Hampshire stint on hold as Dimuth Karunaratne enters frame for Sri Lanka World Cup captaincy

Sri Lanka’s selectors now strongly considering handing the ODI reins to Karunaratne for the World Cup

Dimuth Karunaratne’s forthcoming stint with the Hampshire county side may be cancelled, with Sri Lanka’s selectors now strongly considering handing the ODI reins to Karunaratne for the World Cup.Hampshire had signed Karunaratne as their overseas player in February, but Karunaratne has now been asked to remain in Sri Lanka through April, in order to play the provincial one-day tournament, during which the selectors will assess his suitability for the Sri Lanka one-day side.Karunaratne has not played an ODI since the last World Cup, and has been pigeon-holed as a Test batsman, partly owing to poor returns in the one-day format – his average is 15.83 after 17 matches. But as Lasith Malinga’s one-day captaincy is yet to yield a victory for Sri Lanka in nine matches, the selectors are considering a left-field move.”The selectors haven’t confirmed anything, but they’ve told me to keep in mind there’s a possibility I could become one-day captain,” Karunaratne told ESPNcricinfo. “They’ve asked me to stay back for the provincial tournament. If I get picked for the World Cup squad, there will be camps and training after that as well, so I might not be able to go to Hampshire in those months.”Although Karunaratne does not generally score as quickly as your standard ODI batsman, there is now a hope he will be able to hold Sri Lanka’s innings together. In recent years, Sri Lanka has frequently lost early wickets. They were unable to last the full fifty overs in any of the four full ODIs they just played in South Africa. The selectors have also been impressed with Karunaratne’s ability to band the team together in tough situations. Sri Lanka’s recent historic upset against South Africa in Tests was partly credited to the manner in which Karunaratne was able to coax the best from a group of inexperienced players. Several of the stars of that series have since paid tribute to Karunaratne’s leadership. In an interview with , chief selector Ashantha de Mel said his committee wants “to see what Dimuth did for the Test team, with the ODI team”. Angelo Mathews, de Mel said, was also in the frame for the captaincy, because Mathews was “someone who has been accepted by everyone in the team”.”But we are also looking at Dimuth,” he said.Through all this, it is still not clear if Malinga will lose his job – the selectors have not ruled out his captaincy for the World Cup either. Essentially, at present, there are three possible choices for captaincy, each with its drawbacks. Karunaratne is not thought of as a one-day player; Mathews is often injured, and although Malinga is both an automatic choice in the one-day XI, and has been fit over the past few months, the selectors do not believe he has the full support of the dressing room.In any case, Karunaratne has not done his chances any harm by hitting 109 off 115 balls for Sinhalese Sports Club in the semi-final of the Premier Limited Over tournament on Sunday.

Liverpool are "ready" to sign off a bid for an "immense" new centre-back

Liverpool are reportedly showing an interest in signing an "immense" young defender, and the latest report even claims the club have got their cheque book ready to go.

Liverpool need defensive reinforcements as injuries mount

The Reds have a fantastic squad capable of battling on all fronts this season, but arguably the biggest area of concern is at the back. Joel Matip will play no part in the remainder of the campaign because of a serious knee injury, while Ibrahima Konate is a player who finds it difficult to stay fit for sustained periods of time and both Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are out as well.

Jarell Quansah has impressed greatly this season but is still a work in progress, and Joe Gomez has been used more as a full-back due to the problems on the left side, admittedly enjoying some excellent form.

For that reason, a new centre-back would make sense in January, giving Jurgen Klopp more options in the Premier League title race, and meaning that an injury to Van Dijk or Konate would not be too fatal.

Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi has been linked with a move to Liverpool, although a January purchase could be difficult, while Sporting CP's Goncalo Inacio is a player who has been backed to move to Anfield so often in recent months. It now looks as though the Reds are eyeing up another impressive candidate to come in and make a difference – one who will not be arriving on the cheap.

Liverpool "ready" to sign a cheque for Leny Yoro

According to Le 10 Sport [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are keen on signing Lille centre-back Leny Yoro, but face strong competition for a number of their Premier League rivals.

Manchester United and Manchester City are also considered potential suitors for the 18-year-old, and the Reds know that they will be need to spend an "astronomical sum" to sign him. They are thought to be "ready to sign a nice cheque" for his services, though.

Yoro looks like a footballer of huge potential, so the idea of Liverpool snapping him up this month is mouthwatering, seeing him as a long-term addition, but also someone who could make a big impact from the off.

Incredibly, the Frenchman is two years younger than Quansah but is already an undoubted key man for Lille, starting 15 matches in Ligue 1 so far this season. He has been hailed as an "immense" player by journalist Antonio Mango, who has also praised his "silent leadership" and "composure in and out of possession".

Yoro's price tag is clearly the biggest issue, especially if FSG aren't willing to back Klopp with huge funds in the January transfer window, but he is a player with the potential to develop into an elite centre-back, so it could be worth the gamble.

The likes of United and City being interested also won't make it easy for Liverpool to sign the Lille starlet, but he may look at how Klopp has turned things around this season and feel that Anfield is the most exciting destination in England currently.

Sky Sports say West Ham are looking at signing 28 y/o who Declan Rice loves

West Ham are looking at signing a 28-year-old who has an admirer in former Irons captain Declan Rice, according to broadcast giant Sky Sports.

Moyes after new January additions

Manager David Moyes watched on as his West Ham side crashed out of the FA Cup on Tuesday evening, with Bristol City sealing a 1-0 win over the east Londoners at Ashton Gate.

"Very interesting" – Sky reporter surprised as West Ham eye "unique" target

Michael Bridge says they’re looking at him.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 16, 2024

West Ham fielded a pretty weakened eleven and were forced to pay for their considerable lack of depth. The hardly-seen Maxwel Cornet partly made up a front three of the Ivorian, exit-linked Said Benrahma and out-of-favour striker Danny Ings – with the trio failing to find a way past the home side's defence.

It is believed Moyes is keen to make January signings in key areas to bolster the squad before January 31. Michail Antonio will be absent for an extended period after his injury setback alongside Lucas Paqueta, while Mohammed Kudus is currently at the Africa Cup of Nations with Ghana.

The Hammers are targeting a new forward in particular, with technical director Tim Steidten thought to be eyeing up Sunderland winger Jack Clarke among other options. It will be interesting to see if they can add more quality and strengthen yet another charge for European qualification under Moyes, with Sky now claiming Steidten and co are interested in Man City outcast Kalvin Phillips as well.

West Ham looking at signing Phillips

As per the broadcaster, West Ham are looking at signing Phillips in January alongside a few other English top-flight sides.

The 28-year-old is surplus to requirement at Eastlands with City willing to let him go before the deadline. Alongside West Ham, it is thought Crystal Palace, Everton, Newcastle and Serie A giants Juventus are targeting Phillips.

Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The England international will prove a costly deal, which is West Ham's main obstacle in their pursuit, but he's been heavily endorsed in past seasons by former star Declan Rice. Rice, commenting on Phillips to talkSPORT, called him "one of the best" for his sheer professionalism – which could be an attractive trait for Moyes.

“He’s one of the best professionals I’ve ever seen, if I’m honest with you," said Rice.

“I’ve seen players who don’t play and throw their toys out of the pram completely and with Kal, every time he comes back here he pops on a shirt and puts in 110 per cent."

However, a sticking point may be Phillips' injury record and his wages – which Sky claim are at around £135,000-per-week.

Seamers strike early as Yorkshire tighten grip at Ageas Bowl

Hampshire 74 for 3 trail Yorkshire 554 for 7 dec (Ballance 148, Root 94, Leaning 77*, Lyth 67) by 480 runs
Opening bowlers Duanne Olivier and Ben Coad continued Yorkshire’s dominance in their Specsavers County Championship match with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl – after Gary Ballance had top-scored with 148, Hampshire’s James Vince and Joe Weatherley both departed inside the first six overs to leave Hampshire 11 for 2, after Yorkshire had declared having scored a mammoth 554.Hampshire had been given 26 overs to starve out Coad, Olivier and co, but struggled against good quality seam movement. Having watched their Hampshire counterparts labour on a very slow pancake of a wicket, Coad and Olivier extracted more out of the surface.Firstly, Vince, who has promoted himself to the top of the innings with the hope of earning an Ashes spot, was caught by Tom Kohler-Cadmore at first slip while attempting a block in the fifth over.An over later and Weatherley was on the receiving end of South African fast bowler Olivier’s fierce chest-high bouncer – with the academy graduate guiding an edge behind.Aiden Markram and Sam Northeast steadied the ship in gloomy conditions, but the South African international fell after an enterprising 45 to the part-time off-spin of Jack Leaning when he picked out Ballance at deep midwicket – leaving Hampshire 74 for 3 at stumps.Yorkshire had piled on 554 runs over five sessions with five players managing to pass a half-century – something the county hadn’t managed since 2014.Ballance and Joe Root had placed the visitors into a strong position on day one having put on 182 for the third wicket, while Adam Lyth also reached fifty.Root had fallen for six the previous evening, while Ballance had reached an unbeaten 120 overnight and continued in a similarly modest style. He and night-watchman Steven Patterson added 80 runs for the fourth wicket, although the latter was given a life when he was dropped by Markram running back from first slip.Ballance has an impeccable Ageas Bowl record and passed 1,000 first class runs at the ground when he reached 141.But he departed having added seven more runs when Gareth Berg snared him with a quality bouncer – which he glanced behind while attempting to evade.Berg, who had gone wicketless in the season opener against Essex, then added a second in the space of four overs as Patterson slashed to Liam Dawson at point.Runs continued to trump wickets as Kohler-Cadmore and Leaning pushed the score through the 400 mark.Kohler-Cadmore departed for 41 when he was lbw to the hard-working Liam Dawson, but Leaning continued to a half century – brought up in 116 balls.Jonny Tattersall, who made his debut in the corresponding fixture last year, joined Leaning at the crease and added a further 95 for the seventh wicket.Despite Yorkshire continuing to eke out runs, they didn’t come at a great rate – with the innings hovering around 3.3 runs per over throughout.Tattersall, who was dropped on 23 by legside boundary rider Fidel Edwards, scored his 500th first-class run when he reached six before scoring his half century in 79 balls.Dawson was again rewarded for toiling through 60 overs, a record in an innings on this ground, when he found a leading edge off Tattersall’s bat – with Vince completing the catch at cover.Dawson ended with analysis of three for 184 from his epic vigil with the ball.Yorkshire skipper Steven Patterson called his batsmen in soon after to declare on 554 for seven, with Leaning left on 77 not out, before his bowlers made early breakthroughs.

Spurs could land "sublime" Maddison partner after Alasdair Gold claim

Tottenham Hotspur have already made two additions to their side during the January transfer window and are now reportedly eyeing up a Championship starlet…

Spurs' interest in an England U21 international

According to Alasdair Gold in football.london, Spurs are one of the clubs keeping tabs on Norwich City hotshot Jonathan Rowe after his electric season so far.

The journalist's report claims that the Lilywhites are monitoring the England U21 international's situation amid interest from other, unnamed, Premier League clubs.

Norwich forward Jonathan Rowe.

There is, however, no mention of how much it would cost to secure his signature or whether a deal would be done this month or in the summer, should a team make a move for his services.

Ange Postecoglou could sign an exciting partner for James Maddison at the top end of the pitch by winning the race to land the young winger.

James Maddison's creative brilliance

The England international hit the ground running in North London after his permanent switch from Leicester City ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Maddison has proven himself to be a terrific creator who can split open opposition defences almost at will to provide his teammates with high-quality opportunities in front of goal.

As you can see in the table above, the former Norwich star has been one of the best creators and one of the most progressive talents in his position in the Premier League this season.

He could be the perfect midfielder to play alongside Rowe in the attacking set-up for Spurs as the Canaries youngster is a player who has the potential to make the most of Maddison's creativity.

Jonathan Rowe's finishing quality

The Norwich star has burst onto the scene in the Championship this season and showcased his quality in the final third as a ruthless finisher from either wing.

He is comfortable on the left or the right flank and is adept at using both feet. The 20-year-old whiz has scored five with his right foot, four with his left, and three with his head in all competitions.

This shows that he is a complete finisher who can use either foot or his head to find the back of the net, whilst the Yellows wizard has also been efficient in front of goal.

Rowe, whose recent goal against Hull – as shown above – was described as "absolutely sublime" by podcaster HLTCO, has scored 11 Championship goals from 4.29 Expected Goals in 25 appearances this season.

He has significantly outperformed the quality of chances that his teammates have provided him with, whilst scoring in a variety of ways, and this suggests that the Spurs target would thrive alongside Maddison if the 5 foot 8 gem can make the step up to the top-flight.

The current Tottenham star has the ability to create high-quality chances at an impressive rate and he could, therefore, provide Rowe with the opportunities he needs to find the back of the net week-in-week-out for Postecoglou, which is why they could be an exciting pairing for the club.

With just a day to go before the Tuesday deadline set by the ICC, West Indies remain the only team yet to announce their squad for the upcoming World Cup.ESPNcricinfo understand Cricket West Indies (CWI) will submit the 15-man squad to the ICC on Tuesday, but will announce the squad only on Wednesday afternoon in Barbados (1.30 pm local time). The squad will be picked by the freshly appointed interim selection panel chaired by Robert Haynes, along with Jimmy Adams (director of cricket) and West Indies’ newly appointed coach Floyd Reifer.Although Jason Holder will continue to be the captain and Chris Gayle will almost certainly play his fifth World Cup, questions remain over the participation of the country’s other superstars, who have been successful in the last five years in domestic T20 leagues around the world. Will Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, and even Dwayne Bravo, who opted to retire from international cricket last year, find a spot? Will Marlon Samuels, who has recovered from his knee injury, get the opportunity to play his fourth World Cup?The hope comes from a new administration taking charge at CWI. Ricky Skerritt, the newly elected president of CWI, who was also once the manager of the West Indies team at the turn of the millennium, had said that the selectors will be looking at all available options. The key questions for the selectors concern the two allrounders that would feature in addition to Holder. Will it be Russell and Carols Brathwaite? Who will be Gayle’s opening partner, Evin Lewis or John Campbell? Who among Devendra Bishoo, Ashley Nurse and Fabian Allen will be part of the spinners’ group? Who among Keemo Paul, Sheldon Cottrell and Shannon Gabriel will accompany Kemar Roach in the fast bowling group? Will Nicholas Pooran make it as the back-up wicketkeeper? With about 24 hours left for squad to be finalised, ESPNcricinfo has listed the key names Haynes’ selection panel will deliberate on.
