Stuttgart confident of Nick Woltemade stay as director cites 'agreement' despite Bayern Munich interest

Stuttgart director confirms long-term deal still validBayern interest acknowledged, but no offer confirmedClub confident striker to remain next seasonFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Stuttgart sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth has publicly stated that the club expects Woltemade to stay for the upcoming season, despite reported interest from Bayern Munich. Speaking as Stuttgart resumed training, Wohlgemuth cited a long-term agreement made with the striker nearly 18 months ago and insisted it remains valid. While Bayern have formally expressed interest, their rivals consider Woltemade part of their squad for 2025-26.

The 23-year-old German midfielder, joined Stuttgart on a free transfer from Werder Bremen last summer and has quickly become a key figure under Sebastian Hoeness. He played a key role in Germany’s run to the final of the European Under 21 Championship earlier this summer, and his technical ability, size, and link-up play have drawn comparisons to top Bundesliga forwards. With a contract running until June 2028, Stuttgart view him as central to their long-term plans. Bayern, on the other hand, are actively pursuing new attacking options and are believed to also have already reached a personal agreement with the player. For Stuttgart, retaining Woltemade is as much about sporting ambition as it is about maintaining squad identity.

WHAT STUTTGART SAID

Despite the rumours, Wohlgemuth was clear in his stance, pointing to the existing contractual agreement between the player and the club. He told local media: "We made a long-term agreement with Nick almost a year and a half ago, and it's still valid. And that's why we assume that Nick will continue to play football with us next season and be able to show his qualities with us."

When pressed about whether the Bundesliga champions had submitted a formal offer for the 23-year-old striker, he chose not to reveal any details regarding negotiations between clubs, saying: "If any talks take place at all, that's a matter between the two clubs."

Woltemade is due to return from his extended holiday on July 28, with Stuttgart scheduled to begin pre-season shortly after. Despite external interest, for coach Hoeness the young German starlet is a key figure in his project. Stuttgart remain firm that the striker is not for sale, but Bayern’s next move could yet test that resolve as the Bundesliga giants seek to bolster their attack.

Renshaw negotiates Richardson threat before rain intervenes

Matt Renshaw’s search for a pivotal innings in his quest for a Test opening berth was undermined by persistent rain at the Gabba against Western Australia.Renshaw was unbeaten at lunch on 37 with opening partner Joe Burns 19 not out, but that was as far as they got on day one of the Sheffield Shield clash. The visitors won the toss and bowled. Renshaw was confronted with overcast skies, a pitch with a green tinge and a quality pace attack. It was just the test the Australian selectors would have wanted for Renshaw and he started his innings with aplomb. It was tough early with pace bowler Jhye Richardson finding his groove on return from a dislocated shoulder.Cameron Green, who is looking to push for a return to the Test side, sent down four overs for five runs.Renshaw left the ball well, rotated the strike nicely with Burns and played one sumptuous pull shot through midwicket to the boundary off Liam Haskett. He had the demeanour of a man prepared to settle in for a long innings. The 27-year-old is vying with Western Australia’s Cameron Bancroft and Victoria’s Marcus Harris to replace David Warner at the top of Australia’s order for the opening Test against the West Indies in January. Warner will retire after the third and final Test against Pakistan in Sydney.Renshaw will not be hanging his hat on a gritty 30-odd and with the forecast improved for the final three days of the Shield match he has the opportunity to post a big century. The three Shield games in progress that stated on Tuesday are the last of the calendar year but Renshaw, Harris and Bancroft will all get another key opportunity to impress Australian selectors next week when they represent the Prime Minister’s XI against Pakistan in Canberra.

Hope reveals Dhoni inspiration after finishing chase in style

How MS Dhoni’s words ‘stuck with’ Shai Hope

Shai Hope sealed a dramatic victory for his West Indies side over England with three sixes in four balls off Sam Curran in Antigua on Sunday, then called upon his players to back up their performances next week as they look to clinch a series win.Hope’s unbeaten 109 off 83 balls was his 16th ODI century and the fastest of his career. He brought it up with a flurry of sixes to take West Indies over the line, belting a Curran full toss over wide long-on, pulling a shorter ball over deep midwicket to bring up three figures and repeating the shot to complete a four-wicket win with seven balls to spare.”A very, very famous person, MS Dhoni – we had a chat a while ago, and he was saying, ‘You always have a lot more time than you think,'” Hope said at the post-match presentation. “That’s one thing that has stuck with me throughout the years I’ve been playing ODI cricket.Related

Speaking to CWI’s in-house channels, he added: “The dimensions of the field and then the wind factor there, I thought the best thing to do was to target that particular over. We knew it was a challenge to score from the other end, especially going against the breeze… regardless of what happened, I was going to try and take down that second-to-last over to give us the best chance of winning the game.”After the second [six of the 49th over], I knew we pretty much had the game in the balance. If we had that over to finish the game, I always try to finish the game with one over to spare if I can. I don’t want to leave it to anyone else, so the aim was to finish off at the back end.”Hope took over as West Indies’ full-time ODI captain earlier this year and while he oversaw an unsuccessful attempt at World Cup qualification in Zimbabwe, he has thrived with the bat since taking on the role. He has moved down to No. 4 after spending much of his career opening, and there has been a notable improvement in both his average and strike rate compared to his overall record. He also became the 11th West Indies batter to reach 5000 runs in men’s ODIs, during what was his 114th innings in the format. Hope was the joint-third-fastest batter of any nationality to reach the landmark, behind Babar Azam (97) and Hashim Amla (101) and level with Viv Richards and Virat Kohli.”It was in a winning cause, and that’s all I play for,” he said. “The stats will come as a bypass [sic] but my aim and my thing is to win games… It feels good, man. It contributed to a win, so I’m just happy that the guys got over the line.”Hope also hailed the contribution of Romario Shepherd, who made 48 off 28 balls during an 89-run stand for the sixth wicket. “He was amazing,” Hope said. “He’s one of those guys you can depend on and he’s continued to show his worth at this level… we’re starting the series on a high and the aim is to repeat this in the second game [on Wednesday].”West Indies’ run chase – their second-highest in men’s ODIs – was set up by Alick Athanaze and Brandon King’s 104-run opening stand. “They’re both quality players,” Hope said. “Again, it’s about how you can continue from this position. You want some consistency, not just a one-off to show the world you can do something.”Whatever is on the board, we have to chase it. If you want to win games, we can’t only win games when we’re bowling teams out for 160 or 150: we’ve got to win from any position. That’s the belief that we need to have in the dressing room. I’m going to be pushing that regardless of what’s going on.”

Bayern Munich have officially approached RB Leipzig over a possible deal for Simons, according to The Athletic. Though talks have not yet begun, Bayern are weighing their next move following setbacks in the transfer market.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Simons is seen as a versatile solution after Bayern Munich failed to land Wirtz or Williams, who were the Bavarians' top targets this summer. With Jamal Musiala injured and Leroy Sane and Mathys Tel having left the club, Bayern's attacking depth has thinned. The Dutchman could fill multiple roles in Vincent Kompany's system for the 2025/26 campaign.

Injuries limited Simons' playing time last season, but he still recorded 11 goals and eight assists. Across two years in Germany, he has racked up 44 goal contributions in 76 games.

    WHAT NEXT FOR BAYERN?

Bayern are expected to open formal negotiations with Leipzig in the coming days. With the player eager to leave, Bayern could try to strike a deal before pre-season kicks off. Leipzig, however, may demand a fee close to or above the €50 million (£43m) they paid to Paris Saint-Germain in January.

England pick uncapped 20-year-old Shoaib Bashir in Test squad for India

Shoaib Bashir, the 20-year-old Somerset offspinner with 10 wickets in his first-class career, has been named in England’s 16-man squad to tour India for a five-match Test series in early 2024. He is one of three uncapped players included along with left-arm spinner Tom Hartley and fast bowler Gus Atkinson, who have both represented England in limited-overs cricket.England’s captain Ben Stokes, who underwent surgery on his left knee last month, is included in the squad as expected, though will not be fit to bowl. Ben Foakes is also recalled after he was dropped for the Ashes, while Jack Leach and Ollie Pope both return to the squad after back and shoulder injuries during the English summer.Related

  • England Lions to play three four-day matches against India A in Ahmedabad

  • Hartley in the right place as England opportunities beckon

Rehan Ahmed, who took seven wickets on Test debut in Karachi a year ago, is one of four specialist spin options alongside Leach, Hartley and Bashir. There are only four frontline seamers in the squad, with James Anderson and Ollie Robinson complemented by the pace of Atkinson and Mark Wood – meaning no place for Chris Woakes. But it is Bashir’s inclusion that stands out. He made his professional debut in June after signing a professional contract with Somerset and has played only six first-class matches, but was the outstanding spinner on England Lions’ recent training camp in the UAE, taking match figures of 6 for 42 in a three-day fixture against Afghanistan’s A team.Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, said that Bashir’s natural attributes, including a high release point, had encouraged the selectors to look beyond his modest first-class figures, and added that the upbeat environment fostered by Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes would help bring out the very best in his abilities.”I think we focus more on what style of cricket we want to play and what do we think is going to go out there and win,” Key said. “It’s about ‘what is someone’s upside?’ It’s very hard, especially for spinners in English cricket, to judge them on their numbers as such. You’re not going to expect your spinner to average 24 with the ball in county cricket, you’re trying to see something else and back their character.”You want to see how the ball comes out of their hand – you’re going more to the art of selection, rather than the science of selection – and you back that environment that Stokes and McCullum have created with all the other players, to get the best out of these people. With Stokesy’s captaincy in particular, your bet is often that he’ll be the one who can get something out of these players. You just want to create an environment where you think they can thrive, which is no mean feat when you’re talking about a Test tour of India.”Hartley has a modest first-class record for Lancashire, with 40 career wickets at 36.57. But England believe that he also possesses attributes – he is 6ft 4in, and regularly bowls at speeds of 60mph/97kph or more – which will make him well-suited to replicate the role that Axar Patel has performed in Indian conditions.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

With Stokes unlikely to bowl a ball – “we never had him down to be bowling in India,” Key said – England will have difficult decisions to make over the balance of their side, not least over the identity of their wicketkeeper. Key hinted at the end of the World Cup that Bairstow had been told to work on his fitness – “he needs to actually get himself into a position where he can go and take on an Indian Test” – but insisted that they have not made a call.”[It is a] decision to be made and it hasn’t been made yet,” Key said. “A bit like the Ashes, we will get to the point where we feel like we have to make that decision. A lot can happen between now and then. That will come down to Brendon [McCullum] and Ben balancing the side, all kind of things. It’s a different place to keep than England. That decision will be made nearer the time.”Along with Woakes, who hinted at his likely non-inclusion earlier this year, other notable omissions include Dan Lawrence, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks. Lawrence was the spare batter throughout the Ashes but has been squeezed out of the squad, while Dawson and Jacks both have contracts to play in South Africa’s SA20, which clashes directly with the tour.Liam Livingstone, who made his Test debut in Pakistan a year ago, was not included and will instead play franchise cricket, while Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts and Josh Tongue – who picked up an injury on the Lions’ training camp in the UAE last month – are among the seamers on the periphery.England’s squad will travel to the UAE for a preparatory camp in mid-January and will arrive in India shortly before the first Test in Hyderabad on January 25. An England Lions squad, which is yet to be named, will also travel to India to shadow the main tour.England Test squad: Rehan Ahmed, James Anderson, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ben Foakes, Tom Hartley, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Ben Stokes (captain), Mark Wood

Jack Edwards shines but rain wrecks Sydney Sixers' chance at full points

No resultSydney Sixers were denied a BBL win over cross-town rivals Sydney Thunder in dramatic fashion, after rain washed out the match at the Sydney Showground. With five overs needed to constitute a match, Sixers were 34 for 1 after four overs in pursuit of 152 for victory when persistent rain stopped play and did not let up in time for players to return.Sixers would only have needed to be on 33 at the end of the fifth over to win under the Duckworth Lewis Stern system, provided they did not lose another wicket. The decision prompted Sixers captain Moises Henriques to walk on to the ground with his bat in hand and helmet on in frustration, seemingly arguing that play should not have been stopped.”It started raining obviously, but just with one over to go, the position we’re in, obviously we wanted to compete the over to constitute a match,” Sixers batter James Vince said.”I can understand in their position why they’re obviously [keen to] get off, but you know it just started raining. It would have been nice if we could just get the six balls down and have a result in the match.”Adding to Sixers’ frustrations was the fact that Thunder were one over behind on the over rate, according to the ground’s clock. The stoppage came after Thunder captain Chris Green had been in discussions with umpire Greg Davidson between overs, before players were taken off.Vince quipped that it was “borderline intimidation” in a reference to Tom Curran’s recent ban for defying an umpire’s direction.Thunder batter Alex Ross admitted there had been some gamesmanship.”It was a little bit of gamesmanship,” said Ross, who top-scored for his side with 44 off 39 balls. “But we did see in the end it came down hard enough to be off, so I think the right decision was made.”The result keeps Sixers in third spot on the BBL ladder, while Thunder are stuck in second-to-last on points with one win from their opening five games.Earlier, Sixers allrounder Jack Edwards produced the best bowling figures of his BBL career to keep Thunder to 151 for 7.Edwards bowled superbly and took the key wickets of Alex Hales (26) and Daniel Sams (30) in figures of 3 for 24.It came as Thunder stumbled to 53 for 4 in the eighth over, before Sams and Ross helped bat the hosts towards a somewhat competitive score. But still, the innings belonged to 23-year-old Edwards with the ball. One of the few bright lights of New South Wales’ domestic season, Edwards stood tall on Saturday night. After Hales threatened to go large with a massive six over the leg side off Sean Abbott, Edwards had him caught in the deep in the next over. And when Ross and Sams looked as if they were setting up for a big finish, Edwards was the man to remove the latter at long-off.He also accounted for Nathan McAndrew courtesy a neat Jordan Silk boundary catch, in a superb 18th over that went for only three runs.
