West Ham make late January contact to sign ex-Liverpool star on loan

West Ham United have made a shock late enquiry over signing a former Liverpool star on loan, with Graham Potter’s side looking set for an active end to this January transfer window.

West Ham table late January bids in effort to secure signing

The Irons have no shortage of targets for this latter stage of the winter window, as reported bids are submitted for West Ham’s prime attacking targets with talks also being held.

West Ham held negotiations with Ajax to sign Brian Brobbey, and even agreed personal terms with the Dutchman on a £100,000-per-week contract (Alex Crook, talkSPORT), but as things stand, a club-to-club deal is looking unlikely due to the finances involved.

This has led West Ham to explore other January forward options, and one of them is reliably believed to be Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson, who is a prime target for the east Londoners amid reports he’ll be allowed to depart on loan.

Ferguson is also reportedly willing to join West Ham, handing Potter a boost as the tactician looks to bolster his attacking options after long-term injuries to both Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio.

After West Ham also saw a bid rejected for PSV Eindhoven star Ricardo Pepi, co-chair David Sullivan and the recruitment team appear fully intent on signing a new striker before February 3rd’s deadline.

However, it is also believed that they’re keen on a new midfield man for the engine room.

West Ham make surprise contact over signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

According to Turkish news outlet Sozcu, former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on their list of potential new additions.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for Besiktas.

West Ham have contacted Bestikas over signing Oxlade-Chamberlain in a surprise late January move, and they could even free up space for the ex-England international by offloading both Tomas Soucek and James Ward-Prowse.

They’re said to want the 31-year-old on a temporary deal with an option to make his move permanent. Oxlade-Chamberlain is also keen on a return to the Premier League, so they may not have that much trouble convincing the player.

“He came here, had played from time to time at wing-back at Arsenal, winger for sure, and he became a proper No.8 here in the way we wanted to play,” said Jurgen Klopp in 2023.

“Super-energetic, technically outstanding.”

Why do some of the top Asian batters struggle to attack spin in T20 cricket?

Mickey Arthur reckons it’s because they don’t use the sweep and reverse-sweep as much against the spinners

Sruthi Ravindranath03-Sep-20225:17

Why are Asian batters struggling against spin in T20 cricket?

Are Asian batters the best at attacking spin? While popular perception given the pitches in the sub-continent might indicate that they are, the numbers tell a different story, especially in T20 cricket.Mickey Arthur, who has coached Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well as teams in the PSL and BPL, believes that while the subcontinent does produce great spinners, he’s had to work hard with batters – even the likes of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan – to raise their game against spin.”That was something that did amaze me,” Arthur said on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out during the Asia Cup. “I thought going and coaching in the subcontinent, which is a fantastic place to coach, we’d see batsmen play [spin] particularly well because they grow up with it. I saw incredible spin bowlers. But something we had to really work on was batsmen playing spin better. They could defend against spin but it was in the white-ball cricket, where you have the wrist-spinner or the finger-spinner that suffocated through the middle.”You know we worked so hard on Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, Fakhar Zaman using their sweep shots a lot more. And these were the areas we focused on and worked incredibly hard on. To make them better players particularly through their middle overs.”Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, batters from the top Asian teams – India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan – have better strike rates against pace than spin. On the other hand, teams like England (134.15 against spin and 135.26 against pace), Australia (131.04 against spin and 128.48 against pace) and South Africa (142.16 against spin and 143.17 against pace) have similar strike rates against spice and pace.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

A top batter like Fakhar, who has scored at 130-plus against pace since the T20 World Cup last year, has a strike rate of only 105.95 versus spin. India’s openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul have the same issue: Rahul strikes at over 126 against pace but he slows down (86.11) against spin, while Rohit scores at 156.27 against pace and only 115.87 against spin.During his time as coach in the subcontinent, Arthur observed that Asian batters are traditionally wristy players who don’t use high-risk-high-reward shots like the reverse sweep against spin. According to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data, Virat Kohli and Babar have attempted the sweep or the reverse-sweep just twice and three times respectively since the 2021 T20 World Cup. Suryakumar Yadav and Dinesh Karthik, on the other hand, have attempted a sweep or reverse sweep 24 times (scoring 56 runs) and 20 times (scoring 36 runs) respectively.”I found that the modern Asian batsman didn’t really sweep,” Arthur said. “They didn’t reverse-sweep. Australia, England, South Africa used the sweep shot and reverse-sweep shots a lot more than the Asian batters, who relied on their wrists to work the balls into an area. And it was once that we got the sweep shots going that teams then had to change fields – that created holes for the Asian players to use their wrists where they’re predominantly comfortable and confident scoring.”Reverse sweep is something you continuously have to work on. It’s not like a cover drive that’s natural. This is something that takes subcontinent batters out of their comfort zones. Because they’ve relied so much on their excellent wrists – so if you look at the Indian batsman, Sri Lankan batsman or Pakistan batsman, they rely on opening the bat face and closing the bat face to push the ball into different areas. They don’t get a massive amount of power into those shots though. Those shots are good for singles or twos but not for boundary options. So they had to find options to get boundaries. For getting boundaries, it’s easier to attack the ball square of the wicket and that’s to sweep and reverse sweep …”Has having to deal with four or five quicks in opposition teams made Asian batters prioritise playing spin less? Arthur said it could be a reason.”We work on [playing] short-pitched bowling and pace because we think that takes them out of the comfort zone when they’ve got to play away from home. Where really if the batsmen’s technique is good, they play those balls particularly well. It comes down to actually playing spin, and that’s something as coaches we generally forget because we take it for granted that they play spinners well.”

Fulham considering deadline-busting move for "incredible" star Silva loves

Looking to steal the headlines for the first time this summer, Fulham are now reportedly considering a move to sign an attacking reinforcement who Marco Silva already knows well.

Fulham transfer news

For much of this month, the Cottagers have been forced to focus on keeping hold of star men such as Andreas Pereira amid reported interest from Brazilian side Fluminense. Having seemingly fought off that interest, however, Silva’s side could yet welcome their first reinforcement of the transfer window and one who needs no introduction to Craven Cottage.

Whilst any move would be arriving in the dying embers, Fulham should be in no position to panic given how they’ve impressed even without further reinforcements in the last month or so. Sitting as high as ninth and in a shock race to fight for a European place in the Premier League, Silva has created an established side ready to cause plenty of upsets and he could yet get one particular reunion in pursuit of that.

According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Fulham are now considering a move to re-sign Willian in a shock move folllowing his departure from Olympiacos to become a free at the beginning of the month.

Now 36 years old, the Brazilian has already stolen the headlines in West London on one ocassion in the past, playing a surprise starring role in the 2022/23 capaign despite initial doubts over his ability to still perform in the top flight.

Two years on, he could get the chance to prove those doubters wrong once again and play yet another starring role in Silva’s side. At such an age, however, it must be said that any stint may well be his last in the Premier League.

"Incredible" Willian could complete shock reunion

Even in a cameo role, Willian represents a player full of experience who knows exactly what it takes to push a side into the European places and earn the admiration of those at Craven Cottage. Earning plenty of praise from Silva in his last stint, the Portuguese manager told reporters as relayed by beIN Sports: “He was class. He’s a class player and he has incredible quality.

“He played with a very good intensity and it was probably one of his best games this season so far and I’m really pleased for him because of the quality he has. He did so many things. The way he created on the left was very good.

Fulham forward Willian.

“The players with the top quality can decide any moment of the game and they make the difference in football. The decisions Willian made came in the right moments and he’s a top-class player. He scored the goal because he believed he had other chances to score and I’m really pleased for him.”

In one last Premier League run, a 36-year-old Willian could bow out in perfect fashion by completing a move back to West London and back to England’s top flight.

Wyllie's maiden hundred hands Western Australia control

The 18-year-old crafted a superb innings in challenging conditions at the WACA

Teenager Teague Wyllie became the youngest player since Ricky Ponting to post a Sheffield Shield century, with his heroics putting Western Australia in the box seat against New South Wales at the WACA Ground.WA were bowled out for 258 in the final act of day two, giving them a lead of 78 after NSW were rolled for 180 on day one.Wyllie was the hero of the day, cracking 15 boundaries on the way to posting 104 off 204 balls. The 18-year-old was playing just his third first-class match and showed maturity beyond his years to guide WA out of early trouble. At 18 years and 163 days, Wyllie was the youngest player to reach triple figures in Shield cricket since Ponting, who was 18 years and 40 days when he notched his maiden ton in the competition. And it appears WA have found another diamond in the rough in the form of 21-year-old debutant Sam Fanning.Related

Morris lands early blows for WA but Dwarshuis' debut strikes lift NSW

Fanning scored 32 runs off 161 balls at a pain-staking strike rate of 19.88 to help quell the NSW attack on a bowler-friendly wicket. Tailender Matt Kelly then posted an unbeaten 47 off 86 balls to ram home WA’s advantage.NSW debutant Ben Dwarshuis was the pick of the bowlers, with his early onslaught leaving WA in trouble at 3 for 39. They were still in strife at 6 for 100 before Wyllie, Joel Paris (25) and Kelly buckled down.WA started the day at 2 for 18 and Hilton Cartwright was the first to fall after being given out lbw to Jack Edwards. Although the ball struck Cartwright on the back leg it looked as though it was going to sail over the stumps. But WA received a couple of lucky breaks just before lunch. Wyllie survived a confident lbw shout from quick bowler Liam Hatcher. And next over Fanning was lucky to be given not out after being struck on the pads by spinner Nathan Lyon.Fanning’s strike rate of 19.55 at the lunch break didn’t make for pretty reading. But his grit on a tricky wicket proved crucial in steadying the ship. Wyllie’s determination also proved vital, especially once Fanning departed.Dwarshuis left WA reeling with two quick wickets late on Monday, and he returned to take the key scalps of Josh Philippe and Aaron Hardie shortly before tea on Tuesday. But Wyllie refused to give in and he gained in confidence the longer his innings went. He departed late in the day when he edged Chris Tremain to slip.  By then, WA already had a handy first-innings lead that could prove crucial in the final result.

Ben Stokes guides nervy England through to World Cup semi-finals

Sri Lanka take chase down to final over as England middle order unravels after fast start

England are through to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, knocking Australia out in the process, thanks to a four-wicket win over Sri Lanka. It was an anxiety-riddled chase in the final match in Group 1, despite a target of 142 looking well within reach after openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales posted 75 for the first wicket inside eight overs. But a series of unforced errors saw six wickets fall in the space of 65 deliveries, for the addition of just 54. The trio of Wanindu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva and Lahiru Kumara split those dismissals evenly between them and for a moment an upset looked well and truly on the cards. But Ben Stokes – as ever – saw England over the line with 42 from 36 that only contained two fours but constantly worked the scoreboard and Sri Lanka’s outfielders before Chris Woakes’ cut for four confirmed victory with two balls left. Stokes came in at No. 3 after Dawid Malan injured his groin fielding and showed typical poise under immense pressure. It was a far closer than it should have been, England having fought back strongly to limit Sri Lanka to a modest total after opener Pathum Nissanka (67 off 45) got them off to a flyer. For Australia, now officially done as defending champions, they will wonder what might have been having relinquished the opportunity to surpass England’s net run rate with their own modest win over Afghanistan on Friday. But for Nissanka’s blitz, which had Sri Lanka 65 for 1 after seven overs, there was little around him as England’s collective attack served up cutters and slower deliveries that were responding well to a worn surface at the SCG. Adil Rashid’s 1 for 16 from his four overs led the retort, though Mark Wood collected the more eye-catching figures of 3 for 26, two of them coming in the 20th over, which also featured a run out, as Sri Lanka crept to 141 for 8 – the lowest total posted first at this ground in the competition. England also became the first to win at the SCG when chasing.Buttler’s charges now head to Adelaide for their semi-final. They will play whoever finishes first in Group 2, which culminates on Sunday.Stokes. Again
Make no mistake, there was always going to be a space for Stokes, even if the pre-tournament conversations over whether he is in England’s best T20 team were merited. In many ways, it is his bowling that has been as close to a revelation as you can get for a multifaceted cricketer admired the world over, and yet again he opened up, finishing with 1 for 24 from three overs. Batting, however, was where the real question remained and it took until England were in the doldrums in Sydney to truly appreciate how valuable he is.Yes, his best spot is as an opener, but the way he gauged the conditions around him – both the tangible challenge of the pitch and intangible stress of having to be the saviour once more – was a reminder of his unparalleled worth to England. He only hit two fours, picking up the majority of his runs with his feet, as that problematic left knee worked more overtime. He is still yet to register a fifty in T20Is, and this score was only the third time he has passed 40 in 35 innings, not that he or his team-mates will care.If Malan’s injury is as feared, a batting replacement will have to be drafted in, and there is no guarantee Stokes will reprise his first-drop role in the semi-final. Whatever position he comes in at, there can be no doubt England’s best XI is one with him in it.Rashid dulls with class
Four games played, 16 overs bowled and, finally, a wicket. It has been a peculiar tournament for Rashid, one which has seen the legspinner operate as a dampener rather than a disruptor. Even though the former is a role of immense value in this format, the fear was the shoulder injury that has limited his usual zip off the pitch was cutting into his incisiveness. Of course, the reality may be closer to the fact batters are more watchful against him, willing to play his overs out before making hay at the other end. Here, he wedded both sides: stopping Sri Lanka in their tracks – he did not concede a boundary in his four overs – and dismissing Nissanka. Had he failed at either task, things would have ended very differently. As it happens, he now has 90 T20I wickets – the joint most for an Englishman, level with Chris Jordan.Change of pace
In a tournament where those topping the speed gun have stolen the headlines, here was a fixture that rewarded shifting down a few gears. The spinners were always likely to shine on this used pitch, but the quicks got in on the act with variations of their own. England’s attack sussed this halfway through and by the halfway stage, pace-off deliveries were going at 4.87 runs per over, while pace-on checked in at 8.46. The most notable element of this in the second innings came in the 18th over, when Sri Lanka’s own speedster Lahiru Kumara bowled six balls – almost entirely reserved and into the pitch – that yielded just two runs and the wicket of Sam Curran, leaving England needing over a run a ball for the last two overs.
