Celtic: Ryan Christie linked with Leicester

Ryan Christie has been linked with a move to English FA Cup winners Leicester City, as reported by the Daily Mail.

The Lowdown: Celtic face an exodus ahead of 2021/22

Moving into 2021/22, Celtic could lose multiple first team regulars as they look to mount a Premiership title bid to dethrone their Glasgow rivals at the first attempt.

Odsonne Edouard has been subject of a transfer wrangle this summer as the Foxes vie to secure his services amid further interest from West Ham United and Aston Villa in recent weeks.

However, there may be someone else leaving Parkhead to link up with former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers at the King Power Stadium following latest developments.

The Latest: Rodgers eyeing Christie reunion; Ligue 1 duo also keen

Leicester City are said to be interested in a swoop for Christie in this window as rumours surrounding his future intensify [Daily Mail].

Nice and Monaco are also rumoured to be keen on obtaining his signature, as his contract is due to expire mid-season next January [Daily Record].

The Scotland international’s unusual contractual circumstances make him an attractive option for prospective bidders. Reported to be available for just £1m, Celtic are looking to sell him on for any sort of fee rather than lose him for nothing in 2022 [Sunday Post].

The Verdict: Losing Christie for a knockdown fee would be bitterly disappointing

Losing the Inverness-born midfielder for such a small sum would undoubtedly come as a bitter blow to Celtic. Nice had an £8m offer knocked back for Christie in January, demonstrating a lack of awareness from the Parkhead hierarchy regarding his diminishing value.

In 2020/21, the 26-year-old enjoyed a productive campaign for the Celts, registering 22 goal contributions from 46 games with seven goals and 15 assists [Transfermarkt]. He also made the WhoScored? Scottish Premiership Team of the Season last term, averaging a score of 7.33/10 across the campaign [67 Hail Hail].

Whether he eventually reunites with his former boss Rodgers or tries his luck abroad in the sunnier climes of Ligue 1 in France, he would offer a substantial attacking threat, as illustrated by his returns from last season.

Once labelled as “absolutely brilliant” by former Hoops manager Neil Lennon [Daily Record], there is no reason why Christie cannot take his game to the next level if he moves on to pastures new.

In other news, Celtic have been linked with a Brazilian centre-back.

Gers’ Morelos contracts coronavirus

Glasgow Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos has tested positive for coronavirus as he prepares for two World Cup qualifiers with Colombia.

The Lowdown: Morelos away on international duty

With the club season now over, Rangers players have departed to all corners of the globe as they aim to help their relative international teams over the summer.

Morelos had been selected to represent his country against Peru and Argentina in World Cup qualifiers ahead of the Copa America.

The Latest: Positive virus test

However, the 24-year-old has been dealt a significant blow after testing positive for the virus (via Glasgow Times).

He is now self-isolating as a result and will therefore miss both of his national team’s upcoming clashes, having already joined up with the squad as they seek to atone for a poor start in the CONMEBOL qualifying section.

The Verdict: A rest

On the face of it, this will be terrible news for Morelos. Having travelled to South America, he will have been eager to represent his country whenever he can. He will now miss the two games, and his participation in the Copa America could therefore be under threat.

However, this has been another gruelling season for the £10.8m-valued star (Transfermarkt). He made 41 appearances in all competitions, scoring 17 goals (Transfermarkt) as he helped his side win the Premiership and playing a regular role as the season progressed. While he may not think it himself now, a small rest could be the best thing for him in terms of his club involvement over the coming months.

In other news, some Rangers fans don’t want the club to sign this striker.

Liverpool should sell Harry Wilson

Liverpool have been handed a potentially huge boost in their pursuit of Leeds United winger Raphinha as the upcoming transfer window approaches.

What’s the story?

According to The Mirror (as reported by SportsMole), Jurgen Klopp’s charges have moved ahead of their rivals in the race for the Brazilian winger, as Leeds are eager to sign Harry Wilson.

The Wales international has impressed throughout a series of loan spells away from Anfield and could be used as a makeweight to bring Raphinha to Merseyside.

Klopp must axe Wilson

After the Euros, Wilson wil return to his parent club following an impressive stint with Cardiff City, scoring seven goals and providing 12 assists in 37 Championship appearances.

However, the £60,000-per-week starlet is not thought to be in Klopp’s first-team plans for the future and as such, he will be allowed to depart his boyhood club this summer.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have been linked with a move for Leeds’ Raphinha after his magnificent maiden Premier League campaign.

The 24-year-old received many plaudits following his arrival from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes 12 months ago, scoring and assisting a combined 15 goals in 30 top-flight matches.

Klopp is hoping to add extra firepower to his attacking options due to the underwhelming performance of several of his forward players throughout last season.

Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino had uncharacteristically poor campaigns, while Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi once again failed to step up to the mark.

Their lack of punch in the final third contributed to Liverpool’s rather disappointing third-place finish, and Klopp is attempting to ensure those issues don’t plague his side once again.

While Wilson has shone in England’s second-tier, he has shown nothing to suggest that he possesses the required quality to guide the Reds back to the summit of English and European football.

Raphinha, on the other hand, may have exactly that. The South American star went from strength to strength in 2020/21 as he slowly adapted to the demands of the Premier League.

At Anfield, he would be surrounded by a calibre far higher than he is currently playing alongside, meaning a natural jump in his output is likely to occur.

Klopp has shown admirable loyalty throughout his managerial career, but the German tactician must brutally axe Wilson over the coming months in order to secure what could be a crucial addition to his stuttering Liverpool side.

LFC fans criticise Fabinho’s performance

A number of Liverpool supporters were left frustrated with Fabinho’s performance against Burnley on Wednesday, despite a vital win for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

The Reds faced a must-win game at Turf Moor on Wednesday evening, facing a Clarets side with nothing left to play for this season.

Liverpool didn’t have it all their own way, however, with the hosts giving it their all and causing problems for a makeshift defence.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

Despite that, the defending Premier League champions got the job done in professional fashion, securing a crucial 3-0 victory in the end.

Roberto Firmino, Nathaniel Phillips and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got the goals and Liverpool now just have to beat Crystal Palace on Sunday to all but certainly secure a top-four finish.

Someone who was well below his best at Turf Moor was Fabinho, with the Brazilian curiously sloppy by his high standards – he won just two of his eight duels, per Sofascore, a mere 25 per cent win rate.

West Ham fans erupt as club eye Daka

According to Goal, via West Ham Central, the Hammers are interested in Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka – with many supporters erupting as GSB allegedly eye the ‘perfect signing’.

Daka has attracted much attention for his exploits in Austria, drawing comparisons with Premier League legend Thierry Henry, and it’s not hard to see why judging by his phenomenal goal record over the 2020/2021 season.

Indeed, the Zambian star bagged a truly head-turning 34 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances in all competitions for Salzburg (Transfermarkt) – with West Ham now apparently one of the clubs interested.

Not much is mentioned in regards to a price tag or any formal enquiry, but Goal claim that the Irons are certainly taking note of the 22-year-old.

Palace given Howe boost

It appears that Crystal Palace have settled on replacing Roy Hodgson at the end of the campaign.

The 73-year-old’s contract expires in just a couple of month’s time, with replacements already being talked up. Sean Dyche and Valerien Ismael have already been linked with a switch to Selhurst Park, whilst Eddie Howe is also reportedly on the Eagles’ list of potential managers.

The former Bournemouth boss also has suitors at Celtic but Palace have been handed a huge advantage in the race for his signature.

According to Give Me Sport, his representatives have convinced him that he is still able to earn a job in the Premier League,  giving the Eagles a huge boost in their prospects of appointing Howe as Hodgson’s successor, a role he would surely be able to fulfil.

Having got Bournemouth promoted to the Premier League, he led the Cherries to 16th , 9th, 12th and 14th placed finishes before the club eventually suffered relegation back to the Championship.

Despite that demotion, Howe has still been praised. Former Bournemouth striker Brett Pitman labelled him as “special” following his work at the Vitality Stadium.

Whilst Hodgson can boast a better win percentage in recent years, racking up 33% compared to Howe’s 29% in the Premier League, the latter would certainly bring fresh ideas to Selhurst Park with Palace having themselves not managed to finish in the top-half of the table during Hodgson’s tenure.

Another benefit of Palace’s appointment of Howe would also be the ease at which a deal could potentially be done.

Currently out of work, Steve Parish would not have to fork out any compensation in which to bring him to Selhurst Park. That would certainly not be the case with the aforementioned reported targets Dyche and Ismael, who are still currently employed by Burnley and Barnsely, respectively.

So, with Howe having seemingly been encouraged to wait for a Premier League role, Palace really have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of the former Bournemouth man.

Spurs legend sends warning to Mason

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts has warned Ryan Mason and Chris Powell that they “can’t have mates” in the Spurs squad, and has told Football FanCast that he hopes the club return to their ethos of attacking football.

Mason has been placed in charge of the first-team on an interim basis and is being assisted by Powell.

That decision came on the heels of Jose Mourinho being sacked last Monday.

Roberts is hopeful that the two can help return Spurs to their attacking roots, especially given that he believes that in recent weeks, the side have been appalling.

Indeed, Spurs have won just two of their last eight games, which includes the 3-0 humiliation at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb and a 1-0 Carabao Cup Final defeat to Manchester City, where they didn’t show too much attacking intent.

Roberts believes Mason and Powell will reassess the squad and pick those who deserve to play, while also hoping that the tactics change.

Speaking to FFC, he said: “I think Mason and Powell will have a massive, massive job on their hands now. You can’t have mates, you’ve got to pick the right players. I think every player now should be looked at differently.

“It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in the team, to be honest the team has played absolute garbage, we haven’t played well for a long, long time, and I’m just hoping that he takes the shackles off of them.”

Spurs eye 2011 target Sergio Aguero

Tottenham Hotspur are a potential destination for Premier League talisman Sergio Aguero this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Telegraph’s transfer guru Mike McGrath, who has claimed that the out-of-contract Man City star is eager to remain in England to prove himself away from the runaway league leaders.

And he’s even said to be willing to forgo Champions League football.

Both Spurs and local rivals Chelsea appear to be in the running to claim the 32-year-old forward.

Finally get Redknapp’s man?

Aguero, who has bagged 257 goals in the Premier League, made only his sixth start of the campaign at the weekend and has been heavily out-of-favour under Pep Guardiola following injury troubles.

It was announced at the end of March that the long-serving City poacher would leave the Etihad at the expiration of his current £230k-per-week contract, having originally joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

He could’ve joined Spurs back then, too as then-manager Harry Redknapp pursued his signature. It’s always been a case of ‘what might’ve been’ for the north Londoners but now they could finally get their hands on him and right their wrongs.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-this-weeks-april-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-and-more” title=”Read this week’s latest Spurs news, April transfer rumours and more!”]

In January 2011, Redknapp failed with a €45m (£38m) bid for the emerging Argentine sensation despite meeting his release clause, then within six months he was a City player and the rest was history.

Evidently, Spurs missed out on one of the greatest Premier League strikers, if not all-round players, of all-time as he has constantly delivered goals on the biggest stage, also leading the Citizens to four top-flight titles and one FA Cup.

“Aguero has conquered England. His numbers speak for themselves,” lauded Guardiola to ESPN (via Sports Illustrated). “Aguero is an extraordinary person, and we still have a month and a half to win more things and help him to score goals.”

It remains to be seen how that would’ve impacted Harry Kane’s rapid growth over the years but you can’t help but feel many were deprived of a mouthwatering partnership.

That’s something Levy can make amends for now.

Only three players have scored more goals in the Premier League than Aguero – all legends in their own right in Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel recently dubbed him “world-class” whilst talkSPORT pundit Jason Cundy claimed he was an “icon” in the Premier League and that he has been “unbelievable.”

Still valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, securing Aguero on a free transfer to play alongside or behind Kane would certainly be a masterstroke move from Daniel Levy.

He clearly has a lot to give and with that added chip on his shoulder, the 97-time Argentina international could continue to smash top-flight records and help steer Spurs back on track with their own aims and ambitions.

Villa must make big transfer call on Ross Barkley

Aston Villa must make a ruthless call on Ross Barkley amid claims West Ham are interested in signing him this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks claimed that Christian Purslow was the driving force behind doing a permanent deal for Barkley come the end of the season, despite Dean Smith himself being “unconvinced” over whether the 27-year-old is worth the money needed to sign him.

Now, TEAMtalk have suggested that Hammers boss David Moyes has added Barkley to his list of targets this summer, while Villa themselves have now indicated they will not be looking to sign him.

NSWE will be fuming

Given how Barkley’s campaign has really fizzled out after some promising early appearances for the club, it would be a major blunder from Villa to be looking to sign the £18m-rated ace permanently.

After scoring twice in his opening two Premier League games for the club, Barkley has scored just once since in the top-flight, while he still only has one assist to his name in the competition too.

Speaking after he was taken off yet again in the second half against Leicester last month, Sky Sports pundit Alex Scott slammed him for his display, saying: “For me it’s another missed opportunity for Ross Barkley to show up and demand, he’s been subbed off again and you can see in his face he’s not happy. But how many chances does a player need?

“You need to take it upon yourself. There’s only so many chances that he can be deserving. He’s missed another opportunity today.”

With reports initially claiming that Purslow was spearheading Villa’s permanent move for Barkley, the chief executive must now make a ruthless U-turn. NSWE certainly won’t be happy at forking out a shed-load of money for a player who’s barely performed for them this season.

Meanwhile, Villa are eyeing a move for this 6 foot 6 giant…

Saints fans react to Ings news

Southampton fans have been reacting to the news that Manchester City are interested in signing Danny Ings to potentially replace Sergio Aguero (Sky Sports).

Ings’ future with the Saints is up in the air. As it stands, his contract is set to run out at the end of next season (Transfermarkt) but, while Southampton have made it clear they would like to extend his deal (via The Daily Mail), the former Liverpool man has, as of yet, not put pen to paper on an agreement.

To avoid losing the striker for nothing, Southampton may well look to sell him in the summer, and the Citizens are said to be interested in signing him to replace the outgoing Aguero, who is set to leave the club on a free transfer this summer after 10 years at the Etihad Stadium.

Saints supporters have been reacting to the news and, surprisingly, it seems they would not be too fussed to see him depart despite the £19.8m-valued star (Transfermarkt) scoring 42 goals in 92 matches for them. They took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the Ings news below

“Good news, get rid and move on, ship out Redmond and djenepo too, both been under achieving at PL level, not sure they’ll achieve a regular squad number in the championship to be honest, that’s my opinion,”
