 400 ejected over the two matches, mainly for drunkenness. Two streakers ran across the field in the first half of the England innings and were quickly beset upon by police. The duo face fines of up to $5,000.

Tudor to miss first Test against India

Alex Tudor has been ruled out of next week’s first Test between England and India at Lord’s

Stephen Lamb19-Jul-2002Alex Tudor has been ruled out of next week’s first Test between England and India at Lord’s. Tudor, who was Man of the Match in the last Test against SriLanka a month ago, was reassessed today and it was revealed that he will be out for at least two more weeks with tendonitis. The squad for Lord’s will be announced tomorrow morning, after postponement from yesterday because of numerous injury concerns. Marcus Trescothick (fractured thumb) and Andrew Caddick (side strain) have already been ruled out.Doubts remain as to whether Darren Gough can stand up to the rigours of a five-day Test, given that he has yet to play anything more than one-day cricket this summer. He is in the Yorkshire side for the Roses match which started at Headingley this morning, his first Championship appearance for Yorkshire this season.Surrey’s Mark Butcher is also involved in Championship action, for the first time since he underwent surgery on his knee a month ago.

LFC fans unhappy at Conor Bradley claim

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after a report claimed that youngster Conor Bradley could be considered a right-back option next season.

The Reds ended up salvaging their 2020/21 season by finishing third but it was a hugely taxing campaign which threatened to be a disaster at one point. One player who struggled to consistently find his best level was Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the 22-year-old arguably overplayed at right-back.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359326”]

A lack of a top-quality replacement was arguably a key reason for this, with Neco Williams still an inexperienced player learning his trade. The Welshman could even leave Liverpool this summer, and while that would further highlight the need to sign a new right-back, a fresh update may suggest otherwise.

According to The Athletic [via Watch LFC on Twitter], 17-year-old Bradley could be viewed as a squad option next season, instead of a new signing coming in. The teenager is a regular presence in the Reds’ underage sides but has never so much as been included in a first team matchday squad (Transfermarkt).

Everton interested in Patrik Schick

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been linked with the Goodison Park exit door in the last few weeks and as a result, Everton have been touted with moves for a number of Europe’s top strikers.

Swiss forward Haris Seferovic could join Rafa Benitez at the Toffees but they’re now in the hunt for a more electrifying forward at Euro 2020.

What’s the word?

According to reports in Italy (via TEAMtalk), Everton are interested in signing Patrik Schick from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

The Czech Republic striker enjoyed a fabulous European Championships and has also attracted the interest of Tottenham.

However, for any deal to be concluded, Benitez and Marcel Brands will have to part ways with a hefty sum of money.

Schick only just signed for Leverkusen a year ago and as a result, there is no pressure to sell.

That said, if they receive an offer of €40m (£34m) they might be willing to offload.

DCL running scared

If Everton bring Schick to Merseyside this summer then it could well send Calvert-Lewin running for the hills.

The England international found the net on 21 occasions last term and was provided with no competition for a central striking berth.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-everton-news-benitez-kamara-romero-dumfries” title= “Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

However, the arrival of a new forward with similar qualities might have him sweating over his place in the team.

Of course, it would be foolish to dismiss Calvert-Lewin but his minutes could be reduced a little next season and most importantly, he might not have as many goal-scoring opportunities.

That’s because Schick is one of the most in-form strikers on the planet, enjoying a wonderful summer with Czech Republic.

His country reached the quarter-finals of the Euros before they were knocked out by Denmark.

Schick scored in that game which took his tally in the tournament to five which means he’s currently the joint top scorer in the competition alongside a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Therefore, it’s hardly a surprise that new Leverkusen boss Gerardo Seoane described the 25-year-old as a player with “incredible finishing qualities” just a matter of days ago.

He only found the net 13 times last term but as he approaches his prime years, Schick looks like a force to be reckoned with.

The forward scored a mind-boggling goal from the halfway line against Scotland during matchday one of the European Championships and at 6 foot 2, is a brutal presence for any defender.

Like Calvert-Lewin, he is capable of reigning supreme in the air. Last term, he won 2.3 aerial battles per game in the Bundesliga and then a whopping 3.8 duels per match in the Europa League.

Capable of brutally dominating a backline, he’d be an exceptional signing, one that could finally give Everton’s current star striker some competition for his shirt.

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react as Liam Shaw update emerges

Sheffield Wednesday have agreed to let Liam Shaw cut his Sheffield Wednesday deal short by two weeks in order to join Celtic [Sheffield Star].

Of course, Shaw signed a pre-contract with the Glasgow giants back in February [The Scottish Sun].

Seeing out the 2020/21 campaign at the Owls, the midfielder was originally scheduled to head north of the border upon the expiration of his contract on July 1st [Sheffield Star].

However, reports have now emanated that indicate the Sky Bet League one side chose to terminate his deal imminently, in return for a swift compensation fee said to be around the £300,000 mark [Sheffield Star].

The boyhood Wednesday fan was officially unveiled at as a Celtic player yesterday [CeltsAreHere]. Nevertheless, receiving an instantaneous financial bonus will provide a positive boost for the Hillsborough faithful.

No wonder many Sheffield Wednesday diehards took to Twitter to voice their opinion on recent events.

Sheffield Wednesday fans react:

Here is how some of the Sheffield Wednesday faithful summarized their feelings upon hearing the news:

“So we get paid, and don’t pay a player during the period he’s not playing…dare I say it, but was that sensible business from Wednesday?”

Forest receive boost in Dane Murphy pursuit

Nottingham Forest have been handed a boost in their bid to bring Dane Murphy to the City Ground this summer.

What’s been said?

That’s according to The Athletic journalist Daniel Taylor, who revealed in a post on Twitter that, contrary to reports, the Barnsley CEO has not resigned from his current role, as his contract with the Tykes is set to expire at the end of June.

Taylor added that the 35-year-old could take over at Nottingham Forest in the very near future, as well as confirming that the Reds would not have to pay any compensation for the chief executive as a result of his contractual situation.

Hughton will be buzzing

With Forest’s transfer strategy in recent years having been rather erratic – with the Reds bringing in a total of 17 players last season, a number of whom have now been told that they are free to find a new club this summer – it would certainly appear as if they are in need of a more measured approach in the transfer market, something which Murphy’s appointment should bring.

After taking over at Barnsley, the 35-year-old immediately made widespread changes at Oakwell, including the appointment of Valerien Ismael as their new manager and taking a data-driven approach to recruitment, with the CEO’s actions appearing to have a hugely positive impact on the club.

Indeed, in the time since Murphy has been at Barnsley, the Tykes have gone from fighting for survival in the Championship to beaten play-off semi-finalists in the space of just 10 months.

With Forest having endured something of a season to forget last time out, finishing in a lowly 17th place in the second tier, Hughton will no doubt be hoping to build a team in the summer transfer window which is capable of much more than mid-table obscurity next term, something with which Murphy could very much help.

With the news that the American looks set to take over at Forest in the coming weeks, Hughton must be buzzing that his plan for the Reds could finally be about to take shape.

A plan well-executed

I had expected Harbhajan Singh to be moreeffective on the final day and even run through the West Indiesbatting line-up

Erapalli Prasanna24-Apr-2002A chapter has been extracted from the history of 1971 and rewritten. An inspired Indian team has finally proved to the worldthat they have it in them to win Test matches abroad. The Queen’sPark Oval at Port of Spain will always have a special place inIndian cricket history, more so now since, with this memorableTest win, India have three victories at this picturesque venue.

I had expected Harbhajan Singh to be more effective on the final day and even run through the West Indiesbatting line-up. It was a disappointing show by the young offspinner, and, in the final analysis, it was the fast bowlers whowon the Test for India.

I am forced to conclude that Carl Hooper’s decision to bowl firstwent a long way towards deciding the final outcome. Ideally, onewould want to bowl the opposition out for a score around 200 runsif the most is to be made of such a decision. Hooper simply doesnot have the kind of fast bowlers who can rip through a battingline-up. The fact that India was allowed to score 339 in thefirst innings really exposed the limitations of the Windiesbowling department.Even though the West Indian bowlers had some success in removingthe Indian opening batsmen on the first morning, Rahul Dravidcame to the rescue and played yet another important knock. I wasvery impressed by the way in which Dravid handled the thirdorfourth-string West Indies attack. Even on a wicket that promisedlife and bounce, Dravid played some exquisite cover drives andthe flick through mid-wicket with élan.A shaky start from Sachin Tendulkar is a very unusual sight, butthe master batsman came into his own after he got the measure ofthe track and the insipid attack. One must pay glowing tribute tothe Mumbai maestro for his sheer appetite for runs and the mannerin which he scores them. Tendulkar was the mainstay of India’sfirst innings, and his 29th Test hundred, which equalled SirDonald Bradman’s record of Test centuries, helped India put up adecent first-innings total. It is also very heartening to see VVS Laxman play with so muchresponsibility. The stylish batsman applied himself very well, and the determination to excel was there for all to see. Thereshould be no doubts regarding talent, which he has in abundance.I believe that Laxman has finally sorted out his flings withcomplacency to adopt a more professional approach. He is a classplayer, and he proved that with a fifty in each innings at Portof Spain; he really deserved the Man of the Match award. The Indian pacers Javagal Srinath, Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khanbowled well, proving that they have it in them to win Tests forIndia away from home. I must particularly commend Srinath for hislion-hearted effort in this match. I was also impressed by ZaheerKhan’s bowling; the delivery he produced to get rid of Brian Larain the first innings was a beauty. It is a rare sight these daysin Test cricket to see a bowler willing to attack to take awicket. It was Nehra who turned things around in the second innings, picking up the valuable wickets of Lara and Hooper. The youngsterhas a lot of talent, and it augurs well for Indian cricket that agenuine group of fast bowlers are coming to the fore.Appropriately enough, the West Indies is the ideal place for sucha pace attack to blossom. There was not much to cheer about in the West Indian battingdepartment. The batsmen did not apply themselves enough toconvert starts into big scores; such efforts may have changed thefinal result of this Test match. Looking at their bowling, twobowlers caught my eye – Adam Sanford and Marlon Black. Sanfordhas it in him to be a class act if he can concentrate on line andlength; if he can add some discipline to the whippy action, hecan surprise a few leading batsmen. Black is one bowler who lookslike never giving up, and it is a quality that will help him inthe long run.I had expected Harbhajan Singh to be more effective on the finalday and even run through the West Indies batting line-up. It wasa disappointing show by the young off-spinner, and, in the finalanalysis, it was the fast bowlers who won the Test for India. Intalking about the game, though, it must be said that the numberof umpiring mistakes in the match baffled me, and I hope theInternational Cricket Council (ICC) will ensure that such blatantmistakes are not repeated at the highest level of the game. Finally, I must congratulate Sourav Ganguly for this memorableTest win. There was an extra edge to his captaincy in this match, and Port of Spain witnessed some inspiring work in the field fromthe Indian skipper; the field placements, especially, weresuperb. A lot of thinking went into formulating the strategy forthis Test. Ganguly ensured that the plan was well-executed, andthis memorable Test win should hold Indian cricket in good steadin future endeavours.

West Ham want Gerard Moreno

According to Calciomercato, West Ham are interested in signing Gerard Moreno from Villarreal this summer.

The Lowdown: West Ham need a striker

The Hammers have enjoyed a fantastic campaign, finishing sixth in the Premier League table to earn a place in the Europa League next term.

However, if they want to compete on several fronts, they will need to bring in another centre-forward – David Moyes currently has only Michail Antonio at his disposal in that position.

The Latest: Hammers eye Moreno

It is now being reported that West Ham want Moreno, who recently won the Europa League with his current club.

Along with the Irons, Newcastle and Roma are said to be in pursuit of the 29-year-old.

The Verdict: Top signing

This past season was the best of Moreno’s career. He managed 30 goals in 46 matches in all competitions, while he also provided 11 assists (Transfermarkt). His performances have seen him called up to Spain’s squad for the European Championships, where he will be hoping to add to his five goals in 10 caps.

Compared to Karim Benzema in the past (laligalowdown.com), he is already 29 and is therefore not the youngest option. However, he is a player who clearly knows where the back of the net is, as illustrated by his figures during 2020/21. If West Ham could convince him to move to the London Stadium, he could be an inspired signing.

In other news, many West Ham fans were unhappy over this man’s snub.

West Ham fans flock to official club post on Soucek

Flocking to an official club post, many West Ham United fans have been left ecstatic by news regarding midfielder and favourite Tomas Soucek.

Soucek, becoming a mainstay under manager David Moyes in his first full season for the Irons, signing from Slavia Prague in the summer of 2020, has certainly done enough to impress critics.

As per WhoScored, the 26-year-old played every minute of West Ham’s remarkable Premier League campaign and helped to guide them to a surprising sixth-placed finish – meaning qualification for the Europa League group stage.

He also won more aerial duels on average (6.2) than any Hammers man domestically, with news now emerging that he has been rewarded for these efforts.

Liverpool fans want Elliott to stay put

A number of Liverpool fans have been calling for Harvey Elliott to stay put at Anfield this summer, rather than going out on loan again.

The Reds could have a busy transfer window in the summer, with incomings and outgoings both expected after what has been a tumultuous season.

Jurgen Klopp will be keen to bolster his squad, but equally, there are fringe players who could generate some much-needed transfer funds, such as Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

Someone who could potentially become a first-team regular is Elliott, with the 18-year-old coming off the back of an excellent season on loan at Blackburn Rovers.

The forward scored seven goals and registered 11 assists in the Championship in 2020/21, catching the eye with his vision, quick feet and end product.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the Reds are still yet to decide what to do with Elliott and Sepp van den Berg this summer, as Klopp weighs up his options.

There is an increasing feeling that the teenager could be a handy player to have around, however, given his recent performances.
