Barcelona’s chase of Adama Traore could indicate a major flaw in their system

According to an exclusive report coming from 90min, Barcelona are interested in recruiting Wolverhampton Wanderers’ breakthrough talent Adama Traore.

What’s the word, then?

The 23-year-old player has suddenly become one of the hottest prospects on the market, attracting attention from the Premier League giants such as Liverpool and Manchester City.

But his former club Barcelona are also on the prowl.

Wolves reportedly value Traore at £70m, as 90min have explained, and they would likely receive the full amount should the player truly be sold.

But a deal in January looks unlikely and if any of the aforementioned clubs really manage to seal it, it would probably come about at the end of the season.

With four goals and four assists in the Premier League already, it’s easy to see why Traore is liked by so many big teams.

But for the Catalans, it could indicate a recurring flaw in their overall policy.

A costly mistake

Traore was once a part of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy and now, years after letting him go, they could return for their prodigy, only this time, it would literally (not literally) cost them an arm and a leg.

There’s no doubting Traore’s appeal right now – as his stats and the interest from top teams have proven – but failing to groom their young talents properly and then splashing the cash once someone else does the job for them doesn’t really seem like a viable transfer policy for the Blaugrana.

And considering Traore wouldn’t be their first mistake of this nature, there’s reason to believe this is indeed a major flaw in their overall system.

Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…

A rather similar thing has happened to Dani Olmo – another La Masia outcast who’s on Barcelona’s radar and commanding a large transfer fee – and  also players like Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alcantara and Andre Onana – stars who were sold only for the Catalans to reignite their interest years after, realising the error of their ways.

Wolves have been an excellent place for Traore to thrive and develop and they are now reaping the rewards of their trust in the player – trust that Barcelona were lacking back in the day.

That mistake might cost them £70m or even more, while the English side can either cash in or try and keep the player around.

At this point, both options sound good for them and they hold all the cards.

Sunderland’s signing of Kyle Lafferty suggests Will Grigg’s time is running out

Sunderland may be on a current run of good form but there is a lot they need to do in the transfer window in order to turn their side into a promotion-winning team.

Phil Parkinson has identified the problems in his squad, one of which was to remove the bad influence of Aiden McGeady, but it appears that others could also be heading for the exit door, such as Marc McNulty.

The Reading loanee hasn’t hit the heights expected of him in front of goal so far, with just two league goals, but he isn’t alone in that underperformance, with Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg also contributing just four league goals between them in 2019/20.

For the latter, it is a severe disappointment considering the Black Cats paid £4m for him 12 months ago, not to mention he has twice scored the goals to help Wigan to promotion from the same division.

Due to the failures of the strikers at his disposal, Parkinson has wasted little time in diagnosing the issue, and brought in Kyle Lafferty in an attempt to rejuvenate an attack that has scored 35 goals in 24 league games – the third-lowest amount amongst teams in the top ten.

Perhaps more pertinent is the type of player the Northern Ireland international is. At 6 foot 4 tall he has built a career as a strong target man, winning 46% of his aerial duels in 2018/19, making him very similar to how Wyke performs for Sunderland, having averaged winning 5.3 aerial duels per game this campaign.

Wyke has started in every one of the Black Cats’ current six-game unbeaten run, and it seems Parkinson is fond of the way he plays, meaning a lone striker able to link play with two wingers could be his preferred style moving, a system that hasn’t worked with Grigg’s poaching instinct.

Added to that, Parkinson has also shown an interest in Gary Madine, another tall striker who is more similar to Wyke than Grigg, and that means the Black Cats boss may utilise the 28-year-old even less than he does currently.

Parkinson stated in November that Grigg is an important player for him, yet the striker has started just two league games since then, both of which Sunderland lost, which indicates he is unlikely to get back into the team anytime soon.

Salford and Swindon are both interested, too, with Alan Nixon suggesting a loan move could take place, and with the north-east outfit also monitoring Liam Boyce it could signal the end of the Northern Irishman’s time at the Stadium of Light – at least for a short while.

Spurs should sell Christian Eriksen ASAP amid Inter interest

Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a £10m bid from Inter Milan for Christian Eriksen, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s the word?

The Denmark international has a contract that expires at the end of the season but Inter are hopeful of signing the playmaker this month.

The Italian giants have already made an opening bid of £10m for the 27-year-old, per the report, though Spurs knocked it back.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Chairman Daniel Levy is said to want £17m instead, though Sky Italia, the Standard reports, states that Inter have returned with an offer of £12.8m.

Eriksen has already agreed to a four-and-a-half-year deal with the San Siro club.

No time to be haggling

This is not the right strategy for Spurs.

Eriksen is clearly on his way out – his substitution against Liverpool led to boos around the stadium and he waved to fans as he departed the pitch – and this is the club’s last chance to actually receive any sort of fee.

They do not have the ability to negotiate here.

For the sake of £7m, or potentially £2.8m, Spurs should be sending Eriksen on his way.

He is almost certain to leave this month; it is better to get it over with quickly.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans have debated a move for a megastar.

Spurs going cold on potential Willian Jose deal

Tottenham Hotspur are going cold on the prospect of signing Real Sociedad striker Willian Jose, per Marca via Sport Witness.

What’s the word?

Spurs have an interest in signing the forward this month, per sources, but it appears that their chase could be reaching its conclusion.

The club are said to have tabled a bid for the Brazilian forward, who has scored eight goals thus far this season.

However, Sociedad will have to pay a number of agents who are connected with Jose if he leaves the club and, as such, are not said to be willing to budge on his fee.

Spurs do have other options, per sources, and are also interested in AC Milan’s Krzysztof Piatek, while they are attempting to strike a deal for PSV Eindhoven forward Steven Bergwijn.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

Too much trouble

Spurs don’t have time to mess about here.

The transfer deadline is rapidly approaching and they need a striker.

Harry Kane, of course, is currently injured and could well miss the remainder of the season; manager Jose Mourinho has subsequently been forced to play Lucas Moura through the middle.

While there is interest in Bergwijn, sources have confirmed that a deal to sign him does not rule out the possibility of the club purchasing a recognised centre-forward.

Nevertheless, a deal for Jose is clearly dragging and with other options available – namely Piatek – Spurs are right to consider dropping out of the running to bring in the 28-year-old.

The clock, after all, is against them.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has issued a major update on a man who could leave Spurs this month.

Sheffield Wednesday fans laud Morgan Fox following Monday’s defeat

Sheffield Wednesday’s poor run of form in the Championship continued on Monday night as they suffered a fifth loss in six matches.

The Owls succumbed to late defeat at Wigan Athletic after a point was snatched from their grasp in the 90th minute.

Loan winger Jacob Murphy headed the visitors in front just after half an hour, but the Latics came from behind to steal all three points thanks to Kieffer Moore’s equaliser and Jamal Lowe’s well-timed headed winner.

Despite all the negativity on social media, fans did hand out praise to one member of Garry Monk’s squad… Morgan Fox.

The left-back was forced off in the 51st minute, and Wednesday’s performance soon went downhill from there.

Here’s what the fans have been saying…

The 26-year-old, who is out of contract this summer, was described as “class” by a couple of fans whilst one demanded that he is made captain following Monk’s hint that some players aren’t up to the challenge.

Another supporter praised Fox’s ‘zero-to-hero’ redemption claiming he has gone from the most hated player to the top of the retain list.

Other members of the travelling faithful were quick to hype the Welshman up even more…

There were a couple of shouts for the player of the season so far while one went as far as saying Fox has been the ‘player of the decade.’

It didn’t stop there either as comparisons were made to an iconic left-back…

Fox provided the pin-point assist for their opening goal of the game, and fans were quick to say he was playing like Brazil legend Roberto Carlos.

It has been reported that the club are in talks over renewing his contract, which should please some fans going by this reaction on Monday evening.

Who the heck is that?! Can you name all of these obscure Sheffield Wednesday players…

West Ham: Fans praise Jeremy Ngakia for his debut performance against Liverpool

West Ham United moved even closer to the relegation zone on Wednesday as they suffered a 2-0 home defeat against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

The result means that the Hammers are now above the bottom three by just a single goal (BBC Sport), so the threat of relegation is now very real for David Moyes’ side.

There were few positives to come from the defeat against the league leaders, but several fans did come away happy with the performance of youngster Jeremy Ngakia.

The 19-year-old was making his first-team debut for West Ham, replacing Pablo Zabaleta in the right-wing back position, and he may just have cemented the spot for their next game against Brighton.

Indeed, playing in the top flight for the first time, the young Englishman did fairly well, winning 66.7% of his ground duels and making two successful tackles. Added to that he wasn’t dribbled past at all during the game (SofaScore).

His display certainly caught the eye of plenty of West Ham fans, many of whom took to Twitter to heap praise on him after the game. Here is what some had to say…

Celtic fans react after Neil Lennon drops Marian Shved from Europa League squad

Celtic fans have been reacting on Twitter after manager Neil Lennon said he will drop winger Marian Shved from their Europa League squad to Celtic TV, via Celts Are Here.

Hopes would have been high that the 22-year-old would make a big impression at Paradise after he arrived at the Scottish Premiership champions in the summer, having signed in January 2019 before being loaned back to Karpaty.

It hasn’t exactly worked out like that for the Ukraine international though, who has played just 35 minutes of football in all competitions under Lennon this term.

The Northern Irish boss has explained why he feels the attacker is struggling, despite being in Scotland for more than six months now.

Lennon told Celtic TV, via Celts Are Here: “He’s found it difficult, he’s struggled with the English, in training, he’s not getting at the level as the rest of them are. He’s still a very talented player, but he’s still taking a bit more time to adapt.”

Some suggested that the 48-year-old is in the wrong with his comments about him struggling with the language, while also suggesting that he won’t improve unless he is given some playing time.

One fan suggested that the club now needs to rely on loanee Moi Elyounoussi to step up in Europe.

The Southampton player has missed the last two months through injury, but The Scottish Sun reported last week that the Norway international was due back in training on Friday.

Only real Celtic fans will get 100% on the Ultimate Hoops quiz. Test your knowledge below…

The 25-year-old scored seven goals and provided a further six assists in 13 appearances in all competitions prior to his problem.

One supporter was “gutted” for Shved, while two more went a step further with their comments which suggested this could be the end for the 22-year-old at Celtic Park.

Given his lack of football under Neil Lennon, you would have to say that as things stand it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him go in the summer.

In other Celtic news, Hoops fans on Twitter were highly critical of one 22-year-old’s performance against Hamilton…

Man Utd’s summer transfer plans revealed by Samuel Luckhurst

According to The Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst, Manchester United “want to make at least three more signings in time for the start of next season”.

What’s the word?

The Red Devils made just three permanent signings last summer, when they brought in Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire. The Manchester side also saw some notable exits, including the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera.

Having sealed a £47m deal for Bruno Fernandes in the final week of the January transfer window, it appears United are intent on splashing the cash this summer. According to Luckhurst, the club have “budgeted for between three and five additions this calendar year”.

It’s further claimed they are expected to make at least three signings, with a midfielder, forward and striker being prioritised – the likes of James Maddison, Jack Grealish, Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho are all on the radar.

Much-needed

Clinching the signing of Fernandes – who was reported to have been of interest to them even last summer – should be seen as just the start for United. The Red Devils currently find themselves outside of the top four, and are 38 points behind runaway leaders Liverpool.

If they are to even think about closing that gap, then there surely has to be more permanent arrivals than there were last summer. United’s failure to sign a replacement for Lukaku played a big role in them scrambling around on deadline day trying to sign a striker on loan – in the end, they managed to bring in Odion Ighalo.

If Luckhurst’s report is accurate and United pull off at least three signings, then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will feel more confident about bridging the gap to the top. It will become more of his own team than something his predecessors have built, and he will have no excuses whatsoever.

Meanwhile, Scott McTominay has delivered a glowing verdict on this teammate.

Southampton’s stance on hot topic is revealed

Southampton’s stance on a particularly hot topic has been revealed.

Following Moussa Marega’s awful treatment in a recent clash between Porto and Vitória de Guimarães – in which he was subjected to racist abuse, before trying to leave the pitch only for his teammates to try and stop him, while the referee also booked him – Vice reacted.

The popular media outlet got in touch with every Premier League club to ask what they would do if one of their players also attempted to leave the field of play after receiving similar treatment to Marega.

You can see what Southampton’s stance on the matter is below.

What did they say?

Vice revealed that Southampton said: “As a club, we would support a player’s decision wholeheartedly.”

Portrays them in a good light

As a result of the engagement this article has generated – the man who wrote it, Dipo Faloyin, saw his tweet of the piece earn almost 2k retweets and over 4k likes – it was important that Southampton didn’t make themselves look bad when responding to the question.

Their answer is short, simple and effective. It details that they will not allow one of their players to feel the isolation that Marega surely felt at Porto, and also shows that they will not tolerate racist abuse in any way.

Southampton’s stance is a simple one, but it was key for them to answer well – clubs such as Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Wolves declined to comment on the matter, which raises question marks over what their exacts thoughts on the matter actually are.

From non-League to the Premier League: Where did these top-flight stars begin their careers?

There is only one right answer to Faloyin’s question, and Southampton represented themselves well.

Kamil Grosicki issues two-word verdict on West Brom man

West Brom bolstered their claims to land the Championship title with an enthralling display this weekend.

The Baggies made it five games unbeaten with their fourth win in as many matches after they defeated fellow promotion hopefuls Bristol City 3-0 at Ashton Gate.

There’s now a nine-point margin to the playoff positions whilst Albion are also four adrift of nearest challengers, Leeds United.

Hal Robson-Kanu bagged himself an impressive brace against the Robins and took to Instagram after the match to wax lyrical about the victory.

And January arrival Kamil Grosicki responded with the words “Big Boss” to sum up the 30-year-old’s display…

The Pole, who only arrived from Hull City on Deadline Day, is clearly already settling into the Championship front-runners superbly as this glowing endorsement of his teammate shows.

Robson-Kanu’s double takes him to nine for the season whilst Grosicki has been restricted to four appearances from the bench since his £800k switch last month.

The workhorse has been able to cement his name as Slaven Bilic’s first-choice centre-forward despite the Croatian opting to sign Charlie Austin and Kenneth Zohore in the summer for seven-figure fees.
