Worth less than Dike: West Brom hit gold selling star who had "great value"

Despite picking up a gigantic 11 draws from 21 Championship contests so far this season, Carlos Corberan’s West Bromwich Albion are still very much in the conversation for promotion.

The Baggies’ 2-1 loss to Watford last weekend was amazingly their first defeat in 13 games, as Tom Cleverley’s Hornets just about got the better of the stern away side through a Vakoun Bayo brace.

Corberan will want his troops to immediately bounce back when Bristol City travel to the Hawthorns this coming Sunday, but will know this clash will be yet another contest that Daryl Dike won’t be deemed fit for as his nightmare in the West Midlands goes on.

Dike's continued injury issues

Dike hasn’t donned a Baggies strip since going down with an unfortunate Achilles tendon injury versus Ipswich Town back in February, with the American well-known to those in the treatment room at this point.

Staggeringly, the ex-Barnsley man has been absent for a colossal 117 games due to recurring injury troubles since making a bumper £7m move a reality.

Thankfully, Corberan has been able to rely on the likes of Josh Maja and Karlan Grant to fire in the goals this season whilst Dike remains sidelined, with Maja boasting ten goals on his own in the Championship whilst Grant has an ever-growing five next to his name.

The Spaniard will be glad that this duo in question have found their shooting boots, having had to wave goodbye to Brandon Thomas-Asante this summer after he switched allegiances to Coventry City.

But, that sale doesn’t hurt as much now when you consider Thomas-Asante’s ongoing struggles with the Sky Blues.

Thomas-Asante's time at West Brom

The ex-Salford City attacker was a top performer for West Brom on his day, with the 25-year-old wearing the tag of being the club’s top scorer last season in the second tier when powering home 11 strikes.

In total, Thomas-Asante would score 21 times for Corberan’s men across 78 games, which would pique the interest of fellow Championship side Coventry this summer on their hunt for some fresh blood up top.

In the end, Thomas-Asante would live up to then West Brom manager Steve Bruce’s glowing words after his arrival at the club in 2022, who stated that the striker would be of “great value” as a “young” and “hungry” option to call upon.

But, although Bruce was ultimately justified in dishing out these compliments, the Ghanaian has since gone on to look goal-shy in his new surroundings, whilst Corberan and Co simply just get on with business with Maja and Grant to call upon.

Worryingly for the 25-year-old, he has only been able to find the back of the net once from 20 clashes in the league this season, with that solitary strike coming all the way back in October versus Blackburn Rovers.

To pile on the misery even more, Thomas-Asante – as per Transfermarkt – has a lesser transfer value than the aforementioned Dike, with the ex-West Brom man only worth £2.4m when contrasted next to his injury-prone counterpart’s slightly higher £2.6m price tag.

Dike will pray that he can make a miraculous recovery from injury soon to become a key part of Corberan’s side again, but Thomas-Asante – on the contrary – will worry that his game-time at Coventry will only lessen now with Frank Lampard in charge.

Whilst it could’ve been a sale that damaged the Baggies severely, the promotion chasers show no visible scars from the departure now, as another playoff finish continues to be eyed up.

Forget Maja: Corberan could have found West Brom’s next Thomas-Asante

West Bromwich Albion could now have a new Brandon Thomas-Asante in their ranks.

Ollie Pope 84, Jamie Smith hundred turns tables for Surrey at Gloucestershire

Visitors recover from 37 for 3 with Smith central to consecutive century stands

Jamie Smith served up defiance aplenty to register a hard-earned hundred and give Surrey the upper hand on day one of the LV=Insurance County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium.Without a score of note in two previous outings this season, the 21-year-old found his touch to raise 111 not out from 238 balls, holding sway for five hours to help the Londoners recover from a poor start and reach the close well-placed on 294 for 4.Having played second fiddle to England batter Ollie Pope in an alliance of 151 for the fourth wicket earlier in the day, he then shared in an unbroken stand of 106 with Sam Curran as Division One leaders Surrey took control in the final session.Smith was not named in Surrey’s initial squad for the game but was a late replacement for Ben Foakes, who was ruled out with a stiff back – unrelated to his collision with Jamie Overton last week – and is expected to be available for their next County Championship game. “For Smudger to get the call last night and come up after missing out on the last game and then end with a hundred shows where he’s at as a cricketer,” Pope said.Eager to be a part of England’s future under new managing director Rob Key and captain Ben Stokes, Pope weighed in with a notable 84, while free-wheeling Curran served up a late afternoon flourish to finish unbeaten on 57 and issue a timely reminder of his own to the selectors.Still seeking their first win of the season, Gloucestershire won the toss for the first time in 2022, elected to field and promptly reduced the visitors to 37 for 3 on a green-tinged pitch. But four dropped catches on a bitterly cold day prevented them from taking advantage of the excellent start afforded them by left arm seamers David Payne and Matt Taylor, who claimed two wickets apiece and made life difficult for the batters.A return to county cricket for Mohammad Amir, recruited for the next three games, proved a chastening affair as the Pakistan star bowled with express pace but no luck, twice falling victim to fumbles in the slip cordon as the hosts paid the price for not taking their chances.Gloucestershire will especially regret giving Smith a life on 48, James Bracey going full length behind the stumps without quite managing to hold on, much to the chagrin of the aggrieved Amir. Smith certainly made the most of his escape, staging a crucial recovery in partnership with Pope.In the wake of a winter of discontent and bitter defeat, few players are guaranteed a place when England meet New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s on June 2. Yet Pope surely has a strong claim after his latest meaningful contribution, following scores of 127, 58 and 47 in Surrey’s first three games. Dropped on 72 by Miles Hammond at slip attempting to work Graeme van Buuren’s slow left arm, he took advantage of Gloucestershire’s profligacy and has now accrued 321 runs at an average of 64.2.Like his team-mates, Smith was prone to playing and missing outside off stump as the ball moved both ways off the pitch. But unlike those who went before him, he rode his luck and mustered the character, resolve and judgment needed to play himself in. Aided and abetted by the introduction of Jack Taylor’s offbreaks from the Bristol Pavilion end, he went to 50 via 118 balls, playing a pivotal role in a burgeoning partnership which required 33 overs to realise three figures. The stand was worth 151 when Gloucestershire were finally afforded some relief, Pope losing concentration momentarily and clipping a length ball from Payne to Jack Taylor at midwicket with the score on 188. But there was no stopping the indomitable Smith, who drove Ryan Higgins straight down the ground to register his 15th boundary and, with it, his first hundred of the season.Surrey had banked a batting bonus point by the time the second new ball was taken, and they had another in the bag after the aggressive Curran took advantage of a tiring attack to plunder nine boundaries in a 52-ball half century.Exposed to the worst of the conditions and dismissed relatively cheaply in their first innings in three previous matches, Gloucestershire jumped at the chance to insert their opponents when skipper van Buuren called correctly beneath leaden skies. His decision proved the right one, Surrey’s top order struggling to contain Amir’s pace and the movement generated by Payne and Matt Taylor during the morning session. In stark contrast to Pope, Rory Burns has done little to enhance his England credentials in recent times, and the opener again appeared out of sorts as he succumbed to Matt Taylor’s first ball, held by Chris Dent low down at second slip for 6.Playing his first game after a particularly debilitating bout of Covid, Payne announced himself by taking a wicket with his first delivery of the season, persuading the ball to nip back off the seam and pin Ryan Patel in his crease for 9. Hashim Amla never looked comfortable against the moving ball and the South African was eventually squared up by Taylor and caught by Hammond at third slip, at which point Surrey were well and truly under the pump.

Mohammad Nawaz's four-wicket haul leads Pakistan to series win

Left-arm spinner returns career-best figures to help hosts defend 275

Mohammad Nawaz broke the back of West Indies’ chase•PCB

Pakistan 275 for 8 (Babar 77, Imam 72, Hosein 3-52) beatWest Indies 155 (Brooks 42, Nawaz 4-19, Wasim 3-34) by 120 runs
Mohammad Nawaz allayed any concerns Pakistan might have had about posting a below-par total, producing the best bowling performance of his career to bundle West Indies out for 155. Coming in with Pakistan under pressure after West Indies’ pugnacious start to the chase of 276, Nawaz struck four times to gut the visitors’ middle order, figures of 4 for18 in his allotted ten sealing West Indies fate, and giving Pakistan a 120-run win to wrap up the series 2-0.West Indies’ innings began disastrously, with Shaheen Afridi removing their best batter Shai Hope in the first over, trapping him on his crease as he spooned a catch to cover. But what followed suggested West Indies were giving the chase a serious go, with the powerplay dominated by positive, fearless strokeplay from Kyle Mayers and Shamarh Brooks. Haris Rauf was the man they targeted early on, a gloriously nonchalant pulled six over square leg from Mayers perhaps the shot of the innings.Mayers then smashed Mohammad Wasim for a couple of fours and Shaheen for six straight back over his head as the visitors put on 71 in the powerplay. But off that phase’s final ball, Wasim cleaned him up to open the door for Pakistan’s spinners, and it was time for Nawaz to shine.Nawaz’s fourth ball was a harbinger of what would follow. He flighted it up to Brandon King, drawing him out of his crease before getting the ball to spin away and kiss the edge. The game had swung, despite a brief fourth-wicket stand, and Nawaz soon sent the last set batter, Brooks, on his way for 42, trapping him in front as he horribly miscued a sweep to leave them tottering at 102 for 4.But Nawaz was only halfway through. West Indies’ last hopes, Rovman Powell and Nicholas Pooran were sent back within three balls of each other as Nawaz exercised his full mastery over the opposition, varying the flight and exploiting the dip and turn to penetrate both players’ defences.Shadab Khan, at the other end, sent Romario Shepherd packing; by this time all realistic attempts at a chase were done. West Indies had lost four wickets for 18 runs, and while they limped along for another 35 runs, it was only a matter of time before they were put out of their misery. If you watched that Pakistan innings up first, you’d have seen what was coming, and if you didn’t, you’d know exactly how it panned out. Fakhar Zaman fell early, before Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam put on their customary century stand. It was followed by a stuttering of momentum and a collapse of the middle and lower order, once those two fell, leading Pakistan to stumble to 275. You’ve seen it before, you’ll see it again, you saw it today.West Indies’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein also had a good day in Multan•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan were fortunate enough to win the toss and not have to put their bowlers through another rigorous day out in the heat. Hasan Ali was finally taken out of the side, with Mohammad Wasim Jnr brought in. But at the top, it was a similar pattern for Pakistan, with a struggling Fakhar falling for an unconvincing 28-ball 17 as Pakistan made a slow start in the face of accurate West Indian bowling. It was Anderson Phillip, replacing Jayden Seales in the visitors’ XI, who got the wicket after Zaman top-edged one.Babar and Imam took over from there, steadying the innings for the next fifty runs or so before slowly moving through the gears and nudging the run rate up. It was nothing dramatic, just the usual platform-building, but as so often happens when these two are on song, it looked like there was no breaking that stand. Each of them brought up half-centuries, the sixth consecutive fifties for each of them, and little appeared to stand in the way of them bringing up personal three-figure scores. The only way a wicket would come about was if it were self-inflicted, and that indeed was what happened. In a moment that swung the momentum of the innings around, Imam set off for a run without looking up at his captain, who was busy ball-watching. When Babar looked up, Imam was barely two metres from him, and his fate was sealed. The opener smashed his bat into the turf in frustration while he walked off, but West Indies had been gifted a creek of hope.Babar was undone by some brilliant left arm orthodox bowling from Akeal Hosein, who managed both grip and turn on a surface that had offered up neither in such generous quantities two days ago. Looking to play against the turn saw the Pakistan captain fall 23 short of a hundred Pakistan have come to expect from him almost every game, his leading edge finding a cover fielder.Mohammad Haris came in and sought to inject some pace in the innings without ever looking like he had the ability to, in the face of a couple of quality West Indian bowlers, and promptly nicked off for a run-a-ball six. The final ten overs saw the West Indian bowling at their best, putting pressure on Pakistan with clumps of dot balls thanks to some glorious execution, both in terms of line and length and changes of pace. Alzarri Joseph led the way in that regard, his figures of 10-1-33-2 just rewards for what he produced.Khushdil Shah found batting a struggle, and while Pakistan got away the occasional boundary and big hit, the general trend by this stage all favoured West Indies. The last 15 overs saw just 89 runs scored as six wickets fell, and while Pakistan’s middle-order questions only deepened, West Indies will have sniffed an opportunity. It had seemed like a very realistic possibility until Nawaz came in and snuffed it out emphatically.

Liverpool prioritising move to sign "intelligent" £71m top target for Slot

Looking to add what is already a stacked frontline, Liverpool are now reportedly prioritising a move to sign an attacking reinforcement worth as much as £71m for Arne Slot in 2025.

Liverpool transfer news

It should be an interesting month for the Reds, with the January transfer window open and the chance for Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to negotiate pre-contract agreements with other clubs ahead of the summer now underway. And whilst those at Anfield are confident that Salah and Van Dijk will stay put, recent reports indicate that Alexander-Arnold may well be destined for Real Madrid.

In what is currently set to be a major blow, Liverpool will be left to pick themselves up and replace their vice-captain, be that through the emerging Conor Bradley or by looking towards the transfer market and options such as Jeremie Frimpong. Meanwhile, away from the backline, they’ve also set their sights on an attacking addition.

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool are now prioritising signing Marcus Thuram and see the Inter Milan forward – who has a release clause worth a hefty €85m (£71m) – as their top target in the attacking department.

Thuram has reportedly emerged as an option amid Darwin Nunez’s continued struggles under Arne Slot. The big-money forward has scored just four times under the Dutchman and has, as a result, fallen down the pecking order to the point that the Reds are reportedly open to selling the Uruguayan.

Liverpool willing to make January move to sign "phenomenal" £29m fullback

The Reds have instantly turned towards the transfer market…

ByTom Cunningham Jan 1, 2025

If the right offer allows those at Anfield to turn their attention towards Thuram, then there’s no doubt that Slot would be getting an instant upgrade on his struggling striker.

"Intelligent" Thuram would be instant upgrade on Nunez

If Nunez’s struggles were not already clear for all to see, the fact that Slot has preferred Luis Diaz – a natural winger – in the leading role rather than the former Benfica forward should paint quite the picture.

Opting for a more controlled approach under Slot, Nunez has proved to be an erratic player on more than one occasion since joining Liverpool and is struggling more than ever as a result. Now into his third season, the excuse of waiting for a player to settle is no longer available for the forward to cling onto and Thuram’s arrival would undoubtedly leave the Anfield door open for an exit.

Described as “intelligent” by analyst Ben Mattinson, Thuram is a controlled finisher where Nunez has proven to be an unreliable option. Whilst there will be concerns that, at 27 years old, his best is not yet to come, Liverpool would be wise to welcome a striker at the top of his game.

Personal terms now close: Spurs pushing to sign "ice-cold" Johnson upgrade

It has been a brutal campaign for Tottenham Hotspur so far this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are slipping down the Premier League table and seem to have an ever-expanding injury list, but there have been some positives as well.

For example, they took a 1-0 lead in the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool last night, and there are a number of attacking players, such as Brennan Johnson, who have been particularly effective.

The Welshman is currently the Lilywhites’ joint-top goalscorer across all competitions, but based on recent reports, the club could be about to sign another forward who could eventually take his place in the team.

Tottenham close in on international forward

According to a recent report from journalist Graeme Bailey, Tottenham are intensely interested in Paris Saint-Germain forward Randal Kolo Muani.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

In fact, in news that should delight the Lilywhites faithful, Bailey has claimed that the club are “now close to agreeing personal terms” with the player and “are pushing for a deal this week”, having given the player assurances over his potential game time.

According to reports earlier this month, the Parisians are potentially willing to agree to a loan, ideally with an obligation to buy, but would much prefer to sell the Frenchman, whom they value at around £50m.

It could be a complicated and potentially costly transfer to get over the line, but given Kolo Muani’s ability, it’s one worth pursuing, even if he could be bad news for Johnson.

How Kolo Muani compares to Johnson

So, the first thing to say is that, yes, for most of his career thus far, Kolo Muani has played as a central striker, but he has also made a decent number of appearances on the wings, so he should be more than comfortable starting out wide.

Moreover, with Dominic Solanke in brilliant form at the moment, it would be an odd decision to bring in the Frenchman and potentially put that at risk.

Therefore, the PSG ace could become the perfect rival for Johnson, whose place in the team is a little less guaranteed than the former Bournemouth man, but with that said, how does the Welshman stack up against his potential usurper?

Well, if we were to look at their pure output from this season, it would be an easy win for the former Nottingham Forest ace as he’s racked up a brilliant haul of 11 goals and three assists in 30 appearances, while his potential rival has just two goals and one assist in 14 appearances.

However, when we take a look at their output from last season, and the season prior compared with how many games and minutes they played in those campaigns, it becomes crystal clear that it’s the former Eintracht Frankfurt star who is the more dangerous attacker.

For example, in those two seasons, he scored 35 goals and provided 23 assists in 90 appearances, totalling 5869 minutes, meaning he maintained an average of a goal involvement every 1.55 games or every 101.18 minutes.

In contrast, the Nottingham-born star scored 15 goals and provided 13 assists in 82 appearances, totalling 5809 minutes, which comes to an average of a goal involvement every 2.92 games, or every 207.46 minutes.

However, it’s not just the output that gives the “ice-cold” talent, as dubbed by German legend Lothar Matthaus, an edge over the 23-year-old, it’s also his experience.

Not only has he played in the top flight in Germany and France, but he also has plenty of Champions League experience and has won 27 caps for the French national team, which, given the talent in that side, is seriously impressive.

Ultimately, Spurs could do with some more attacking options this season, and while he could take away minutes from Johnson, Kolo Muani would be an excellent addition to the squad this month, whether on loan or a permanent transfer.
