Northamptonshire Steelbacks slipped to a fourth straight defeat as Derbyshire Falcons ended a two-game losing streak with a five-wicket victory in the North Group match at Derby.A disciplined Derbyshire performance with the ball restricted Northamptonshire to 141 for 8 and the Falcons, led by an unbeaten 48 from Leus du Plooy and 44 from Matt Critchley, eased home on 143 for 5 with 10 balls to spare.Ricardo Vasconcelos scored 38 and Graeme White made 37 from 24 balls but Northamptonshire were restricted by George Scrimshaw, 1 for 13 from four overs and Conor McKerr, 2 for 23.Related

After losing 7 for 17 in their previous game, the Steelbacks ran into more problems, with both openers dismissed in the first two overs. On a slow, used pitch, Richard Levi chipped Logan van Beek to midwicket and Adam Rossington was caught behind pulling Conor McKerr.Vasconcelos and Wayne Parnell repaired the damage until the Falcons struck again in the final over of the powerplay. Parnell lost his middle stump aiming a big drive at Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Rob Keogh steered the next ball to slip. The slide continued when Saif Zaib missed a sweep at Critchley and although Mohammad Nabi – in his first appearance of the season after quarantining – dispatched the same bowler for two sixes, the Falcons quickly reasserted control.Fynn Hudson-Prentice picked up two wickets•Getty Images

Nabi was caught at deep midwicket attempting a third and Vasconcelos skied a pull at George Scrimshaw to reduce Northamptonshire to 81 for 7 in the 14th over.White and Tom Taylor got their side to a respectable total by taking 41 from the last three overs with both batsmen driving Critchley for six before White hit Hudson-Prentice for three consecutive fours.Northamptonshire had to take early wickets and Ben Sanderson delivered by bowling Harry Came in the second over. Billy Godleman drove Nabi for six before being run out four balls later but the pressure was eased when 17 came from Nathan Buck’s first over.Parnell responded by removing Luis Reece and conceding only two from the next over but du Plooy provided momentum by pulling Sanderson for six to leave the Falcons needing 62 off the last 10 overs.Critchley took Derbyshire to within 14 of victory before he skied Taylor to mid on and although Hudson-Prentice was run out, du Plooy sealed victory in style with his third six.

Derby have struck gold on star who’s worth more than Mendez-Laing & Cashin

Derby County have adjusted to life back in the Championship rather well, picking up two victories from their four league games to date to not be dangerously close to the relegation drop-zone.

A number of new recruits have settled in swimmingly too, with Kayden Jackson the pick of the bunch from the fresh faces that have joined the building this summer, having picked up two goals and an assist from his four individual contests in the second tier.

Away from the whole host of new purchases strengthening Paul Warne’s men already, both Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Eiran Cashin – who represent the old guard from last campaign’s promotion heroics – have also not looked out of their depth moving up a league.

Mendez-Laing and Cashin's stats so far this season

It won’t come as a shock to any Derby supporter that both Mendez-Laing and Cashin remain as key names on Warne’s team sheet, with both the Rams number 11 and the Rams number six only missing one game between them so far in league action.

Mendez-Laing would start this campaign in lightning-quick fashion, helping himself to two assists on the opening day to prove he still has what it takes to perform in the second tier, even as his employers fell to a disappointing 4-2 defeat.

Derby County defenderEiran Cashin.

Cashin might well have been in the heart of defence for that crushing loss at Ewood Park, but he has redeemed himself since, with the 22-year-old very much playing his part in the Rams keeping back-to-back home clean sheets against Middlesbrough and Bristol City recently, as two home wins were also collected.

The one-time Brighton and Hove Albion target would complete three tackles and win five duels versus the Robins, which would see his side then grow in confidence going forward knowing that the defence behind them was unlikely to be breached, with three goals then soaring in.

Another of Warne’s summer buys in Kenzo Goudmijn would open the scoring against Liam Manning’s men, with the Dutchman enjoying a wonderful start to life in Derbyshire too, which has seen his transfer value already rocket up.

Goudmijn's transfer value in 2024

Purchased for a reasonable £690k from Eredivisie titans AZ Alkmaar back in July, Warne would admit at the time that the Rams sealing a deal for such a cut-price was a “no brainer”.

Goudmijn would help himself to seven goals and 11 assists as a promising young talent in the U21 structure at Alkmaar before spreading his wings to move to England, after 20 first-team appearances also came his way for the Dutch side.

Constantly peppering Max O’Leary’s net with five shots registered in total against the Robins, Goudmijn looked very lively in the middle of the park alongside David Ozoh and Ebou Adams, as Derby’s left-field business picking up the 22-year-old from the Netherlands looks to be paying off.

His value has already increased to around the £2.3m mark as a result, according to Football Transfers, with Mendez-Laing and Cashin surprisingly worth less now.

Warne will know he can continue to rely on the stellar first-team pair moving forward regardless, as they were key parts of the jigsaw that saw the Rams finally return back to the Championship last season, even as their values come in at a lesser £759k and £1.4m respectively.

Already, it seems as if Warne has a squad that is capable of staying put in the second tier, but the many twists and turns to come in the division will be challenging all the same for the Rams.

Tottenham offered chance to sign £162k-per-week "champion" just days ago

Tottenham Hotspur were apparently offered the chance to sign a prestigious player over the weekend, as the Lilywhites unfortunately tasted defeat in the North London derby.

Tottenham lose to Arsenal as Postecoglou bemoans set pieces

Ange Postecoglou was forced to defend his set-piece policy yet again after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at home to bitter rivals Arsenal, with Gunners defender Gabriel Magalhaes nodding in the only goal of the game from a corner.

"Miles off it" – Jamie O'Hara slams £50m Tottenham star after Arsenal loss

He’s some way off the pace right now.

Spurs dictated overall play with the majority of possession and chances created at home, as they looked to upset a weakened Arsenal team who were without club captain Martin Odegaard, summer signing Riccardo Calafiori, Spain star Mikel Merino, Declan Rice and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

However, a resolute Arsenal side did their defensive duties and made Tottenham pay for their lack of cutting edge, with Gabriel rising above everyone else to thump a header past Guglielmo Vicario from close range.

It was an avoidable goal from Postecoglou’s perspective, who stuck up for his philosophy on defending dead balls when quizzed by the media.

“I know for some reason people think I don’t care about set-pieces, and it’s a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages. I understand that,” said Postecoglou on Arsenal’s winner from a corner.

“Like I said, we work on them all the time, like we do with every other team. You know that they’re a threat. As I said, for the most part we handled them really well today, but we switched off in one and we paid a price. You learn from that and you move on.

“It is what it is. It’s my burden to carry and I’m happy to do that. Like I’ve always said, for me there’s a bigger picture that’s at play here that’s much more important than the finer details of us getting to where we want to.

“For us, the way forward is to, as I said, try and turn the football we’re playing now into something meaningful. We’re a team that’s progressing in many areas. With all that sort of progress, there’s always kind of new challenges and new things that you need to overcome.”

Gabriel’s winner was the 10th time Tottenham have conceded a dead-ball goal under Postecoglou, and that is something the Australian will be very eager to change. Winger Brennan Johnson was also criticised for his display against Arsenal, so it appears there are a few conundrums for Spurs’ head coach ahead of their next matches against Coventry City in the EFL Cup and Brentford this weekend.

Tottenham offered chance to sign Adrien Rabiot just days ago

Over the weekend, Tottenham’s disappointing defeat to Arsenal wasn’t the only thing happening in north London, as it is claimed that former Juventus and PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot approached the club over a free transfer too.

That is according to The Boot Room, who claim that Rabiot was offered to Spurs via his representatives, before the Frenchman opted to return to his homeland with Roberto De Zerbi’s Marseille.

Adrien Rabiot for Juventus

The 29-year-old, who featured for France at Euro 2024, has finally ended the search for his new club by putting pen to paper on a rumoured £162,000-per-week contract with the Ligue 1 side. Despite many links to the Premier League, Rabiot won’t be making an English move this season, despite his credentials.

“He is a complete player, I have rarely seen someone so strong both physically and technically,” said ex-Juve boss Andrea Pirlo in 2020. “He doesn’t even know the potential for improvement he can have, and we work on the mental side of things to make him understand that he is a champion. He is improving game after game.”

Mominul Haque admits Bangladesh 'got away' thanks to long batting line-up

“After looking at the pitch, I expected it to turn on the fourth or fifth day, which is why I decided to bat first”

Bangladesh needed eight batters to deal with the first day pitch in Harare, according to their captain Mominul Haque. The visitors eventually won the Test by 220 runs against Zimbabwe, but despite an unusually long batting line-up, they still ran into trouble on the first day, slipping to 132 for 6.Mahmudullah, batting at No 8, led the fightback with an unbeaten 150, and put up partnerships of 138 and 191 runs for the seventh and ninth wickets with Liton Das and Taskin Ahmed, respectively. Das and Ahmed both made career-best scores as Bangladesh finished on 468 in the first innings.Related

Mahmudullah shines in Test swansong as Taskin, Miraz hand Bangladesh big win in Harare

“After looking at the pitch, I expected it to turn on the fourth or fifth day, which is why I decided to bat first,” Haque said. “We had belief that our spinners could take advantage of those conditions. It would have been difficult to make a combination in these conditions without Shakib . Looking at the wicket, I thought that some of us might struggle but with a long batting line-up, we could get away from it.”Haque hailed the contributions of Mahmudullah, Das and Ahmed, saying that their efforts made batting very easy for Shadman Islam and Najmul Hossain Shanto in the second innings.”Riyad s partnership with Liton was critical as we were 132-6 at that stage. Riyad played an outstanding innings. Taskin’s 75 was also important to win this Test match.”Staying ahead in the first innings keeps you in the game for long. Shanto and Shadman played well in the second innings without pressure, which is how it should be. I think they utilised the situation very well by batting normally,” he said. The long batting line-up also meant that Bangladesh had only four frontline bowlers in the XI. This, despite Shakib being in the side and Mehidy Hasan Miraz having improved his batting. The team management’s decision to drop Abu Jayed was also called into question.Ebadot Hossain was picked in his place, despite the bowler having taken only seven wickets at an average of 90.71 in seven Tests prior to Harare. Jayed averages 35.13 in 12 Tests, and is generally considered an improved bowler in all conditions. This was the first overseas Test he missed since his debut in 2018.”It was a flat and slow wicket, we preferred a faster bowler like Ebadot. So we decided to leave out Rahi but he is not out for good,” Haque said, while also explaining that they had a hard time dislodging the Zimbabwe batters in the match because the pitch was flat and slow from the second day.”The wicket has been flat since the second day of this Test. We would have leaked runs if we went too hard for wickets. I had to contain the runs and we needed time to bowl them out. More runs would have helped them, not us. One has to take a bit of time to set up batsmen to get them out. I think the bowlers did very well,” he said.Still, it was a welcome win for Bangladesh after losing three of the four Tests this year. Haque said that it would help them to build up towards the second cycle of the World Test Championship, which for Bangladesh begins after the T20 World Cup.”This Test win will build confidence in everyone ahead of the World Test Championship. They would know their role better. We are trying to improve small processes, rather than plan big.”

Report: "Amazing" manager could be in the frame to replace Dyche at Everton

An “amazing” Champions League manager may well be an option to replace Sean Dyche at Everton, should he be sacked in the near future.

Everton drop more points at Leicester

The Blues were back in Premier League action on Saturday afternoon, making the trip to Leicester City and looking to get their first points of the season.

While they did at least manage a 1-1 draw at the King Power Stadium, there was a tinge of disappointment at the result, considering they took the lead through an Iliman Ndiaye goal in the 12th minute.

Everton couldn’t hold out, however, and Stephy Mavididi equalised with time running out, ensuring that Dyche and his players had to return to Merseyside with only a point to show for their efforts.

It was far from a disastrous result for the Blues, not least because it ended a run of four straight defeats in the league, but it didn’t do a huge amount in terms of taking the pressure off Dyche, who has been coming under pressure to save his job recently.

Champions League manager in frame to replace Dyche

According to the i, former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic could be seen as an option to replace Dyche at Everton in the near future. The 41-year-old is thought to be keen on managing in the Premier League.

He isn’t the only name mentioned, however, with David Moyes and Graham Potter also in the mix, with a potential return to Goodison Park lined up for the former.

Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic

Terzic could be an exciting appointment for Everton, considering he was only recently managing in the Champions League final, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid back in June.

There is no shame in that result, of course, and he deserves huge praise for reaching the biggest game in club football, with Jose Mourinho having nice things to say about him after the game:

“Time is not going to help you. It’s going to be very hard for the rest of your career, for the rest of your life, but you have to be very proud of the work you did because it was amazing. As a coach you couldn’t do more, you can’t put the ball in the back of the net. The coach can organise, can give mentality, can give confidence, and he did all that.”

It does look as though Dyche still just about has the support of the board, despite such a grim start to the season, but there is no question that more defeats in the coming weeks could prove to be the final straw.

There could be sense in bringing back Moyes, who may steer them away from the threat of relegation, while Potter is also a gifted manager, but Terzic could stand out as the most eye-catching and bold option.

Talks held: Everton nearly hired a “genius” in 2023, they got Dyche instead

The Blues have started the season in wretched form…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 20, 2024

He is known for adopting an attack-minded 4-3-3 formation, which would surely appeal to Everton supporters, and his recent brilliance speaks for itself, with very few expecting Dortmund to be in the Champions League final last season.

Defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders to face Guyana Amazon Warriors in CPL 2021 opener

The tournament will be played entirely in a double-header format, with two triple-headers before the semi-finals

The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will be held between August 26 and September 15, with all 33 games to be played at Warner Park in St Kitts and Nevis, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed. Last month, ESPNcricinfo had reported that CWI and the BCCI had reached an agreement for these dates following discussions about a potential clash with the second half of the IPL in September, and the consequent unavailability of West Indies’ players in the IPL, as well as staff and franchise owners who are involved in both tournaments. The CPL was originally scheduled to start on August 28, and end on September 19, but that changed after the BCCI began talks with CWI and the CPL, immediately after it identified the September-October window for wrapping up the remainder of the postponed 2021 IPL.

The tournament will now be played entirely in a double-header format, and begins with a 10am EST game between Guyana Amazon Warriors and defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders, followed by a 7pm game between Barbados Tridents and St Kitts & Nevis Patriots. There will be breaks on August 30, September 3, 6 and 10, before the league stage finishes with triple-headers on September 11 and 12. The semi-finals and final will take place on September 14 and 15 respectively.Related

CPL 2021 schedule tweaked to avoid clash with remainder of IPL season

All the games will be played in just under three weeks. The challenge for both CWI and the CPL is that there aren’t many free days in a packed home season. West Indies are currently playing a white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs against Australia, which will end on July 24. Three days later, the Pakistan tour kicks off with a five-match T20I series followed by two Tests, scheduled to end on August 24.
