Firpo ditched among 3 changes in Leeds’ predicted lineup vs Swansea

Leeds United return to action at Elland Road on Wednesday night as they prepare to host Welsh side Swansea City in the Championship.

The Whites are currently third in the table and are on the hunt to chase down the top two in the division – Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

They gained one point on the Tractor Boys over the weekend and now sit seven points behind them but are ten off the Foxes at the summit – despite securing a 1-0 win over Enzo Maresca's side earlier this month.

This means that it will take a colossal effort for Leeds to overtake those above them to earn an automatic promotion place but they still have 29 more matches to gain ground and secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Daniel Farke's side need to focus on their own results and hope that other teams slip up along the way and three points against Swansea this week could be an important step on their way to success.

They head into this game off the back of a frustrating 1-1 draw away at Rotherham United last Friday, with Crysencio Summerville scoring the only goal of the game for the Whites.

Farke could now make some alterations to the starting XI for that match in the hope of a return to winning ways against the Swans at Elland Road.

1 Illan Meslier

Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Between the sticks, French ace Illan Meslier could retain his position in goal. He has started all 17 of the club's league games this term and there were no major errors against Rotherham to warrant him being dropped for this clash.

2 Archie Gray

Archie Gray for Leeds United.

The 17-year-old starlet – Archie Gray – could continue to impress at right-back, away from his natural position in midfield. He won seven of his 12 duels against the Millers and won two tackles for the team.

3 Joe Rodon

At the heart of the defence, Joe Rodon should start again after a dominant display last Friday night. The Tottenham Hotspur loanee has been an impressive addition to the squad and showcased his quality last week.

Leeds titan with 90% duels won was Farke's true hero over Summerville on Friday

The impressive colossus stood up to the task on Friday night against Rotherham.

ByDan Emery Nov 25, 2023

As you can read in the article above, he dominated the opposition with his defensive prowess and deserves to keep his place in the XI after that performance.

4 Pascal Struijk

Leeds defender Pascal Struijk.

The first change that the head coach could make to the XI is to bring Pascal Struijk back into the side in place of the experienced Liam Cooper.

He started on the bench against Rotherham after dealing with a hernia over the international break but was pressed into action with ten minutes to go as Cooper was forced off with a knock.

The Dutch colossus has started 15 of the club's 17 Championship matches and could come straight back into the XI after being rested for the majority of last week's clash.

5 Sam Byram

At left-back, Farke could make another change to his team with Sam Byram coming back in for Junior Firpo, who could be ditched after his first start of the campaign.

The former Barcelona defender lost eight of his 16 duels and only competed one of his three attempted dribbles throughout his 70 minutes on the pitch.

It was a sloppy display from the full-back and Byram, who was an unused substitute after recovering from a knock, could return to the line-up.

The English titan has started 13 Championship matches so far this season and contributed with 2.9 tackles and interceptions per game for the Whites.

Since joining on a free transfer from Norwich City, the veteran defender has been a strong defensive presence for the German boss and could play a key role tonight with his ability to win possession back for the team if selected on the left.

6 Glen Kamara

joe-rodon-glen-kamara-leeds-opinion

The Finland international has been a superb addition from Scottish giants Rangers and should start in midfield. He has been calmness personified in possession with a pass success rate of 92% for the Whites.

7 Ethan Ampadu

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

Like Kamara, Ethan Amapdu has been in impressive form for Leeds since his summer switch from Premier League side Chelsea and should start in the middle of the park. The Wales international has made 3.6 tackles and interceptions per game so far in the Championship.

8 Ian Poveda

The third and final change to the XI could be Ian Poveda being unleashed on the right side of the attack in place of Wales international Daniel James.

Poveda completed 100% of his attempted passes and one dribble in 20 minutes off the bench against Rotherham after the former Manchester United forward endured a difficult night.

James only found a teammate with 59% of his attempted passes and failed with all four of his attempted dribbles. The lightweight lost all seven of his duels throughout the game and could now lose his place in the XI as a result of that disappointing display.

Farke hailed Poveda as a "creative" talent who has impressed in training and could unleash him from the start for the second time in the league this term.

9 Joel Piroe

Leeds forward Joel Piroe.

In the number ten position, Joel Piroe could keep his place after a return of one goal, three key passes, and one 'big chance' created in his last two league outings for the Yorkshire-based side. He has plundered six Championship goals in total since his move from Wednesday night's opponents.

10 Crysencio Summerville

rutter-summerville-leeds-opinion

Arguably the easiest decision that Farke has to make with this XI. Crysencio Summerville scored his seventh league goal of the season in the draw with Rotherham with a superb curled effort into the bottom corner and is able to provide a huge attacking threat on the left flank.

Ollie Pope to leave Sri Lanka and join up with England Lions

The Surrey batsman will leave the Test party in order for him to get game time with the Lions in the UAE

England will release batsman Ollie Pope from their Test party in Sri Lanka, in order for him to get game time with the Lions, who are embarking on a tour of the UAE to play Pakistan A in all formats.Pope made his Test debut in the summer against India, scoring 54 runs in three innings, but the performance of Ben Foakes on debut in Galle has limited his chances of making further appearances in Sri Lanka. Pope was initially included as the spare middle-order batsman in the squad, but Foakes was called up after an injury to Jonny Bairstow and subsequently scored a century to help set up England’s victory in the first Test. With Bairstow working back to fitness and pushing for a return to the team, and Joe Denly also in the squad, England have a surplus of batting options. The management has therefore decided that Pope would be better served playing than ferrying drinks. He will leave for the UAE on Wednesday, the first day of the second Test in Pallakele.”It is important that Ollie is playing and the selection panel felt that to aid his development the best course of action is for to him to go and play for the Lions in a competitive series against Pakistan A,” Trevor Bayliss, England’s head coach, said.”Ollie needs some game time before the West Indies Test tour early next year and will get more out of playing competitively for the Lions rather than spending the next three weeks in Sri Lanka on the sidelines. He will get the opportunity of playing up to eight matches across all formats in the UAE.”England Lions play one four-day match in Abu Dhabi, starting on November 18, followed by five unofficial ODIs and two T20s.

Pochettino must unleash "unreal" Chelsea youngster to ease Gallagher blow

Of all the traditional 'big six' sides in the Premier League this year, Chelsea have perhaps had the most confusing season.

The Blues started the season in a vein of form no better than last year before going on to thrash Tottenham Hotspur away – while they were top of the league – and holding treble-winning Manchester City to a 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge.

It looked like Mauricio Pochettino's men had turned a corner, only for them to fall to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat away to Newcastle United, which was then followed by a win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Conor Gallagher for Chelsea

In short, the Blues have been consistently inconsistent this year. Still, they could find the game against Manchester United later today even more challenging without their stand-in captain, Conor Gallagher.

The 23-year-old was shown two yellow cards against the Seagulls and will, therefore, be absent for the trip to Old Trafford; while this is undoubtedly a problem for the Pensioners, they have one surprise option: play Noni Madueke.

Noni Madueke's stats this season

Gallagher's sending off on the weekend firmly put the breaks on what has been a relatively impressive season for the Epsom-born midfielder so far this year.

He has gone from a bit part player who looked destined to leave the club over the summer to one that has been given the captain's armband in Reece James' absence – another red card mind – and has generally looked like one of the best players whenever he steps out onto the pitch, registering four assists already this season.

Unfortunately, though, his mindlessness on Sunday has left his manager in the lurch as, despite spending an exorbitant amount of money on new players in the summer, there isn't really a natural replacement for Gallagher in the squad, or is there?

Noni Madueke.

Madueke has been slowly growing into a more prominent role at Chelsea following his £30m move in January, and while he is still firmly a bench player, he has shown glimpses of brilliance along the way.

A goal in the EFL Cup, some impactful substitute appearances, and an impressive record with England's U21s suggest a player ready to make a name for himself at Stanford Bridge. His numbers for this season, while from a much smaller sample size, aren't that much worse than Gallagher's.

The "unreal" 21-year-old, as described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, certainly looks more of a goal threat, and while his passing numbers don't match up, that is fairly understandable given the role he is expected to fulfil in the team.

Now, were he to be played in the central midfield position that has been occupied by Gallagher this evening, we might just see those improve, and while he has played on the wing for the Blues, he was frequently deployed in central midfield as a youth player.

Noni Madueke's stats in central midfield

Now, it has been quite some time since the former PSV man played in the centre of the park – just shy of three years, to be exact – but he was deployed there fairly frequently as a youth player, both for PSV's junior sides and England's U16/17 sides.

He has made 14 competitive appearances as a central midfielder, racking up three goals one assist and coming out on the winning side on eight occasions, only losing three games.

The other benefit to playing the "brilliant" – as described by former Chelsea player Pat Nevin – youngster in midfield is that it will allow Pochettino to field a front three of Raheem Sterling, Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer, which could be the perfect attack to run amok against a fragile and totally demoralised Man United side.

Ultimately, it will be risky to play Madueke in this role, but given his youth-level experience, the lack of proper alternatives in the side, and the prospect of fielding that front three, it might be the best option for Pochettino.

INÍCIO AVASSALADOR DO PEIXE

PEIXE CONTROLA AS AÇÕES

O Peixe controlou as ações. Cuca preservou o pendurado Soteldo. O Alvinegro até criou algumas oportunidades em contra-ataques rápidos, mas tanto Madson, quanto Kaio Jorge pararam no goleiro Andrada.

O’Neil could unearth surprise Moutinho heir in Wolves’ "intelligent" 21 y/o gem

Wolverhampton Wanderers' midfield has seen quite a big transformation in recent seasons. Having had Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Leander Dendoncker battling it out among the best players in the Premier League in the middle of the park, supporters now watch Mario Lemina, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Joao Gomes regularly.

Moutinho, in particular, was a symbol that Wolves meant business under the Fosun Group. Having played at clubs such as Porto, Monaco and Sporting CP, the acquisition of the experienced midfielder made a few clubs stand up and take notice, given Nuno Espirito Santo's side were just promoted to the top-flight when the Portugal international joined the club for merely £5m.

Wolves central midfielder Joao Moutinho.

The Midlands club certainly got their money's worth as the veteran remained at Molineux for five seasons before departing on a free during the recent summer window. However, the club may currently possess the heir to Moutinho's throne.

Moutinho's stats at Wolves

Despite being on the wrong side of 30 when he joined from Monaco in 2018, Moutinho went on to make 212 appearances for Wolves throughout his five-year stint at the club which is more than he made at Porto. Interestingly, in all five Premier League campaigns, the Portuguese midfielder missed merely 15 games, playing all 38 league matches in his first two seasons.

Despite having three managers at Molineux, Moutinho maintained his place in the team right up until the very end.

There was a slight drop in game-time towards the end of his spell with Wolves, but this is understandable given he was 36 when he left the club a few months back. Furthermore, at Wolves, Moutinho became a key creative outlet for the team, recording 25 assists for the club, including 21 in his first two seasons, according to Transfermarkt.

Wolves have tried to replicate Moutinho's quality on the pitch by purchasing Joao Gomes from Brazilian outfit Flamengo back in January for £15m but no player has quite managed to reach his standards just yet. However, there may be one youngster out on loan who is waiting to fill the Portuguese's boots.

Luke Cundle's stats this season

Having broken through the academy in 2019 to make his competitive debut, Luke Cundle featured seven times for the Old Gold overall before being handed the first loan spell of his infant career at Swansea City in the Championship. It was in Wales that the Swans' former head coach Russell Martin was left hugely wholly impressed with Cundle's ability, describing the player as "intelligent" and "technically gifted".

Upon returning, the 21-year-old wasn't in Wolves boss Gary O'Neil's plans for the forthcoming season and was sent back out on a temporary basis, this time to newly promoted second-tier outfit Plymouth Argyle. With the Pilgrims, Cundle has been excelling and has bagged four goals and five assists in 18 appearances in all competitions, which is more goal contributions than any other Wolves player.

Statistically, the Wolves loanee is performing better than Gomes this season and is keeping up with Moutinho's record from the previous campaign.

In possession, the 5 foot 7 Cundle is much closer to the diminutive Moutinho than Gomes and is a more similar player to the parted Portuguese than the Brazilian. Given his impressive displays for Plymouth, O'Neil should certainly look to bring Cundle back as soon as possible to be the rightful, yet perhaps surprise heir to the veteran's throne.
