Derbyshire rue missed opportunities as Marcus Harris digs in

Dropped catches outnumber wickets taken as Leicestershire prosper between showers

ECB Reporters Network19-Apr-2024Leicestershire 168 for 2 (Harris 77*) vs DerbyshireAustralian opener Marcus Harris underpinned Leicestershire on a day when Derbyshire fluffed their lines in the Vitality County Championship match at Derby.Harris kept his concentration through lengthy rain delays to score an unbeaten 77 from 147 balls but was dropped twice after Derbyshire elected to bowl first on a chilly opening day at the County Ground. Derbyshire also put down Rishi Patel who made 36 before he was bowled by New Zealand fast bowler Blair Tickner, who was the pick of the attack.Although 50 overs were lost, Leicestershire made good progress and closed on 168 for 2 with skipper Lewis Hill not out 34.Derbyshire’s previous home game against Gloucestershire had been a complete washout with no play possible on any of the four days and there was more frustration despite the match starting in bright sunshine. That proved to be deceptive as steely grey clouds rolled in with only 18 overs bowled in the morning session after Derbyshire put Leicestershire in on a green-tinged pitch.Derbyshire brought in fast bowler Pat Brown for only the ninth Championship game of his career with Ben Green making his Leicestershire debut following his loan move from Somerset.Sam Conners and Tickner shared the new ball and should have had both openers in the first half-hour of the day. Harris had made only 1 when he edged Tickner to second slip in the fourth over but Wayne Madsen put down a shoulder high chance. It was the sort of catch Madsen usually takes and there was more frustration for the home side when Patel was given a life on nine two overs later. Conners found the right-hander’s outside edge only to see Aneurin Donald spill the ball diving to his right at third slip. After electing to bowl, those chances had to be taken and Patel and Harris took advantage to guide Leicestershire past 50 before rain halted play shortly after midday. When play resumed at 2.05pm, there was more there for the bowlers but Derbyshire put down a third chance three overs into the afternoon session. Harris, who early on did not look entirely convincing, was on 26 when he edged Anuj Dal low to Madsen, who again failed to cling on.But the stand was broken in the next over when Tickner, who had posed questions for the batters with his disciplined line, found enough away movement to beat Patel’s forward defensive push and knock out off stump.Harris was six short of his fifty when the rain returned and kept the players off the field until 5.30pm. When the game restarted, Derbyshire quickly claimed a second wicket. Louis Kimber played at a good length ball from Conners without any foot movement and edged to third slip where Donald this time made no mistake. But the rest of a truncated day belonged to Harris and Hill who scored freely in the closing overs to take Leicestershire in two down.

Rocky Flintoff, 16, hits maiden century for Lancashire 2nd XI

Rocky Flintoff, the 16-year-old son of former England allrounder Andrew, has scored his maiden century for Lancashire’s 2nd XI, reaching three figures against Warwickshire at Edgbaston after a 39-run partnership with his older brother Corey.Flintoff only made his second-team debut earlier this month, two days after his 16th birthday, but scored an unbeaten 50 against Durham at Emirates Old Trafford last week, and brought up a 151-ball hundred on Tuesday against a Warwickshire attack which included former England Lions spinner Jake Lintott.

Batting at No. 5, Flintoff hit several early boundaries off Warwickshire’s highly-rated, Barbados-born seamer Che Simmons, including an inside-edge past his leg stump. He also hit a brace of leg-side sixes, the first reminiscent of his dad’s pull shot and the second an effortless pick-up over midwicket.Flintoff put on exactly 100 in 14.3 overs with Saqib Mahmood, the England fast bowler, who is captaining Lancashire’s 2nd XI as he continues his rehabilitation from a back stress fracture and is targeting a first-team return next month. He also spent 13 overs batting with his older Corey, 18, with the pair adding 39 for the seventh wicket.Related

State of the USMNT – Midfielders: 'MMA' core of Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah and Tyler Adams is no longer inevitable, with new combinations now in play for the World Cup

With the 2026 World Cup less than a year away, GOAL looks at the state of the central midfielders vying for spots next summer

Throughout Gregg Berhalter's tenure, the U.S. men's national team was built around the midfield of Weston McKennie, Yunus Musah and Tyler Adams. Nicknamed the MMA Midfield, that group was the backbone of the USMNT, and it was easy to see why. Young, energetic and athletic enough to go toe-to-toe with the very best, that group was supposed to make up the USMNT's present and future.

It still could. Nearly three years on from the World Cup in Qatar, all three are at major clubs in major leagues. All three have so much USMNT experience and the physical and technical qualities to play at the highest levels. The thing is? They aren't alone anymore. The midfield competition has exploded, and no one's spot is safe because of that fact – in a good way, for Mauricio Pochettino, anyway.

Players such as Malik Tillman and Johnny Cardoso are at big clubs themselves, having just made massive transfers to Bayer Leverkusen and Atletico Madrid, respectively. Both have real arguments to be USMNT starters but, like the MMA group, they also come with question marks.

There are no sure things in the center of the park and, just a year out from the World Cup, the midfield is the USMNT's most malleable position as Pochettino looks to sort it all out.

Post-Gold Cup, GOAL is looking at the state of the USMNT, analyzing the positional battles that will ultimately define next summer's team. Next up: midfielders.

AFPThe Starters: Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, Malik Tillman

Realistically, the only one of the above that seems a lock is Adams, and even he doesn't feel as etched in stone as under the previous regime. The Bournemouth star didn't play to his highest level this summer. He, of course, can be a force in midfield, one that allows those next to him to play their game and not worry about all of the dirty things that he ends up doing. You also can't discount his leadership and, as a result, he's the best bet to start in midfield.

McKennie has partnered with Adams for much of their USMNT careers, and he's another one who is a true game-changer when he's in form. His presence on both sides of the field is huge and his ability to pop up with a set piece goal every now and then will be important in a tournament setting. For McKennie, though, it'll come down to how he's faring on the club level – and if he can find another gear under Pochettino, who is clearly laying down challenges.

That leads us to Tillman, who could be the newest face in this starting group. Prior to the Gold Cup, he hadn't gotten an extended runout with the U.S. But after a summer helping ignite the run to the Gold Cup final, he seems ready to leap right into the A-team.

His big move to Bayer Leverkusen should help him raise his game to a new level and, if that happens, the U.S. has one heck of a young playmaker – and one with much more room to grow for club and country.

AdvertisementGettyThe Backups: Johnny Cardoso, Yunus Musah, Tanner Tessmann

Underscoring the depth at the position, all three of these guys could be starting by the time the World Cup rolls around. Still, all three also have obvious areas that need improvement to make that happen.

For all of his club successes – and there are plenty given his recent move to Atletico Madri – Cardoso has never quite shone for the USMNT. Musah, in some ways, has the opposite problem. While he's generally been decent for the U.S., his inability to break through at Milan has limited his growth, leading to questions over his future.

Both Cardoso and Musah are supremely talented, but both have legitimate questions that need answers.

Tessmann, meanwhile, is in a decent situation in Lyon, despite all of the chaos surrounding the club. That seems to be behind them, allowing players such as Tessmann to focus on what's ahead. He was left out of this summer's Gold Cup squad in what could be a not-so-subtle message from Pochettino, who appears to have told several players from this second tier to step up, or step out of the way.

We'll see how Tessmann fares, but his abilities as a defensive midfielder could make him an asset, either as a starter or off the bench. Note: Diego Luna could also be included among this group as a No. 10, but for now, he'll be in the mix at winger.

Getty Images SportIn The Mix: Gio Reyna, Luca de la Torre, Sebastian Berhalter, Gianluca Busio, Aidan Morris

Numerous names here but, realistically, there's one that stands out.

Reyna, at the moment, probably isn't on the World Cup squad. So much of his future, both short and long-term, depends on where he ends up at the club level. On talent alone, he belongs with the USMNT, but he's put that on display so infrequently over recent years that it's hard to keep waiting. There's a chance, yes, but, on current form, Reyna has work to do.

As for the others, Berhalter and De la Torre played their way into the mix with strong Gold Cups, showing that, while imperfect, both have skillsets that can help the team. Berhalter's energy and set-piece delivery are assets. So, too, are De la Torre's passing and ability to control a game. They now need to crush it in MLS.

Busio and Morris have been in and around the team, but both will need to step up on the club level to earn spots going forward. Note: Brenden Aaronson and Jack McGlynn could be included in this group but, like Luna, are with the wingers at the moment. McGlynn, notably, will likely shift inside at some point.

Aaronson was in the U.S. squad this summer but barely played after the USMNT mess in the pre-Gold Cup clobbering by Switzerland. In total, he played just nine minutes at the Gold Cup, which was somewhat surprising given his club successes this past season in the Eredivisie.

He looks set to get a real shot at Eintracht Frankfurt this season and, which could make for a huge leap forward for the younger Aaronson brother. Cremaschi, meanwhile, continues to improve with Inter Miami under the tutelage of Lionel Messi. With Rodrigo De Paul reportedly set to join the team, Cremaschi's development will be even more interesting as he hopes leap into the USMNT picture.

– Time precisa ser primeiro equilibrado. Independentemente do esquema tático – comentou.

VEJA OUTRAS RESPOSTAS DO TÉCNICO FERNANDO LÁZARO

NOVA RELAÇÃO COM OS JOGADORES
Todos querem estar participando e jogando o máximo.

Importante aquisição do clube.

PCB confirms PSL expansion from 2026 with two new teams

The PSL will get two new franchises from 2026, making it an eight-team league. This was officially confirmed in a statement by the PCB on Friday, which called the upcoming season in 2025 – the tenth edition – the “last six-team event”.While this had been likely from the day the PCB and the PSL franchises agreed not to add further teams until after the tenth season, this is the first time the PCB has publicly confirmed the PSL expansion. Multan Sultans’ entry in 2018 has been the only addition to the original five so far. The process for deciding which cities the new teams represent has not begun yet.The year following the tenth season is potentially one of sizeable flux and jeopardy for the PSL, with the ten-year lease ownership agreements the PSL reached with franchise owners expiring in 2025. ESPNcricinfo understands Sultans’ lease is also up for renewal next year, despite them joining the PSL two years after the rest. All six owners have right of first refusal, meaning ownership of a franchise only goes up for sale in the event of a current owner declining to match the franchise’s valuation. What is more contentious, however, is when the PSL will be played from next season onwards. The Champions Trophy will be played in the traditional PSL window in February-March, and with the ILT20 and the SA20 cutting in on PSL territory, the PCB wants a more reliable window. Their current preferred solution is the move the PSL into April and May, carving out a six week window from April 7 to May 20 next year, and clashing directly with the IPL. More contentiously, the PCB aims to make this the PSL’s permanent window rather than an ad hoc solution to a crowded calendar next year.Related

  • PSL set for IPL clash as PCB proposes move to April-May window

  • ILT20 2025 to begin on January 11, set to clash with BBL and SA20

There is by no means universal agreement for this option. Most of the PSL franchises initially opposed the idea because of the implications it would have on player availability and the inevitability of playing second fiddle to the IPL, and at least three of the six franchises remain firmly opposed to it. A PCB official, though, told ESPNcricinfo they remain confident the franchises will come around to it. It is also worth noting that franchise opposition to the idea cannot necessarily stop it happening; those decisions are made by the PSL governing council. De facto, that means the PCB could decide to play the tournament in any window, with or without the support of the franchises. The PCB has offered to tweak player recruitment rules and open up fiscal space to allow franchises to sign one marquee player independently of the draft to alleviate concerns around player availability. With their current broadcast partnership ending in 2025, the next season could effectively become a test case for the future viability of hosting the league at the same time as the IPL. In addition, the league’s expansion to eight teams would have necessitated a larger window anyway, with the three-month window currently carved out for the IPL providing enough time for a slightly extended PSL.However, this also necessarily means the PSL will effectively only have overseas players available to them who go unselected at the IPL, given the large financial disparity between the two leagues. This, for example, effectively rules out Rashid Khan turning out for the Lahore Qalandars – one of the franchises opposed to the window – for the foreseeable future. Qalandars opted to retain him for PSL 2024 despite knowing he would not be fit to ensure they would be able to keep the Afghanistan legspinner the following year. However, it is likely he would turn out for the IPL if the two leagues clash.ESPNcricinfo also understands the PCB is seriously exploring the possibility of hosting the playoffs and final of PSL 2025 in the UK if this April/May window is finalised. Lahore is unseasonably hot in mid-May – temperatures are currently hovering in the mid-40s. The move to the UK, according to the PCB, does more than mitigate against the weather, though; it also globalises the reach of the PSL. The UK is also believed to be a more cost-effective option than the UAE, which has, in the past, hosted every PSL match that did not take place in Pakistan.

Toughest-ever county overseas market puts visa criteria in focus

ECB open to lobbying Home Office for rule changes if counties make proposals this month

Matt Roller03-May-2024Counties have been told they have until the end of May to propose changes to the ECB’s visa criteria for overseas players, after a challenging offseason for directors of cricket.Securing high-quality overseas players has never been harder for counties due to a congested domestic schedule, overlaps with an increasing number of franchise leagues and the unique challenge of a T20 World Cup in the middle of the English summer. As a result, many counties have brought in relatively unheralded overseas players this year. Many players would not have qualified for a visa under previous criteria but the ECB successfully lobbied the UK Home Office for a change in 2019. While visa criteria were previously linked exclusively to international caps, they have opened up so that players who have played 20 T20s in a full-member country in the previous three years are eligible. While the change has created a new route for a number of overseas players to qualify for a visa to play in county cricket, it has led to some unusual situations. One player agent said: “Some of our clients would have had opportunities to play Division One cricket in the County Championship, but they didn’t qualify for a visa due to the current T20-based criteria.”Related

Chris Tremain, who was the leading wicket-taker in the Sheffield Shield this season, was only able to stay at Northamptonshire for a month because he has only featured sporadically in the Big Bash League in recent seasons, so was only eligible for a short-term “permitted paid engagement” visa.Other leading Sheffield Shield bowlers including Victoria and Tasmania seamers Fergus O’Neill and Gabe Bell, plus Western Australia offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli, are understood to be ineligible for the “international sportsperson” visa which most overseas players use to travel to the UK for a county season.Simon Cook, Kent’s director of cricket, tracked South African seamer Beyers Swanepoel throughout the English winter but initially found he was ineligible due to insufficient T20 appearances. “We were really keen on him, looking at his numbers and his attributes as a seamer and then a left-hander who could give it a biff,” Cook said. “But he would only have qualified for a one-month visa.”Kent instead signed Xavier Bartlett on a multi-format deal but after Cricket Australia gave him a central contract, they changed the conditions of his No-Objection Certificate and blocked him from playing in the Championship. By that stage, Swanepoel had played enough matches in the CSA T20 Challenge – South Africa’s domestic competition – that he qualified for a longer visa.Chris Tremain, the Sheffield Shield’s leading wicket-taker, was only able to stay at Northants for a month•Getty ImagesThe ECB has an annual consultation period in which counties can propose changes to existing criteria. The governing body has no immediate plan to change the criteria but would listen to any proposals. These would then be sent to the ECB’s board for approval and be presented to the Home Office.Any change would need to satisfy the Home Office requirement that players looking to obtain a visa should “make a significant contribution to the development of their sport at the highest level in the UK”.Cook said: “The danger with opening it up too much is that you end up blocking opportunities for academy or second-team players that might otherwise get opportunities, and they end up drifting out of the game. You want overseas players coming over that will add value, and drive your existing group forwards.”Kent will briefly have four overseas seamers on their books competing for two spots in June, with Bartlett arriving for the Blast to join Swanepoel, Wes Agar and recent signing Charlie Stobo, the Western Australian seamer who will be able to play thanks to a UK ancestry visa. It is a reflection of an increasingly difficult overseas market for counties.”A baptism of fire is a good way of putting it,” said Cook, who became director of cricket at the end of last season after four years as the club’s bowling coach. “The window for players to be available for county cricket has shrunk significantly… it has been a perfect storm and there have been some significant challenges for us.”

The PCB’s schedule for the 2025 Champions Trophy could have India based in one city for the entire tournament, as the board looks for ways to accommodate a potential first visit by India to Pakistan in nearly 17 years.Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi are the three venues the PCB is planning to host the two-week Champions Trophy in. ESPNcricinfo understands the draft schedule has India based in and playing all their matches in Lahore – where the final is also scheduled to take place.Basing India in one city is thought to have been proposed because it avoids what could be considerable logistical and security headaches around their travel. Additionally, by being based in Lahore, which is close to the Wagah border crossing between the two countries, it allows Indian fans a relatively easier option to visit.PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said earlier this week that the board had sent a draft schedule of the tournament, likely to be staged in mid-February next year, to the ICC. Discussions on it involving the eight participating members will take place, with the major sticking point likely to be whether the India team travels or not.No Indian team has played in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup. Relations between the two governments have deteriorated steadily and often sharply since, especially after the Mumbai terror attacks the same year. Those attacks ended a rare period of bounty in the rivalry, the sides having played each other in four bilateral series in the preceding four years.Last year, when Pakistan hosted the Asia Cup, they were forced to deploy a hybrid model in which India played all their games – including those against Pakistan – in Sri Lanka. The final of the tournament, won by India, was held in Colombo.Though Pakistan had raised the prospect of a hybrid model for their presence in the ODI World Cup in India last year, it was never pursued seriously. On Tuesday evening in Karachi, Naqvi expressed the hope that “all eight teams” will come to Pakistan for the event, though he was not drawn into specifics about India’s position. The Champions Trophy is the first ICC event Pakistan will be hosting since the 1996 World Cup, when they were joint hosts with India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan was due to stage the event in 2008, but it was postponed and then relocated to South Africa because of the security situation in Pakistan at the time. Pakistan also lost out on co-hosting duties for the 2011 ODI World Cup, with the 2009 terror attacks on the Sri Lanka team meaning no international cricket in the country for the next six years.Since the return of international cricket to Pakistan in 2015, however, every single team involved in the Champions Trophy has toured and played in Pakistan, except India.Pakistan are the defending champions of the event, last held in 2017.
