Ryan Higgins shows his class as Ben Stokes finds his bowling boots

Clark’s stunning Roses hat-trick stuns Yorkshire

ScorecardA maiden first-class century from Ryan Higgins put Gloucestershire in a decent position on the opening day of the Specasavers County Championship match with Durham at Cheltenham. The 23-year-old former Middlesex all-rounder was out in the last over of the day for 105 as his side ran up 315 for seven after winning the toss. Miles Hammond (51) and Gareth Roderick (67) were the other main contributors.Chris Rushworth and Ben Stokes each claimed three of the wickets, Stokes beginning with a seven-over spell that brought him 2 for 10. But Durham’s other England bowler Mark Wood was off the field having physiotherapy during the afternoon and, although he returned to the field, he bowled only six overs in the day.Stokes was the star of the early exchanges, generating pace and bounce from the Chapel End after coming on first change. He pinned Chris Dent lbw for 19 and had Benny Howell taken at gully off a sharply lifting delivery for four after Gloucestershire had elected to bat in bright sunshine. In between the two wickets Stokes struck James Bracey a painful blow on an elbow. After treatment the 21-year-old batsman headed off to hospital for a more extensive examination.Ben Stokes was back in action•Getty Images

Hammond, already a centurion at the Festival, again looked in fine form, putting on 40 with Dent for the first wicket. The left-hander was unbeaten on 36 at lunch, which was taken with Gloucestershire 80 for two off 28 overs.Hammond went on to a half-century off 97 balls, with 9 fours. But he fell early in the afternoon session, bowled by Rushworth, who beat his defensive shot.Roderick survived a couple of blows to the helmet on the lively pitch to post fifty off 93 deliveries, with 8 fours, and shared a fourth-wicket stand of 107 with Higgins to put their side on top.Tea was taken at 218 for three, with Higgins having brought up his half-century off 67 balls, hitting six fours. It was an untimely interval for Roderick, who in the first over after the resumption fell lbw to Salisbury on the back foot.Higgins went past his previous best score of 63 and set his sights on three figures. The injured Bracey returned to help add 64 before departing to the second new ball, an lbw victim for Rushworth.Kieran Noema-Barnett fell cheaply to the same bowler, but Higgins punched the air at reaching his ton off 141 balls, having increased his boundary count to 12.He was caught at backward point off what proved the final delivery of the day to his intense frustration, Stokes claiming a third wicket. He ended the day with three for 40 from an impressive 18.4 overs, while Rushworth had three for 82 off 20.

Chris Wright begins his Warwickshire sign-off in style

ScorecardWarwickshire totally dominated the opening day of their Specsavers County Championship match against Gloucestershire at Edgbaston, closing on 171 for 2 after bowling the visitors out for 127.On their first Championship visit to Birmingham for ten years, Gloucestershire must have wished they had stayed away longer after their illness and injury-affected side folded spectacularly in the afternoon session.Experienced seamer Chris Wright led the demolition with 5 for 32 as the visitors, having reached 52 without loss, lost all ten wickets for 75 runs in 27.4 overs. Well though Wright and his colleagues bowled, they were abetted by some feckless batting with several wickets due to shots more suited to white-ball cricket. The Division One leaders then built ruthlessly on their bowlers’ work as openers Will Rhodes (101 not out) and Dominic Sibley (65) took them past Gloucestershire’s score. There was no clue as to the carnage ahead as Gloucestershire openers Miles Hammond and Chris Dent put 50 on the board but then they fell in successive overs. Hammond edged Ryan Sidebottom behind and Dent was trapped lbw by Jeetan Patel.A stand of 49 between James Bracey and Benny Howell took the score to a respectable 101 for 2 but Patel’s dismissal of the former, lbw, just before lunch paved the way for a post-lunch dismantling of the innings.Wright, who will join Leicestershire on a two-year contract after this season, started the collapse in the first over of the afternoon when Howell lifted carelessly to point. The seamer then knocked out Ryan Higgins’ off-stump before Keith Barker removed Ben Charlesworth, caught behind, and Craig Miles who pulled to midwicket.Miles was not the first batsman to contribute to his own downfall and nor was he the last as George Drissell lifted Wright to mid-off. That left the former Middlesex and Essex seamer within sight of his 11th first-class five-for which he duly completed by making a mess of Matt Taylor’s stumps and trapping Gareth Roderick lbw.Gloucestershire having scored 21 for 7 in 13 overs after lunch, Rhodes and Sibley rattled up 69 in 16 overs up to tea to complete perhaps the most one-sided session in the history of the county championship. The opening pair added 161 before Sibley inside-edged Higgins on to his pad and was caught at gully. Nightwatchman Wright soon fell lbw to Chris Liddle but Rhodes posted his third Championship century of the season in the penultimate over of near-perfect day for as the Division Two leaders.

Arsenal could sign their own Haaland in £40m target dubbed a "machine man"

Arsenal are reportedly already turning their attention to the January transfer window, with new reports linking the Gunners to one of the finest talents in Europe.

Mikel Arteta’s side have started the Premier League season unbeaten, with only north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur winning more points than them so far in the 2023/24 league campaign.

The north Londoners will be hoping to improve on their second-place finish of last term, with changes made to narrow the gap from the top in the summer, as four new faces arrived at the Emirates.

Squad depth was a detrimental theme in the case of Arsenal denying themselves their first league title since 2004, and with a host of quality acquisitions on board, only time will tell if the recruitment was sufficient enough.

Looking towards the fast-approaching January window, the Gunners have been linked with a number of talents already, with one position in particular prevailing as an area for attention in the market.

Arsenal January transfer targets

Acquiring a proven goalscorer doesn’t come cheap in today’s market, which Arsenal may discover in the winter window as three names capable of leading the line have emerged as potential targets.

For €100m (£87m), the Gunners could seek Feyenoord talisman Santiago Gimenez, who 90min claim Arteta’s side are admirers of along with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez.

The Mexican has already scored 15 goals in 12 appearances this season, making his hefty price tag self-explanatory as he continues to dominate the Eredivisie at just 22 years old.

Closer to home, another player said to be worth nine figures is Brentford striker Ivan Toney, who is claimed to be on the wishlist of Arsenal, however at the point of his return from his ban, the Bees are expected to demand £100m for his services.

There’s no denying the quality of the Englishman, who is an established scorer in the Premier League with 32 top-flight goals over the last two seasons combined, but whether the Gunners could facilitate such an expense for the 27-year-old is questionable.

New reports have shed light on another potentially exciting talisman for the north Londoners to consider, with the Mirror speculating that RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko is a target to bring to the Emirates.

The report claims that the 20-year-old rejected Manchester United last summer, and is now being ‘monitored’ by Arsenal as a potential new addition to the front line.

Benjamin Sesko for RB Leipzig

It’s said that Leipzig value their striker, who only arrived in July from RB Salzburg, at just £40m, which could be considered a low fee for his talent with his market value reading €50m (£43m) – via CIES Football Observatory.

Despite his relative youth, the Slovenian is showing great promise in his scoring abilities in Europe, making him a highly exciting prospect for Arsenal to weigh up.

The stats that show Benjamin Sesko would be a good signing for Arsenal

The Gunners have seen some magnificent strikers lead the line over the years, with Thierry Henry being the benchmark in north London for many to try and reach.

It’s notable that identifying a reliable goalscorer is something that is missing from Arteta’s current crop of talent, which was highlighted earlier this season by pundit Gary Neville.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the Manchester United legend explained how Arsenal are missing a forward that can be an instinctual finisher, describing the demographic of player that the north Londoners require as one who “senses where the ball is going to land.”

As portrayed in the table above, it’s clear that Sesko is a more prolific scorer than the two traceable number nine’s that Arteta currently has at his disposal.

What’s most interesting is that while his numbers at Salzburg were impressive for a teenager, he has begun to translate his “machine man” status in Germany, as he was once lauded by talent scout Jacek Kulig.

In the Bundesliga this term, the Slovenian has netted three goals from only two starts, averaging a scoring frequency of 71 minutes to highlight his clinical nature in front of goal.

While Jesus arrived last summer with experience in playing in the Premier League, the Brazilian can’t be labelled a prolific finisher, with him still yet to score more than 14 goals in a league season.

The forward would be an undeniably strong signing for Arsenal to replenish their strike department, with Sesko’s no-nonsense finishing qualities already baring similarities to one of the Premier League’s best.

Benjamin Sesko’s playing style

Previously dubbed a “complete forward” by Kulig, the scout likened the striker's playing style to that of Erling Haaland back in 2021 when he was just 18.

Since then, the comparisons have continued to grow, with the official Bundesliga site stating the 20-year-old has ‘shades of’ the Manchester City hitman.

Scouting site Breaking the Lines described the forward’s finishing as his ‘most exciting’ strength, with him being a powerful figure who uses his build to be a difficult obstacle for defenders to overcome.

His pace and ability to finish see him likened once again to Haaland, with Breaking the Lines calling him more of a 'Haaland than a [Gianluca] Scamacca' for how he utilises his 6 foot 4 frame.

The Slovenia international has been likened to the formidable Norweigan countless times in the early stages of his career, but just how does he compare to the treble winner, and what could he offer to Arsenal?

How does Benjamin Sesko compare to Erling Haaland

There are parallels in the two striker’s career journeys so far, with both talents showcasing their ability at RB Salzburg before moving to Germany for further experience.

Identically, Haaland and Sesko both netted 16 Austrian Bundesliga goals in their respective final campaigns at Salzburg, moving on to new challenges as the number one forward for the side at the point of their departure.

benjamin-sesko-manchester-united-harry-kane-transfer-ten-hag

One of the most comparable themes between the two forwards is their ability to make the most out of a chance in a game, which is portrayed through the duo’s lack of touches on average per game last season.

In the 2022/23 Premier League, Haaland averaged only 23.7 touches of the ball per game, yet boasted a conversion rate of 29% and netted a record 36 goals, via Sofascore.

In the Austrian Bundesliga, Sesko averaged 28.2 touches per game, sporting a conversion rate of 20% and netting 16 goals to assert his dominance on the side at the mere age of 19.

For Arsenal, Arteta only needs to look at how Pep Guardiola’s side has flourished thanks to the arrival of Haaland to be inspired by the importance of hiring a strict finisher.

The Gunners came close last term, but weren’t close to City in terms of player-for-player quality, reinforcing what needs to be done for the Spaniard to close in on some overdue major silverware at the Emirates.

If the statistics, performances and comparisons are anything to go by, Arteta could take a huge leap in the right direction by signing Sesko in the near future.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe already happy to sell Man United’s big-money "panic buy"

Since Erik ten Hag took over at Manchester United, the club has splashed the cash, bringing in 16 players in total over the course of the Dutchman's 18 months in the dugout.

The Red Devils have added some massive names to the squad, including £55m signing Mason Mount as well as £82m Antony, but the jury is still out on some, if not all of Ten Hag's most expensive players with supporters so bored they've resorted to distraction techniques inside Old Trafford.

One man in particular could be on his way out of Old Trafford already, having moved to England just last year.

The player Jim Ratcliffe wants to sell

Casemiro signed for Man United at the ripe age of 30 last season for a whopping £70m, having just won La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid in Spain.

The Brazilian has so far made 51 appearances for the English giants, earning plaudits for some of his performances in a red shirt, although Casemiro also missed a whole host of games through suspension, including two straight red card offences.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro.

Nevertheless, this season, the 31-year-old has been hampered by injuries, causing him to feature only 12 times in all competitions under Ten Hag, making merely eight appearances in the Premier League.

It was recently reported that Manchester United's prospective minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe listed Casemiro as an example of misguided recruitment in a meeting with other board members due to his price tag and being on the wrong side of 30.

Nice owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Now, talkSPORT are reporting that Sir Jim is keen to sell the five-time European champion so soon into his career at the Theatre of Dreams, with clubs in Saudi Arabia interested in securing his signature.

But would Man United be making a mistake by selling Casemiro?

Casemiro's stats this season

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher is certainly not a fan of Casemiro, nor United's acquisition of the experienced midfielder, previously labelling him as a "panic buy" from the club. The Liverpool legend also called for Ten Hag to change his midfield following a dismal start to the campaign by his side.

On the face of it, Casemiro has looked quite solid statistically over the past calendar year when compared to others in the same position across Europe's top-five leagues. The Real Madrid legend is sitting inside the top 12% for goals per 90 and the top 5% for expected goals per 90. Furthermore, the Brazilian is in the top 1% for blocks per 90 and passes blocked per 90 while also being in the top 16% for tackles won per 90, according to FBref.

Defensively, Casemiro is sound, apart from his obvious disciplinary issues. However, where United's number '18' struggles the most is in his ability to make the team tick. The former Madrid star is an excellent passer of the ball when he has time and space to find a teammate, particularly from range. The issues lie in his struggles to play with his back to goal and his inability to make quick, incisive short passes to help move the opposition.

Casemiro is in the bottom 23% for pass completion percentage per 90 this calendar year and the bottom 17% for short passes completed per 90. Meanwhile, Manchester City's midfield maestro Rodri is in the top 1% for pass completion percentage per 90 and the top 9% for short passes completed per 90.

The Spaniard is the fulcrum of Man City with his neat and tidy passes to make space, whereas Casemiro tends to prefer big switches of play, evident from his being in the top 9% for progressive passing distance per 90.

United need a player in the mould of Rodri or even Arsenal's Declan Rice. Casemiro's style of play suits a more transition-based team, not one keen to hold possession and build from the back, so if the Red Devils can recuperate adequate funds from the Brazilian's sale, it's best for all parties if they part ways.
