Fluminense supera pressão, goleia o Coritiba e cola no G6 do Brasileiro

Aniversariante faz a festa

Mujeeb's maiden five-for seals Afghanistan's series win

The mystery spinner did the bulk of the damage as Zimbabwe collapsed to 134 all out. It only took Afghanistan 21.1 overs to chase that down without loss, with Mohammad Shahzad and Ihsanullah making unbeaten half-centuries

Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs led Afghanistan to a series-clinching ten-wicket win over Zimbabwe, with one match still left to play. The win confirmed Afghanistan would end the series at No. 10 in the ICC ODI rankings, one place above Zimbabwe. Afghanistan have now won four of the five ODI series between these two sides, the other ending in a 2-2 draw. Mujeeb, aged 16 years and 325 days, also became the youngest to clinch a five-for in ODIs – beating Waqar Younis’ record, who had clinched his first five-for aged 18 years and 164 days.Zimbabwe chose to bat first and were immediately pushed onto the back foot by Mujeeb’s mystery spin. Opening the bowling, as usual, he sent back Solomon Mire and Hamilton Masakadza – both openers bowled – in his first spell, leaving Zimbabwe 15 for 2. Brendan Taylor counterattacked, hitting two sixes in one Mujeeb over and rushing to 30 at over a run a ball before falling to Sharafuddin Ashraf’s left-arm spin. Either side of his dismissal, Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan also struck key blows to reduce the visitors to 74 for 5.Craig Ervine kept fighting at one end, but no one stayed with him long enough as Afghanistan’s spinners kept making regular incisions. Mujeeb returned to the attack in the 28th over to send back Graeme Cremer and Kyle Jarvis off successive balls, the latter bowled through the gate by a perfectly pitched offbreak. Eventually, a last-wicket stand of 31 between Ervine and Blessing Muzarabani – who made a 17-ball duck – took Zimbabwe to 134. Ervine ended up unbeaten on 54 off 73 balls, having struck six fours and a six. All ten Zimbabwean wickets fell to spin. Their innings only lasted 38 overs. This meant there would be a dinner break just under an hour into Afghanistan’s chase. By that point, they had already motored to 75 for no loss in 12 overs, with Mohammad Shahzad leading the charge with a 40-ball half-century and Ihsanullah going to the break on 17 off 31 balls.Post-dinner, the roles were almost reversed. Shahzad added 24 to his score off 33 balls, while Ihsanullah clattered 34 off 22, bringing up his half-century with the winning boundary off Ryan Burl in the 22nd over of the chase.

'Great decision for series and Test cricket'

Having Kagiso Rabada back is “satisfying” for two reasons: he will play at Newlands and South Africa feel vindicated that inconsistent application of the ICC code of conduct has been rectified

Firdose Moonda20-Mar-20183:24

Brettig: Can sense surprise over Rabada decision from Australia

South Africa are “extremely satisfied” with the lowering of the sanction against their premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, for two reasons. The obvious one is that Rabada is now cleared to play and will take his place in the XI at Newlands; the other is that the hosts feel vindicated that what they saw as inconsistent application of the ICC’s code of the conduct has been rectified.”The decision itself is great for the series and for Test cricket,” Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager, said. “The team is extremely satisfied with the decision. We believe KG never deliberately charged Steven Smith with his shoulder.”Moosajee was among those who attended the six-hour hearing on Monday and though he could not go into the specifics of the arguments made by Rabada’s advocate Dali Mpofu, Moosajee indicated South Africa could have opened a door to discussions around the code. “There were key learnings for everybody. It will stimulate healthy debate,” Moosajee said. “We may have to look at things around processes, independent judicial commissions, words in the code of conduct manual.”South Africa have taken this stance before, when Faf du Plessis appealed against a ball-tampering verdict in late 2016. Then, South Africa asked for clarity over what constituted an artificial substance as it relates to shining the ball. Du Plessis was unsuccessful and continues to have three demerit points attached to his record. Earlier in this series. Quinton de Kock contested the sanction of a Level 1 charge for conduct that went against the spirit of the game during his stairwell saga with David Warner. On that occasion, South Africa were seeking to have the “line” explicitly defined in terms of what kinds of comments are considered personal. De Kock was also unsuccessful. Now, Rabada and South Africa have succeeded, and there is an undertone they will continue to call for consistency in the application of the code. “We have raised issues in the past around, not the code of conduct per se, but the inconsistent application of the code of conduct,” Moosajee said. “In this case, it wasn’t particularly raised but it has been raised prior to this case.”At the same time, South Africa also want Rabada to understand the limits within which he must celebrate. While continuing to encourage Rabada to remain aggressive, South Africa have asked him to be more mindful. “We do understand KG is quite a fiery character on the field but there are rules and regulations that govern conduct on the field,” Moosajee said. “Like every other player, this applies to KG as well and he is well aware of it. He is the first to admit he must take better responsibility and better handle his positive and aggressive celebration and not to get careless, nor be disrespectful.”Chief on Rabada’s checklist when he takes his next wicket will be to ensure he gets out of the batsmen’s space to avoid making any contact. “He is not a badly behaved kid, he’s just very excited and exuberant sometimes,” Ottis Gibson, South Africa’s coach, said. “When you’re playing against the best team in the world, sometimes that comes out of you. In all the stuff that he did, there was no aggressive intent other than celebrating a wicket. But we’ve made him aware of the batsman’s space and where his space needs to be. He must get away from the batsman and continue to celebrate.”AFP

Gibson hopes Rabada will not be drawn into any more controversy, especially as he is only one demerit point away from a ban and Australia previously made public their intention to prey on him. “They might do (provoke Rabada) but he is a smart kid and I’m sure he learnt his lesson from what happened last week and I don’t expect that he will make the same mistake again,” Gibson said. For their part, Australia have only expressed an eagerness to face Rabada again. “As Australian cricketers we always want to play against the best players in the world and KG is the No.1 bowler in the world,” Nathan Lyon said. “It’s going to be another great challenge for all of us. The ICC has made their decision and we respect them, that’s their job. We got no dramas with it.”And so, with the drama over for now, all Rabada needs to focus on is his performance. He trained with the team on Monday, after the marathon hearing, and again on Tuesday. Gibson provided assurance that the events of the last week have not taken a toll on Rabada’s mind. “He’s a very strong character. He came (to training) after six hours in a courtroom, as you call it, yesterday and all he wanted to do was practice. That’s what the guy loves doing,” Gibson said. “He has been made very much aware of his responsibility going forward, not just to himself but to the team as well.”Rabada’s availability has also boosted team morale, with Gibson saying it has “lifted everybody” and simplified team selection. South Africa added fast bowlers Duanne Olivier and Chris Morris to the squad as cover for Rabada but neither are likely to be needed for the next match, and may be released as early as Wednesday to play in the final round of first-class matches. All that remains is for South Africa to decide whether there is room in the XI for Morne Morkel, who is playing in his last series and is three wickets away from 300, though he may be a better fit for the fourth Test at the Wanderers. Asked if he has some sympathy for Morkel being sidelined, Gibson maintained South Africa will not select on emotion. “Morne is also in line for selection for this week,” Gibson said. “I am sure whichever way we go… he has got two more opportunities. Sympathy I am not sure, because it’s international sport and we are trying to win a series and we will try and pick the best team to do that. He is still very much part of our plans for the next two Tests.”The other consideration is whether to play the fit-again Temba Bavuma or give Theunis de Bruyn another chance. South Africa may also choose to bench a batsmen in favour of a four-pronged pace attack. All just cricketing issues, which Gibson hopes will take centre-stage for the rest of the series.

West Ham: Irons have been rinsed of £21m by disappointing flop

Make no mistake, West Ham United have revelled in one of the most resounding rises of any club across Europe over the past several years, now a consistent presence on the European stage after spending years languishing below expectations.

Headed by Scotsman David Moyes, who has transformed the Premier League club across his second stint, the Hammers are currently preparing for their second Europa League campaign in three years – having won the Europa Conference League last season to return to the continental tournament.

This season, West Ham have started with conviction despite selling star midfielder Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m in July, having won three of drawn one of their opening four matches.

So much has hit the mark on the transfer front over the past several years to create this success, but one player who has not found his feet is Maxwel Cornet, who has cost a considerable amount for such little impact thus far.

How much did West Ham sign Maxwel Cornet for?

Last summer, West Ham signed Cornet for £17.5m from Burnley, with the Ivorian having impressed in Lancashire despite Burnley's relegation from the Premier League.

Described as a "fabulous goalscorer and probably one of the signings of the season" by pundit Owen Hargreaves while plying his trade in Claret Road colours, Cornet scored nine goals and supplied one assist across just 21 starting appearances for his imperilled outfit.

His impact was eye-catching to say the least, providing Sean Dyche's Burnley with a goal threat unseen from the wide flanks, a dynamism tailor-made for English football.

It came at a time where West Ham had been making increments to their side for a few years, and signed him to provide competition for the likes of Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen on the flanks.

While injuries have played detriment to his ambitions on the grass, Cornet "hasn't shown" Moyes enough in east London, according to journalist Paul Brown, and will need a drastic upswing in performance if he is to earn a starring role this season

How much has Maxwel Cornet cost West Ham in total?

Cornet is believed to earn £65k-per-week under Moyes' management, which means that he has cost the Premier League team around £21m thus far, and counting.

When considering the fact that he is yet to bag his first goal despite playing 22 matches, Cornet does appear to have lost that 'fabulous' finishing that he carried at Burnley.

West Ham United forward Maxwel Cornet.

This term, Cornet played one minute against Bournemouth in the opener but has been shackled to the bench for the past three outings, yet to add to his maiden seasonal appearance.

After such an emphatic introduction to life in England under Dyche's wing at Burnley, the West Ham faithful would be forgiven for thinking that a consistent and considerable goalscorer had been added to the ranks, but it has not been the case.

There will still be optimism that Cornet can rekindle his former form at the London Stadium, but having been left on the fringe in the opening phase of the 2023/24 campaign, it might take some doing to wedge his way back into prominence under Moyes' wing. Indeed, so far this is looking like money down the drain as far as the Hammers are concerned.

Smith, Boucher take aim at Lehmann and Australian crowds

Former South Africa cricketers weigh in after Australia coach labels Newlands crowd behaviour “disgraceful”

Firdose Moonda in Cape Town24-Mar-20181:59

Noise, grumbling and chatter: Everything that’s taking the sheen off a great series

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith and veteran wicketkeeper Mark Boucher, have hit out at Australia coach Darren Lehmann and his team for calling the Newlands crowd “disgraceful” following the second day’s play of the third Test in Cape Town.At the end of the second day, during which Australia opener David Warner was confronted by a fan as he returned to the changeroom, and 12 other spectators were ejected from the ground for singing distasteful songs about Warner’s wife Candice, Lehmann said the fans had “gone too far,” and had made personal remarks about the Australian players’ partners and wives. Cricket Australia lodged an official complaint with Cricket South Africa, who beefed up security in response.Zero tolerance to anti-social behaviour by fans – Sutherland

James Sutherland, the CA chief executive, said the chairman David Peever had confronted his opposite number Chris Nenzani over crowd behaviour at Newlands.
“We are extremely disappointed that a small number of fans have directed such offensive and inappropriate behaviour towards our players and members of their families,” Sutherland said. “Our Chairman David Peever, who is in Cape Town, has taken the matter up directly with relevant CSA officials, including President Chris Nenzani.
“We acknowledge that CSA is taking steps to ensure incidents like those yesterday are not repeated and we have encouraged the strongest possible action in response to such behaviour. People who behave in such a manner should not be welcome at cricket grounds anywhere in the world, and together with the ICC and all member countries, we strongly endorse a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behaviour by fans.”

The only reaction from the South African camp so far was fast bowler Morne Morkel urging fans not to “get out line,” but Smith and Boucher have taken on Lehmann, effectively saying Australian crowds were the same, if not worse.”Correct Darren! Fully agree! But… start cleaning up in your own country first! The personal, racial abuse I’ve witnessed in Aus was ridiculous. U guys don’t live in a glass house! Why the fuss all of a sudden? Seems fine when the shoe is on the other foot,” Boucher tweeted in response to a clip of Lehmann posted by cricket.com.au, an account run by Cricket Australia.Smith responded to Boucher, pointing to the Australia team as a whole. He tweeted: “Absolutely right, and I don’t condone any of it… But blimey I have never seen an Aussie team whinge and whine like this!”Former South Africa spinner Paul Harris also added his voice, tweeting, “I cannot repeat what I was called numerous times in Aus. The personal and racial abuse was really out there. Shouldn’t throw stones in a glass house I say.”South African players have been subjected to abuse from Australian crowds on several occasions in the past with Andre Nel, Makhaya Ntini, Ashwell Prince, Garnett Kruger and Shaun Pollock all complaining of racial abuse in 2005-06. On South Africa’s most recent tour to Australia in November 2016, a spectator called Hashim Amla a terrorist in graffiti written on a fence at Bellerive Oval. The fan was banned from all Australian grounds for three years. In contrast, none of the fans involved in any incidents during the ongoing Cape Town Test, including the man who confronted Warner, have been banned, and though they were removed from the ground at the time of their indiscretion, they will be allowed back in.Some of the criticism of Lehmann stems from his own history in egging on crowds to act as a 12th man. In 2013, Lehmann said said his players had called Stuart Broad “everything under the sun,” and hoped “the Australian public give it to him right from the word go for the whole summer and he cries and goes home,” after Broad did not walk when nicking off during the first Ashes Test that summer. Lehmann also called Broad a cheat and was fined 20% of his match fee.Earlier in this series, Quinton de Kock was disciplined – 25% of his match fee and one demerit point – for saying something inappropriate, when he made a comment to Warner about his wife during the Durban Test. De Kock was responding to hours of being sledged by Warner on-field and his jibe prompted an aggressive response from Warner, who had to be physically restrained by his team-mates on the stairwell leading to the players’ changeroom. Warner was charged with and found guilty of a Level 2 offence; he earned three demerit points and was fined 75% fee for his actions. At the time, both captains said the sledging had got personal, though they disagreed about what constituted a personal sledge. For South Africa, comments about physical appearance and weight – which Warner made to de Kock – fall into the category, while Australia regard anything to do with family as personal. Some sections of the South African fan-base have latched onto the idea of shaming the opposition’s other halves and wore masks bearing the face of Sonny-Bill Williams, the rugby player with whom Candice Warner had a liaison several years before marrying Warner, during the St George’s Park Test. Two CSA officials posed with the fans and have since been suspended. The masks have not made an appearance at Newlands, but a Sonny-Bill banner was confiscated on day one and people singing songs about Williams were removed from the stadium on day two.

Everton: Toffees in contact to sign £79k-p/w "absolute talent"

Everton are being kept updated on the situation of an exciting striker overseas as they weigh up whether to bring him to the Premier League in January, according to reports.

What's the latest transfer news at Everton?

Over the summer, Sean Dyche was known to be searching the market for a new centre-forward and was heavily linked with a swoop for Southampton’s Che Adams, but having seen two offers rejected due to his side constantly increasing their asking price, a deal failed to come to fruition before the deadline.

The Toffees therefore turned their attention towards other targets to provide cover and competition for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and eventually secured the services of Beto from Udinese having missed out on him back in January, and whilst the boss now has what he was looking for, that hasn’t stopped him from wanting to add another.

At the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain’s Hugo Ekitike permanently joined the club this summer following a successful loan last season, but after making zero starts and just one substitute appearance so far this term in Ligue 1, via WhoScored, he’s fallen significantly down the pecking order.

The Goodison Park side reportedly tabled a loan to buy bid for the 21-year-old last month but this was rejected due to the total package being nowhere near his asking price, though if the following update is to be believed, they are planning to take a second bite of the cherry in January.

Are Everton signing Hugo Ekitike?

According to 90min, Everton, Brentford, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace are all “in contact” with the representatives of Ekitike and are “being kept informed of the situation”.

The PSG attacker’s future is set to be decided “in the coming months”, and whilst he’s determined to fight for his place under Luis Enrique, he knows that he needs to start showing more. Should the striker not be able to increase his impact by December, he is “ready to look at other options”, with his camp fully aware of the potential suitors above who are interested.

England currently looks like the most likely destination should he move onto new pastures, but there is also Lyon, Lens and his former club Reims looking to take him on loan in Ligue 1.

Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike.

How many goals has Hugo Ekitike scored?

Since the start of his career, Ekitike has racked up 35 contributions (24 goals and 11 assists) in 87 outings which has seen him dubbed an “absolute talent” by journalist Antonio Mango, so it comes as no surprise that Dyche wants to try once again to bring him to Everton.

The Frenchman, who pockets £79k-per-week, also has extremely strong link-up play with his fellow attacking teammates in and around the final third where he ranks in the 96th percentile for pass completion, so is a natural finisher but can also hold up the ball and link play together at the top end of the pitch.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Ekitike even has the ability to operate out wide on the left-wing alongside his usual role leading the line, so his versatility would allow the manager to have him and Beto or Calvert-Lewin on the pitch at the same time should he want to add extra firepower to his frontline on Merseyside.
