Wyatt, Britt ensure Renegades' derby win

Melbourne Renegades, languishing at the bottom of the WBBL table, upset the finals aspirations of their crosstown rivals Melbourne Stars, for the second-successive Saturday in the WBBL.Renegades victory – their third on the spin – was built on a tight bowling performance, led by Lea Tahuhu and Molly Strano, and finished with a calm chase, in which Danielle Wyatt made 40 and Kris Britt 35 as they shared 75 for the third wicket before both fell with victory in sight.Stars’ missed opportunity
The Stars were left to rue their middling total of 127 for seven. All of their top four got in, looked settled and ready to go big, but failed to kick on.Meg Lanning may have inside-edged Tahuhu past her stumps for four off the match’s first ball, but she and Emma Inglis were just beginning to get going when they fell in consecutive balls at the end of the powerplay. The excellent Strano bowled Inglis, then Tahuhu – bowling her fourth over in the seventh of the innings – found a pearler to dismiss Lanning. It pitched on off, then nipped away, beating Lanning’s outside edge and taking the off peg. Stars were 35 for two.Still, Natalie Sciver joined Jess Cameron and together they shared 56, with Sciver raiding Nicole Goodwin’s only over for 18, including a brilliantly violent slog-swept six off a no-ball. Once again, a strong position – 90 for two with six overs to go – was surrendered by one bad over. The 15th, the second of a fine spell from Wyatt, brought about their downfall. Cameron picked out long-off, then Sciver was sent back by Katie Mack – who should have deferred to the set batsman – and run out by a mile. Mack and Hayley Jensen shared 32 runs before three wickets fell in three balls in the final over, but the opportunity to accelerate had been missed.Bowlin’ dry
Goodwin’s costly over aside, this was a fine bowling and fielding performance from Renegades. Wyatt and Maitlan Brown bowled four tight overs each, but the key contributions came from those who broke the opening partnership, Tahuhu and Strano. It’s rare to see a player bowl their four overs up top, but it was obvious why Rachel Priest kept Tahuhu on: the New Zealand international was bowling sharp bouncers with real pace (about 120kph) and unsettling Lanning. Strano, on the other hand, bowled three tight overs before returning at the death. Jensen stepped across her stumps to try to exploit a gap at fine-leg but was bowled, then Emma Kearney and Kristen Beams were run out, the latter by a brilliant throw from Tahuhu. The chilled chase – almost
Priest and Sophie Molineux – who has improved through the tournament’s progress – got the Renegades off to a calm start before falling in quick succession. It will be tough to find a prettier 23 than Molineux’s here – full, as it was, with deft cuts and powerful pulls – but she was caught at mid-on and Priest followed next over. Never mind, the impish Wyatt and more powerful Britt picked up the baton, growing into their 11-over partnership to leave Renegades’ victory beyond doubt.Triscari’s tricks of the trade
Renegades’ best bowling came courtesy of Gemma Triscari’s left-arm trickery, but the strength of Wyatt and Britt’s partnership was their ability to pick their targets. Wyatt licked her lips at the introduction of Alana King’s legspin, and walloped her down the ground for consecutive fours. Triscari’s penultimate delivery – her last over was the 17th – gave her the deserved wicket of Wyatt, hitting to mid-on, while Britt carelessly ran herself out and, with three required, Grace Harris slapped to cover. Strano, who looks every inch a future Southern Star, calmly saw Renegades home.Renegades, having played ten (the joint-most in the competition) of their 14 games, now sit just half a point back from four teams – including the Stars, who are fourth, but have lost four in a row

BCCI unhappy with $290m under new model

Under the new financial model proposed by the ICC, the BCCI will earn US$ 290 million from ICC revenues in the 2015-2023 rights cycle

Nagraj Gollapudi04-Feb-20173:01

Samiuddin: Expect BCCI to influence changes in new model

Under the new financial model proposed by the ICC, the BCCI will earn $290 million from ICC revenues in the 2015-2023 rights cycle. That figure, according to a BCCI member familiar with the numbers, is the net amount of earning and amounts to a 34% cut from what would have been their net earning under the Big-Three model – the net earning in that model was $450 million (the more widely circulated figure of $571.25 was the gross earning). In principle, the ICC Board voted in favour of passing a new constitution in a meeting in Dubai on Saturday. But the BCCI voted against it, after initially asking for the vote to be deferred to April, and the reduced revenue was its biggest bone of contention – the BCCI believes it should be earning in the region of $400 million in any financial model.According to the ICC’s old revenue distribution formula used between 2007 and 2015 – before the Big Three – the Full Members stood to gain an equal share of a surplus revenue of $525 million: each member received approximately $52.5 million. Under the new proposal, the BCCI stood to make $290 million as the highest earning Full Member – a 452% increase from the earlier TV rights cycle. According to an official privy to the discussions, Manohar’s point of contention was about why the BCCI wanted more when it was already getting more than it did under the old distribution. The BCCI’s preferred figure was $450 million under the Big Three’s financial model, an 757% increase as opposed to the 452% increase currently calcuated. So far the Big Three financial model had been in operation for the early stages of the 2015-2023 cycle, and only one ICC event of financial benefit to the Full Members had taken place so far – the 2016 World T20. The contribution cost payment due from that event was held back because of the uncertainty over the model. It is not yet clear whether the BCCI’s share of $290 million is just the revenue from the contribution cost metric the Big-Three model introduced – that is, a percentage earning of the ICC’s total revenues based on that board’s contribution to the game – or a total figure that includes also a distribution amount that is divided equally among the ten Full Members. In the Big-Three model, based on ICC revenues of $2.5 billion, the distribution amount would have meant an extra $63.75 million on top of the contribution cost.A BCCI member said there was no need for the ICC members to vote on the new constitution and financial model in a ‘tearing hurry’•PTI

In either case, the BCCI is unhappy because it is earning less money in this model while, according to the member, every other board stands to earn more than projected in the Big-Three model. What has also irked the BCCI is that the ICC decided to push ahead with the new constitution and governance structure and, by going to vote, presented it to the Indian board effectively as a fait accompli. The irony will not be lost on some that the BCCI is unhappy at the lack of transparency in the calculations behind this new financial model. The ICC said the model was built on guiding principles of equity, good conscience, revenue generated by members, and a recognition of an interdependency among members. The BCCI claims that in the working group’s report – from which this model comes – the ICC said its calculations were not backed by a scientific model. One of the major points of opposition to the Big Three’s calculations was that its authors never revealed the formula by which they had arrived at their figures, instead measuring in generic terms the financial and historic contribution of boards to the game.At today’s meeting Vikram Limaye, the BCCI’s representative at the ICC Board, argued that two wrongs don’t make a right. “You are deciding the fortunes of world cricket on good faith?” the BCCI member said.In a statement issued minutes after the ICC’s press release on the meetings, the BCCI said it had wanted to defer the vote. But ICC chairman Shashank Manohar, the driving force behind these proposals, was eager to have the draft of a constitution approved in principle, while leaving room for members to discuss and debate smaller changes by April. The BCCI was not impressed. “What was the tearing hurry?” the BCCI member said. “We could have easily moved the vote to next round [of meetings]. Given the Committee of Administrators [temporarily overseeing the BCCI] has just come in four days back. Give it time to find its feet, to understand the nuances. In the interim engage with us actively before the vote.”The BCCI is, however, unperturbed by the 7-2 vote (Zimbabwe abstained; Sri Lanka joined the BCCI in the opposition) that favoured the new constitution. It had entered the board meeting expecting to be the lone opponent against nine Full Members. “So a 7-2 vote with one abstention is actually good,” the BCCI member pointed out. “And we will get the numbers on our side by the time final vote takes place.”He said the ICC needs a three-fourth majority to pass any resolution, and numbers will favour BCCI. “They need an 8-2 majority. And the vote cannot go forward if four members oppose the resolution. We will get them.”In the past the BCCI has managed to maintain its grip over the ICC by having the Asian bloc on its side. Thilanga Sumathipala, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) president, objected to some of the proposals in the new governance structure and hence voted against the new model. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), which has often sided with the BCCI, was in a spot given that its president Nazmul Hassan was part of the ICC working group that produced the report. During an Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting, approaches are believed to have been made by the BCCI to the PCB but they were rebuffed; the PCB is unhappy with the BCCI for failing to honour an MoU for bilateral cricket as a reward for supporting the Big Three in 2014.But the BCCI remains confident it will be able to make its “huge clout” count by luring smaller members with more bilateral cricket outside the proposed Test league. Under the proposed nine-team Test structure, each country is supposed to play the other once in two years. “One extra match against a Bangladesh or West Indies is a huge one for them in monetary terms. India just has to play them once in four years and they stand to earn a lot,” the BCCI member said.

West Brom Can Land Livermore Upgrade In £30k-p/w Swoop

West Bromwich Albion narrowly missed out on a place in the Championship play-offs last season as they finished three points off the top six.

Carlos Corberan, who arrived at the end of October 2022, was unable to drag his side into the promotion mix and the Spaniard may be hoping for better luck next term.

The former Huddersfield Town coach has just over two months left of the summer transfer window to build a squad that will be capable of fighting at the top end of the table over the next 12 months.

One player who has been linked with a move to The Hawthorns is a defensive midfielder from the Premier League. Journalist Darren Witcoop recently tweeted:

"West Brom keeping an eye on the future of Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba. The Zimbabwe midfielder was wanted by West Brom in January before joining Luton. Luton interested in re-signing Nakamba but Albion also have him on their summer list."

Would Marvelous Nakamba be a good signing for West Brom?

The Zimbabwe international would be a terrific addition to the squad as his performances on loan with the Hatters last season showcased his ability to be an excellent player in the Championship.

Nakamba's displays for Luton suggest that the quality is there for him to be a big upgrade on one of Corberan's midfielders from the 2022/23 campaign – Jake Livermore.

Luton loanee Marvelous Nakamba.

The Baggies veteran, who is set to officially leave the club on Saturday upon the expiry of his contract, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.7 across 17 league matches last term.

He scored one goal and created 0.2 chances per game for his teammates to go along with 1.6 tackles and interceptions per Championship outing – 0.8 of each. The 33-year-old dud did not rank in the top five performers for the club in either of the aforementioned defensive statistics, whilst his Sofascore rating placed him 19th among the squad.

Nakamba, who was described as a "Duracell battery" by Luton boss Rob Edwards, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.84 across 17 league games, which would have placed him in the top ten performers for the Baggies.

The 29-year-old battler also completed an eye-catching 3.8 tackles per game for the Hatters. This is 1.8 more than any other West Brom player managed, with Okay Yokuslu's club-leading two tackles per match looking relatively unimpressive in comparison to the Villa midfielder's contributions last term.

These statistics suggest that Nakamba would produce a higher standard of performance than Livermore every week, while also being able to win the ball back for his side far more frequently compared to the English enforcer and the rest of Corberan's squad.

This is why the Baggies head coach must work hard to secure a deal for the £30k-per-week stopper if Luton are unable to strike an agreement for his services.

Rangers Set To Lose Out On Transfer For 20-Year-Old Winger

Rangers may not be bringing in Benie Traore this transfer window, with journalist Jonny McFarlane, via Ibrox News, reporting that a deal for the player could be expensive and that he isn't high up on their priority list as a result.

Who is Benie Traore?

The 20-year-old winger currently plies his trade in Sweden for Hacken and has made quite the impression already for the side despite his age. In the 2022/23 season, he bagged a total of 12 goals with two assists along the way.

That record is made even more superb when you consider that the youngster played in only 13 league outings for his side – meaning he averaged 1.10 goals or assists per 90 minutes played.

Whilst he is yet to be called up to his senior national team, his performances have led to him getting his debut for their Under-23 side. He represents the Ivory Coast when it comes to international football and they finally allowed him to star for them in March of this year – showing that his hard work on the field for Hacken is now paying off. It wouldn't be a surprise to soon see him line up for their first-team.

Are Rangers signing Benie Traore?

It's these showings that have since led to interest in his services from Rangers. However, a fresh report from journalist Jonny McFarlane, via Ibrox News, will not be news that Gers fans want to hear.

He states that the Scottish Premiership side do not have a deal for Traore as high up on their priority list as he could be "very expensive" if they were to push forward with a bid for the player – Alan Nixon reports there has already been one effort turned down, though it's not clear which side of Glasgow it came from.

McFarlane finished by saying that fans shouldn't "expect to see Benie Traore at Ibrox any time soon". Celtic could now be in the clear to sign him, with the Hoops also believed to be keeping tabs on the forward.

He said: "Yes there is interest [from Celtic as well] but Rangers see that as one that’ll be very far down the list. He will also be very expensive, based on what I’ve been told by people at the club."

It would be a shame for Rangers to not bring in a player such as Traore, who has already shone to those who have watched him. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig called him Hacken's "jewel" and added that he is another "highly-talented" player that the club have created.

It suggests that there is plenty of talent in his boots – but he may not get the opportunity to show it or to continue to try and fulfil his potential in Scotland with the Gers.

Malinga set for return against new-look Australia

ESPNcricinfo previews the first T20I between Australia and Sri Lanka at the MCG

The Preview by Brydon Coverdale16-Feb-2017Match factsFebruary 17, 2017
Start time 1940 local (0840 GMT)Aaron Finch needs 26 runs to reach 1000 in T20Is•Getty Images

Big PictureOn Friday, February 17, two different teams will represent Australia in two different matches on two different continents. The country’s best cricketers – Steven Smith, David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood et al – will begin a three-day tour game in Mumbai ahead of the first Test against India. But the match considered a full international is the one that will take place in Melbourne, where Aaron Finch will lead Australia’s Twenty20 outfit in the first of three games against Sri Lanka. It is a remarkable scenario, but one that will at least give a few new faces – Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner and Michael Klinger, for example – an opportunity to represent their country. Still, the absence of such key players makes it hard not to view this as nearer to an Australia A outfit than the true national side.Sri Lanka enter the series with closer to a full-strength squad, although like Australia they are without their regular T20 captain – Angelo Mathews is unavailable due to a hamstring injury, and Upul Tharanga will stand in as skipper. But it is a squad with plenty of changes from their most recent T20 group, with allrounders Dasun Shanaka and Milinda Siriwardana, as well as batsmen Dilshan Munaweera and Chamara Kapugedara included, having been left out of the touring party that won in South Africa last month. But the most notable inclusion is that of Lasith Malinga, who has played virtually no cricket for nearly a year due to injuries. It didn’t take him long to have an impact on his return against the Prime Minister’s XI on Wednesday: he struck in the first over of the game.Form guideAustralia: WWLWW (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka: WWLLL
In the spotlightThis international call-up has been a long time coming for Michael Klinger. A long, long time coming. He made his first-class debut in 1999. He has piled up 22,163 runs across first-class, List A and T20 cricket – the most for any player prior to an international debut in the past decade (at least). He has been around three Australian states, two English counties, and gone grey in the process. At 36, he will be the fifth oldest T20 international debutant for any full member nation, behind Rafatullah Mohmand (Pakistan), Rahul Dravid (India), Floyd Reifer (West Indies) and Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka). Expect this to be an emotional evening for Klinger and his family.Lasith Malinga’s return will be watched with great interest, for prior to Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s XI game in Canberra, he had not played a high-level match since February last year due to injuries. But Malinga is one of the most accomplished bowlers in Twenty20 history – only Dwayne Bravo has more wickets in the format than the 300 Malinga has taken for nearly a dozen teams. Expect Australia’s batsmen to view Malinga as a man to be respected and seen off rather than attacked – even if he is a little rusty.Lasith Malinga is set to play his first international match since February 2016•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

Team newsAustralia have plenty of options to open the batting – Finch, Klinger, Ben Dunk and Tim Paine all did so during the BBL. The selectors also need to decide on the make-up of the attack, with Pat Cummins and James Faulkner potentially the only two certain starters in the bowling group.Australia (possible) 1 Aaron Finch (capt), 2 Michael Klinger, 3 Ben Dunk, 4 Travis Head, 5 Moises Henriques, 6 Tim Paine (wk), 7 Ashton Turner, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Pat Cummins, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Andrew Tye.Sri Lanka might have given a pointer to their likely XI with the side they picked for Wednesday’s tour game, although there is a chance they might bring Nuwan Kulasekara in to strengthen the bowling.Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 2 Upul Tharanga (capt), 3 Dilshan Munaweera, 4 Asela Gunaratne, 5 Milinda Siriwardana, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Seekkugge Prasanna, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Isuru Udana, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Vikum Sanjaya.Pitch and conditionsThe MCG’s drop-in pitches can sometimes hold up a little, and in this year’s BBL scores around the 150 mark were the norm. The forecast for Friday in Melbourne allows for a slight chance of a shower in the evening, though it should not be heavy.Stats and trivia Tharanga will be the third man to captain Sri Lanka’s T20 side in 2017, after Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal Finch is two games away from becoming the man with the most international appearances for Australia without any of them being Tests – David Hussey (108 games) is the record holder Finch needs 26 runs to reach 1000 in T20 internationals; if he does so at any stage during this series, he will be the second-fastest to the milestone behind Virat KohliQuotes”If you look at their squad, everyone has recently played the Big Bash and have performed really well. I feel like they still have a really good team.”

'A draw is very possible' – Shakib

Shakil Al Hasan said Bangladesh could realistically target a draw since they had 10 wickets in hand going into the final day’s play in Galle

Mohammad Isam in Galle10-Mar-2017

Shakib Al Hasan: ‘Every batsman coming to the wicket has to try and bat long’•Associated Press

Shakib Al Hasan has said that a draw is the most realistic target for Bangladesh as they look to bat out the fifth day in Galle. He also said Bangladesh’s approach shouldn’t just be about defending balls, but also scoring runs to stay confident.Bangladesh have failed to survive the last day on two occasions since January already. In Wellington and Hyderabad, they made critical mistakes which enabled the opposition, New Zealand and India respectively, to dictate terms and win both Tests. They could also look at the previous Bangladesh-Sri Lanka Test for inspiration and direction. In that match, Bangladesh batted out 76.4 overs on the final day in Chittagong, thanks to four important partnerships including an unbroken 120-run stand between Shakib and Mominul Haque that sealed the draw.Shakib said that the batsmen should look at how Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal mixed caution with aggression in the 15 overs they batted on the fourth day in Galle, before bad light (and subsequent rain) ended play.”[The most realistic target is a] draw, since we still have 10 wickets,” Shakib said. “I think we need two or three partnerships, then a draw is possible. As I said, the first session is very important. The whole day will depend on how we play the first session.”Every batsman coming to the wicket has to try and bat long, and also score runs because that increases a batsman’s confidence and he becomes more comfortable. You cannot just defend or just attack. Everything has to be balanced, like the way Soumya batted today. He did not play any loose shots, but at the same time he had a good strike rate.”How Soumya Sarkar and Tamim Iqbal start the final day hold the key for Bangladesh•AFP

Shakib said that if the opening pair should continue in the same vein on the fifth morning, and stretch their unbroken 67-run partnership, then Bangladesh could look for a draw. Stressing on the importance of the first session on the final day, he said that playing each ball on merit will be the “normal” way to bat on a fifth-day pitch, but added that it would be hard work for every batsman that comes out to bat.”Tamim also batted very well. Maybe he did not get that many bad deliveries so he took a bit of time to score runs,” he said. “So we have a lot to learn from their [Tamim and Sarkar] batting. Hopefully they can repeat it tomorrow and those of us batting later can also repeat it, we can hope for a good result. The way the two are playing I don’t think they need to change. They will play according to the merit of the ball that is normal, they will try to follow the game plan we have. The whole team wants them [the opening pair] to bat as long as possible, then it becomes easier for the rest of the batsmen. Everyone will have to work very hard in this situation.”He said that they were also aware of the way the Galle pitch might behave on the final day, having seen the turn that was being generated from the scruffed up surface in the final session of the fourth day.”The fifth-day pitch may behave differently. The ball has started to turn a bit now so it may do more tomorrow. But I think our batsmen are capable and since we still have 10 wickets, we genuinely believe that if not a result, a draw is very possible.”
