SCG's 'keeper returns for youth homeless sleepout

Phil Emery will join the likes of Mitchell Starc and Alyssa Healy for the Sport Stars Sleepout to raise money for the homeless

It would be difficult to find any individual who spent more time training, playing or celebrating at the SCG than Phil Emery. Across nearly 200 first-class and one day games for New South Wales between 1987 and 1999, many of them as captain, Emery became almost as synonymous with the grand old ground as the Members and Ladies stands that still give it among the most distinctive silhouettes in world cricket.Next week, however, Emery will find a new way of experiencing the SCG, by sleeping rough on its outfield as part of the Sport Stars Sleepout for the Chappell Foundation, an event held in an effort to raise money for the cause of youth homelessness in Australia. For Emery, the average figure of about 30,000 homeless Australians under the age of 25 on any given night is maddening. The onset of Covid-19 this year has capped the number of SCG sleepers for the third edition of the event at 32, but provides still more impetus to raise money for the cause. Emery, who over the past 20 years has built a business career in the insurance industry while also serving as chairman of the “Baggy Blues” New South Wales past players association, said he had been floored by the numbers when asked to take part by the foundation’s patron Greg Chappell.Emery will join the likes of Mitchell Starc, Alyssa Healy, Lisa Sthalekar, Steve O’Keefe, Russel Arnold, Stuart MacGill, Alex Blackwell and Daniel Hughes among cricketers taking part on Monday night. Donations, pledged to an individual sleeper, can be made here.”People never believe it, seeing the numbers it’s ridiculous. Hopefully we raise lots of money, increase awareness about the issue and we can do some good with it,” he said. “From sending out a message about it at 4 o’clock yesterday, I think at 6 o’clock I had A$2,200 in the space of two hours, of just people generously giving stuff straight away. Extremely generous, it’s great.”While the unchanging elements of the SCG have been a big part of its charm, Emery reflected on some of the hidden elements of the ground that he and other state teammates became well familiar with over the course of a career that featured three Sheffield Shield wins in 1990, 1993 and 1994 – the last two as captain.Phil Emery goes up in appeal, Sydney, March 27, 1993•Fairfax Media via Getty Images

“It was funny, when you were playing it was like your second home,” he said. “There’s a bar now underneath the members bar, but it used to be like an underpass with a road that ran through it. We used to park in there in what would be the middle of the bar now. You were out there from pre-season in July, August, even just for fielding, and we used to train on the ground, so you’d spend an enormous amount of time on the field.”I first went onto the field when I was 11, and that was when the Sheridan Stand was there and the Brewongle and all the old concourse, the big hill, and the Paddington hill and all those things. Playing through the era when they took the hill away, I remember doing an interview with Tracey Holmes and I was facing the members stand on the ground, and she said ‘so what’s it going to be like playing without the hill’ and I went ‘what have they done’, and I turned around and there were bulldozers on it. I wasn’t paying that much attention back then!”As the son of the former Wallabies international Neville, Emery experienced the old precinct before the advent of the Sydney Football Stadium – currently being rebuilt – and redevelopment of the adjoining showgrounds into a studio complex.”Going back now, it’s still got the same feel to it with the Ladies Stand and the Members Stand, around the back, the nets are the same,” Emery said. “But when I was first there we had the No. 2 ground and I played a NSW Colts game there. You used to be able to walk through a little hole in the fence at the top and go through to the sports ground. I played a rugby grand final, my first year out of school in third grade on the sports ground. You had the showground oval, the SCG Nos 1 and 2 and the sports ground all in a row.”But it’s still a fabulous place, it’s just got an aura about it, it’s a big ground but it’s not the MCG. If you put the wicket in the middle its a biggish ground, but it’s intimate if that makes sense. The visitors’ dressing room has still got the split room between professionals out the back and the gentlemen out the front. That’s still there. The home dressing room’s changed a bit since I first went in it, there’s some mod cons in there, but the layout hasn’t changed really, and you wouldn’t change that for the world.”Fabulous feel in the old room, even the little windows and banister out the front where you sit outside. You’re not in a dungeon, you get natural light into the place. You can actually stand in the change room and watch the game – not the best view but the best place to be. You can walk out through the bar and then out to bat if you want. That sort of thing – it’s connected to the building, you’re not hidden away, and that’s part of its charm.”

Enquiry made: West Ham make move to sign new "world-class player" for £10m

West Ham United are interested in bringing a "world-class" player back to the Premier League for around £10m.

West Ham transfer rumours

It is set to be a summer of change at West Ham as they begin life after David Moyes. The Scotsman guided the Hammers to Europa Conference League glory in 2022/23 but parted ways with his long-time club after no silverware and a 9th-place finish in the top flight during 2023/24.

Julen Lopetegui has now taken the reigns at the London Stadium and is expected to put his own stamp on Moyes' squad during the summer transfer window, as he said recently:

“I feel very happy, first of all, to be able to be part of the future of this big Club," the Spaniard stated. "We will try to put our stamp on the Club. I feel that we have a fantastic platform. I think the last few years have been very good years to have this base, of course, but my ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this."

Following those comments, West Ham are said to be in talks to sign Palmeiras attacker Luis Guilherme, in a deal that could be worth £30m. Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest and Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi is of interest to the east Londoners, while, Lopetegui personally wants West Ham to sign former player Max Kilman this summer.

West Ham make first move to sign “world-class” player for just £10m

Now, a new name, or rather an old name, has been tipped to return to the Premier League via West Ham this summer. The player in question? Ex-Crystal Palace and Manchester United player, Wilfried Zaha.

According to a report from Fotospor, via Caught Offside, the Hammers have inquired about the possibility of bringing the forward back to England and have "requested information" from his current side, Galatasaray, regarding a potential transfer. Zaha is under contract in Turkey until 2026 and is valued at around £9m by Transfermarkt. However, the report from Fotospor claim an opening offer to Galatasaray for the 31-year-old could be worth £10m.

Wilfried Zaha scores for Crystal Palace against Brentford.

Despite now getting on in years, Zaha is still chipping in with plenty of goal contributions, scoring 10 and assisting five in 42 this past term. Before leaving Palace for Galatasaray, meanwhile, he was able to find the net 90 times and assist 62 for the Eagles across two spells.

The Ivorian international also earned high praise from then-Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp back in 2019 when he was still plying his trade in the Premier League.

"They are really good at counter attacks and set pieces, Wilfried Zaha is a world-class player and he gets into a one-on-one situation and we’re one down," Klopp said after Liverpool beat Palace 4-3 at Anfield during the 2018-19 season. Will Zaha be able to repeat that form if he returns to England this summer?

Graeme Smith 'shocked' after threats on supporting Black Lives Matter movement

The former captain also called on the government to assist with the growth of the game in SA

Graeme Smith remains steadfast in his support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement in the face of an “enormous amount of abuse”, including “death threats” following his actions at the 3TC match in July. At that game, Smith – along with all 24 participating players, match and administrative officials and commentators – took a knee and wore an armband with the BLM logo on it. That prompted criticism from those who do not agree with the anti-racist stance and more criticism from those who feel Smith has done too little, too late.In the lead-up to and since the match, at least four former national players – all white – opposed the gesture in support of BLM while several former players of colour have since gone public with their stories of discrimination, some under Smith’s captaincy. Smith, who is now South Africa’s director of cricket, believes some outpouring of expression stems from disappointment in how South African society has stagnated almost three decades after democracy.”It has shocked me how heated things have got. I get that in South Africa we’ve got so many issues and in some ways its felt like we are bearing the brunt for government not having delivered on a number of things over the years and the frustration of that,” Smith said on a webinar hosted by the financial advisor network PSG. “You pick up the paper or you click online and you all see all the negativity and the disappointment and the frustration in people’s lives and livelihoods being affected, so it’s been a tough period post that [3TC] game.”The 3TC match is the only cricket South African players have been part of since the country went into lockdown in March. It took place ten days after England and West Indies became the first cricket countries to show their support for BLM. The first South African player to be asked for this thoughts on the matter was Lungi Ngidi, who said he hoped his team-mates would join other sporting personalities in taking a stand against racism. The next day, Pat Symcox, Boeta Dippenaar, Rudi Steyn and Brian McMillan questioned Ngidi’s stance and asked him to show similar consideration for the victims of farm murders. That, in turn, sparked a racially charged conversation that is continuing in cricket circles.Smith supported Ngidi, first in a statement on social media, and then at the 3TC match and reiterated that today. “Lungi, in my mind, said nothing wrong. He expressed an opinion – he didn’t make a statement – and expressed the fact that the team was going to get together and have a conversation and in no right did he deserve to be attacked. What happened to him and the way the guys came at him is entirely wrong,” Smith said.Andile Phehlukwayo and Lungi Ngidi take a knee before the start of the 3TC match•AFP via Getty Images

South Africa’s players have since spoken about the BLM movement and are headed to a culture camp at the Kruger National Park this week to discuss team identity, and Smith is pleased with the unity in the ranks. “Within the space, we’ve handled it extremely maturely. We got together, we listened, the conversation was open, people shared and we decided to support each other in this movement,” Smith said. “That’s what taking a knee meant to us. The fact that we are all together. I haven’t seen the team having such an honest conversation in a few years, which is great.”But that containment of togetherness has not captured the entire cricket community and Smith expects there is more soul searching to be done. He categorises the stories of discrimination into two groups: those that were a consequence of South Africa’s divided past and those that resulted from the nature of competitive sport. “It’s not only sport, its business and life as well. There’s lost heroes everywhere. We’ve got to be able to listen and share in the stories other guys are bringing to the fore as well, understand where they are coming from and the goal for us is to try and find a way to move forward in the right direction,” he said.ALSO READ: Graeme Smith denies Thami Tsolekile’s allegations of racial discrimination”Sport is also brutal. Cricket is brutal. It’s a high performing environment, your personal performance is always under scrutiny whether you are a batter, a bowler, and with sport you also have people who feel begrudged not getting that opportunity, not getting enough of a chance and it’s a fine line between the two.”So how does Smith, in his role as director of cricket, work towards increasing opportunities for all? A common answer offered is in grassroots projects, and that is one area where CSA has invested heavily in. Last year, R358 million (approx. US $20.6 million) was spent on development and Smith is spending some of his time trying to ascertain if it was spent smartly enough. “The strategies around how we bring people through and grow the game is something we can debate because for that amount of money, you want to be seeing rewards,” he said.He also called on the government to assist, tying in with his earlier point that many of the structural inequalities that remain from the Apartheid era have not been addressed. “At what point do governments step in and help with the growth of the game and the facilities?” Smith asked. “Cricket is not a cheap sport. You can’t just pick it up and run around. You need the bat, the ball, the facilities. Our goal is to create heroes and if we can create a high performing team, where there are no questions around selection, from a political point of view, people will resonate with it. We want to see the game represent all the people. We want to be successful. Let’s get it going.”

Northern Diamonds defeat North West Thunder to seal place in final

Beth Langston’s 3-18 and Sterre Kalis’ unbeaten 55 take Thunder over the line and into decider against Southern Vipers

Northern Diamonds secured a convincing win over cross-Pennine rivals North West Thunder to qualify for next Sunday’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final at Edgbaston, where they will play Southern Vipers.Former England fast bowler Beth Langston returned an excellent 3 for 18 from 8.5 overs as the Thunder, who elected to bat, were bowled out for 143 at Emerald Headingley. The Diamonds then secured their fifth win from six to top the North Group by chasing down their target for the loss of only four wickets with 20.2 overs to spare. Netherlands international Sterre Kalis top-scored with an unbeaten 55 off 67 balls, including nine fours. On a glorious late September day in Leeds, the Thunder were hurt by the loss of two wickets in the first 20 balls of the contest, including Langston bowling Laura Marshall, and later five wickets for 18 runs as they slipped from 91 for 3 to 109 for 8.Langston returned in the latter stages of the innings to bowl Liberty Heap and Rebecca Duckworth, picking the ideal time to return her best figures of the competition on a true pitch. Her new ball partner, Phoebe Graham, also struck twice, as did Jenny Gunn – she also later contributed an unbeaten 26 – and Katie Levick. Upon her return from training with the England squad, left-arm spinner Linsey Smith also added a wicket. The inexperienced Thunder, who have been encouraged by two wins from their six games, were eyeing a recovery from 31 for 3 in 10th over as opener Georgie Boyce and Nat Brown were sharing 60 for the fourth wicket. They hit 29 and 32 respectively, uniting for 11 overs. In that period, the Diamonds looked a touch ragged and will be keen to rectify an issue with wides that reared its head for the fourth game running. In those games combined, they have conceded 95 runs in wides, including 25 in this game. If they do that against the Vipers in the final, it could be very costly. In reply, the Diamonds, who have won both matches against the Thunder this summer, wobbled only briefly as they lost two wickets in the 21st over to slip to 90 for 4 before Kalis steered them home.Rachel Hopkins was bowled around her legs in the seventh over by left-arm spinner Hannah Jones, but captain Hollie Armitage hit six boundaries in a 50-ball 36 to help take the target below 100. Armitage offered a sharp return catch to Thunder skipper Alex Hartley in the 16th over.In the 21st, off-spinner Heap then had Ami Campbell stumped before Alex MacDonald was run out following a mix-up with Kalis three balls later to make it 90 for 4.But 21-year-old Kalis, who hit 87 in last Sunday’s defeat against Central Sparks, found an ally in former England Ashes and World Cup winner Gunn.Gunn was the aggressor with five fours in 35 balls as the pair shared 54 inside nine overs, while Kalis – strong on the sweep – reached 50 off 64 balls in a bonus-point win.

Incoming: 25 y/o agrees £100k-p/w Newcastle deal with "huge" signing on-fee

Newcastle United are set to hand their first summer signing a ‘triple-your-money’ deal, it has recently been revealed.

Newcastle plan for “smart” transfer window

Eddie Howe and St James’ Park officials are seemingly already hard at work behind the scenes when it comes to incomings and outgoings, with the club already confirming exits for Ciaran Clark and Matty Longstaff when their contracts expire.

In regards to incomings, Howe said towards the end of the 2023/24 season that the Magpies will need to be “really smart” when it comes to player recruitment.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

"I think with our current situation and the landscape of the financial position I am not sure we are able to recruit ready made elite players. The players you are trying to get across, I don't think we are in a position to do that and I don't think we were in a position to do that last year.

"So I think we have to be really smart with our recruitment. I think we have to be maybe different to some of the other clubs we are in and around. It is all about the individual player not what bracket they're in. And what they can do for us and how they can take the team or squad forward."

Taking advantage of the free agency market appears to be one way to work “smart” in the market, and it looks as if the club’s first signing won’t cost them a transfer fee.

Lloyd Kelly to Newcastle transfer details

The first senior signing for Newcastle this summer looks to be Lloyd Kelly, who is leaving AFC Bournemouth as a free agent. There has been plenty of speculation regarding Newcastle and Kelly, with the player set to pen a long-term deal at St James’ Park.

Now, Football Insider, reporting on Thursday, shared more details on a transfer, revealing that Kelly is set to land a “huge” signing-on fee and his Newcastle contract will be worth more than £100,000-a-week.

It is a ‘triple-your-money’ deal for Kelly from his previous terms on the south coast with Bournemouth, and it looks as if it is just a matter of time until a transfer is officially announced.

Kelly joins Newcastle after spending five years with the Cherries, making 141 appearances for the club during that time.

The 25-year-old helped Bournemouth win promotion back to the Premier League in 2022 and has turned out on 54 occasions in the top flight, playing as both a centre-back and left-back. He should therefore offer Howe a versatile defensive option, but to start with, he may well be required centrally due to the long-term injuries to current Magpies centre-backs Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.

Chelsea in talks to sign "fantastic" star who’s more clinical than Duran

Chelsea continue to hunt for a lethal goalscorer in the transfer market, to challenge Nicolas Jackson coming off the back of a good first season for the Blues.

In his first season, the Senegal international scored 14 Premier League goals, provided five assists, and played 2,813 minutes. Bettering the numbers of Chelsea all-time great Didier Drogba in his first season at the club.

Jhon Duran from Aston Villa seems to have been the most concrete name in recent weeks, but many names are appearing as Chelsea do their due diligence to acquire competition for Jackson.

Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea transfer news

According to reports from The Athletic's David Ornstein, Chelsea have now held talks with the representatives of Lille striker Jonathan David.

There has been no approach to Lille so far, according to the reports. However, the two clubs have "good relations" and Chelsea are exploring the possibility of a summer move for the 24-year-old Canadian.

Lille's Jonathan David

This signing could provide somewhat of a more known quantity, compared to others names such as Duran and Samuel Omorodion, who have been linked in recent weeks.

How David compares to Jhon Duran

On the surface level, David is the clear option for a striking reinforcement, scoring 26 goals for Lille last campaign, providing four assists and playing 47 games in all competitions. Not only does this prove his tendency to score goals, but also his availability.

Compare this to Duran who, despite making 37 appearances in all competitions, played 2500 fewer minutes than David. The Colombian managed eight goals in those minutes, five of which came in the Premier League.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

David has also got a track record of scoring goals behind him, managing 26 in the 2022/23 season, 19 in the 2021/22 season, and 13 in his first season at Lille in the 2020/21 season. Therefore, it would make sense as to why Chelsea are interested, as they look to bolster the squad with a natural goalscorer up top.

Much like Jackson, the Canadian can drop in and link up play. Making 2.7 progressive passes per 90, 1.61 progressive carries per 90, and supplying 1.81 passes into the final third per 90, showing his ability to drop in deep, as well as affecting the game in the box.

Compare this to Duran, who is a riskier move due to sample size, not being an established goalscorer like David, and possibly even costing more money.

However, what the 20-year-old Aston Villa forward does offer is a physical profile that Chelsea lack. Standing at 6 foot 1, Duran has a powerful build which allows him to often get his own way against defenders, winning duels, not prevailing with 3.79 aerials per 90.

When you compare Duran's 3.79 aerials per 90, with the 0.72 of David, and the 1.13 of Jackson, it is clear to see a profile like the Colombian would provide something Chelsea currently don't have in the squad.

Both strikers clearly offer assets to this Chelsea squad. It will eventually come down to the decision of adding a different profile in Duran, or a proven goal-scoring option in the "fantastic" as dubbed by Micah Richards, David.

Chelsea are now on the verge of signing their answer to Olise
