Talks already underway as defender now hopes to quit Tottenham this summer

Talks are "already underway" with another club as a defender hopes to quit Tottenham this summer, according to a report this week.

Spurs players who could leave this summer

A host of players face very uncertain futures at Spurs, as we approach the summer window.

Tottenham now receive "formal" out-of-window offer for "fast" player

The north Londoners need to offload players.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 13, 2024

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is among the prime candidates to leave N17 with his contract expiring next year, and is set to be one of the bigger names who could make a move to pastures new.

The Dane has actually featured regularly this season but has made the overwhelming majority of his appearances off the bench, with reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano indicating he could choose to leave after switching agents recently.

Meanwhile, Bryan Gil is another player largely overlooked by Ange Postecoglou, and he could choose to leave as well. Feyenoord are said to be really interested in Gil as we approach the summer, and we can't rule out Giovani Lo Celso potentially going as well, given his lack of game time.

Spurs need to trim their squad as they also look to provide their manager with new signings, and technical director Johan Lange has some real decisions to make on the futures of players currently out on loan.

Tanguy Ndombele has been a disaster since his club-record move from Lyon in 2019, with the Frenchman currently on a temporary stint at Galatasaray. It's also been reported that Leeds really want to make Joe Rodon's stay permanent as well.

Japhet Tanganga will return from Millwall with just one year remaining on his deal when he returns, while right-back Djed Spence will be another curious case.

Spence returned to Spurs in January after Leeds cut his loan short, with the Englishman then sent to Genoa for the second half of 2023/2024.

Talks already underway as Spence eyes Genoa stay this summer

According to Lavocerossoblu.com, the 23-year-old is impressing in Serie A, so much so he's grown fond of the club.

Indeed, it is believed Spence hopes to be a Genoa player next season and make his stay there permanent, and talks are "already underway" with Tottenham to try and reach an agreement over his full transfer. Reporter Ben Jacobs had suggested similar in recent weeks.

While Spence can still improve on a tactical level, as explained by this report, the former Middlesbrough starlet is equipped with "impressive speed" – and it is claimed that he wants to be a "protagonist" for the Italians next term. It appears the ball is in his court ahead of the summer.

Desperate times have fans baying for blood

Johannesburg crowd could end up playing a role, however small, in how this series ends

“Hit him again,” came the cry from an exasperated South African supporter, as Anrich Nortje geared up to deliver the final ball of his sixth over, eight minutes after his previous delivery, which sconed Zak Crawley on the helmet. It was hardly a classy piece of advice for the quick bowler – and the Wanderers crowd are not known for their hospitality to opposition teams – but it was also the only one South African fans could come up with. They were desperate. It was 28 overs into the England innings, and South Africa had nothing. Even the somethings they could have had were nothings. When Dom Sibley was given out after what looked like a strangle down the legside from Beuran Hendricks, he reviewed and was found not to have made any contact with the ball. Four overs later, Sibley steered Vernon Philander straight to gully but even as Temba Bavuma and Faf du Plessis were celebrating Bavuma’s catch, the rest were watching Joel Wilson’s signal for a no-ball. Sibley was on 10 the first time, and 12 the second. He was on 29 by the time Crawley was hit. The growing impatience, from people who waited more than three hours just to see some play, was understandable. And it spoke to a wider restlessness that can be felt rumbling through the cricket community in this country.Zak Crawley was hit on the helmet by Anrich Nortje•AFP/Getty Images

Although fans have been told, repeatedly, that rebuilding the South Africa team is going to take a few years, the fast-forward nature of the changes that took place mid-December, the win at SuperSport Park and the fight at Newlands promised a quick-fix. But since then, South Africa have been teetering on the brink of free-fall. And that’s not an exaggeration.Consider that the last time South Africa lost three successive Test series was in 2004-5 when they were defeated by Sri Lanka, India (both away) and England (at home). They have already lost to the first two in this run, made worse by the fact that the failing against Sri Lanka came at home. Should they lose the Wanderers Test, they will have repeated that sequence of defeats, which came at a time when South Africa had options. Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn were at the beginning of their careers, and competition for places was steep. Now, South Africa are searching for options, so much so that in their last 10 Tests dating back to the Wanderers fixture a year ago, 11 players have made their debuts. Not only is that effectively a whole team, but it literally could have been. There have been top-order batsmen, Pieter Malan, Zubayr Hamza and Rassie van der Dussen, middle-order players like Heinrich Klaasen (also a wicket-keeper), two spin-bowling allrounders, Senuran Muthusamy and George Linde two seam-bowling allrounders, Dwaine Pretorius and Wiaan Mulder and three specialist seamers, Dane Paterson, Hendricks and Nortje. Technically that makes up a team, and it’s not a bad team, but it wouldn’t be South Africa’s first choice. That five of the rookies are playing this Test tells you how much experience South Africa lack. That two of them, Pretorius and Paterson, effectively do the same thing, and the same as another member of the XI, Philander, speaks to a selection conundrum that South Africa have only become more tied up in since Port Elizabeth. There, they used Paterson and Philander, who opened the bowling despite the presence of Kagiso Rabada, and were equally ineffective on a slow pitch. Here, they brought in Pretorius as well, in place of Keshav Maharaj.Their decision to go without a spinner might appear to be vindicated by England’s choice to do the same but with England scoring at 3.5 runs an over, it begs the question over where South Africa expect sustained control to come from. Maharaj can hold up an end all day, while Philander, Paterson and Pretorius can only do it in bursts, and not always to the same effect. They’re all medium pace and in Rabada’s absence, that makes the lack of bite in the attack, more obvious.ALSO READ: Openers bring calm on dramatic day as SA find some fightSouth Africa had a flat morning session, the third in a row when they have been in the field and have not taken a wicket. Hendricks acknowledged they bowled “too full,” and were not as aggressive as they should have been. That changed post-tea. Sibley was eventually caught down the leg-side off Hendricks, ending the first century stand at this venue since 2013.Philander produced a vintage dismissal when he had Crawley caught at first slip, hanging his bat out to the perfect fourth-stump delivery and Paterson had Denley, who was dropped twice, eventually caught at slip. But it’s the wicket of Ben Stokes that will give South Africa the most confidence.Nortje drew Stokes forward as he pushed across, took the edge and van der Dussen, who started this series with several drops, pouched his third, high and to his left. The Wanderers crowd knew the importance of the wicket and some of them took to heckling Stokes as he departed. One of them said something he really didn’t like.”Come say that to to me outside the ground, you f***ing four-eyed c***,” came the reply from Stokes, caught on camera. The repercussions will be known in the coming hours (or days). The fact that it was said at the opposite end of the day to the barb the came from the grandstand tells the story of the ebb and flow of a prickly start to the finale.England would probably consider themselves ahead had they not lost 4 for 50 in the second session but South Africa will know that the mini-collapse is a sign of what could come on a pitch that is expected to quicken up, especially given the condition of their line-up.But there’s a third factor here, that could end up playing a role, however small, in how this series ends: the Johannesburg crowd. They don’t come in the numbers the Barmy Army does or with the pleasantries of the St George’s Park band. They are bunch that don’t shy away from causing a bit of trouble, and won’t stand for any that’s given back to them.

Ratcliffe must get rid of Man Utd figure who dropped a 1/10 v Coventry

On Sunday, Manchester United's co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe embarked on his journey to complete the famous London Marathon.

He crossed the line in four hours and 30 minutes but somehow that would not have been the most stressful and strenuous task of his day.

Just an hour later he was at Wembley for the club's FA Cup semi-final clash with Coventry, a match that very nearly ended in tears for the Red Devils.

Erik ten Hag's men were cruising. 3-0 up and coasting into a showpiece final with rivals, Manchester City, their Championship opposition staged one of the most amazing comebacks we've seen in football.

Manchester United players including Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Truth be told, United should have lost. The encounter went to extra time and as we ticked into the 121st minute, it looked as though Mark Robins' team had stolen a remarkable place in the final.

Cue VAR. Dreaded VAR. Damn you VAR for robbing us of one of the greatest upsets in this great competition's history. Alas, the goal was ruled out for offside and to penalties we went. Casemiro stepped up first but was his spot-kick saved. Surely not? Thankfully not for those in red. United still made it through, by the skin of their teeth.

It is a second final in as many seasons for Ten Hag who notably lifted the Carabao Cup last term. However, should that save him? Arguably not. This United team looks like a sinking ship under the Dutchman and the new ownership must look to get rid this summer, regardless of whether a trophy is brought home.

Where it's gone wrong for Erik ten Hag

How long is a piece of string? Ten Hag arrived in English football with a fine reputation from his days with Ajax but it's safe to say he is not doing a great job this term.

The 20-time English champions may well be into the final of the FA Cup but they have been miles off for large parts of the campaign. They failed to make it through the Champions League group stages and are now seventh in the Premier League, a whopping 16 points off a place at Europe's top table next season.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Finishing in the top four should be a bare minimum for any manager at United. This is one of football's great institutions and they should be challenging for the title.

Sadly, they are a great distance from even being close to that. There are few signs it'll get better in the future either.

Yes, they have suffered long-term injuries to both Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez but that shouldn't alter the way the entire team plays.

Defensively is where they are sorely lacking, however. The Old Trafford club have staggeringly conceded seven goals in injury time of matches since the beginning of February. That could well be seen as bad luck, but it isn't.

Indeed, Ten Hag's defensive methods leave plenty to be desired. According to Understat, Man United are the fifth worst side in the Premier League as far as expected goals (xGA) are concerned with a haul of 63.61. To put that into context, the only sides worse in that department are Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United – the three teams in the relegation zone – and West Ham.

If you're seeking the best result in the division then look no further than Arsenal whose xGA sits at just 25.89. The disparity between the two figures is incredible.

They're not very good at scoring goals either. United may well have found the net three times at Wembley on Sunday evening but in the league, they rank 12th for expected goals (xG) with 50.36. That's even worse than lowly Everton who have been bravely fighting against relegation.

The stats don't paint a pretty picture, and then there are the substitutions. Just before Coventry's comeback started to gather speed, Ten Hag withdrew Garnacho for the ever-dull Antony. Then, at 3-1, off came Kobbie Mainoo, replaced by the ageing Christian Eriksen.

Yes, they should still have been able to see out of the game but it said a lot that the Dutch manager was willing to sacrifice two of his most vibrant players this season.

Omari Forson and Amad Diallo were both introduced in extra time, but by that point, it was too late.

Ten Hag was already fighting for his job before this remarkable encounter at Wembley, but he should really be feeling the pressure now.

Criticism is mounting; Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News even went as far as to hand him a 1/10 rating for how the semi-final played out. Harsh? Yes. But either way, Ten Hag has to go. They are only falling further and further behind the Premier League's best outfits.

Arsenal were rinsed by Emery flop who earned more than Gabriel & Trossard

Arsenal are a completely different team from the one Mikel Arteta took control of in December 2019.

The Spaniard has overseen a total overhaul of the playing squad, philosophy, and mentality and has seen the club go from midtable mediocrity to genuine Premier League and Champions League contenders.

While the transfers made under his tenure have, for the most part, worked out, there has been the odd dud here and there.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

One of those duds actually signed for Unai Emery's Gunners team and then again for Arteta a year later, all the while earning more than Gabriel Magalhães and Leandro Trossard make today.

Gabriel and Trossard's salaries at Arsenal

Gabriel joined the Gunners from French side LOSC Lille in September 2020 for just £23m, and while he was seen as a "liability", in the words of former professional John Giles, for the first couple of years at the club, he has now become one of Arteta's most essential players, with former great Kevin Campbell describing the defender as the "glue" that holds the backline together.

For his impressive displays over the last few years, the São Paulo-born titan has seen his wages rise from £50k-per-week when he first joined the club to £100k-per-week today, and while that's certainly not a small wage, it does seem like value for money in the broader context of Premier League wages.

Trossard only joined the club last January in a £27m transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion, so he is still on his first contract with the club, which stands at £90k-per-week.

Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard celebrating for Arsenal.

In his short time in red and white, the 29-year-old has been nothing short of a revelation, scoring 16 goals and providing 12 assists in 65 games. This means he is averaging a goal involvement every 2.3 games, which is seriously impressive for a player who was originally seen as a backup option for Gabriel Martinelli.

Overall, it would be fair to say that both Arsenal stars are more than justifying their wages at the Emirates this season, which cannot be said for a midfielder who spent two campaigns in north London.

Dani Ceballos' salary at Arsenal

Yes, the player in question is Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, although he doesn't get much game time in the Spanish capital, playing just 571 minutes in total so far this season. This lack of opportunity at his parent club was one of the reasons he was able to spend two seasons on loan with Emery and Arteta's Gunners in 2019/20 and 20/21.

dani-ceballos-arsenal

Now, the first thing to say is that the Utrera-born ace was not a terrible player – far from it – but he was underwhelming and considering he was on a whopping £120k-per-week at the time, it would be fair to say that he didn't live up to expectations.

In his first campaign in north London, he made 37 appearances as a central and attacking midfielder, scoring two goals and providing two assists, and while that wasn't a dreadful return, it didn't justify his wages either.

His second year was even worse, as he scored no goals and provided just two assists in 40 appearances, making it crystal clear that he wasn't good enough to return for a third stint, or permanently, for that matter.

In all, the 27-year-old cost the club a massive £12.1m in wages across the two years he spent in N5, which breaks down to £157k-per-appearnce, £6m-per-goal, or £2.4m-per-assist, which is hardly value for money.

Ultimately, Ceballos wasn't a bad player for Arsenal, but he never truly justified the amount of money that was spent on him for two years, especially when you compare his performances to those of Gabriel and Trossard, who have done far more for the club for less money.

Matt Henry to join New Zealand Test squad as cover for Neil Wagner

Fast bowler Matt Henry has been called up to the New Zealand Test squad as cover for Neil Wagner, who is awaiting the birth of his child. New Zealand Cricket tweeted that Henry will arrive in Wellington on Wednesday evening for the Test starting on Friday, and Wagner will not be joining the squad as he and his wife await the birth of their first child. Wagner will remain in Tauranga until the birth.*Henry will join Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson among the pace options for New Zealand. The Basin Reserve pitch wore a pretty green look with 15-18mm grass two days before the Test, except for a slightly bare patch at one end, which meant the possibility of New Zealand playing four quicks could not be ruled out.Even though Lockie Ferguson had returned to the domestic Ford Trophy, coach Gary Stead had said recently that his “loads aren’t anywhere near for us to be able to consider him for four-day [Test] cricket.” Henry, too, has been playing the Ford Trophy but Stead had said picking Jamieson over Henry in the initial squad was a “tough call”.ALSO READ: Lockie Ferguson not rushing return from calf injuryWhile Jamieson will be in line for a Test debut after impressing in the recent ODIs, Henry has played 12 Tests, including the Sydney game against Australia last month in which he finished with 1 for 94 and 1 for 54 in New Zealand’s 279-run loss before being dropped.Overall, Henry has taken 30 Test wickets in his 12 games with an average exceeding 50. He has played two Tests against India – both in India in 2016 – but it was in the World Cup semi-final last year that he troubled them with his 3 for 37 to set up New Zealand’s win.The hosts will be eager to pose problems for India again, this time because the two Tests count for the World Test Championship, where New Zealand are currently placed sixth with only one win from six games. India, meanwhile, are on top with seven wins from as many games.Test squad: Kane Williamson (capt.) States ask Cricket Australia to open financial books

A proposed drastic reduction in annual grants has left the associations “bemused” and “nonplussed”

A tense balance of power between Cricket Australia and its state association owners has been exposed in the scramble to save money amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the states pushing for a greater explanation of the board’s finances before agreeing to deep cuts in their annual grants.Bemusement among staff at CA’s abrupt turn to drastic salary cuts has been mirrored among the states, which have baulked at proposed reductions to annual grants and asked for more detail of its financial position before accepting cuts that are understood to have grown dramatically deeper in the past week.As recently as 10 days ago, states were preparing for a reduction in annual grants of around 40% for this year, but that is believed to have grown to deeper multi-year cuts and deferments last week. CA has been attempting to secure a A$200 million line of credit from banks after its chief executive Kevin Roberts told staff that the governing body would be out of cash by the end of August without vast cuts being made. These changes have not been met kindly by the states, which signed away their direct control over annual distributions from CA in 2012 along with a move from a 14-member representative board to a nine-member independent model. Rather than being directly linked to revenue fluctuations, the states have each received indexed annual grants, something CA can only alter in the event of “material adverse change” in revenue flows.”As of July 2013 Cricket Australia now receives all gate and signage revenue from international matches and States receive guaranteed revenue (subject to there being no adverse movement in Cricket Australia’s projected revenue),” CA’s 2013-14 financial statement said. “This has resulted in a simplified model and derisks States against volatile movements in gate revenue due to the timing and duration of matches, weather and the competitiveness of touring teams.”That shift brought with it some years of increasingly centralised decision-making at CA, but in 2018 the Newlands scandal and a subsequent cultural review climaxed with the forced resignation of the CA chairman David Peever after the powerful New South Wales chairman John Knox withdrew his support. Peever’s successor Earl Eddings and the chief executive Roberts have worked to improve relationships and communication, but last week’s dramatic change of tack has ruffled a lot of feathers.A batsman and a bowler go about their work on the cricket field•Getty Images

All states had already taken various cost-saving measures, with the most dramatic coming in South Australia as 23 staff and contractors were cut by the SACA. Others are at varying points of financial distress, but all appear to agree that more haggling is required.”Queensland Cricket – like all sporting bodies – is keen to return to training and play, although at this stage no one is certain when this will be possible,” QC’s chief executive Terry Svenson said. “We continue to work closely with Cricket Australia, and given their recent announcements, we know that there are likely to be changes to our organisation if funding distribution agreements were to change. Queensland Cricket continues to plan for several scenarios which might unfold given the uncertainty we are faced with in this disruptive environment.”Senior figures in other states have commented that CA’s latest measures “appear to have come from left field” and smack of “unnecessary panic”, leaving states “bemused” and “nonplussed”. The governing body had already been basing its plans for next summer on a projected loss of 50% of annual revenue.Urgent discussions between CA, state associations and the Australian Cricketers Association continued over the weekend, after Roberts informed staff on Thursday that all but a handful of employees would be stood down on 20% of their usual pay until July. There are concerns among CA staff that this move is the start of a drastic downsizing of the organisation that will leave huge numbers of cricket employees entirely out of work later this year.Certainly this was the message being pushed by the former Australian captain and now Fox Sports commentator Adam Gilchrist, a former housemate of Roberts, who told that player wages could be set back more than 20 years by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.”Without being aware of any numbers and the financial side of it, I wouldn’t be surprised if we go back a decade or two to the level of payment that players get. Even maybe further for a while,” Gilchrist said. “It’s going to get stripped back, right back. Support staff numbers have to get dragged back. The revenue is going to go down significantly, 50 per cent they [CA] are banking on at the moment and that’s an optimistic position I believe. The players will take a whack.”Mark Taylor, the former CA board director who also resigned in 2018, argued that cuts to player pay would need to be dictated by how much cricket is able to played next summer, as they have a fixed revenue percentage share in every MoU signed between CA and the ACA since the late 1990s.”There will be haircuts, as we’ve seen from CA staff. Players will be next,” Taylor said on Nine. “I also suspect that Cricket Australia and the ACA have been working together on this. I hope they get their heads together and sort out a good solution for the near future. Six months is a long time. It may not be long enough in this pandemic, but it might be long enough to get some cricket in October, which may save Cricket Australia and the players from taking too big a haircut. Nobody has a crystal ball to work out when and how much this will affect cricket.”In terms of forward planning, states are believed to have been planning for the Big Bash League and WBBL teams to be the first programs to return to action next season, the reverse of the traditional rhythm in which state squads and support staff report for pre-season training first, ahead of the Sheffield Shield and one-day cup competitions.
