After Zubimendi: Arsenal hold positive talks to sign "immense" £40m+ ace

With Martin Zubimendi already on the way, Arsenal have also now reportedly held positive talks to sign a defensive target over Liverpool who’s worth more than £40m.

Arsenal complete paperwork for Martin Zubimendi deal

A year on from deciding to stay at Real Sociedad instead of joining Liverpool, Zubimendi is finally set to become a Premier League player. But it’s Arsenal who have reason to celebrate. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Gunners have now completed all the paperwork and the Spaniard will become an Arsenal player for a fee around the €65m (£58m) mark.

Zubimendi could yet have the task of replacing Thomas Partey in Mikel Arteta’s side. The latter is yet to sign a new deal at the club and remains on course to depart as a free agent at the start of next month.

As replacements go, it’s clear to see why Arsenal have turned towards Zubimendi as speculation continues to grow about Partey’s future. The talented 26-year-old would slot straight in.

Zubimendi’s best work undoubtedly comes in possession and Arteta’s system should provide him with the perfect platform to showcase that ability in the Premier League.

After agreeing a deal to sign the midfielder, however, Arsenal are not done there. They’re looking to deal Liverpool a blow with a focus on signing a defensive addition ahead of the Premier League champions this summer.

Arsenal hold positive talks to sign Jorrel Hato

According to reports relayed by Football Transfers, Arsenal have now held positive talks to sign Jorrel Hato from Ajax this summer. The Dutchman has also attracted the interest of Liverpool, but the Gunners are now hoping to steal a march on their rivals.

The deal won’t come cheap, though. Reports are suggesting that Ajax are demanding as much as €50m (£42m) to sell their 19-year-old left-back in the coming months. Alas, it must be said that price tag becomes understandable when assessing just how talented Hato already is at such a young age.

Ajax defender Jorrel Hato.

Among those full of praise for the Ajax teenager, scout Jacek Kulig dubbed Hato a player with “immense quality” and a “fantatsic mix of complete full-back, playmaking full-back, and ball-playing centre-back” in traits that tick all of Arsenal’s boxes.

As the chaos of the transfer window continues, those in North London should do everything to ensure that they beat Liverpool to Hato’s signature this summer.

Romano: Liverpool lead race to sign another 21 y/o defender after talks

Liverpool are now leading the race to complete the signing of a “great” player in the summer transfer window, according to a new update from Fabrizio Romano.

Liverpool eyeing signings on either flank

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have been a legendary full-back pairing for the Reds over the past seven or eight years, but there is a changing of the guard at Anfield this summer.

Sadly, Alexander-Arnold has opted to leave Liverpool in order to almost certainly join Real Madrid, which unsurprisingly hasn’t gone down well with many supporters, while Robertson isn’t the force he once was at left-back – no surprise, considering he is now 31 and has years of relentless running behind him.

Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold

Jeremie Frimpong is set to arrive from Bayer Leverkusen, potentially coming in as a right-back, but he is also more than capable of taking up a more attacking right-sided role. It remains to be seen how Arne Slot will use him, and if Conor Bradley will be first-choice right-back moving forward.

Meanwhile, Milos Kerkez has emerged as the strongest option at left-back, following an excellent season with Bournemouth, although Fulham’s Antonee Robinson and Ajax teenager Jorrel Hato have also been mentioned as options. Manchester City have reportedly been looking to hijack a move for Kerkez, though, being seen as “genuine rivals” for his signature.

Liverpool in pole position to sign Kerkez after talks

Taking to X on Sunday, Romano said that Liverpool are in pole position to sign Kerkez from Bournemouth this summer, with talks continuing to head in the right direction:

Kerkez really does feel like the natural fit to come in and be Liverpool’s new first-choice left-back, ticking so many boxes, in terms of what Slot will be looking for.

The 21-year-old Hungary international is strong at both ends of the pitch, bagging seven goal contributions (two goals and five assists) in the Premier League this season, as well as averaging 2.6 clearances and 1.4 tackles per game.

In fact, Kerkez’s performances haven’t been lost on Slot, who has said he has enjoyed a “great season”, while football talent scout Jacek Kulig called him “amazing” after Bournemouth beat Manchester City earlier in the season.

At this point, it could be a surprise if the Cherries star didn’t join Liverpool, in a summer transfer window that is already threatening to be legendary.

If the Reds manage to sign Kerkez, Frimpong, Florian Wirtz and a top-quality striker, it will be significant business that may only make them far stronger heading into next season.

Dream for Odegaard: Arsenal chasing "one of the best players in the world"

While the fans and team will have their full attention on the second leg of their Champions League semi-final next week, the Arsenal board will already be planning for what could be a blockbuster summer of transfer business.

Last year, Mikel Arteta and Co shifted a lot of the club’s unwanted players for good money, but they didn’t really strengthen the first team enough to sustain a successful title challenge this season.

It looks like it’s going to be a totally different story this year, with links to top-level attackers like Viktor Gyokeres, Ollie Watkins and Nico Williams coming in from every direction.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetareacts

However, while the frontline certainly needs addressing, the midfield could be just as important, and it seems like the club agrees; a recent report has touted one of the most exciting midfielders in world football for a move to the Emirates, a player who might just be able to get the best back out of Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal's midfield targets

Before getting to the player in question, it’s worth looking at a couple of the other midfielders that Arsenal are said to be interested in, such as Hugo Larsson.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Reportedly available for around £51m, the Eintracht Frankfurt gem would undoubtedly be an investment for the future, but with respected analyst Ben Mattinson describing him as a “transitional monster” and comparing him to a young Jude Bellingham, he might just be one worth making.

However, the far more likely acquisition would undoubtedly be Martin Zubimendi.

The Spanish international has long been touted for a move to the Gunners, and based on more recent reports, it appears the club themselves are confident of getting their man.

However, perhaps the most exciting link of them all has been to Frenkie de Jong.

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are now one of several Premier League sides interested in the Dutch international.

Alongside the Gunners, the report has revealed that Liverpool and Manchester City are also keen on the player.

Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong

While no price is mentioned in the story, it is said that Barcelona are being forced to consider selling him as no progress has been made on his renewal.

It would be an incredibly costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but given his immense ability, it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he could help revive Odegaard.

Why De Jong would be perfect for Odegaard

So, if Arsenal are able to get ahead of the chasing pack and get their man, why would he be an ideal partner for Odegaard?

There are two key reasons for this; the first is his defensive qualities.

While the Dutchman is now primarily an eight and would likely join as such, he’s got plenty of experience playing as a six – making 132 appearances there – and so, were he to chip in with the defensive work alongside Declan Rice, that might allow the captain to focus all of his energy and focus at the sharp end of the pitch.

The second reason is that, on top of his defensive abilities, the former Ajax star is an incredibly technical and gifted midfielder, with former manager Xavi going as far as describing him as “one of the best players in the world.”

It’s not hard to see where the Spanish legend is coming from either, as the 27-year-old’s underlying numbers are nothing short of spectacular.

Afridi then, Tamim now, and many more… eleven cricketers who returned for an encore

Some legendary men have risen from the ashes, with instances going four decades back

Harigovind S09-Jul-2023Cricket has been the site of retirement reversals in 2023 – first when Moeen Ali returned for the Ashes and then when Tamim Iqbal cut his retirement short to a six-week break. That got us thinking: what if a cricket team was composed of players who hung their boots only to slip back into them later?

Bob Simpson

Sixty-two-Test-veteran Bob Simpson had been out of international cricket for a decade when Australia’s reserves were stretched thin ahead of the 1977 India series, thanks to Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket. Simpson, then 41 years old, hauled himself out of retirement and went on to score 539 runs in ten hits.

Tamim Iqbal

The mood was sombre when Tamim Iqbal called time on his illustrious career in a tearful press conference, one day after Bangladesh had lost to Afghanistan and three months before the 2023 ODI World Cup, in India. But after an intervention by Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, Tamim took a u-turn.

Javed Miandad

Upon finding himself dropped from the side in 1994, Pakistan’s batting wizard decided to bid farewell to cricket. “No Miandad, No Cricket,” wailed cricket fans as the country’s Prime Minister at the time, Benazir Bhutto, coaxed the maestro to make himself available again. Miandad obliged, but it wasn’t until 1996 that he next represented Pakistan.Getty Images

Kevin Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen was an early proponent of globetrotting in franchise leagues. And when he decided to end his international limited-overs career with four months to go to the 2012 World T20, England cricket was jolted. But less than 60 days later he said that he would never say no to a comeback. Come back he did, to play eight more ODIs and a T20I for England.

Carl Hooper

Carl Hooper, one of the most gifted players of his generation, sprung a surprise by announcing his Test retirement at the tender age of 32. However, after West Indies’ barren streak in 2001, the prodigal son returned to lead them in a home series against New Zealand, India, and South Africa, eventually retiring in 2003.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa

Familial obligations were the official reason given by Bhanuka Rajapaksa when he announced his retirement from internationals in early 2022. His ‘hasty’ decision was met with disapproval from Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Namal Rajapaksa. Following a meeting between the two and a consultation with the national selectors, Rajapaksa expressed his wish to represent his country in the game he loves for the years to come.Afridi and Miandad both came out of retirement•AFP

Imran Khan

The legendary Imran Khan had decided to call it a day after Pakistan’s defeat to Australia in the 1987 World Cup semi-final. Imran had a change of heart when he was asked to represent Pakistan again by President Zia-ul-Haq. Imran would retire five years later, as a World Cup winner.

Moeen Ali

Moeen had retired from Test cricket in 2021 but found himself answering an SOS call ahead of the 2023 Ashes when Jack Leach was ruled out. His second coming to Tests saw him breach 200 wickets in the format, two years after leaving the ring five short of the milestone.

Shahid Afridi

In 2006, 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2017 were the retirements, and in 2006, 2011 and 2016 came the comebacks. But behind the metronomic speed of his retirements sat one of the most influential cricketers of the modern era: there was little on the cricket field that Afridi couldn’t do, and a place always seemed open for him.Srinath in South Africa: playing his final World Cup•Getty Images

Javagal Srinath

Javagal Srinath left the Caribbean in 2002 having made up his mind that he had played his last Test. However, Sourav Ganguly would have none of it. Ganguly convinced Srinath to come out of retirement and play three more Tests and lead the attack at the 2003 World Cup, where India were runners-up.

Jerome Taylor

Jerome Taylor’s 46-Test career came to a halt when he decided to end his Test prospects to focus on the shorter formats – but things took an unexpected turn when he wasn’t picked in any white-ball matches for the next 14 months. He promptly reversed his Test retirement but hasn’t donned the whites since.

Cole McConchie set to live his childhood dream for New Zealand

He’s a readymade fit for Mitchell Santner’s role and brings leadership experience too

Deivarayan Muthu10-Aug-2021In 2012, allrounder Cole McConchie received his maiden Plunket Shield cap from then Canterbury coach Gary Stead. Nine years later, in the midst of a pandemic, McConchie received the news of his maiden international call-up, for the upcoming tours to Bangladesh and Pakistan, from Stead, who is now New Zealand’s head coach.”I was actually on the golf course and Gary’s number came up and thought it was going to be some good or bad news,” McConchie said. “[It was] a real privilege to get the call from Steady and some really great news for myself and my family.”I gave my wife Sarah a call straightaway, followed by my parents. It was really special getting that phone call; a childhood dream and for that to come true, it was a pretty special moment.”The 29-year old initially started out as an offspinner who could bat a bit, but has expanded his all-round game in recent times. Throw in his reflexes in the field and you get an impressive package, which is why New Zealand are leaning towards him in the absence of Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi for the T20Is in Bangladesh and the ODI Super league in Pakistan. In the 2020-21 20-over Super Smash, McConchie emerged as the fifth-highest scorer, with 298 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 120.16, in Canterbury’s run to the final, where they lost to Wellington. McConchie was also thrifty with his offspin; his economy rate of 7.40 was the third best among bowlers who had bowled more than 25 overs in the tournament. Only Otago left-arm wristspinner Michael Rippon and Canterbury team-mate Todd Astle had a better economy rate than McConchie under this condition.Related

Stead said that McConchie has been drafted in to play the role Santner usually does for New Zealand in T20Is: finish the innings with the bat and provide control with the ball.”It’s exciting for Cole,” Stead said. “When you rule Santner and Sodhi out of the early stages, and Astle not going initially as well, you start looking around for who are the next options on the table. Guys like Cole have been consistent for Canterbury and the thing we liked as well is he’s got some batting depth to him. We certainly look at him for filling a role that’s something similar to Santner’s – in terms of a finishing type role with the bat and being able to bowl at different stages of an innings.”McConchie also brings with him New Zealand A experience and the experience of being Canterbury’s captain. Under his leadership, Canterbury won the Plunket Shield and Ford Trophy titles in the last domestic summer.”It has been really special playing for New Zealand A against quality international sides and guys with a lot of international experience,” McConchie said. “So, when you succeed at that level, it fills you with some optimism that you could succeed at international cricket. So, those have been great opportunities to test your skills at a further level up and [I’m] really grateful for those opportunities.”Yeah, I think I’ve really enjoyed the leadership role and I know certainly from a playing point of view, I feel a bit more ownership in terms of my game and really try to push the team ahead. Always want to lead from the front in that regard.”McConchie also reckoned that bouncing ideas off Canterbury internationals Tom Latham, Matt Henry and Henry Nicholls will hold him in good stead in the lead-up to his potential international debut.”Really fortunate to have grown up with the likes of Tom Latham, Matt Henry and Henry Nicholls – three really good friends of mine – and I think leaning on their international experience, talking to them [about] what it’s like at the next level,” he said. “What you need to do to be successful. Those three have been great sounding boards for myself and they’ve passed on a lot of experience and that has helped my game immensely. “McConchie has never toured Bangladesh before and the hosts are in scorching form, having dispatched Australia 4-1, but this is his chance to showcase his all-round skills at the top level.

Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange's very different director roles at Tottenham explained

Tottenham announced their new leadership structure earlier this week with Fabio Paratici and Johan Lange both working as co-sporting directors, and there’s now been clarity as to specifically how they will operate together at N17.

Spurs announce Fabio Paratici return with Johan Lange promoted

Many speculated that Paratici’s return could spell the end for Lange’s involvement in Spurs’ recruitment strategy, but as confirmed by the club, he’ll be working side by side with the popular Italian.

Paratici, who worked as a consultant for months before coming back full-time — advising Lange, CEO Vinai Venkatesham, Thomas Frank and ex-chair Daniel Levy — officially returns to North London over two years after he was forced to resign due to his worldwide ban.

The 53-year-old played a significant role in the signings of key Tottenham stars, including Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, Pedro Porro, Rodrigo Bentancur, Djed Spence, Destiny Udogie and Pape Sarr, with his comeback seen as a major boost for the Lilywhites.

He was a key ally of Levy, and the latter’s exit after 25 years last month threatened to derail a move for Paratici (talkSPORT).

However, Venkatesham, regardless of Levy’s departure, ultimately decided that Paratici should be involved in an official capacity, and it’s hard to argue given the transfer chief’s track record, extensive contact list and reputation as a fierce negotiator.

Paratici and Lange's very different Tottenham director roles explained

While Paratici and Lange are ‘co-sporting directors’ by title, the duo will actually have very different tasks, as explained by Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

It is believed that Paratici will be the ‘dealmaker’, overseeing the task of getting star players through the door, while Lange’s responsibilities are geared more towards scouting and talent-spotting.

Paratici’s reputation as a transfer expert precedes him.

Having honed his skills at Juventus and Tottenham before, he is known for his shrewd negotiation tactics, ability to close high-profile moves and strategic approach to the market. Paratici excels at identifying the right moment to strike whilst leveraging relationships with clubs and agents to secure key signings.

By contrast, Lange brings a keen eye for talent and a deep understanding of player development.

His background as a technical director at FC Copenhagen and sporting director at Aston Villa highlights his experience in scouting and building a sustainable recruitment strategy.

Lange’s focus on the long-term pipeline of talent, youth integration and data-driven scouting will back up Paratici’s deal-closing prowess, with the duo set to complement eachother nicely and divide key responsibilities.

It is a fantastic move by Spurs, and if their dynamic proves successful, other Premier League sides may even take inspiration.

Bayern Munich ready £105m bid for Chelsea star after ‘constantly’ discussing him

Bayern Munich are reportedly planning a very bold swoop for one of Enzo Maresca’s key Chelsea stars, with the Bavarians repeatedly talking about him in behind-the-scenes meetings.

Chelsea seek first December win against Everton

Chelsea host Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, desperately searching for momentum after enduring their worst run of recent form under Maresca this season.

The Blues have gone four consecutive matches without victory across all competitions, slipping to fifth in the Premier League table and falling eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

Since their impressive 3-0 Champions League triumph over Barcelona last month, Maresca’s side have struggled to recapture that dominant form.

Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat at Atalanta also dealt a significant blow to Chelsea’s hopes of automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16, leaving them 11th in the league phase standings and two points outside the crucial top eight positions with just two games remaining.

Joao Pedro’s opener proved insufficient as the Italian side turned the contest around through second-half strikes from Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere.

Chelsea’s domestic struggles have been equally concerning.

Chelsea set to sign "next-gen Yaya Toure" after reaching "full agreement"

They’ve won the race for his signature.

ByEmilio Galantini 4 days ago

A 3-1 loss at Leeds United followed their hard-fought 1-1 draw with ten men against Arsenal, before a lifeless goalless stalemate at Bournemouth extended their winless streak.

Maresca’s side have dropped more points from winning positions at home than any other Premier League team this season, with eight points surrendered after taking leads at Stamford Bridge.

Everton arrive in buoyant spirits having won four of their last five Premier League matches, keeping clean sheets in all four victories.

David Moyes’ resurgent side currently sit seventh, just two points behind Chelsea and firmly in contention for European qualification.

Consecutive away wins at Man United and Bournemouth will have their tails firmly up, and the Toffees will draw more confidence from Chelsea’s vulnerability right now.

That being said, Everton haven’t won at Stamford Bridge since November 1994 and remain winless across their last 35 visits in all competitions.

Moyes has personally never won there in 20 attempts, so it’s been quite a sorry hunting ground for the Scotsman.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall returns to face his former club having flourished since his summer departure, scoring three goals in his last four appearances, and the midfielder will be determined to haunt his former employers.

For Chelsea, vice-captain and star engine room man Enzo Fernández will be tasked with containing him.

The Argentine has been key for Maresca ever since his appointment last year, bagging seven goal contributions in a more advanced midfield role this season alone.

Fernandez’s excellent form has attracted interest from Real Madrid, and now Bayern are among the elite European clubs circling for his signature.

Bayern Munich prepare £105m bid for Chelsea star Enzo Fernández

According to reports from Spain, Allianz Arena chiefs have been ‘constantly’ discussing the World Cup winner in recruitment meetings, with Vincent Kompany’s side planning to make a marquee bid.

Indeed, it is believed that Bayern are now preparing a £105 million offer to sign Fernandez from Chelsea, but the west Londoners’ stance on selling their star man is crystal clear.

While a bid that size could get Chelsea contemplating the 24-year-old’s future, the current noise is that they have absolutely no desire to part company.

Fernandez is tied down with a long-term contract until 2032 as well, meaning BlueCo have complete control over his future.

Kompany believes that Fernandez’s arrival would seriously upgrade the team and complement Joshua Kimmich in the middle of the park, so Bayern are the ‘most determined’ to open talks ahead of 2026.

However, Chelsea’s public stance is that he’s not for sale, even if Bayern are ready to make ‘initial contact’.

Regardless of the potential proposal on Maresca’s doorstep, Chelsea made over £314 million in player sales last summer and actually registered a net spend of just £18 million.

Financially, there is absolutely no pressure whatsoever to entertain any offer for Fernandez, so Bayern may need to look somewhere else.

Dave Roberts Reacts to Earning Record-Breaking Contract With Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers and manager Dave Roberts agreed to a historic $32.4 million contract extension this week, making Roberts MLB's highest-paid manager at a salary of $8.1 million per year. Roberts was entering the final year of the three-year contract he signed with the Dodgers in 2022, and after winning his second World Series last season, it wasn't a surprise to see him receive a record extension.

On Monday, Roberts expressed his excitement about the new contract and also the chance to get closure after his coaching seat was warm following two consecutive losses in the National League Division Series in 2022 and 2023.

“I can’t talk about it so much, but obviously there’s some closure,’’ Roberts said, via 's Bob Nightengale. “I’m excited. This is the place where I always wanted to be. I just love what we’re doing. This is pretty special."

Now, Roberts's position as the team's manager remains secure through the 2029 season. Roberts enters his 10th season with the Dodgers as the leader among all active head coaches in win percentage, and fourth overall all-time.

“There’s obviously things off the field that are important," Roberts said. "I try to make sure that my focus stays on the players, the game, the Dodgers organization. I think I’ve done a good job. … But the other part of that stuff is just part of the job and I’m looking forward to some closure for sure.’’

Several of Roberts's players were also thrilled to see him receive the new extension.

“He deserves this so much. He’s put in the time," said shortstop Miguel Rojas, via Nightengale. "He’s been through a lot, you know. … it couldn't happen to a better person."

“We’re all excited. I couldn’t be happier for him," said third baseman Max Muncy
