Jayden Seales, Obed McCoy and Odean Smith have earned their maiden Cricket West Indies (CWI) international retainer contracts for men, for the period between July 1, 2022, and June 20, 2023. Also joining the list of 18 are Brandon King, Rovman Powell and Romario Shepherd, while the now-retired Kieron Pollard, as well as Fabien Allen, Darren Bravo, Evin Lewis, Rahkeem Cornwall and Shannon Gabriel have been omitted from the previous group.Related

Development contracts, meanwhile, have been given to allrounders Mandy Mangru and Jannillea Glasgow and batter Rashada Williams of the West Indies women’s set-up. From the previous cycle, Britney Cooper, Sheneta Grimmond, Shawnisha Hector and Qiana Joseph have been excluded and, apart from the other three new faces, Karishma Ramharack has been added. In all a total of 36 players – men and women – have been included in the contracts’ list. This is in addition to the 90 players, who are contracted to the territorial board franchise squads. For the period in question, the men’s retainer structure has been changed, according to a CWI statement, “to offer player contracts across all formats of cricket, compared to specific red or white-ball contracts in previous years”. This came after a performance-evaluation period from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2022, supported by data from the 2019-2020 evaluation period. CWI said: “This allows for all players to be appraised immediately after the Evaluation Period and provides a notice period before new contracts start on 1 July, 2022. The system is designed to reward hard work and performance results.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“We think this is a dynamic group, with the right mixture of experience and youthfulness to properly represent the people of the Caribbean,” Desmond Haynes, the men’s lead selector, said. “With general retainer contracts, it gives us a pool of talented and dedicated cricketers, who can take West Indies cricket forward in years to come.”The addition of Mangru, Glasgow and Williams have taken the total number of women players on development contracts to six, as they joined Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi and Kaysia Schultz.”The selectors have placed a great focus on the young developing players because these are the ones who will help to build the team as we look towards the future,” women’s lead selector Ann Browne-John said. “The panel believes that the combination of experienced players and the emerging players will give a good base as we continue to prepare teams for international matches and the T20 World Cup early next year.”CWI added in the statement that “all players who are no longer awarded international retainer contracts are offered an A grade Regional Franchise Contract for the following year”.Full list of contracted players – men

Imagine him & Kyogo: Celtic considering bid for £2.5m-rated Maeda upgrade

Celtic turn their attention away from the Scottish Premiership this weekend as they prepare to host Kilmarnock at Parkhead in their first match in the SFA Cup this season.

The Hoops won the competition, thanks to a last-minute goal from Adam Idah, by beating Rangers at Hampden Park at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, and are looking to retain their crown.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have, of course, already won the other domestic cup this term, beating their Glasgow rivals on penalties at the national stadium in the League Cup final last month.

The Bhoys are also 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership table and are on course to win the Scottish top-flight for the fourth season running.

There is plenty, therefore, for Rodgers to be happy about in regards to his team’s performance this term, but that has not stopped him from wanting to dip into the market to make additions to his squad.

The January transfer window does not close until the start of next month and the Scottish giants are reportedly looking to bolster their options in the wide areas before the deadline passes.

Celtic eyeing up new winger

According to the Daily Record, Celtic are one of the clubs interested in a potential swoop for BK Hacken forward Zeidane Inoussa this month, as they eye up a new winger to improve the squad.

The report claims that French side St Etienne are also keen on the Swedish youngster and have sent scouts to watch him in action in his home country this season.

It adds that the Hoops have also sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old attacker on a regular basis in recent weeks, to collect information on his performances to help them decide whether or not to act upon their interest in him.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

The Daily Record states that Rodgers has made signing a new left-sided forward a priority for the January transfer window, as he wants competition for Daizen Maeda and to resolve the uncertainty over Luis Palma’s long-term future at Parkhead.

The outlet claims that Celtic are now considering a bid to sign the right-footed whiz to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch, just as they did last January when they swooped to sign Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna.

It is not revealed how much Hacken would demand for their Sweden U21 international, but the young gem is valued at €3m (£2.5m) by Transfermarkt, which may help to give a ballpark figure in regards to what Celtic may have to spend to secure his signature before the end of the window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Any left winger arriving at Parkhead this month will have to compete with Maeda to secure a starting spot in the team, so what do they have to compete against?

Daizen Maeda's form this season

The Japan international has racked up 14 goals and six assists in 29 appearances in all competitions this season, with six goals and one assist coming in three League Cup outings.

Maeda has provided a threat as a scorer and a creator of goals in all competitions for the Scottish giants but his form in the Premiership has been far from perfect on the left flank.

As you can see in the table above, the 27-year-old winger has averaged a goal or an assist every other game on average, but his finishing has been less-than-impressive.

The Japanese attacker has missed a whopping 12 ‘big chances’ in front of goal and only scored five times in the Premiership, which suggests that he has not made the most of the quality opportunities that his teammates have created for him on a regular basis.

Celtic's Daizen Maeda.

These statistics suggest that there is room for the Hoops to find a player who could come in and offer more than Maeda, particularly in the league, in the final third.

Why Celtic should sign Inoussa

The Scottish giants should swoop to sign Inoussa before the end of the January transfer window because he has the potential to be an upgrade on the Japan international on the left wing, and he could be a dream signing for Kyogo Furuhashi.

Celtic’s number eight has produced ten goals in 15 starts in the Premiership this season, which is a solid return, but he has also spurned a staggering 17 ‘big chances’ in front of goal.

Kyogo is not a clinical striker who is going to score every chance that comes his way. However, he is a forward whose movement consistently puts him into great positions for his teammates to find him in the final third, which is why he could love playing with Inoussa, who has the quality to find him.

In the 2023 Allsvenskan, the 22-year-old whiz scored five goals and created four ‘big chances’ in ten appearances for Hacken, and he followed that up with more strong performances in 2024.

As you can see in the table above, Inoussa has the potential to come in as an upgrade on Maeda by being more ruthless in front of goal as a finisher and by creating chances for his teammates more frequently.

The Sweden U21 international has produced 11 goals and ten ‘big chances’ created in his last 32 league games for Hacken, whilst Maeda has managed 11 goals and ten ‘big chances’ created in his last 48 league outings for Celtic.

Therefore, Kyogo could benefit from playing with Inoussa on the left flank, rather than Maeda, because it could result in more ‘big chances’ falling his way in the box.

Signing the Hacken star would provide the Japanese winger with serious competition for his place in the side and ensure that complacency does not set in during the second half of the season, which could also help the club in their pursuit of more trophies this term.

Gill, Dhawan and Chahal power India to 3-0 sweep

The batters, led by Gill’s unbeaten 98, fired India to 225 from 36 overs, and West Indies barely got going in the chase

Himanshu Agrawal27-Jul-2022

Shubman Gill came out all guns blazing post the rain break•Associated Press

After tight contests in the first two matches that went down to the final over, India rode on a career-best unbeaten 98 from Shubman Gill to sweep past West Indies in the third ODI and win the series 3-0.There were also strong performances from captain Shikhar Dhawan, who scored 58; Shreyas Iyer, who made 44 off 34 balls; and Yuzvendra Chahal, who took 4 for 17 in just four overs.Frequent rain delays had forced India’s innings to be curtailed to 40 overs, and the visitors were on 225 for 3 in 36 when another interruption left Gill stranded 2 short of his maiden ODI century. The West Indies were set a target of 257 in 35 overs according to the DLS method, and they were never in the chase.Mohammed Siraj struck twice in the second over of the chase, bowling Kyle Mayers with a good length delivery and trapping Shamarh Brooks lbw with one that angled in. Nine deliveries into their innings, West Indies were 0 for 2.Brandon King and Shai Hope brought them back on track with a 47-run stand before Yuzvendra Chahal had Hope stumped for 22. King and his captain Nicholas Pooran began another recovery, but Axar Patel’s arm-ball in the 14th over bowled King for 42.Pooran hit Deepak Hooda’s part-time offspin for a six and a four immediately after, keeping his team afloat as the required rate hovered around eight an over. However, Keacy Carty’s struggle to get going seemed to put pressure back on Pooran, and when Carty finally decided to try something different – skipping down to Shardul Thakur in the 19th over – he bottom edged on to his stumps for 5 off 17 balls.By then, West Indies needed nearly 10 an over, and when Pooran was dismissed for 42 – caught at mid-on off Prasidh Krishna – in the 22nd over, the game was up.West Indies’ struggle for partnerships was in contrast to how India had built their innings, despite being interrupted by the weather. Following stands of 119 and 48 in the first two matches, the openers Dhawan and Gill put on 113 in the third ODI. It was an innings of two halves for India: the first 24 overs produced 115 runs; the next 12 yielded 110.When play resumed after the first rain delay, India had 16 overs remaining, and Gill and Iyer switched gears to accelerate. They came down the pitch to the spinners, attempted reverse sweeps, played aerial pulls and drives, and kept lofting over the in-field.Gill and Iyer added 86 for the second wicket in less than ten overs, making up for the sedate beginning after Dhawan had won the toss. Dhawan was quiet to start the innings, his 58 coming off 74 balls on a slow pitch where he did try attacking, but often failed to time and place the ball.In contrast, India scored 31 runs off the first two overs after the rain break – including four fours and two sixes – but Gill and Iyer’s momentum was soon broken by the rain once again. When play resumed, there was no time to lose, and Iyer swung Hayden Walsh Jr’s second ball over deep square leg for six. He placed the next ball to the backward-point boundary, before Gill ended the over by lofting the spinner over his head for another six.West Indies brought pace from the other end, only for Iyer to hit a four off Jayden Seales and Gill to slam consecutive fours, the first of which was supremely timed past mid-off. Both batters continued finding the boundary against Jason Holder and Akeal Hosein, before Iyer swatted Hosein to long-on for 44 off 34 balls.Gill finished with a run-a-ball 98 after being 51 off 65 balls at one stage, but he could have got to his maiden ODI hundred had he been a bit quicker at the end: he scored only 13 off his last 14 deliveries. In the end, though, he had done enough to win India the match and himself the Player-of-the-Series award.

Everton make contact over deal to sign "outstanding" Brazil international

Everton have now held talks with the agents of an “outstanding” midfielder they are looking at signing this month, according to a report.

Moyes eyeing midfielders after Spurs win

The Toffees’ 3-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend provided them with some much-needed breathing room in the Premier League relegation battle, now sitting four points clear of the bottom three with a game in hand.

However, the job is by no means close to being done yet, with just under half of the season left to play, and David Moyes remains interested in strengthening his squad by bringing in a new midfielder this month.

Moyes could look to raid Chelsea in the final week of the January transfer window, identifying both Carney Chukwuemeka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as potential midfield targets, having failed to establish themselves as regular starters at Stamford Bridge.

According to a report from Tutto Juve (via Sport Witness), Juventus’ Arthur Melo is also now emerging as a target for Everton, and they have taken their first step towards getting a deal done by making contact with his agents.

Arthur Melo for Fiorentina.

Melo was a first-team regular for Fiorentina last season, but he hasn’t been part of Thiago Motta’s plans this term, meaning he could move elsewhere this winter.

Real Betis are also interested in signing the midfielder, and at one point it looked like a deal was close, but negotiations came to a halt, which could give the Toffees an opportunity to swoop in.

Developments were expected quickly in the hours following the initial contact, but as yet it is unclear whether the Blues have made any progress towards getting a deal done.

Everton "have made moves" to sign "very interesting" 24 y/o international

David Moyes isn’t messing around.

ByHenry Jackson Jan 20, 2025 Melo could be a solid signing for Everton

The 28-year-old has already played in England before, albeit briefly, with his stint at Liverpool being significantly hampered by injury, but he did enough to impress Jordan Henderson during his time at Anfield.

Since then, the Brazilian has managed to put his injury problems behind him, making 48 appearances in all competitions for Fiorentina last season and establishing himself as a key player.

Of course, there will be concerns about the former Liverpool man’s injury history, but he showed signs of being back to his best last season, averaging a 7.12 SofaScore match rating in the Serie A, among the highest in the squad.

Melo proved he deserves a second chance to prove himself in the Premier League with his performances last season, and given that he isn’t getting any game time at Juventus, it seems likely that Everton could stand a good chance of concluding a deal.

– Estava me sentindo bem.

Allrounder informs BCB of his decision after being asked to choose between “playing for Bangladesh” and “staying with betting”

Shakib Al Hasan has withdrawn from his sponsorship deal with a company called Betwinner News, according to BCB’s cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus. The news comes shortly after Nazmul Hassan, the BCB president, had stated that Shakib would never play for Bangladesh again if he did not end his “affiliation with a betting company”.Yunus said that Shakib informed the BCB of his decision in a letter on Thursday evening.”Shakib has informed us shortly before [now] that he has terminated the contract with the company. He said that all social media posts pertaining to that sponsorship will be deleted,” Yunus told ESPNcricinfo. The existing laws of Bangladesh place stringent prohibitions on any gatherings or establishments that facilitate gambling. Allowing gambling businesses to function is in contravention to the law, as well as the country’s constitution. Shakib’s endorsement with the betting company was reportedly a violation of this law.On August 2, Shakib put out a social media post announcing his partnership with Betwinner News. A couple of days later, Hassan said that the board will investigate Shakib’s sponsorship post. Then, Betwinner News put out a message on their homepage saying it “doesn’t have any relation to any kind of betting or gambling activities” and that it’s a “sports news portal only”.On Wednesday afternoon, Hassan said that that Shakib had to choose between playing for Bangladesh and keeping his endorsement with the company, giving the allrounder a day to make his decision. He said that the BCB recognised “Betwinner News as a surrogate company of the betting company Betwinner”.”The law is clear-cut about what companies are prohibited (by the BCB), and this company is related to betting,” Hassan had said. “You can call as a news (company), but it is branded as a betting company. It is a part (of the betting company). We have said that it cannot be related (to a betting company).”He (Shakib) has to decide if he wants to play for Bangladesh, or stay with betting. There’s no scope of keeping that association. He has to come out of it completely. Let alone the captaincy, he won’t be in the team. There’s no discussion. We have taken a very clear decision. Anyone who has any affiliation with a betting company can’t have a connection with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. We will not take him in the team unless we get a satisfactory answer from him.”Shakib backing out of the contentious deal puts him back in the running to take over the T20I captaincy. Shakib was originally thought to be Bangladesh’s captain in the format for the upcoming Asia Cup, before he made the social media post. The situation with Shakib, and a number of injuries, delayed Bangladesh in naming their squad for the tournament. They are now likely to make the announcement on Saturday, well past the deadline.
