Younis Khan backs 'future star' Haider Ali to come good after disappointing South Africa tour

The Pakistan batting coach hoped the middle-order batters can grow into their roles in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup

While the top-order trio of Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman shone brightly during Pakistan’s 3-1 T20I series win in South Africa, the performances of the middle and lower order weren’t quite as convincing. The final match of the tour was a case in point: Pakistan slipped from 92 for 1 to 129 for 7 before Mohammad Nawaz steered them home in a chase of 145.One middle-order batter who came under the spotlight in particular was Haider Ali, who made scores of 14, 12 and 3 in his three visits to the crease during the T20Is. Pakistan’s batting coach Younis Khan has termed the 20-year-old Haider a “future star”, and has backed him to succeed, given enough chances to settle into his role in the side.”Haider is a future star and very much capable,” Younis said in a virtual conference. “His natural game is attacking, and I still remember he smacked a six off his very second ball on debut. I understand he has played a lot of games since then, and missed a few opportunities to grow, but we have to give him time [to grow into his role]. He was opening in the previous series, and then, when he was playing in the PSL for his franchise, he put up some amazing performances lower down the order. Here too we tried to use him in that [middle-order] role.”I struggled for four years when I came into international cricket. I was lucky that my performances didn’t get highlighted. But at the same time when you come into international cricket there is a big responsibility on the player himself. You represent a 220 million population and it’s up to you in the end, regardless of anything. You have to prepare yourself for this big opportunity and you have to give everything to make it count. We have a responsibility as a coach but the players are growing into their roles, and they will make mistakes, otherwise you can’t learn.”Haider made his T20I debut during the tour of England last year, scoring a half-century on debut batting at No. 3. After batting in that position in his first five T20Is, he has moved up and down the order, opening on three occasions and batting at No. 5 during the tour of South Africa. All that shuffling has coincided with a lean patch. After starting his career with two fifties in his first three innings, he’s only crossed 20 once in his last nine innings, causing his overall average to drop to 20.91. Asif, meanwhile, has struggled to replicate the hitting ability he’s shown in domestic T20s in international cricket. While he averages 25.06 and boasts a strike rate of 146.98 in all T20 games, his corresponding T20I numbers are a modest 17.14 and 124.72 respectively.Mohammad Nawaz sealed a tense chase in the final T20I after a middle-order collapse•AFP/Getty Images

Reflecting on the overall performance of the middle order, Younis said the batters are still learning their roles, and will learn from their mistakes in time.”It’s a young team, players are settling, and they aren’t clear about their [batting positions] yet, but they will be going forward,” Younis said. “We have the Zimbabwe series now, and it’s a good chance for the youngsters to go out and play the role that is being worked out for them, and in which we want to see them grow, because we have some very tough cricket coming up, with the T20 World Cup in India. The top order is vital, but the lower order is equally important, which is where we are lagging behind, and we have to address this to get to the top.”At the same time, Younis urged the batters to take ownership of their own performances in order to raise their game.”We are playing constant cricket day and night and we can’t really push players all the time. They should themselves understand. There is not much time to do technique work, [we focus] mainly on the tactical aspect. I speak with players and always tell them not to come back without finishing their job, but then in the last T20 for example we saw Fakhar and Babar left it unfinished and suddenly the situation turned out that we couldn’t even score a run a ball.”Players need to understand their game and take ownership of their performance. It’s not club-level cricket where us coaches can discipline a player using a stick. We do have a role but the players need to themselves realise how they can bring success to their game.”Younis joined the Pakistan set-up in England last year and has taken on the role full-time since the 2020-21 tour of New Zealand. Over the last one year, Pakistan have picked a number of players without too much experience in domestic cricket, often turning to youngsters who have shown flashes of brilliance in the T20 format, particularly in the PSL.Younis Khan took over as Pakistan’s batting coach during last year’s tour of England•Getty Images

Younis believes a player must have a certain amount of experience in domestic cricket before being picked for Pakistan, in order to be ready for all the situations that international cricket may throw their way.”If you are picking anyone for Test cricket then he should have sufficient first-class experience behind him,” Younis said. “If it’s for T20 or one day he should have played adequate List A games. But then these days, whether it’s the media, or the commentators, or YouTube channels, they build pressure on teams, coaches, and selectors to pick certain players. They say, ‘pick this player,’ because they think he is ready, but then he has played only two T20 matches. So this pressure is created by the media prompting selectors to pick players.”We speak about young blood a lot, and yes, T20 and one-day cricket are about young blood. But it’s also important to pick players who are mature, who have the fitness and the commitment, and who have enough cricket under their belt. It’s important to pick the best players who have the experience, and who won’t score five runs an over when you need 10 an over, and won’t aim for 15 runs an over when you need five an over.”When asked how much time a player should be given before the selectors make a final decision, he said: “I am a batting coach and very much part of the support staff, but the final decision about the selection of any player isn’t mine. It’s not my decision on how many opportunities a player should be given – for all this, we have chief selectors, head coach and captain, and it’s their prerogative. But in my personal opinion if any player plays two to three series, he will perform if he has the caliber. So I can only give my recommendation but the final decision lies with the captain and head coach. We are trying to figure out a right combination with players who are suitable for different situations and who can perform.”

On the list: Leeds keen on Gnonto rival who can “decide a game on his own”

Leeds United fans will be wanting a significant amount of bodies in through the door between now and transfer deadline day, with those moves having already started following Largie Ramazani's confirmed move to West Yorkshire.

It feels unlikely that the business will end there, when it comes to incomings through the door, as the Championship promotion hopefuls continue to pick up the pieces from Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter leaving in quick succession.

Yet, there might well also be more gutting departures to come, with Wilfried Gnonto rumoured to be wanting a move away again from Elland Road, as a new right winger option is targeted.

Latest on Leeds' transfer search

As per Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth – via Football League World – Leeds are monitoring established Hungary international Roland Sallai as a potential new purchase, with the exciting 27-year-old attacker on a list of faces the Whites will try and sign before August is over.

This would see Leeds prioritise even more depth in the attacking spots, with Ramazani purchased to replace the void of Summerville as a daring presence on the left flank, with Sallai also strengthening Daniel Farke's men down the opposite channel.

Roland Sallai for Hungary.

Leeds supporters will be praying that this pursuit doesn't result in Gnonto packing his bags, with football journalist Sacha Tavolieri on social media speculating that the Italian forward is now 'pushing to leave', amidst a mass exodus away from Elland Road.

Yet, even if the former FC Zurich man does finally get his move away, the current SC Freiburg winger would be seen as a perfect alternative going forward.

What Sallai can offer Leeds

Sallai is always constantly delivering the goods for his nation when the pressure is ramped up, with an impressive 13 goals amassed from 53 caps to date, including the sublime strike shown above last year versus Serbia.

But, the 27-year-old is also a reliable source of goals and creativity for his Bundesliga employers too, with 50 goal contributions managed from 161 Freiburg clashes.

In contrast, the Whites number 29 has only 14 goals and seven assists from 70 career contests for the West Yorkshire side, with Sallai offering Leeds another great attacking option, if Gnonto does decide to move on.

One of his former teammates at international level in Gabor Kiraly even described Sallai as a talent who can "decide a game on his own", which Leeds will need deep into another promotion battle, with Summerville now out of the picture who could win games singlehandedly through moments of immense magic.

Sallai would offer Leeds a far more imposing option going forward too, who is also unafraid to regularly test the opposition 'keeper, with the Hungarian bettering Gnonto in terms of aerial duels won last campaign, alongside the number of shots registered when glancing at the table above.

Therefore, he would be able to offer Daniel James some extra competition down the right, whilst also giving Leeds something different away from the lightning-quick nature of Gnonto.

He's certainly a different style player to James, with Gnonto very similar to the Welshman in terms of their respective strengths honing in on their ability to burst forward with ease, as Leeds try to add new elements to their attacking game with their fresh recruits.

Already known to some English football fans for scoring against West Ham United in the Europa League last year, Sallai represents Leeds gambling on left-field new faces to replace the old guard at Elland Road, with their promotion hopes hanging in the balance even more if these signings don't come good.

Arteta has got his answer to Joao Pedro in Arsenal’s £45m "monster"

It's funny how quickly the mood changes in football, isn't it? Heading into Arsenal's lunchtime kick-off with Brighton on Saturday, home fans at the Emirates Stadium were buoyed by a perfect start to the season and the new signing of Raheem Sterling.

The Gunners know they have tough fixtures coming up but they can take on anyone with their strong crop of players. Ah, now there's always a catch, isn't there?

Declan Rice's peculiar sending-off turned the tide of the game as the Seagulls valiantly fought to earn a 1-1 draw on the road. His red card means he'll miss one of the most important matches of the season away at Spurs after the international break.

What makes this matter worse is the lack of replacements. Mikel Arteta will have to lean on Jorginho with Mikel Merino cruelly picking up a shoulder injury in his very first training session with the club. It's safe to say that Arsenal haven't had the best of luck over the last 72 hours or so.

All that being said, it wasn't just Rice and the officials they had to curse after dropping points to Brighton. They also have Joao Pedro to blame.

Joao Pedro's performance in numbers vs Arsenal

A matter of weeks ago reports emerged that suggested Edu and Arteta had been in discussions over a move for Pedro before Friday night's 11pm deadline. Well, they may well be cursing their luck that they didn't pursue a move.

The Brazilian continued his bright start to the season in north London on Saturday, putting in a particularly energetic performance against the Gunners.

Pedro was crowned the game's player of the match, an award he largely won thanks to his well-taken goal in the second half.

However, he wasn't just vibrant in the penalty box as he danced and jinked his way past a plethora of Arsenal players during his 90 minutes on the field.

It was a moment in the first half that will stick out for Fabian Hurzeler, as the 22-year-old body-feinted his way past Bukayo Saka, leaving him to huff and sigh in his wake.

Then, there was that controversial moment. We have to talk about it. While Rice was sent off for allegedly delaying the restart and kicking the ball away, no punishment followed for an incident where Pedro did the same, perhaps in a worse fashion. As the aforementioned Saka said post-game, some consistency would be nice.

That decision is unlikely to blow over anytime soon but Arsenal must lick their wounds and come back firing after the break for international fixtures. They will hope to do so with Gabriel Jesus back at their disposal.

Arsenal's answer to Joao Pedro

During pre-season, there was a spring in the step of Jesus again. Last season was a difficult one for the Brazilian who scored just four Premier League goals and spent 85 days on the treatment table.

Even when fit, the £45m signing rarely started with Kai Havertz's mesmerising form as a central striker pushing him to the top of the pecking order.

However, as Arsenal geared up for the new campaign, Jesus was fit. At long last. Arteta praised his striker, "you can see in his eyes that there’s a spark there," he said, hailing the attacker for returning back in "top condition."

Sadly, it didn't take long for the former Manchester City man to get injured again. Jesus had played just five minutes of their opening match of the season before he was subsequently ruled out of the encounter with Aston Villa. The manager cited that "he felt something in his groin."

Once up to speed again, the boss will have an opportunity to unleash his very own version of Pedro, the player who terrorised Arsenal this weekend.

Indeed, according to FBRef's catalogue of data, the Brighton sensation is the third-most similar striker in Europe's top five leagues to Jesus over the last year of action. The aforementioned piece of skill to advance beyond Saka shows the similarities in a nutshell. The way they move, the way they manipulate the ball are very alike. There is a reason analyst Ben Mattinson once hailed him as the "heir to Gabriel Jesus".

A threat on either foot, Pedro is a captivating talent and is sure to get the better of many a Premier League defence throughout the rest of the campaign.

Arsenal are one of the first teams to feel his powers this season and a look at the numbers demonstrates why he's being talked about so much right now.

So, while Pedro would appear to be the more progressive of the two, driving from deep, it doesn't mean that Jesus doesn't thrive in those areas either.

The two Brazilians attempt a similar number of take-ons and boast similar numbers for expected assists and key passes per 90, illuminating their skillset as not just goalscorers but providers of opportunities too. It's that attribute which made Jesus such a "monster" – as he was described by journalist Mark Douglas – throughout his first campaign in north London.

Since then, it's been a tale of woe for Arsenal's number 9, but there's still time to bounce back.

Natarajan out of IPL with knee injury

Sunrisers are yet to name a replacement for the left-arm quick, who played only two games this IPL

Nagraj Gollapudi22-Apr-20211:48

Daniel Vettori: T Natarajan loss a big one for Sunrisers Hyderabad

Sunrirsers Hyderabad’s T Natarajan has been ruled out of the 2021 IPL. ESPNcricinfo understands the left-arm fast bowler had been coping with the knee injury he picked up during the Australia tour, which has now flared up once again. The franchise has not yet decided on a replacement.Natarajan played only two games this IPL, against the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore before being replaced by Khaleel Ahmed in the Sunrisers’ XI for their subsequent two matches. On Thursday, after registering their first win of the season, Sunrisers’ captain David Warner had said Natarajan had been hampered by a sore knee which needed scans, but the fast bowler would then need to quit the IPL bubble and then quarantine for seven days to re-enter.Natarajan, 29, grabbed headlines at the 2020 IPL when he took the strike-bowling responsibility for the Sunrisers in the absence of an injured Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Natarajan’s death bowling skills comprising a deadly yorker and change of pace gained him a ticket for the Australia tour as a net bowler initially for the white-ball segment. Natarajan ended up becoming the first Indian player to debut in all three formats on the same tour.Natarajan then returned home to a hero’s welcome, but the BCCI did not reveal he had been carrying a knee niggle from Australia. It was owing to that injury that Natarajan missed most of the T20I leg of the home series against England in February, playing only one T20I and later the final ODI.Unfortunately for the Sunrisers, this is the second straight season they have lost a key player at the beginning of their tournament. In 2020 IPL, Mitchell Marsh became the first player in the tournament to be ruled out due to injury after he hurt his ankle during their first match. The Sunrisers then got another jolt when Kumar picked up a thigh injury in the third match of the season and had to return to India from the UAE.The Sunrisers now have Kumar, Ahmed, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma, Basil Thampi and allrounder Jason Holder in their fast bowling reserves.
