Teenager Teague Wyllie became the youngest player since Ricky Ponting to post a Sheffield Shield century, with his heroics putting Western Australia in the box seat against New South Wales at the WACA Ground.WA were bowled out for 258 in the final act of day two, giving them a lead of 78 after NSW were rolled for 180 on day one.Wyllie was the hero of the day, cracking 15 boundaries on the way to posting 104 off 204 balls. The 18-year-old was playing just his third first-class match and showed maturity beyond his years to guide WA out of early trouble. At 18 years and 163 days, Wyllie was the youngest player to reach triple figures in Shield cricket since Ponting, who was 18 years and 40 days when he notched his maiden ton in the competition. And it appears WA have found another diamond in the rough in the form of 21-year-old debutant Sam Fanning.Related

Fanning scored 32 runs off 161 balls at a pain-staking strike rate of 19.88 to help quell the NSW attack on a bowler-friendly wicket. Tailender Matt Kelly then posted an unbeaten 47 off 86 balls to ram home WA’s advantage.NSW debutant Ben Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers, with his early onslaught leaving WA in trouble at 3 for 39. They were still in strife at 6 for 100 before Wyllie, Joel Paris (25) and Kelly buckled down.WA started the day at 2 for 18 and Hilton Cartwright was the first to fall after being given out lbw to Jack Edwards. Although the ball struck Cartwright on the back leg it looked as though it was going to sail over the stumps. But WA received a couple of lucky breaks just before lunch. Wyllie survived a confident lbw shout from quick bowler Liam Hatcher. And next over Fanning was lucky to be given not out after being struck on the pads by spinner Nathan Lyon.Fanning’s strike rate of 19.55 at the lunch break didn’t make for pretty reading. But his grit on a tricky wicket proved crucial in steadying the ship. Wyllie’s determination also proved vital, especially once Fanning departed.Dwarshuis left WA reeling with two quick wickets late on Monday, and he returned to take the key scalps of Josh Philippe and Aaron Hardie shortly before tea on Tuesday. But Wyllie refused to give in and he gained in confidence the longer his innings went. He departed late in the day when he edged Chris Tremain to slip.  By then, WA already had a handy first-innings lead that could prove crucial in the final result.

Patterson edges past Bradman on rain-interrupted opening day

It was slow going with the bat in Wollongong while South Australia managed one breakthrough

AAP31-Oct-2022Kurtis Patterson edged past Don Bradman in the New South Wales record books after making it to stumps on day one of the weather-affected Sheffield Shield match against South Australia in Wollongong.Rain stopped play for almost three-and-a-half hours in the middle of the day, before bad light forced another stoppage only seven overs after the resumption.”The game’s probably sitting pretty fifty-fifty at the moment,” South Australia spinner Ben Manenti said. “They haven’t gotten away from us but they haven’t lost many wickets.”Soon before the lunch break, Patterson surpassed Bradman to become the 19th-highest run-scorer for NSW in Sheffield Shield history. The 29-year-old Patterson now has 4656 runs for NSW, while Bradman made 4633.Only Moises Henriques (14th) sits higher than Patterson amongst the current crop. Bradman averaged 107.74 from his 31 Shield matches for NSW before his move to South Australia in 1934, while Patterson is averaging 37.07 from 76 appearances. The majority of play at North Dalton Park took place in the morning session, which failed to reach any great heights.Hughes was dropped by Nathan McAndrew at short leg early in his innings, while Manenti secured the only breakthrough of the session when he dismissed Blake Nikitaras for 32. Nikitaras departed when he chipped Manenti to mid-on, where he was caught by Jordan Buckingham.”It was like he was batting on a different surface from me,” Hughes said. “It’s quite a slow wicket but it’s quite flat and the outfield’s slow.  There’s going to be a bit of grinding to do but hopefully we can do that tomorrow.”NSW and South Australia are in the bottom two spots on the Shield ladder with a draw and a loss to their names.

Tottenham hold direct talks with £55m star as Bayern give up on keeping him

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly held direct talks with another Bayern Munich star recently – following their January loan deal for his Bavarian teammate Mathys Tel – and it is believed Vincent Kompany’s side are resigned to losing him this summer.

Mathys Tel impresses for Tottenham after Bayern Munich switch

In what was one of the most dramatic winter window transfer stories, Tel pulled a full U-turn on his decision to join Spurs after originally snubbing the club’s advances.

An update has emerged on the 59-year-old’s future.

Chairman Daniel Levy personally flew to Munich for sit-down talks with the 19-year-old, who initially rejected the Lilywhites and their board member’s offer to join Spurs before deadline day (Florian Plettenberg).

However, while Levy flew home empty-handed, it was under-fire Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou who apparently played a major role in helping to convince the teenager to make a move to north London.

“Daniel Levy flew to Munich last week because Johan Lange feared that his meeting and presentation with Mathys Tel didn’t have the desired impact,” said L’Equipe reporter Loic Tanzi.

“After meeting with Levy, Tel communicated that he wasn’t going to join Spurs. It was as much about showing that he wouldn’t be forced into something by Bayern as it was about not being convinced by Spurs. Sunday evening, Ange Postecoglou spoke with Tel over the phone. Postecoglou put forward how he planed to use Tel, expressed how much he valued Tel’s versatility and speed, and expressed that he thought Tel could torment Premier League defences with his qualities.”

Tel pen to paper on a temporary N17 switch, which includes an option to buy for in and around £50 million, and he’s since impressed on-lookers with his enthusiasm in an otherwise dismally out-of-form side.

Leroy Sane for Bayern Munich

The Frenchman bagged his first goal for Tottenham in a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the FA Cup, and according to CaughtOffside, Tel could be joined at Hotspur Way by his Bayern colleague Leroy Sané.

Tottenham hold direct talks with Leroy Sané as Bayern stance revealed

The German, who cost Kompany’s side around £55 million to sign from Man City in 2020, is set to be a free agent at the end of this season.

Bayern, despite their best efforts to tie him down with fresh terms, have “all but given up” on trying to keep the 29-year-old – giving Spurs a golden opportunity to snap him up at zero cost.

Leroy Sane celebrates for Germany

CO write that Tottenham have held recent talks with Sane, and could hold a financial advantage over Barcelona in the race for his signature. The Lilywhites have apparently emerged as “serious contenders” for his signature, which bodes well for next term considering Sane’s obvious quality.

“Leroy is best player in the world out wide,” said Man City boss Pep Guardiola back in 2019. “I’d prefer to use him where he is strongest, he’s an incredible player.”

Agreement reached and medical booked as Newcastle close in on £9m+ sale

A “unique” Newcastle United player is now close to leaving the club in the January transfer window, with an agreement reached over his exit.

Newcastle transfer news

Magpies transfer rumours are refusing to go away as the current window nears its conclusion next Monday, with Semih Kilicosoy linked with a move to St James’ Park over the weekend. The 19-year-old Besiktas winger is a target this month, but it may depend on whether Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to keep him or not.

While Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande has been mentioned as an option to come in and boost Eddie Howe’s defensive options, Barcelona ace Eric Garcia is being looked at as an alternative, as Newcastle look to find a long-term partner for Sven Botman.

When it comes to January outgoings at St James’, Miguel Almiron has consistently been linked with a move away, with an agreement reportedly reached with MLS side Atlanta United.

That said, personal terms were yet to be agreed, which was acting as a potential stumbling block, but there has now been a fresh development in the saga.

Newcastle ace agrees January exit with medical booked

According to Monumental AM 1080 [via Sport Witness], an agreement has been reached to bring an end to Almiron’s Newcastle career. The 30-year-old will sign a four-year deal at Atlanta, with the transfer fee thought to be £9.6m. He will travel there at the end of the week to complete the transfer and undergo a medical.

Journalist Cesar Luis Merlo has also backed this up, saying the deal is “done”, with just a medical and an official announcement to come.

This ultimately feels like the right decision for everyone concerned, even though Howe has shown his love for Almiron in the past, saying:

“He’s (Almiron) a unique footballer. I don’t think there’s anyone better at doing what he does – all energy, all action. I’d like to see his physical stats today because I’m sure they’d be through the roof. The quality he showed with his finish was very reminiscent of some of the goals he scored last year. It’s a great return to form for Miggy – he’s such an important player for us.”

Almiron was struggling to get minutes with Newcastle this season, with Jacob Murphy often preferred on the right flank, and at 30, he isn’t getting any younger. He hasn’t registered a single goal contribution in nine Premier League appearances in 2024/25, highlighting his lack of influence and action.

The Paraguayan’s commitment and team ethic have always been impressive, but a lack of end product has too often been an issue, with the Magpies ace not possessing the elite quality in that area that Howe now needs moving forward.

'Keep that stuff away from me' – Real Salt Lake star Diego Luna opens up on how he manages transfer rumors amid recent success

Real Salt Lake midfielder Diego Luna spoke candidly about the challenges of managing his rapidly growing profile in American soccer. The 21-year-old was recently named MLS Young Player of the Year for his performances in the 2024 season, where he had 20 goal contributions. It has led to increased attention and speculation about his future, and Luna discussed his mental approach to handling transfer speculation, social media attention, and the pressures that accompany all that.

“Yeah for me, it’s all just talks and whatever. I always tell my agents and people around me that I don’t want to hear anything about what’s going on unless I have to make a decision,” Luna told . “Unless it’s something that it’s right there, at that moment and ok, we need to look in this deep. So, I kind of try to tell them to keep that stuff away from me because it’s all just talk and as you know there’s people that talk good, talk bad and it’s everywhere so I kinda like to stay away from that.”

“And yeah, I think for me it’s just naturally just chilling, playing soccer and you know, working hard providing for my family and you know whatever comes from that and whatever comes from performing, we’ll talk about it.”

AdvertisementWHAT DIEGO LUNA SAID

The 21-year-old also opened up about how hard it was to step into a locker room at the age of 17 alongside grown men and professional footballers when he first broke out.

“Yeah, I think that was a whole other journey on itself,” Luna revealed on his first professional move to El Paso Locomotive. “Moving away to another place where you don’t know anybody, and this time it’s the real deal, right? You’re getting paid to do this, to perform and being a 17-year-old stepping into a locker filled with grown men, it was hard.

“But it took a lot of confidence at the right time to understand that I’m meant to be there and to perform, and of course, the trust in the coach, at the time Mark Lowry, who gave me the opportunity to perform.”

Luna further expanded on his pathway into professional football and admitted that while it wasn’t the traditional route, it worked for him.

“You know, I think each player has their own pathway, I can really say that it’s better one way or the other but for me, it was the pathway that I took, that I felt was right for me,” Luna mentioned. “I think I made sacrifices and the decisions that I think when I needed to be challenged is when I took that next step.

“I didn’t like to be comfortable and not grow and not learn about the game or myself or be challenged, and each time I was [comfortable], I made that leap. So for me it was, you know it’s cool to say it’s not the original pathway that people have in mind, but I’m proud to say that I made it this way.”

Outside of club football, Luna has also been regularly appearing for the USMNT and opened up about the 2026 World Cup and what it means for the US and Mexico.

“I think for me right now it’s, you know, just besides me playing and the soccer part, it’s just amazing to have the World Cup here, in the USA and Mexico, it’s crazy. So, besides all that, and now putting in the aspect that I am having the opportunity to perform and be in that circle of players that could be chosen for this, so I think that’s very exciting. And that just gives me another thing and motivation to work for and work harder now than ever to be able to be on that roster,” Luna added.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 21-year-old Real Salt Lake star enjoyed a career-high campaign in the 2024 season for Real Salt Lake as he contributed to 20 goals across all competitions with 16 of those coming in the MLS. Things haven’t quite gone Luna’s way this term as he’s only managed three goal contributions in eight appearances, but the attacker’s form is picking up as he scored a brace in the club’s win over LA Galaxy a few weeks ago.

Ben Stokes guides nervy England through to World Cup semi-finals

Sri Lanka take chase down to final over as England middle order unravels after fast start

England are through to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, knocking Australia out in the process, thanks to a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka. It was an anxiety-riddled chase in the final match in Group 1, despite a target of 142 looking well within reach after openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales posted 75 for the first wicket inside eight overs. But a series of unforced errors saw six wickets fall in the space of 65 deliveries, for the addition of just 54. The trio of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva and Lahiru Kumara split those dismissals evenly between them and for a moment an upset looked well and truly on the cards. But Ben Stokes – as ever – saw England over the line with 42 from 36 that only contained two fours but constantly worked the scoreboard and Sri Lanka’s outfielders before Chris Woakes’ cut for four confirmed victory with two balls left. Stokes came in at No. 3 after Dawid Malan injured his groin fielding and showed typical poise under immense pressure. It was a far closer than it should have been, England having fought back strongly to limit Sri Lanka to a modest total after opener Pathum Nissanka (67 off 45) got them off to a flyer. For Australia, now officially done as defending champions, they will wonder what might have been having relinquished the opportunity to surpass England’s net run rate with their own modest win over Afghanistan on Friday. But for Nissanka’s blitz, which had Sri Lanka 65 for 1 after seven overs, there was little around him as England’s collective attack served up cutters and slower deliveries that were responding well to a worn surface at the SCG. Adil Rashid’s 1 for 16 from his four overs led the retort, though Mark Wood collected the more eye-catching figures of 3 for 26, two of them coming in the 20th over, which also featured a run out, as Sri Lanka crept to 141 for 8 – the lowest total posted first at this ground in the competition. England also became the first to win at the SCG when chasing.Buttler’s charges now head to Adelaide for their semi-final. They will play whoever finishes first in Group 2, which culminates on Sunday.Stokes. Again
Make no mistake, there was always going to be a space for Stokes, even if the pre-tournament conversations over whether he is in England’s best T20 team were merited. In many ways, it is his bowling that has been as close to a revelation as you can get for a multifaceted cricketer admired the world over, and yet again he opened up, finishing with 1 for 24 from three overs. Batting, however, was where the real question remained and it took until England were in the doldrums in Sydney to truly appreciate how valuable he is.Yes, his best spot is as an opener, but the way he gauged the conditions around him – both the tangible challenge of the pitch and intangible stress of having to be the saviour once more – was a reminder of his unparalleled worth to England. He only hit two fours, picking up the majority of his runs with his feet, as that problematic left knee worked more overtime. He is still yet to register a fifty in T20Is, and this score was only the third time he has passed 40 in 35 innings, not that he or his team-mates will care.If Malan’s injury is as feared, a batting replacement will have to be drafted in, and there is no guarantee Stokes will reprise his first-drop role in the semi-final. Whatever position he comes in at, there can be no doubt England’s best XI is one with him in it.Rashid dulls with class
Four games played, 16 overs bowled and, finally, a wicket. It has been a peculiar tournament for Rashid, one which has seen the legspinner operate as a dampener rather than a disruptor. Even though the former is a role of immense value in this format, the fear was the shoulder injury that has limited his usual zip off the pitch was cutting into his incisiveness. Of course, the reality may be closer to the fact batters are more watchful against him, willing to play his overs out before making hay at the other end. Here, he wedded both sides: stopping Sri Lanka in their tracks – he did not concede a boundary in his four overs – and dismissing Nissanka. Had he failed at either task, things would have ended very differently. As it happens, he now has 90 T20I wickets – the joint most for an Englishman, level with Chris Jordan.Change of pace
In a tournament where those topping the speed gun have stolen the headlines, here was a fixture that rewarded shifting down a few gears. The spinners were always likely to shine on this used pitch, but the quicks got in on the act with variations of their own. England’s attack sussed this halfway through and by the halfway stage, pace-off deliveries were going at 4.87 runs per over, while pace-on checked in at 8.46. The most notable element of this in the second innings came in the 18th over, when Sri Lanka’s own speedster Lahiru Kumara bowled six balls – almost entirely reserved and into the pitch – that yielded just two runs and the wicket of Sam Curran, leaving England needing over a run a ball for the last two overs.

Richmond council, Richmond borough is more concerned about that. I just think in terms of impact on local residents, numbers of fans and so on they’re a little bit more sensitive. West Brom struck gold on amazing star who could be Mowbray’s next Armstrong

Tony Mowbray will hope all of the last-minute business that took place at West Bromwich Albion stands his promotion-chasing side in good stead to try and return to the Premier League.

The Baggies would end up clinching the signature of Randers FC star Tammer Bany on deadline day to bolster the forward positions but did unfortunately lose main goalkeeper Alex Palmer at the death to Ipswich Town in a £5m switch.

The Championship promotion hopefuls were also left to wait with bated breath to see if another late move was going to be signed off in time, with the attacking star in question previously working under Mowbray’s wing at Blackburn Rovers.

Armstrong's move to West Brom

The last-gasp attacking signing in question here is Adam Armstrong, with a development at the 11th hour allowing the Baggies to swoop in to land the potent EFL striker on a loan basis.

The deal was worryingly tight to the 11pm cut-off, leaving the second-tier side firmly in the dark over what the final outcome was going to be, but those anxieties were thankfully quelled with the below announcement.

West Brom have really sent out a statement to the rest of the division about how seriously they’re taking the promotion fight with this late pick-up, considering Armstrong netted an unbelievable 24 strikes last season in the second tier on the way to Southampton leaping up to the Premier League.

Wanted by Leeds United too on deadline day, the £13m-rated attacker might well have scouted out the Hawthorns as his next destination so he could link back up with his former Riversiders boss in Mowbray, with Armstrong netting all 64 of his strikes at Ewood Park whilst the 61-year-old was positioned at the helm.

Coincidentally, it was the now Baggies boss that sold Armstrong, with the rampant striker at the time setting Southampton back a cool £15m after initially costing Rovers just £1.75m.

Now back at the Hawthorns, who could be Mowbray’s next big slice of profit?

Tony Mowbray's next big star

Amazingly, Isaac Price has already seen his value skyrocket at the West Midlands club despite only joining late last month.

Indeed, the ex-Standard Liege midfielder would leave Belgium behind for a fee around the £2.5m mark, but now finds his value standing at a far heftier £14m according to the CIES Football Observatory. That’s a similar rise to the aforementioned Armstrong.

In all fairness, the Northern Ireland international has begun to show flashes of his excellence in his new West Brom colours to justify this fresh bumper price-tag, with a 29-minute cameo against Portsmouth on his debut seeing him misplace just three passes from 32 touches of the ball.

Off the back of spraying the ball about with such ease, Mowbray has already labelled Price as a “very talented” asset in the Baggies camp, with one of Price’s former Everton teammates in Asmir Begovic also lauding the 21-year-old as “outstanding” when he was still on the books at Goodison Park.

After all, his adaptability to play in a whole host of different positions back in England – as can be seen glancing at the table above – means he could finally live up to the early hype he received at the Toffees and remain an asset worthy of a high £14m value.

The 21-year-old certainly has the potential to grow into a top performer for the Baggies over the years to come and if all goes to plan, he could be the current manager’s next big sale.
