Favourites Australia eye elusive crown

Australia enter the World T20 as favourites due to a balanced squad characterized by a strong depth in batting

The list of trophies won by Australia over the years is long and impressive, but there is one conspicuous absence. For all their success in World Cups, Champions Trophy tournaments and Test cricket, the World T20 has eluded them. Of course the history of the event is short, stretching back only as far as 2007, but the lack of a title in any of the four editions so far staged bothers the Australians. They enter the 2014 tournament with their best chance yet and, according to most reputable betting companies, as the favourites. It is a favouritism based in part on their recent form against England and South Africa but as much on their batting strength as anything. David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Brad Hodge, George Bailey, Cameron White, Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell – that’s some pretty impressive depth. The absence of Mitchell Johnson due to injury will hurt them, although Mitchell Starc has developed into one of the finest fast bowlers in T20 cricket, and James Faulkner offers an important all-round option. In the early days of the World T20, Australia’s selectors did not grant the format due respect and assumed the one-day team would do the job. Over time, and with a new selection panel in place, the Australians have realised that to win this event they will need proven T20 performers, regardless of age.Initially T20 seemed a young man’s game; now it is recognised that older types in the twilight of their careers may just have the experience and wiles required. Hence the presence of 43-year-old Brad Hogg, 39-year-old Hodge and 36-year-old Haddin in this squad.”We’ve got the most balanced side that I’ve ever been involved with and a balanced squad,” said Watson, who is the only Australian to have been part of the squads for all five World T20s, including this one. “I think the versatility of this squad (is) more than any squad that I’ve played Twenty20 cricket for Australia. Certainly in all conditions against any opposition we can match up really well, I think it gives us more of a chance to be able win it.”Key playerWith Warner and Watson to occupy two of Australia’s top three batting spots, you would think the other man in that trio might fly under the radar. Except that Aaron Finch enters the tournament as the newly-crowned No.1-ranked T20 international batsman in the world. Last year, Finch smashed the record for the highest score in a T20 international when he plundered 156 against England in Southampton and his clean striking and ability to consistently clear the fence makes him as exciting a player as there is in this Australian squad.Surprise package The catalogue of T20 teams Brad Hodge has played for is almost as long and impressive as Australia’s trophy list. Surely nobody can be shocked by the presence of Twenty20 cricket’s all-time leading run scorer at this tournament? Well, yes, the inclusion of Hodge was a surprise to many people, not least Hodge himself.Often overlooked by the national selectors during his heyday, Hodge had long since written off his international career when he was recalled in January at 39. But his T20 experience, including in Bangladesh with the Barisal Burners, encouraged the selectors to take a punt. His Man-of-the-Match effort in the second T20 in South Africa this month suggested it might have been a good call.Weakness The Australians like the ball coming on to the bat and in the group stage they will face three teams strong on spin options – Pakistan, West Indies and India. There is also the question of whether their own slow bowling will be good enough. Hogg has experience but with the raw legspinner James Muirhead and the part-timer Glenn Maxwell as his main support in spinning conditions, they do look a little thin in that department.World T20 history They might not have won the trophy yet but in three of the four World T20s so far, Australia have made it to at least the semi-final stage. England beat them in the decider in 2010 and last time they were bundled out by eventual champions West Indies in a semi-final. Their low point was the 2009 tournament, when they failed to make it past the group stage.Recent form Australia are five from five this year after beating England 3-0 and South Africa 2-0. There could hardly be a better time to hit their peak. But it was only this summer that things started turning around for Bailey’s men – from the end of the previous World T20 until the games against England, their record was LLLWLL.

'Attacking seamers was our only chance' – Faulkner

‘We targeted the pacers’ – Faulkner

India’s death-bowling problems are well documented, and Australia’s batsmen seemed to know all about them, timing their late assault in Mohali to perfection to complete an improbable chase. James Faulkner, India’s wrecker-in-chief on the night, said after the game he knew better than to go after offspinner R Ashwin, while Adam Voges, Australia’s top scorer, said Faulkner had specifically looked to get after Ishant Sharma in an over that changed the game.”I didn’t feel I could get Ashwin over to the long boundary, with his carom balls. So I thought if I could just get seven or eight off him and target the other end … that was our only chance of winning, to take 20 runs each from the medium pacers,” Faulkner said after his team chased down 304, needing 44 off the final three overs. Ashwin had bowled the 47th over and the pair of Voges and Faulkner took eight off it, with just one boundary. The next over, Ishant was thrown the ball and, according to Voges, Faulkner said: “This is it, I am going after this.”And go he did, slamming four sixes, a four and running a two to take 30 off Ishant and bring the equation down to a very manageable 14 off 12. Ashwin bowled the following over too, and again Faulkner and Voges sensibly knocked him around for five, before easing to victory off seamer Vinay Kumar. While Faulkner’s innings was “extraordinary”, as his captain George Bailey termed it, Ishant did provide him with the opportunities to hit out. The pace bowler pitched short repeatedly, bowled length and delivered only one full ball, and even that delivery allowed Faulkner the room to have a swing.Asked if the Indian seamers crumbled under pressure, Faulkner said, “There is always pressure to bowl at that stage, I know that as I have done that a few times for Australia. It’s just a matter of if you can execute [your skills] or not. There are going to be days when you would look silly out there, and that has happened to me a lot of times. But there are other time when you might bowl a really good over and win it for the team.”Faulkner’s late assault turned the game completely after 91 were required off the last nine overs when he arrived at the crease. He reached his half-century off 24 deliveries while Voges held the other end together with a solid 76.”It was a very good innings from Vogsy,” Faukner said. “It’s clear that you struggle early in the innings, but to battle the way through like he did and help me out when I was struggling initially, I think he batted exceptionally well with a mature head.”Australia are ahead in the series with four matches to play and Faulkner expected it to be a close fight between the two top ODI teams.”Both teams are ranked 1 and 2 for a reason and you have season how close the games have been,” he said. “It was a kick in the guts, the second game in Jaipur. To score 360 and have them chase the total one down was really disappointing. We knew we had to bounce back with a good game tonight and now we are 2-1 up in the series. It’s going to be a really tough contest for the next four games.”

Kaneria loses spot-fixing appeal

Danish Kaneria has lost his ECB disciplinary appeal against two corruption convictions, although he could still have the length of his life ban from cricket reduced. The Pakistan legspinner was found guilty last year of inducing his former Essex team-mate Mervyn Westfield to take part in spot-fixing and bringing the game into disrepute. The ECB announced that Kaneria’s case had been rejected, although a further appeal against the sanction and costs will be heard at a later date. As well as a lifetime suspension, costs of £100,000 were imposed on Kaneria. His lawyer Farogh Naseem said they would continue to pursue an appeal through the High Court in London, once they had received the panel’s written decision.”The decision is disappointing, we are just waiting for the reasons behind it,” Kaneria told Sky Sports. “As soon as we know the reasons, we will take further steps.”Westfield, who was compelled to give evidence on behalf of the ECB, will also have an appeal against the length of his five-year ban assessed when the panel reconvenes, according to availability. In a statement, the ECB’s chief executive David Collier, said: “I welcome wholeheartedly the independent panel’s decision to dismiss Mr Kaneria’s appeal and uphold the earlier decision made by the cricket discipline commission last summer. I should like to thank the appeal panel for their time and diligence in hearing this case and I congratulate the ACCESS unit for its work in support of the successful prosecution of this corrupt activity. Corruption has no place in sport and ECB will continue to be vigilant and adopt a zero tolerance approach in this area.”Kaneria has continued to dispute his involvement in the episode, which saw Westfield jailed in February 2012 after pleading guilty to a charge of accepting or obtaining corrupt payments. He admitted to agreeing to concede a set number of runs from an over in a 2009 Pro40 match for Essex against Durham and named Kaneria, who is Pakistan’s most successful spinner in Tests, as the facilitator. As well as serving time in prison, Westfield was given a five-year suspension from the game, although he can play club cricket after three. He has, however, complained about his lack of support and initially refused to appear as a witness for the ECB at Kaneria’s appeal. Westfield’s absence could have undermined the ECB’s case – with Kaneria’s legal team threatening to pursue damages – and he was eventually forced to comply after a high-court order.Because of an agreement between boards affiliated to the ICC, the ECB ban is effective throughout world cricket and the PCB previously agreed to uphold it.

Watson likely to lead on Boxing Day

Shane Watson’s Australian Test captaincy debut on Boxing Day is now a “distinct possibility” following Michael Clarke’s suffering of a hamstring strain in the first Test against Sri Lanka, according to the national coach Mickey Arthur. While Clarke led his team in the field on the fourth day and after scans and treatment overnight will do so again on the fifth, his barely mobile state was plainly clear, leaving him in considerable doubt to be fit in time for the biggest date on the Australian cricket calendar. Arthur confirmed this, and mentioned the former wicketkeeper Brad Haddin among a quartet of batsmen in the queue to replace Clarke.”It is a distinct possibility, it would be a really good challenge for Shane,” Arthur said. “We’ll learn a lot about Shane and his leadership ability, I’m confident he will come through it very well. If it does materialise, it will be a really good opportunity for him.”That batter, whoever it is, would have to be part of our extended squad. There are possibilities. [Brad] Haddin’s one of them, [Rob] Quiney’s one of them and certainly Usman Khawaja’s very much in the frame. Alex Doolan has played well also.”Arthur said Clarke was resolved to stay out in the field so long as the Test needed to be won, and having taken two wickets on the fourth evening Australia look in fair shape to take a 1-0 series lead on the final day.”He will get all the treatment he needs, he will get that after hours tonight and he will get that tomorrow between breaks,” Arthur said. “You would have to cut Michael’s leg off for him not to be out there. He certainly wants to marshal the troops and he wants to be there if hopefully sometime we can clinch a win. We don’t know exactly the extent of the injury just yet. We will wait for the scan and once we have the scan we will be able to assess.”Arthur also confirmed that Ben Hilfenhaus’ side injury was serious enough to rule him out of the Boxing Day Test and in all probability the New Year’s Test in Sydney. He nominated Jackson Bird and Nathan Coulter-Nile as the two men most likely to join the squad in Melbourne, as Australia’s list of injured fast bowlers has now extended to seven.”All I can say is we’ve had a list of bowlers leading into our summer, and we’re well down the list at the moment,” Arthur said. “But it’s going to be a fantastic opportunity for a couple of those guys. The names that have been on everyone’s lips are guys like Jackson Bird, it could be Nathan Coulter-Nile, and that will form part of the discussions we have tonight.”

Katich hundred begins Hampshire payback

Simon Katich wants to pay back Hampshire for helping to turn him into a Test cricketer – and an unbeaten 180 against Yorkshire will do for a start

Yorkshire may have looked to Australia for a solution to last summer’s relegation, but it was Hampshire’s own recruit from down under who transformed the opening day with Simon Katich marking his return to Headingley with his highest first-class score in four years. The first team coach Jason Gillespie, senior batsman Phil Jacques and overseas signing Mitchell Starc were all recruited from Australia by Yorkshire during the winter and charged with securing an immediate return to the first division, and until today’s turnaround their formula was working with successive wins over Gloucestershire and Leicestershire taking them to joint top of the table.Should Yorkshire fail to record three championship wins in a row for the first time since 2005, they can blame their failure to dislodge Katich as a major reason for their frustration. He began by rescuing a dismal start to Hampshire’s innings, and finished it unbeaten on 180 – his highest innings since scoring 157 for Australia against West Indies at Bridgetown in 2008.Currently on his fifth county, a sequence which began at Durham in 2000 and included a short spell with Yorkshire in 2002, Katich’s first job was to repair an innings that was in danger of collapse before lunch on the opening day after Hampshire won the toss and chose to bat.Liam Dawson fell before a run was scored, earning Ryan Sidebottom his 550th first-class wicket by edging behind, and the tone for the early overs was set.Jimmy Adams fell lbw to Steve Patterson and Michael Carberry edged Iain Wardlaw to slip attempting a drive that could be regarded as a little too extravagant in the circumstances. Plucked from league cricket by Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale mid-way through last summer, Wardlaw was unfortunate that umpire Steve Gale rejected an lbw appeal against Katich from the next delivery.Having made his Test debut at Headingley 11 years ago, Katich will no doubt always have happy memories of the place, an affection which will have strengthened by several reprieves during an innings which began in the sixth over of the day. He was dropped on 114 by Sidebottom at mid-on and then smashed a return catch back at Adil Rashid on 144, but was otherwise dominant throughout the day.It is the first major innings he has played since returning to Hampshire, a county he wants to help for their role in helping to regain his place in Australia’s Test side after his previous spell between 2002 and 2005. “I feel I owe the club for the opportunities they gave me nine years ago,” said Katich, now 36. “It certainly helped me get back to playing Test cricket for Australia, so it would be nice at this stage of my career to give something back.”Sean Ervine, the former Zimbabwe batsman, helped Katich add 124 for the fifth wicket but was caught at deep mid-on after getting a leading edge against Root, a deserved reward for an impressive spell from the Kirkstall Lane End. Captain Andrew Gale was suitably enough impressed to continue with Root immediately after tea and remove Rashid from the attack. If Yorkshire believed Ervine’s dismissal would allow them to rally in the final session, they were to be disappointed. Instead Michael Bates, 21, helped himself to a championship-best score of 88 and enjoyed an unbroken 145-run stand with Katich that ensured Hampshire made the most of the sunny conditions.”Batsmen have had it tough the first part of the season and now with a bit of sun, hopefully it will be a little tougher for the bowlers,” Katich said.
