Classy Ismail holds nerve at the close to stop spirited Pakistan short

Quicks make the difference for South Africa as they win see-saw contest by six runs

Shabnim Ismail defended nine runs off the final over to deny Pakistan a first victory at this World Cup and stretch their losing streak at the marquee tournament to 17 matches.Ismail, who had struck twice in two balls in her fourth over at the start of Pakistan’s chase, pulled off a stunning catch running to midwicket off her own bowling on the second ball of the last over to end Pakistan’s hopes of pulling off an upset. She sent down a slower ball, and Diana Baig top-edged to midwicket. Ismail turned, ran back and took the catch over her right shoulder in a display of fine athleticism after a messy effort in the field all round. Two run-outs in the last two overs didn’t help Pakistan either.South Africa were sloppy, missed at least three run-out chances, pulled off two and can consider themselves fortunate to have got away with two points, especially after another sluggish batting performance. They were restricted to a below-par 223, thanks to Fatima Sana and Ghulam Fatima’s three-wicket hauls, and a combination of strangling seam and spin. Only two of their top six got into double-figures but both Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus made their starts count and reached half-centuries. Pakistan matched that, with two fifties of their own that kept them in the chase. Omaima Sohail’s career-best 65 and Nida Dar’s ninth ODI half-century took them close but it wasn’t enough.Ismail gave South Africa the early advantage when she had Sidra Ameen caught on the drive at wide slip and Bismah Mahroof out for a first-ball duck. Nahida Khan and Sohail rebuilt, with the highest third-wicket stand for Pakistan against South Africa, and found regular boundaries off overpitched deliveries. But, their strike rotation was limited and Pakistan’s required run rate grew to over five an over by the halfway point of their innings. That’s when Ayabonga Khaka made her first big incision. She sent down a good-length delivery that angled in from middle stump and hit Nahida low on the front pad. She was given out but reviewed only to see it confirmed that her leg stump would have been taken out.Sohail reached fifty off 83 balls and formed another strong partnership with Dar but it was not without its risks. Dar should have been run-out on 6 when she cut Chloe Tryon to Lizelle Lee at cover and was halfway down the track when the ball was stopped, but the throw came in wide. She went on to hit Pakistan’s first six of the World Cup when she cleared the front leg to mow Masabata Klaas over mid-on just as the required rate hit seven an over.Another risky run brought Sohail her career-best when Sune Luus missed a shy at the stumps and she continued to flirt with danger. Sohail took on Tazmin Brits, the former Olympic javelin-thrower’s arm – when she decided to go for a second run and her bat was grounded as throw came in. And then Sohail’s stint ended. She pulled Klaas to deep square leg where Lee took the catch.Omaima Sohail hit her third ODI half-century•AFP/Getty Images

Aliya Riaz tried to cut Marizanne Kapp three balls later but nicked off and Pakistan’s chase seemed all but over when Khaka struck again. Sana missed a flick, was struck on the front pad, and she reviewed in vain.Pakistan were unable to find the boundary for the next 4.3 overs before Dar hit Klaas over short fine leg and Sidra Nawaz cleared mid-on before slicing a Kapp slower ball to Wolvaardt at point. Baig, at No. 9, showed her worth when she took on Khaka with two aerial slogs off two balls. Then, she hit a full ball towards long-on, and wanted a second but they could not beat the throw as Khaka collected and broke the stumps. Pakistan’s challenge was finally up with another run-out when Ghulam wanted to get off strike on the penultimate ball but Trisha Chetty ran her out.It was a heartbreaking end for Pakistan, who were disciplined and energetic in the field. They got rid of Lizelle Lee, who made a return to the South African XI after a delayed arrival in New Zealand following the birth of her first child, early. In the third over, she drove away from her body, got an edge and Nawaz took an impressive catch to her right. Brits, who had opened in Lee’s absence, was in at first-drop but her struggles continued. She managed two runs off 18 balls and edged Baig behind where Nawaz pulled off a second stunner and South Africa finished their powerplay on 29 for 2.At the other end, Wolvaardt drove Sana wide of Baig at point and then heaved her over the fingertips of Dar at gully. Her signature cover drive came out off Baig and she showed off her ability on the back foot, with successive boundaries off the pull and cut to prompt the introduction of spin at both ends.Dar and Nashru Sandhu bowled eight overs in tandem and conceded only 25 runs. Dar also thought she had Luus in that period when the South African captain was given out lbw after missing a sweep. Luus, on 12 at the time, reviewed and UltraEdge showed she had hit the ball.Wolvaardt reached fifty off 75 balls when she charged down the track to hit Fatima wide of mid-on for four. She found two more boundaries in the next four balls to keep South Africa’s score ticking. At the other end, Luus was given out lbw a second time. She was on 23 when she missed a sweep but reviewed only for a second edge to be revealed. The pair took South Africa past the halfway mark, with the run rate just over three an over, but any intent to accelerate was stymied by a mid-inning collapse caused by Ghulam. Wolvaardt got a leading edge as she reached for a slower delivery and offered Ghulam a low return catch. Three balls later, Ghulam had Mignon du Preez caught at point as she tried to cut. In Ghulam’s next over, Kapp hit a full toss to deep square leg to give the legspinner a third wicket in 11 balls. She should have had a fourth when Tryon, on 2, hit her in the air to mid-on but the chance was dropped, and it proved costly.Tryon and Luus went on to put on 55 runs for the sixth wicket and took South Africa into the last ten overs. Tryon took on the role of finisher but was lucky to survive when, on 19, she edged Sana but Nawaz could not hold onto a third diving chance. Tryon went on to hit the first six of the innings, in the 43rd over, when she advanced down the track and sent Dar over long-on.Luus brought up her slowest fifty in ODIs, off 94 balls, and the second six of the innings but neither she nor Tryon could bat through the innings. South Africa lost 4 for 48 in the last seven overs but scored 66 off the last ten. Pakistan required 67 runs in their last ten overs and came close but not close enough.

BOM PRA TODO MUNDO

Avesh, Hooda star as Super Giants sink Sunrisers

Reduced to 27 for 3 after being sent in, Super Giants recovered to set a target of 170, and Sunrisers stumbled at the end of the chase

Karthik Krishnaswamy04-Apr-2022

Avesh Khan kept striking for Lucknow Super Giants•BCCI

Deepak Hooda, KL Rahul and Avesh Khan led the way as Lucknow Super Giants came back from behind with bat and ball to complete a 12-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, continuing the reversal of fortunes for teams batting first in IPL 2022.Reduced to 27 for 3 after being sent in, Super Giants recovered to set a target of 170, and Avesh took two powerplay wickets to put them firmly in front. But Sunrisers took the initiative with quickfire knocks from Rahul Tripathi and Nicholas Pooran; at one stage, they needed 27 from 17 balls with six wickets in hand. But Avesh turned it around once again with two wickets in two balls in the 18th over, and two more solid death overs from Andrew Tye and Jason Holder, playing his first game of the season, completed the job.Washington dominates powerplay
Sunrisers didn’t open the bowling with Washington Sundar in their first match against Rajasthan Royals, but they had a clear case to do so against Super Giants. One of their openers, Quinton de Kock, was a left-hander, and the other, KL Rahul, has struggled to score quickly against offspin of late, his strike rate against that style of bowling dropping from 176.66 until the end of 2019.Washington made an even bigger impact than Sunrisers may have hoped for. He dismissed de Kock by denying him room to hit inside-out, and took out another left-hander in Evin Lewis, who fell in the dangerous pursuit of sweeping every ball from a bowler who targets the stumps incessantly. With Rahul and Manish Pandey – another right-hander who starts slowly against spin – taking no chances against him either, Washington ended the powerplay with figures of 3-0-11-2.Romario Shepherd’s hard lengths took out Pandey, meanwhile, after he had conceded a six and a four earlier in the over, and Super Giants finished the powerplay at 32 for 3.A partnership of contrasts
In both 2020 and 2021, Rahul came in for plenty of criticism for his low-risk approach in the powerplay and middle overs, which brought him plenty of runs but also left the feeling that his franchise at the time, Punjab Kings, frequently ended up with lower-than-ideal totals even when they didn’t lose too many wickets. That approach was more understandable in this game, given the situation Super Giants got themselves into.At the other end, Hooda adopted a different approach, after taking 12 balls to get his eye in. The rapid Umran Malik bore the brunt of the punishment, with three fours and a six pinging off Hooda’s bat. It wasn’t that Malik bowled particularly badly: Hooda played some exceptional shots off him, including an open-faced slice to steer a near-yorker past backward point and a whipped six off a short ball angled in to tuck him up for room. There was also a ramped six that the leaping third man fielder – stationed fine for exactly that shot – got a hand to but couldn’t grab hold of.Rahul also hit two fours off Malik, and his second and third overs – the 10th and 14th of Super Giants’ innings – went for a combined 36. Even with Sunrisers’ other bowlers doing decently through this phase, Super Giants’ recovery was firmly on track.Bhuvneshwar and Natarajan nail the yorkers
Malik’s poor night forced Sunrisers into using Washington’s fourth over – which they probably weren’t planning to bowl – in the 17th over. Rahul and Ayush Badoni – who replaced Hooda following his dismissal in the 16th over – took it for 17.Badoni and Holder then took 17 off Shepherd in the 20th over, but in between, Bhuvneshwar and T Natarajan ensured Sunrisers wouldn’t be chasing too steep a target, with expert use of the yorker – if they erred, they sent down low full-tosses rather than half-volleys, and they always followed the batters’ movements with their line, ensuring they seldom got room to free their arms. Super Giants only took a combined 15 runs off the 18th and 19th overs, and lost Rahul and Krunal Pandya in the process.Avesh, part one
Sunrisers began their chase solidly enough, getting to 21 for no loss after three overs, with Kane Williamson picking up an eye-catching six behind the wicket with a scoop over the keeper off Holder in the third over. But just when Williamson’s form was beginning to look ominous – he punched Avesh to the cover point boundary at the start of the fourth over – Avesh got him out, another attempted lap over short fine leg ending up in the hands of the fielder.Abhishek Sharma, the other opener, fell in Avesh’s next over, miscuing an attempted big hit off a slower ball, and Sunrisers ended the powerplay at 40 for 2.KL Rahul and Deepak Hooda put up a half-century stand for the fourth wicket•BCCI

One way, then the other, and back
The middle overs seesawed this way and that. Rahul Tripathi clattered 44 off 30, including taking three fours off the eighth over, delivered by Andrew Tye – the highlight a deft ramp over the keeper off a rising short ball. But Krunal took both him and Aiden Markram out, leaving Sunrisers needing 75 off 41 with six wickets in hand and two new batters at the crease.Pooran began not just slowly but also most unconvincingly, as Ravi Bishnoi beat his outside edge three times in four balls with his wrong’un allied to his across-the-left-hander angle. But he muscled Krunal for a leg-side six in the 14th over and hit Holder for two fours in the 15th, before ending the 16th with a glorious drive to bisect extra-cover and long-off, off Bishnoi, to leave Sunrisers needing 41 off 24. The match was turning once again.Avesh, part two
Tye’s changes of pace and ability to land the ball wide of the left-handers’ hitting arc ensured he only conceded eight runs in the 17th over, with its one boundary coming via a lofted drive from Washington. Then, with Sunrisers needing 33 from 18, Pooran miscued a pull off Avesh only for the ball to carry all the way for six. The luck turned two balls later, as Pooran hit a full-toss straight into long-off’s hands. Then Avesh nicked off Abdul Samad first ball, delivering another blow to Sunrisers’ chances, before closing out the over with two dots and a wide, backing the wide line outside off to Shepherd.Tye delivered another superb over in the 19th, but just when Sunrisers seemed to be slipping out of the contest with 22 required off 8, an attempted yorker turned into a full-toss that Shepherd launched for a straight six.Sixteen of the last over was possible, though difficult. And it proved even more difficult thanks to the new rule regarding batters crossing over. Looking to hit the first ball for six, Washington was caught on the long-on boundary. Where Shepherd may have taken strike next ball in previous seasons, he now had to watch Bhuvneshwar from the other end.Two singles followed, before Bhuvneshwar holed out. Again, Shepherd couldn’t take strike, and with two sixes needed just to tie the game, the match was all but over.

He lost every single duel: Spurs really need to see more from 6/10 star

Tottenham needed a win, they needed a massive win to really get Ange Postecoglou back in the good books of supporters.

Make no mistake about it, this has been a rough period for Spurs who weren’t threatening to gift their fans many Christmas presents until they arrived on the south coast to face Southampton at St Mary’s.

Despite the Saints’ rocky form, this was not a match to take lightly considering the Lilywhites have already tasted defeat to Crystal Palace and Ipswich this season.

Thankfully for Postecoglou’s men, they had no trouble whatsoever dismantling Southampton who subsequently sacked manager Russell Martin just hours after the full-time whistle.

Had Spurs lost then it’s likely the Australian coach will have been facing questions about the security of his own managerial position.

Therefore, he has Heung-min Son, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison and Pape Sarr to thank for a remarkable 5-0 victory.

Tottenham’s attacking numbers against Southampton

Seeing Spurs take an opposition to the cleaners isn’t very surprising.

Under Postecoglou, the north Londoners have been a side to play high-risk entertaining football. They flood bodies forward with great regularity but their high line often leaves them exposed to a counter attack.

Well, even with a defensive duo of Radu Dragusin and teenager Archie Gray, they went through the 90 minutes relatively untested.

That was largely thanks to the players in front of them for such a splendid performance. Maddison was one of the stars of the show, scoring twice and creating two key passes before being withdrawn in the 77th minute.

Son – who was taken off at the break – also starred for the visitors, needing just 45 minutes to score a goal and supply two assists.

It was a ruthless display from Postecoglou’s men who found themselves a goal to the good inside the opening minute. It got better with each passing minute and before you knew it (25 minutes in to be precise), Sarr rolled home to make it 4-0.

That being said, for all the good things we’re seeing about Tottenham’s attack, they do need to start seeing more from mega-money summer signing, Dominic Solanke.

Performance in Numbers

Solanke’s performance in numbers against Southampton

With Harry Kane gone, Spurs were left to rue not signing a striker in the summer of 2023.

Richarlison struggled to stay fit and as a result, it meant that Son played a lot of football as the focal point of the attack.

Subsequently, the addition of a centre forward in the summer of 2024 was an absolute necessity. They went out and signed Solanke from Bournemouth with the English talent setting Daniel Levy and Co back around £65m.

Since then it hasn’t all been plain sailing for the former Cherries striker who isn’t just finding goals hard to come by, but is finding actually getting general goalscoring chances troublesome.

The big-money addition initially started off well by registering three goal involvements in his first five league outings. Since then, he has scored just three times in Tottenham’s last nine matches, and once in his last seven.

While Solanke’s role in this Spurs team is about a lot more than just scoring goals – bringing others into play and helping the wide players thrive in behind – Postecoglou does need to see him involved in the penalty box more often.

What rather summed up his season so far was the game with Southampton where despite his team scoring a handful, the Englishman never really got in the game and was isolated out of proceedings.

Handed a 6/10 player rating by the Standard, it was hardly a surprise considering he had just 13 touches of the ball and completed five passes all night.

Postecoglou’s men were rampant in attack but Solanke was so ineffective that he was hauled off on 82 minutes having yet to win a single duel.

Fortunately for the 27-year-old the rest of his colleagues were on fire, helping Spurs to their biggest win of the campaign to date.

Lopetegui must drop 5/10 West Ham star who lost the ball 11 times

Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham drew 1-1 with Bournemouth, with late drama between the sides leading to a thrilling end on Monday evening.

The Spanish coach clearly tweaked his game plan against the Cherries in order to avoid their pressing traps, playing slightly more direct, looking to miss out the midfield pivot and win second balls closer to the box.

A late penalty call for a controversial handball saw the Hammers take a 1-0 lead in the 87th minute through Lucas Paqueta. But just three minutes later, Enes Unal smashed the equaliser home with a wonderful freekick.

West Ham remain 14th in the Premier League despite picking up four points in their last two games, and whilst results have picked up in their last few fixtures, the performances have still left a lot to be desired.

West Ham's best performers vs Bournemouth

Having said that, against Bournemouth, there were a few good performances, one of which was the performance of goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, making eight saves, six of them coming from inside the box.

Another top performer was the goalscorer, Paqueta, who not only slotted away the penalty, but also made three key passes, took three shots (one on target), and had 51 touches.

Defender Max Kilman was another performance worth mentioning, making five blocks, three tackles, winning three of his five ground duels, winning five of his seven aerial duels, and making six of his 13 long balls attempted.

But alongside these good performances, there was a poor one that needs to be addressed, as Lopetegui now has a decision to make on whether to drop this man or not.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Edson Alvarez's performance v Bournemouth

Edson Alvarez has made 14 appearances this season, receiving four yellow cards and two red cards in 843 minutes played. The Mexican midfielder was given a 5/10 match rating for his performance by The Standard, with a few poor mistakes bringing his score down on Monday evening.

The 27-year-old played 75 minutes against the Cherries, losing possession 11 times, failing both of his long ball attempts and completing just 76% of his passes (32/42).

Alvarez was tasked with dropping between the two central defenders on the ball for West Ham, as they looked to bypass the middle of the pitch, playing long balls into the front line, and winning second balls. However, the Mexico international put his side under pressure at times, losing the ball 11 times, and missing both of those long ball attempts.

In terms of winning his duels, he did win four out of six both ground and aerial, but when he was the main source of protection in front of the defensive line, the fact he only competed in six duels in his 75 minutes, is a different problem of its own, which can again begin to highlight some slight mobility issues in the West Ham midfield.

Since joining the club last summer, with the aim of replacing Declan Rice, the 27-year-old defensive midfielder has struggled to provide consistency in the middle of the park for the Hammers, and now Lopetegui has a big decision on his hands regarding his place in the team, especially as his job is far from secure.

Contudo, a defesa cruz-maltina voltou a falhar.

The start of the Durban Test was delayed after the sightscreens at both ends malfunctioned before a ball was bowled. The match eventually began at 10:35am, 35 minutes after the scheduled start. Play began from the Umgeni End at Kingsmead, after the groundstaff put together white cloths to cover up the faulty electronic screens. It looked innocuous enough at the beginning when Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee waited for the issue to be sorted out at the Old Fort End. But black spots from the background kept showing through the gauzy material that the groundstaff were using to cover up the screen. The players left the ground shortly afterwards, and the broadcasters also cut the live feed while the groundstaff tried to solve the problem. This is the first Test in Durban since February 2019, when Sri Lanka pulled off a one-wicket win over the hosts. South Africa are fielding a depleted side this time with eight of their first-choice players choosing to play the IPL rather than this series.Bangladesh also endured a setback on the first morning when Tamim Iqbal and Shoriful Islam pulled up with ailments. The visitors are vying for their first positive result in South Africa having lost all six of their Tests in the country since their first visit in 2002.
