Bid accepted as Arsenal now agree to let "gifted" player leave

Arsenal have now accepted a bid for a "very gifted" member of Mikel Arteta's squad and have shook hands on a deal to let him leave the club.

Players who Arsenal could sell or loan this summer

Albert Sambi Lokonga has already agreed terms to join Sevilla from the Premier League title hopefuls, as widely reported, and talks are believed to be ongoing over a potential loan-to-buy deal.

If all goes to plan, the Belgian, who spent 2023/2024 on a season-long loan at Luton Town, will be heading to Spain and joining the likes of Mohamed Elneny, Cedric Soares, Mika Biereth, Arthur Okonkwo and others out of the Emirates Stadium exit door.

More players who could be sold by Arsenal, as per various press rumours from the past few weeks, come in the form of Emile Smith Rowe, Thomas Partey, Aaron Ramsdale, Reiss Nelson, Gabriel Jesus, Fabio Vieira, Eddie Nketiah and Kieran Tierney.

Reports emerged this week that Arsenal are ready to accept bids for Tierney after Arteta decided he's not in his long-term plans, while Partey is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia as he enters the final 11 months of his contract.

Sporting director Edu Gaspar has been tasked with trimming Arteta's squad of unneeded bodies ahead of a potential third successive title challenge with Man City while attempting to upgrade the Spaniard's ranks.

Arsenal are believed to be closing in on a deal for Riccardo Calafiori, with the Gunners agreeing personal terms and a five-year contract for the Italian who impressed at Euro 2024.

The 22-year-old, who also helped his club Bologna qualify for the Champions League last season, can be deployed at both centre-half and at left-back – which would push the likes of Nuno Tavares further down Arteta's pecking order.

Tavares was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest last season, where he made just eight league appearances, but did impress on a temporary spell at Marseille the season prior.

Arsenal accept bid from Lazio for Nuno Tavares

As relayed by Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese now looks set to be Arteta's next departure. Arsenal have accepted a bid from Lazio for Tavares, who will sign the 24-year-old on loan with an obligation to buy set at around £5.8 million-£6.7 million.

Negotiations over personal terms are now ongoing with Tavares, as Lazio are now trying to convince the player to make a move to Serie A. The former Benfica starlet has made just 28 appearances for Arsenal since joining in 2021, despite Arteta calling him a "very gifted athlete".

"What you can see, his physicality, he is naturally a very gifted athlete," said Arteta on Tavares during his debut season in north London.

"He can run and he can change speed and direction, and technically he is very gifted. But, for me, the most important thing is that he is a defender and he needs to defend first, and then he can provide the rest of his qualities.”

Risk of matches being cancelled if Covid-19 cases rise remains real – CSA doctor

Hosts already hit by two positive tests, although two more rounds of testing reveal no new cases

The risk of matches being cancelled if a squad returns too many cases of Covid-19 remains real as the South African summer gets underway on Friday. The hosts have already been hit with two positive tests and have since been tested twice more, including a final round on Thursday morning. Their third test run revealed no new cases.Asked what would happen if the pre-match tests showed a significant number of cases, CSA’s chief medical officer, Dr Shuaib Manjra explained it could impact the schedule.”There probably won’t be a game. If you’ve got lots of positives you’ve got a quarantine context,” he said. “We cannot bring in a player from the outside without testing them at least twice before we bring them into this space. If a large group of people test positive we wouldn’t have adequate opportunity to bridge people into the bio-bubble. But we’ve got a squad of 24 so hopefully we can put a team together.”ALSO READ: Chaos swirls off field as South Africa welcome England for 2020 rematchThis is South Africa’s first experience of operating in a bio-secure environment as a national team (although several players have just returned from 11 weeks of doing it in the IPL) and will become their new-normal for the next six months. In a country where healthcare resources are challenged and where, as of this week, overall Coronavirus case numbers are going up, South African cricket will have to learn to box clever in the environment and with the welfare of their players, making this the most complicated season yet.Ahead of this series, the 24 players were tested before entering their base and one returned a positive result. He was kept out of the bubble and quarantined at a different venue. Two other players who were deemed to have come in close contact with the player were isolated and have since tested negative. A second player then tested positive a few days later, having already been in the bubble, and had to be removed. Both players will be retested and if negative, will rejoin the squad on Saturday, ending a tough period for both of them.”The players were devastated on receiving the news that they had tested positive for Covid,” Manjra said. “He (the first player) has taken quite a bit of strain in the sense that he’s been isolated in a hotel all alone and not participating in training.”There’s going to be a lag period in him coming to the squad and getting back to fitness because of injury concerns. If you’ve been in a hotel room for 10 days we can’t simply throw you onto the park. We’ve got to give at least another seven days to return to match fitness in order to consider him for any of the games. It takes a mental toll on him and all the others.”Manja described the period around testing as “stressful,” and the tests themselves as “uncomfortable,” but unavoidable. “Players don’t like the Covid test. We had a guy here doing the test on Monday and the players complained, so we had to try and get somebody else. Some of them are over enthusiastic, and not only get into your nose but into your sinuses and into your brain as well,” Manjra said. “It’s an uncomfortable test, but it’s very short.”And it will have to happen continuously as the summer goes on. Testing will be done again between the T20s and ODIs “to ensure the integrity of the bubble is maintained,” and before each Test match. South Africa have five scheduled for the summer.During the period in which they are in the bubble, players will have to continue to operate in small groups, whether at training or socially. “In the event that somebody tests positive we isolate a small group of people rather than the entire contact or non-contact group. That has a role to play in the dynamic of the team in terms of training, dining and socialising,” Manjra said. Those limitations, the administrative crises at CSA and the controversy over the way South African cricket has handled the Black Lives Movement have all made for an imperfect build up to the series but, Manjra believes, helped them become closer as a squad.”Preparing without distractions is an ideal situation, but in the real world you always have distractions. One of the things that allowed our team to build resilience is much of the kind work we’re doing in the background with the squad,” he said. “There’s a lot of opportunity during lockdown for the players to interact with each other and get to know each other, and play out some of the dynamics we’ve been speaking about.”For us it’s not only about symbolism but about living particular experiences and sharing them — demonstrating what we believe in. The lockdown has a positive effect in those terms. Building resilience is not about removing distractions. It’s how you deal with those distractions, which will always be there.”Eoin Morgan, the England captain, was understanding of the challenges of keeping the sport’s bio-secure environments safe.”During the summer we did a magnificent job in not having any cases at all,” Morgan said. “We felt in a very privileged position, not to have to worry about the virus in our bubble, but this has presented different challenges.”South Africa have had two cases. One was off site, one was on the site, at the hotel, which presented a different challenge. To us, very similarly in the summer, if we had a case, we needed to be able to demonstrate that we could contain it to make every team, and every player within that bubble secure and safe, and South Africa seem to have done that so far.”Morgan also acknowledged the importance of the series being played at such a difficult time amid the pandemic, describing the role it could play in providing some relief and entertainment as “huge”.”As a sportsman, there are very few times you play sport or contribute to things when people actually really need it,” he said. “I went through this experience myself towards the back end of our first lockdown period when sport just started to be reintegrated into people’s TVs at home, and the smile it put on my face and the community that I live in was outstanding.”Given the circumstances, how bad they still are, particularly at home, it’s important for us to go out there and hopefully put on a bit of a show. Because it’s certainly a lot of different challenges at this moment in time but certainly sport can help relieve that a little bit.”

Journalist: Celtic could lose £8,600-a-week ace who Ange Postecoglou liked

Celtic have received an offer for a player who Ange Postecoglou admired during his time as manager, according to an update from Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops are preparing for yet another defence of their Scottish Premiership title, but Brendan Rodgers will know the importance of adding to his squad to stave off the threat of rivals Rangers, as well as making sure they are as best equipped as possible to do well in the Champions League.

Celtic have been backed to make a move for Burnley centre-back Dara O'Shea, while reports have also claimed that Royal Antwerp ace Michel-Ange Balikwisha, Wolves left-back Hugo Bueno and ex-Hoops striker Adam Idah are all targets, too.

In the case of Bueno, the Scottish giants are believed to have made a new approach to snap him up, seeing him as a standout choice to add quality at left-back.

Meanwhile, Tanner Tessman has also been linked with joining Celtic in the current transfer window, with the United States international currently plying his trade at newly promoted Serie A side Venezia. He only has one cap to his name for his country, but will be hoping to force his way into their plans more often ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Celtic could lose player who Postecoglou admired

Taking to X, Sky Sports journalist Joseph claimed that Celtic have received a loan offer from Belgian club KV Mechelen for Stephen Welsh, suggesting the 24-year-old could depart this summer amid interest elsewhere from English Championship clubs:

In truth, this feels like the right time for Welsh to at least be sent out on loan somewhere, or even seal a permanent move away from Celtic, given his lack of football recently. Last season, the defender was limited to just five appearances in the Scottish Premiership, with a further five coming from the substitutes' bench, although an ankle injury did keep him out for an extended period of time.

While Rodgers may not see much of a future for the centre-back at Parkhead, he could be a good signing for another team, having averaged 2.8 successful aerial duels per game last term – the fifth-best total in the squad – as well as once being hailed by Postecoglou, who said of him:

"Welshy has shown a lot of growth. I expect that from all the players. He has come back for pre-season and worked really hard through it. We are challenging him to take his game to another level. He has definitely gone up a level from last year and hopefully he knows that we will try to get even more out of him."

Imagine him & Palma: Celtic in talks to sign "exciting" £10k-p/w dynamo

The Hoops are reportedly pushing to secure a deal for the Premier League defender.

ByDan Emery Jul 26, 2024

The fact that the £8,600-a-week Welsh has never started more than 10 league games in a campaign for Celtic speaks volumes about his squad status, so a move away would arguably suit all parties.

Perth Scorchers spinner Ashton Agar will not play in the BBL regular season as he continues to battle with his recovery from a calf injury.Ashton Turner will also captain the Scorchers for the remainder of the season after Mitchell Marsh opted out of the captaincy duties in the week leading up to the tournament.Agar suffered his calf injury while batting in Australia’s third ODI against India in Canberra in early December. The injury saw him ruled out of the T20I series that followed. He has not played since due to ongoing issues with his calf with his recovery taking longer than was initially expected. He is now set to be unavailable until the end of January.”Ash has been experiencing ongoing soreness during rehabilitation from the right calf injury that he sustained playing for Australia,” WACA Sports Science Manager Nick Jones said. “This injury will require a more extended period of rehabilitation and we hope Ash will be ready to return to play in approximately one month’s time.”Meanwhile, Marsh spoke to the Scorchers hierarchy a week prior to the tournament requesting that he not captain the side for the BBL. He was recovering from an ankle injury in the lead-up to the tournament but he has played in all five of the Scorchers matches so far and has bowled in the last two.The Scorchers handed the captaincy to Turner and he will remain in the role for the remainder of the tournament. Turner had led the Scorchers previously in Marsh’s absence and captained Western Australia to the Australian domestic 50-over title last summer while Marsh was injured with a broken hand.

– conta Marcos, criador do canal “RB Massa Bruta”, no Youtube.

Ele falava do time e eu comecei a gostar.

SAUDOSISTAS? O TIME DA RED BULL

While recruitment for the men’s Hundred involved a retention stage and a player draft, the women’s competition is running on an open-market system, with players and teams allowed to negotiate contracts directly. The ECB remains optimistic that some Indian players will be involved in the competition. While the BCCI does not grant No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for active men’s players to appear in overseas leagues, India’s leading female players have previously appeared in the Kia Super League (KSL) – which has now been discontinued to make way for the Hundred – and the Women’s Big Bash League.ESPNcricinfo understands that Indian players are keen to be involved in the competition, but that they are waiting on approval from the BCCI. Four India internationals – Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma – were involved in the KSL between 2017 and 2019.ESPNcricinfo understands that the ECB has been in discussions with the BCCI about the prospect, and a spokesperson said they were “hopeful” of Indian involvement.Charlotte Edwards, Southern Brave’s head coach, told Sky’s : “I think there are conversations happening. Clearly, they’re players we want in this competition. We’ve got most of the top Australian players, so I think the next step is to get the Indian players over the line. That’s exciting for the competition, so hopefully that will happen.”ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Beth Barrett-Wild, the head of the women’s Hundred, told ESPNcricinfo that the ECB was confident the “best players in the world” would feature.”Obviously there’s a level of uncertainty with the Covid situation, but we’ve got a brilliant team hooked into government who are making sure we’re on top of what’s happening,” she said. “It’s really difficult to know where we’ll be in July but those overseas players have all signed their contracts, so fingers crossed they will be over here in the summer.”It shows that these players want to play in the Hundred and see it as a big opportunity, both from a playing perspective and in terms of their personal visibility. We talk about world-class quality and the Hundred being a world-class competition, and I can categorically say that we’ve got the best players in the world coming.”Teams have also confirmed the signings of several English players. Deals for Sophie Ecclestone (Manchester Originals), Bryony Smith (Welsh Fire), Alice Davidson-Richards (Northern Superchargers), Sarah Glenn (Trent Rockets), Sophia Dunkley (Southern Brave), Mady Villiers (Oval Invincibles), Georgia Elwiss (Birmingham Phoenix) and Tammy Beaumont (London Spirit) were all announced on Tuesday.
