Erik ten Hag lives to fight another day. With Thomas Tuchel having been named as the surprise successor to Gareth Southgate for England, the Manchester United boss has at least been able to shake off one potential challenger to his ‘throne’ at Old Trafford.

The former Ajax man will, however, come up against another possible usurper this weekend, with Thomas Frank – who has been named among the list of candidates to replace Ten Hag – set to be in the opposing dugout as Brentford travel to the Theatre of Dreams.

Currently the man responsible for the Red Devils’ worst-ever start to a Premier League season, the 54-year-old can ill afford another slow start on Saturday – not least against a side who have netted inside the first minute on three occasions already this term.

As was the case in 2023/24, however, Ten Hag’s task has been made all the more difficult due to the diminishing options at his disposal, with injuries yet again hampering any hopes of mounting a serious charge on the top four…

The teenage playmaker – who has started every Premier League game this season – is set to be unavailable for a few weeks due to a muscle injury, leaving Ten Hag with a dilemma to solve in the centre of the park.

Prior to lining up together away at Porto prior to the international break, that ageing triumvirate hadn’t lined up together from the start for almost 13 months. As The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell stated, that display in Portugal showcased the “reasons for that”.

The man who lined up alongside Mainoo in the 2022 FA Youth Cup triumph, Gore has earned rave reviews throughout his time in the academy ranks, with talent scout Jacek Kulig hailing him as “one of the most interesting players of his generation in England”.

Only two first-team appearances have come his way so far, although the youngster was notably named on the bench for United’s trip to Porto, showcasing a sign of how highly regarded he is by the senior coaching staff.

Those in the academy too, have also lavished him with praise in the recent past, with youth coach Mark Dempsey describing him as a “proper footballer” and a “leader”, while also stating that he’s the type of player who can “get fans of their seats”.

At a time where United – who have scored the second fewest goals in the division – are starving supporters of excitement, the inclusion of a player like Gore could well be what is needed to help lift spirits.

Of course, it would be a bold call from Ten Hag, but with his future still on the line, he’d be better off falling on his sword, rather than playing it safe.

Isso porque alguns atletas, que estavam há várias semanas afastados, aparentavam estar evoluindo. Um dos principais exemplos foi Igor Vinícius.

Nesta sexta-feira (3), depois de uma semana inteira de evoluções, o jogador voltou a sentir dor. Mas agora a situação parece pior ainda: terá que passar por cirurgia para resolver este problema no púbis. Mas um ponto chama atenção. Esta não é a primeira vez que o departamento médico ‘libera’ um jogador e ele retorna com um quadro pior.

Ao tratar de casos que se tornaram cirúrgicos, parece estar se tornando algo frequente. No último ano, aconteceu parecido com Diego Costa. Assim como Igor Vinícius, era titular absoluto no setor defensivo tricolor.

A última vez que o zagueiro entrou em campo foi na final da Copa Sul-Americana, contra o Independiente Del Valle, em outubro. Desde então, foi apresentado um quadro de tendinite no joelho. A ideia era um tratamento conservador, uma vez que até então não aparentava ser nada grave. Mas não foi bem assim.

Em dezembro, precisou passar por um procedimento cirúrgico, para a retirada de fragmento ósseo do joelho esquerdo. Até o momento, não retornou. São quase cinco meses afastado. Mas até a decisão da cirurgia ser tomada, foram dois meses optando por um tratamento convencional.

Luan também é outro exemplo. Em outubro de 2021, sofreu uma lesão séria na coxa. No caso, uma avulsão tendínea, quando o músculo se desloca do osso. A priori, era esperado que ficasse um mês afastado.

Optando também por um tratamento sem cirurgia, demorou para voltar. O jogador só retornou aos gramados em março do último ano. Parecia que tudo estava ocorrendo da forma esperada, que estava recuperado.

Entretanto, em junho entrou contra o América-MG e ficou somente 22 minutos em campo. O motivo? Sentiu fortes dores na coxa, mais uma vez, e deixou o gramado de maca e chorando. Desta vez não houve escapatória. Precisou passar por cirurgia. Retornou em setembro do último ano, após um tratamento em tempo ‘recorde’.

Estes foram alguns exemplos de situações que viraram casos cirúrgicos. Mas constantemente o departamento médico tem enfrentado problemas relacionados à recorrência de lesões. No último ano, um dos mais comentados foi Nikão.

Na temporada passada, chegou como um dos reforços mais ‘estrelados’ e esperados do Tricolor. Porém, perdeu praticamente metade dos jogos da temporada.

A primeira lesão foi constada em abril, com um quadro de trauma no tornozelo. Ficou fora por cinco partidas. No mês seguinte, voltou a sentir dores na região. Perdeu mais 14 partidas. Em agosto, o tornozelo deixou de ser problema e aí lesionou a coxa, também com uma avulsão no músculo adutor.

A última vez que jogou pelo Tricolor foi justamente em agosto, contra o Fortaleza – onde ficou três minutos em campo e se machucou. Nesta temporada, assinou com o Cruzeiro. Já disputou cinco partidas pela equipe mineira e marcou dois gols.

Na última temporada, Jandrei foi outro exemplo. Depois da saída de Tiago Volpi, o goleiro havia assumido a posição de titular. Em julho, portanto, contra o Fluminense, levou uma pancada nas costas e deixou o gramado sentindo dores. Nos primeiros exames realizados, não foram constatados nenhum trauma ou lesão. Assim, ficou em tratamento no Reffis e voltou a campo após algumas semanas, contra o América-MG.

Porém, no final de julho, retornou ao departamento médico mais uma vez. Agora, com uma fratura na região lombar diagnosticada. Algo que antes não havia sido relatado.

Se recuperou e voltou a ser relacionado um mês depois, em agosto. Entretanto, nunca mais retornou ao posto de titular. Na época, Felipe Alves foi contratado para substituir e tomou a posição. Neste ano, Rafael chegou e assumiu todas as partidas até então.

Alisson, no último ano, também sofreu com o histórico de lesões. No caso, uma entorse no joelho o tirou de campo por praticamente 50 dias. Pouco tempo depois, apresentou um quadro de edema na coxa, que o afastou por dois meses.

Recentemente, outro caso que também está sendo comentado no assunto ‘lesões do São Paulo’ é a recuperação de Arboleda.

Ano passado, perdeu boa parte da temporada após sofrer uma lesão dupla no tornozelo. Além de uma fratura, rompeu os ligamentos e teve que passar por cirurgia em junho. Retornou ao São Paulo somente este ano. De prontidão, voltou para a titularidade na zaga. Entretanto, virou desfalque mais uma vez. Agora, com um quadro de tendinite no joelho e sem previsão de retorno – que ao que tudo indicava, já devia ter acontecido. A última vez que o equatoriano jogou foi contra o Corinthians, no dia 29 de janeiro.

Calleri vai insistir no erro?

Diante a todas estas recorrências de lesões e problemas com ‘tratamentos convencionais’, o caso Igor Vinícius pode acender um alerta. Será que vale a pena Calleri arriscar este método conservador para tratar seu tornozelo sabendo as péssimas experiências dos companheiros?

Nesta temporada, o camisa 9 começou a apresentar um quadro de dores no tornozelo. Ficou três jogos fora, mas como o LANCE! apurou, mesmo liberado com dores, se sacrificou e retornou aos gramados.

Exames realizados constataram que a lesão era mais grave do que imaginava. Diante a isso, duas opções: uma cirurgia que poderia afastá-lo por sete meses ou tentar um método mais conservador – que se desse certo, o tiraria de campo por dois.

Pelo lado do estafe são-paulino, o desejo era por uma operação. Para ajudar na decisão, especialistas em lesões de tornozelo foram consultados e ajudarão no tratamento. Porém, foi escolhido não fazer a cirurgia.

Se der certo, ótimo. Mas como visto anteriormente, dado o histórico de problemas parecidos no departamento médico, talvez seja ‘persistir no erro’.

The Gers have had a poor start to the Scottish Premiership season, already losing three of their opening 10 top flight fixtures, finding themselves nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen.

As a result, pressure has been building on Clement, although Rangers did get past Motherwell in the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup on the weekend to set up a tie final with Celtic.

The latest on Clement’s future at Rangers is that he still appears to have the support of the board, according to sources close to the manager in Belgium.

Clement did admit before that win that he hasn’t had any conversations with interim chairman John Gilligan or other Ibrox directors regarding his future.

“I didn’t have discussions about that. In the last couple of weeks they’ve been really busy with a lot of other things in the club.

“I’m very confident about that because that was also the really clear message to step in a story for a longer term. They knew everything about the numbers, about what was necessary and I don’t want to repeat all these things.

“I think I said it enough. And what consequences it can have. and it’s about small margins like last season, taking those margins and making it better, better again.”

There have been claims on potential replacements for Clement at Rangers, one of which is former manager Steven Gerrard, with Ally McCoist even making a suggestion live on air about a return to Scotland for the 4-3-3 style boss.

Gerrard is currently under pressure in charge of Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia, but a return to Glasgow where he won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers have been mooted.

One player who was a part of that squad was Scott Arfield, and the midfielder, speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club (4 November), relayed by Ibrox News, addressed the possibility of Gerrard returning to Rangers, admitting he “would love to see it”.

“I would love to see it. I wouldn’t like to see Philippe Clement lose his job because he obviously really cares about it. Every interview, every time he speaks, he speaks so passionately.

“But knowing Steven Gerrard, I would love to see him come back. Some people say never go back to what was amazing but I think with an icon and a man of that profile, once they get back in the hot seat at Rangers, then I think it’s going to be extremely difficult to say no to that.”

Para o treinador português, o comparecimento ao estádio é o que a torcida do Palmeiras pode fazer para o elenco na busca pelos objetivos maiores. Isak is scoring once again, coming up trumps and leaving the Toon faithful cavorting after crucial goals against two of London’s finest outfits. He was always going to find his feet, and now Howe’s side can kick on and make headway in the Premier League.

Newcastle signed Real Sociedad’s talented striker in a deal worth £63m, a club record, in 2022, but he suffered an injury-hit debut year that provided him with only 17 starts in the top flight, albeit posting a respectable ten-goal haul.

Last term, however, Isak came alive. Featuring 40 times across all competitions, he scored 25 goals and put in performances that led pundit Harry Redknapp to declare last year: “I’m not sure if there’s a better player in the country right now.”

There was some noise around the 25-year-old’s future at St. James’ Park across the summer months, but he is still plying his trade under Howe’s wing and there are tentative hopes that he will pen a new contract.

Goals in recent matches have spoken once more of the player’s irreplaceable quality in black and white, with his slow start to the campaign swiftly shaped into something bearing a respectable return of four goals and an assist across ten matches in all competitions.

Moreover, he’s hardly just a target man. As per FBref, Isak ranks among the top 18% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 8% for progressive carries and the top 16% for successful take-ons per 90. Such metrics emphasise his dynamic and athletic style of play.

Signing a player like Jarrod Bowen really would complete Newcastle’s frontline, not only balancing the left flank, where Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes reside, with a player of high-class quality but finally completing the fluency that could see Isak reach monstrous new heights.

As per TEAMtalk, Newcastle remain hot on the trail of the West Ham United captain, having been keeping tabs on the 27-year-old for a while.

The report suggests that the Magpies could make a blockbuster move and are ‘considering a bid’ for the former Hull City man.

West Ham are toiling under Julen Lopetegui and Bowen has not yet hit his stride, though the winger is proven in the Premier League and was the focal point of David Moyes’ illustrious tenure in east London.

Getting this one over the line won’t be easy. West Ham value Bowen at £100m – as per previous reports from the summer – and given that he signed a long-term contract last year, it is likely that it will take a ‘huge bid’ from PIF and co for the Hammers to even entertain a sale.

That would ensure it would likely prove a record move for those at St James’, surpassing the £63m that was spent on that man Isak back in 2022.

Bowen really would be the perfect signing for Newcastle in 2025, not least because he might blend with the club’s number nine, and restore Newcastle’s attack to its maximum level.

Miguel Almiron has played for Newcastle for a long time, and Jacob Murphy is certainly an underrated option within Howe’s squad, but neither carries that potent threat that the Hammers skipper would bring to the table.

Bowen’s West Ham career is a thing to behold. The east Londoners signed Hull City’s prized forward in January 2020 for a fee totalling £22m, and he has since gone on to score 64 goals and supply 41 assists across 214 appearances, instrumental in winning the Conference League and thriving across multiple continental campaigns.

His dual-wielded positional value has even seen him be gushed over by opponents, with Brentford manager Thomas Frank describing the England star as “unplayable” after he thumped a hat-trick past the Bees in the Premier League last year.

Could it be that Bowen would bring to Newcastle the kind of goalscoring quality that would unburden Isak with the weight of his responsibility? The Sweden international is a brilliant player, but Gordon aside, there is a distinct lack of prolificness.

Barnes is a terrific goalscorer, but he too is best on the left flank. Bowen, a right winger, would obviously earn regular match action for Howe’s side and has the requisite experience in Europe to actually make all the difference across the coming years.

Who knows, he might even convince Isak to stay on, for a frontline consisting of Gordon, Isak and he would surely hold the properties required to have a significant impact on the narrative at the top of the table and across cup competitions, year in, year out.

With a sharp playmaking edge too, creating 16 big chances in the Premier League since the start of last season, Bowen really could be the perfect partner for a machine-like centre-forward in Isak.

Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of Bangladesh’s first Test against Pakistan in Chattogram, which begins on Friday.
