Shadman Islam: 'We wanted to win the Test for Mahmudullah'

Shadman’s maiden Test century in Bangladesh’s second innings helped them get into a winning position against Zimbabwe in Harare

Mohammad Isam13-Jul-2021According to Bangladesh batter Shadman Islam, the team was so moved by Mahmudullah’s retirement announcement during the Harare Test against Zimbabwe, that the players felt motivated to win the match and dedicate it to the 35-year old. The young opener who made his maiden century in the second innings, said that they were all taken aback by Mahmudullah’s decision.”When we heard from (Mahmudullah) Riyad bhai that this was to be his last Test, we got very motivated to do well in the Test. We were all upset. He has done a lot for this team. We wanted to win the match for him. We all decided to dedicate the win for Riyad , and thankfully that’s what happened,” said Shadman, shortly after arriving in Dhaka with the rest of the Test specialists.Shadman’s response on Mahmudullah’s retirement has, so far, been the most direct from any Bangladesh player. Other Bangladesh players have been glowing in their tribute of Mahmudullah in social media posts after the match. But they have not directly mentioned his retirement, conceivably not to draw the ire of BCB president Nazmul Hassan who criticised Mahmudullah for announcing it midway through a match.Captain Mominul Haque mumbled a reply when the traveling media asked him repeatedly about the retirement in the post-match post conference in Harare. But he did credit Mahmudullah for his unbeaten 150 that put Bangladesh on top after a difficult start to their batting innings.Shadman and Najmul Hossain Shanto took full advantage of the 192-run lead, reaching centuries during their 196-run second wicket stand in the second innings. Shanto made 117 while Shadman reached his first ton.”What makes me happy is that my century helped the team to a Test win. We always believed that we were the better team, even in their conditions. Riyad , Taskin and Mominul made things easier for us with their batting.”The wicket was slightly different in the second innings, so we believed that we could give Zimbabwe a tough total in the fourth innings,” he said.Shadman is one of eight cricketers who returned home after the one-off Test. Captain Haque, Shanto, Saif Hassan, Yasir Ali, Nayeem Hasan, Abu Jayed and Ebadot Hossain were the others. They will most likely sit out for the next three months when Bangladesh play plenty of white-ball cricket. The BCB hasn’t announced any red-ball competition.”One has to come to terms with how things are at the moment. The pandemic is not in anyone’s control,” Shadman said. “There’s no point getting disappointed [with lack of matches]. I will just keep training, and try to play well.”

'The players proved me wrong!' – Arne Slot didn't believe Liverpool would score at Brentford despite record-breaking haul of 37 shots in last-gasp win

The Reds recorded 37 shots during Saturday's victory at the Gtech Community Stadium – a record for the away side in a Premier League match since Opta started tracking such data in 2003-04. However, they had to wait until stoppage time at the end of the second half to breach the hosts' defence, with Darwin Nunez coming off the bench to grab a memorable brace.

Liverpool returned to winning ways in the Premier League following back-to-back draws with Manchester United and Nottingham Forest – games in which the Reds failed to make the most of the many chances they created. In his post-match press conference, Slot claimed he didn't have faith in his team to snatch the three points having watched his men squander such opportunities in the recent past.

WHAT SLOT SAID

Slot told reporters: "If a goal was coming, I had any doubts? Yes, of course I had doubts about that. Before we scored the two goals, it felt as if I was looking at the same game again and again and again. The same pattern arose. I said it already a few times, against United, everybody was focused on the [Harry] Maguire chance, but seven minutes before we had three open chances. So many times in recent weeks, against Tottenham as well, we missed a lot of chances. Against Forest, we missed a lot. It would have been a bit surprising if I felt 'OK, after all these chances missed today, we will probably score in the last five minutes'! But the boys, the players proved me wrong…again."

Liverpool are back to action on Tuesday when they welcome Lille to Anfield in the Champions League, before hosting Ipswich next Saturday as they resume their quest for the Premier League title.

Guardiola raved over £35m West Ham ace, now he’s as bad as Rodriguez

Declan Rice will go down as one of the best midfielders in West Ham United history, coming through the club’s academy before making a huge impact on the first team.

The England international ended up making 245 appearances for the Hammers over a seven-year period – playing an integral role in the club’s Europa Conference League back in the 2022/23 campaign.

However, he would depart the London Stadium the summer after the triumph, joining Arsenal in a £105m deal which to this day stands as a record for an English player.

Declan Rice for West Ham

Whilst it was a huge fee to receive for an academy graduate, his departure left a sizeable hole in the middle of the Irons midfield – with former boss David Moyes unable to plug the gap left by the 25-year-old.

New boss Julian Lopetegui was given the opportunity to address the issue this summer, signing one player who is yet to make a positive impression after his move during the transfer window.

Guido Rodriguez’s stats for West Ham

Argentinian holding midfielder Guido Rodriguez joined West Ham on a free transfer from Spanish side Real Betis after his contract expired back in June.

Guido Rodriguez

He looked set to join European giants Barcelona for many months last season, but Lopetegui was able to convince the 30-year-old to move to the London Stadium and be a part of the Spaniard’s project.

Despite the original hype around his move to England, he’s failed to kick on in the Premier League, struggling to make an impact for the Hammers.

He’s started each one of the club’s Premier League matches this season, but has only won 36% of the tackles he’s entered this season, whilst also committing seven fouls.

Rodríguez has also been dribbled past five times – nearly once per game – whilst only completing one dribble all season, looking lacklustre and off the pace in certain situations.

His dismal start to life in London was compounded against Chelsea, after being dragged off by Lopetegui after just 38 minutes and replaced by Tomas Soucek.

However, there’s another talent who plied his trade at the London Stadium before Rodriguez’s arrival, with his teammate also failing to fill the void left by Rice in the summer of 2023.

The West Ham player who’s been as poor as Rodríguez

Edson Alvarez moved to West Ham in a £35m deal from Ajax last summer, brought in to act as a replacement for the outgoing Englishman.

He was an important player for Moyes last season, featuring in 31 league matches, with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola dubbing him a “very intelligent player”.

However, this season he has failed to live up to expectations, with the Mexican midfielder often looking rash and sluggish when called upon in midfield.

He’s only started three games in the Premier League this season, even receiving a red card in the Carabao Cup defeat against Liverpool last week, after two yellows in quick succession.

Alvarez has also committed eight fouls in the league, an average of two per game, whilst only winning 48% of his duels – often coming out second-best in midfield.

He’s failed to be the player many expected him to be upon his move to the London Stadium, with his erratic displays often costing his teammates and Lopetegui – as seen against Liverpool.

The £35m fee the club paid for him last summer now looks to be a mixed investment, with the former Ajax player needing to massively step up his game if he is to be a regular in the side this season.

Lopetegui can finally axe Rodriguez by starting underrated West Ham ace

This bold move could relieve the pressure on the Spaniard…

Back to school for Alice Capsey but England honours beckon

Teenager targeting involvement on A tour to Australia as next step in remarkable rise

Alan Gardner29-Sep-2021It won’t be long, you suspect, before international teams start needing to do their homework on Alice Capsey, the 17-year-old winner of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) Young Player of the Year award. Capsey’s dramatic rise to prominence was one of the stories of the summer – but for now she has homework of her own to focus on, settling back into school life and trying to balance studying for A Levels with persistent talk about her England ambitions.Capsey described winning the inaugural women’s Young Player award as a “complete surprise”, putting her among the few who didn’t see such recognition coming. With Capsey still awaiting her first professional contract she is not currently a member of the players’ union – but the PCA’s Women’s Committee voted to make non-members eligible, and she duly became the youngest recipient of a player-voted award. Her performances in the Hundred, where she scored 150 runs at a higher strike rate than any of her top-order colleagues while also bagging 10 wickets as Oval Invincibles lifted the trophy, immediately made her the most recognisable schoolgirl cricketer in the country. She followed that up with a starring role in South East Stars’ Charlotte Edwards Cup success and, despite being overlooked for England’s T20I and ODI series against New Zealand, won favourable mentions from the captain and coach.Related

“I wouldn’t say I’m famous,” Capsey said of returning to Bede’s School in East Sussex for the start of term with plenty to discuss from her summer holidays. “But yeah, it’s been nice.”It’s great to come back to school and just to be around my friends. They keep you grounded by taking the mick a bit. But no, it’s been quite an easy transition. My teachers have been amazing. Even when I wasn’t at the beginning of term in school, they were sending me work so I was able to keep up with it, which has made it really easy to fit back into classes.”Capsey may have to get cramming, with the prospect of further time away from the classroom over the winter. England will send an A squad to Australia to coincide with their Ashes tour, ahead of the Women’s World Cup in New Zealand, and Capsey has already had discussions with her teachers about what will happen if she gets selected.”We’ve got a break [from cricket] and then stuff starts back up in November,” she said. “Before Christmas, I’ll definitely be looking to get fitter, stronger and look to improve in certain areas of my game, to have one eye on that England A tour to try and get selected for that.”I’m looking to get as much [school] work done this side of Christmas, then I don’t have as much to do after. But all of my work’s done on my laptop, and all the lessons are recorded, so even when I’m out there, I can still do some schoolwork – which as much as it’s probably not what I want to be doing, it’s quite important.”Asked about Capsey after England’s 4-1 ODI series win last week, head coach Lisa Keightley described her as “a really exciting player” who was firmly on the radar. “She’s done really well in T20 cricket this year and it’s really exciting to see how she continues to develop to put pressure on England players, and that’s what we want.”Capsey also helped South East Stars to victory in the Charlotte Edwards Cup•Getty ImagesEngland A will play three T20s and three 50-over games ahead of the Women’s Ashes, which will again be played using the multi-format points system. Capsey’s versatility, as a batter capable of opening or slotting into the middle order while also bowling some canny offbreaks, may help bump her up the lengthening queue for senior recognition, but for now she is content to focus on schoolwork and training.”I don’t know what the performances are doing that but that’s obviously what you want to hear,” she said of Keightley’s praise. “And obviously you want to perform, you have an eye on England, but you want to perform for your team and I think I’ve done that this season, and whatever happens in the future will be great. It’s nice to hear but I’m just taking my performances as they come.”So impressive was Capsey’s summer that she struggled to “pick out just one” highlight among many. But her verdict on the first edition of the Hundred – and its potential appeal to her cohort of fellow students – was unequivocal.”For me personally it’s been massive,” she said. “It’s given me a platform to really show what I can do, but also it’s grown the women’s game so much, for people who weren’t interested in women’s cricket. Because they came along to a double-header, getting involved and actually then really seeing how exciting it can be. I think it’s brought in such a new group of people.”I had friends from school who had no interest in cricket and then came to a game at The Oval and started following it. So I think it’s been really good in the sense that it is definitely bringing new people into women’s cricket. Not only my friends but also family, people like that. They’re now following cricket, and after the Hundred, they were following the Rachael Heyhoe Flint and Charlotte Edwards Cup. And so I think it’s been massive for the influence that it’s brought. I can see the impact it’s starting to make on the women’s game which is amazing to be a part of.”Alice Capsey was speaking following the 52nd cinch PCA Awards, the biggest awards ceremony in English cricket

Rodgers must drop Bernardo to unleash Celtic’s "absolutely brilliant" star

Celtic are back in action in the Scottish Premiership this afternoon as they travel away from Glasgow to take on Ross County in the noon kick-off.

This is the seventh game of the league season and the last one before the October international break, which means that the Hoops have a chance to head into the next two weeks off on a high.

Brendan Rodgers will surely be desperate for a strong reaction from his players after the hugely disappointing result in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Celtic, who had won their opening nine games of the season in all competitions, were beaten 7-1 by Bundesliga giants Dortmund in Germany, and found themselves 5-1 down at half-time.

It was a poor performance from the Scottish giants, who had beaten Slovan 5-1 in their first game, and one that they will want to put behind them quickly, with a strong showing against Ross County today.

Rodgers could look to make some changes to the starting XI from the defeat to Dortmund, after a number of players underwhelmed, and Paulo Bernardo is one player who could lose his place in the team.

Paulo Bernardo's performance in numbers

The Portugal U21 international started his first match in the Champions League this season, after being on the bench against Slovan, and struggled in the middle of the park.

Unfortunately, the former Benfica dynamo was unable to make his mark on the game and did not do enough to suggest to Rodgers that he is ready, at this moment in time, to start in big European clashes, albeit the same could be said of many players after a 7-1 defeat.

The central midfielder was given a player rating of 3/10 by the Daily Record, who wrote that he was ‘taught a lesson’ as part of the Celtic midfield, and Rodgers seemingly agreed that it was a poor display, as he was removed from the side at the interval.

Bernardo struggled in and out of possession for the Scottish giants as Dortmund ran riot in the opening 45 minutes, scoring five of their seven goals in that time.

The 22-year-old maestro only had 12 touches and completed six passes in 45 minutes on the pitch, failing to create a single chance for his teammates, and this illustrates his lack of impact on the ball for Celtic. He could not get free to pick up the ball and make things happen, as the German side overran the Hoops midfield.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Bernardo also ended the half and his performance with zero tackles, clearances, blocks, and interceptions, whilst he was also dribbled past once. This shows that he did virtually nothing to help his team out defensively, as the midfielder failed to disrupt the Dortmund attacks to stop the flow of goals.

Rodgers must now ruthlessly bin the midfielder from the starting XI for this clash with Ross County and bring Reo Hatate back into the line-up.

The Japan international came off the bench in the second half against Dortmund and completed 22 passes, whilst also making one clearance and one interception.

Why Reo Hatate should start

Hatate is a proven Premiership performer who the manager knows can come straight into the team to produce a brilliant performance against Ross County today.

The 26-year-old star is an attack-minded midfielder who can push forward from the middle of the park to make things happen in the final third, with goals and chances created.

As you can see in the table above, the midfield wizard has already racked up six goals and ‘big chances’ created in six appearances in the division this term, and has been unfortunate not to have registered an assist thus far.

The Japanese maestro, who was once hailed as “absolutely brilliant” by journalist Josh Bunting, also managed three goals and four assists in 16 appearances in the division during the 2023/24 campaign.

Hatate has been on the bench in the last two matches for Celtic and should now be brought back into the starting XI to add to his collection of attacking contributions against Ross County, after Bernardo’s poor showing on Tuesday night.

The midfield battle for Celtic

The midfield battle to land the third starting spot next to Arne Engels and Callum McGregor is an interesting one, as Bernardo and Hatate are fighting it out to secure a place in the XI each week.

Luke McCowan, who has scored one goal in three appearances off the bench for Celtic so far, is also in the mix and could push on for a spot in the lineup if he can prove to Rodgers that he has what it takes to be a reliable option in the middle of the park.

Hatate and Bernardo have both already proven that they have the quality to be fantastic operators in midfield for the Hoops in the Premiership, as shown by their respective statistics in the division this season.

As you can see in the table above, both players have created at least three ‘big chances’ and got on the scoresheet from a central midfield position.

Bernardo, however, has offered more to the team out of possession, winning 59% of his duels and making 3.4 tackles and interceptions per game, at Premiership level. That defensive quality was not on display against Dortmund, though, and Rodgers will be hoping that it was a one-off from the Portuguese whiz.

For now, though, Hatate should be awarded a place back in the XI after he outperformed Bernardo off the bench in Germany and a strong performance against Ross County this afternoon could make the position his to lose in the coming weeks after the break.

Arteta confirms another Arsenal blow with "incredible" player injured

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has confirmed an injury blow for one of his “incredible” players, who will miss their trip to Bournemouth this weekend alongside club captain Martin Odegaard.

The Gunners remain unbeaten in the Premier League, despite having to contend with a plethora of injury issues so far this season.

Mikel Arteta shares "crucial" Martin Odegaard injury update out of Arsenal

The Gunners need him back as soon as possible.

Alongside Odegaard, their main creator, the likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Mikel Merino, Gabriel Jesus, Ben White, Jurrien Timber, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Kieran Tierney are just some of the names who’ve been forced to sit on the sidelines through fitness issues.

Arteta simply must be commended for managing to guide Arsenal through very tough contests lately without some important players, having come away from games against Tottenham, Man City, Atalanta and PSG in the Champions League unscathed.

The Gunners next take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, a game many expect them to win comfortably, especially considering the plethora of good news coming out of N5 today in regard to injury scares.

Bukayo Saka picked up a hamstring problem on international duty with England, while winger Gabriel Martinelli sustained a calf injury on his tour of duty with Brazil.

Havertz also missed Germany’s games against Bosnia and the Netherlands, staying back at London Colney following an apparent knee issue, and Thomas Partey stayed home with Arsenal through illness – choosing not to travel and represent Ghana.

Right-back Ben White has missed Arsenal’s last four matches, last featuring in their 2-2 draw away to City, with fellow defender Oleksandr Zinchenko also absent for the last few weeks after his calf injury.

Jurrien Timber was forced off with a muscle problem during Arsenal’s 2-0 win over PSG in the Champions League, missing the Netherlands’ games against Hungary and Germany, whilst also being completely absent for the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Southampton just before the break.

As you can see, Arteta has had quite a few selection headaches to deal with. However, in Arteta’s pre-match press conference, the tactician shared that all the aforementioned players have a chance of featuring against Bournemouth this weekend – in what is a real boost for Arsenal.

Arteta confirms Takehiro Tomiyasu injury blow at Arsenal

However, one man who will miss the clash with Odegaard is versatile £100,000-per-week defender Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Japan international played 13 minutes of Arsenal’s last match against Southampton, after recovering from a long-term injury which kept him out since pre-season. Worrying reports then emerged this week that Tomiyasu suffered a recurrence of that knee injury, with Arsenal fearing he could miss another month.

Now, Arteta has confirmed Tomiyasu’s injury blow for Arsenal, sharing an update this morning in his press conference.

“We don’t know that (how long he will be out for),” said Arteta on Tomiyasu.

“It doesn’t look like, hopefully, a long period but we have to see when he comes back how he reacts to the load and to the impact on the pitch as well.

“But we really need him, he has been incredible, his work rate, the amount of hours he has put in to get back. He did it and he was in great shape – and now he has got something else again. But, we are all behind him. He needs our support, and hopefully he will be fine.”

Netherlands, Namibia look to fly their flags high at T20 World Cup

Both teams also carry a few South African names as they look to deflect pressure ahead of the tournament’s opening round

Firdose Moonda14-Oct-2021The T20 World Cup is all about winning but Namibia’s Gerhard Erasmus and Netherlands’ Pieter Seelaar tussled over whose team will fly further under the radar in a bid to deflect pressure off their sides ahead of the tournament’s opening round. When asked about the expectation facing Associate nations keen to punch above their weight on the biggest stage, Seelaar put the ball firmly in Group A favourites Sri Lanka’s court, saying, “Sri Lanka need to go through; we want to go through, so that’s the difference,” before Erasmus chipped in with, “Maybe I will grab the underdog tag from Pieter and we’ll go with that.”There were chuckles all around but in reality both captains are feeling the immense weight they carry ahead of what could be the most important week in many of their cricketing careers.Related

Ireland stun Bangladesh; Munsey, Cross warm up with fifties

Netherlands had not qualified for either of the last two 50-over World Cups and did not make it to the second round of the last T20 World Cup and want to rebuild their reputation as one of the stronger “smaller” sides. Namibia have never been at a T20 World Cup and have not played in an major event since the 2003 World Cup and believe they can surpass those glory days almost two decades later.”We had (2003 World Cup captain) Deon Kotze at our send-off event, speaking very fondly. He branded us as being a better team than theirs which is a great honour,” Erasmus said. “Those are individuals we looked up to and guys that sparked something for us. They drew a line in the sand back then and 18 years later, although it’s too long for Cricket Namibia’s liking, we are back at it and hopefully we can continue.”While neither Erasmus nor Seelaar was willing to label themselves their country’s best just yet, they both believe they have the ingredients to fly their flags high, albeit some of their key components come from elsewhere. Incidentally, the same elsewhere.Gerhard Erasmus: “You can’t get anything better than playing lots of games of cricket but we’re a bit over the warm-up games now and we’re raring to go”•Getty ImagesNetherlands are headlined by former South African allrounder Roelof van der Merwe and former Warriors player Colin Ackermann, who Seelar singled out as being two players that give them the edge. “We’ve got Colin Ackermann and Roelof van der Merwe – two guys who bat in the top six, who can also bowl,” he said. And Namibia have a South African-heavy coaching staff led by Pierre de Bruyn, with Albie Morkel as assistant and Easterns coach Richard das Neves as a consultant. They will also give an international debut to former South African allrounder David Wiese, whose journeyman T20 career brings vast expertise to the group.”Not only does he bring skills with bat, ball and in the field but he has been to a lot of tournaments and brings a lot of experience having played around the world,” Erasmus said. “He has been amazing with fitting in the changeroom and he is only going to add value to this tournament.”While neither Namibia nor Netherlands played any T20 cricket in the pandemic-affected year of 2020, they are both reasonably happy with the recent preparation they have had, especially Namibia. “We’ve been able to play a lot of cricket back home. Coming from winter, we had to go and find our own cricket. We managed to do that right around Southern Africa,” Erasmus said.Namibia hosted Uganda, a Zimbabwean and South African Emerging side, and a South African domestic team, Titans, which included Test captain Dean Elgar and who Namibia beat. “All those teams brought different challenges. You can’t get anything better than playing lots of games of cricket but we’re a bit over the warm-up games now and we’re raring to go.”Seelaar and his side feel the same. They won the qualifying event for this tournament almost two years ago and are keen to see if they can perform as well now as they did then. On paper, they are probably considered to be as likely as Ireland to progress to the main draw but Seelaar was not going to go there. “There’s no clear favourite and no weak side,” he said, before adding that Sri Lanka would not have it easy. “I wouldn’t say Sri Lanka is definitely* going to go through, they are going to have a hard time beating all three of us.”*October 18 – This quote was amended to include the word “definitely”

Ange can solve Spurs’ Son issue by signing £51m star admired by Zidane

It has been a roller coaster of a season for Tottenham Hotspur so far this year.

Ange Postecoglou’s side currently sit in eighth place in the Premier League, and while they have picked up some impressive wins against the likes of Manchester United and West Ham United, they have also lost to Brighton & Hove Albion and, most recently, Crystal Palace.

However, while the North Londoners have been frustratingly inconsistent in the league, they have been exceptional in the cup competitions and are currently undefeated in both the Europa League and Conference League.

Moreover, Postecoglou got one over Pep Guardiola in the former on Wednesday night and now has a real chance to end the club’s trophy drought in the coming months, but a problem is brewing under the surface, and it involves Son Heung-min.

Spurs' Son Heung-min problem

Okay, let’s get straight to the point here before the pitchforks come out. Spurs’ issue with Son is not his form or ability; it is his age and the need to find a long-term replacement.

The South Korean legend is still a productive member of Postecoglou’s squad, but at 32 years old, he is far closer to the end of his career than the start.

As fans will attest, he is less effective on the wing than he used to be, and that’s not surprising as, according to research conducted by The Athletic, wingers typically enter their peak years at around 26 years old.

So, with the former Bayer Leverkusen star in the latter stages of his career, Daniel Levy and Co need to find another long-term replacement, as the burden cannot fall exclusively on Timo Werner due to his ability or Mikey Moore due to his age – he’s too talented to risk burnout.

So, the ideal way forward would be to sign a replacement for Werner in the summer, who could compete with Son for game time now and then compete with Moore in a few years when the 32-year-old retires or moves on.

The good news is that the club were supposedly interested in the perfect candidate earlier this year, a player admired by Zinedine Zidane.

Why Takefusa Kubo would be a brilliant option for Spurs

Yes, the player in question is Real Sociedad star Takefusa Kubo, who was touted for a £51m move to Spurs during the summer, and while that’s no small fee, it’s a transfer Levy and Co should look at again in 2025.

Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo

The Japanese international has been impressing for La Real for a few seasons now, racking up 18 goals and 14 assists for the club in just 98 appearances, which equates to a goal involvement every 3.06 games.

Moreover, while the 23-year-old, whom Zidane once described as a “very interesting player”, has spent most of his career playing off the right, he is no stranger to playing off the left either, suggesting that he’d have no trouble slotting into Son’s role in N17.

Real Sociedad winger Takefusa Kubo

On top of that, as the “insane” winger, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is 23 years old, he strikes the perfect balance between being experienced and still young enough to further develop, meaning he could be the ideal long-term competition for Moore when he’s old enough to start for the first team regularly.

Lastly, the former FC Tokyo prospect already knows Postecoglou, as he played under him during a previous loan stint with Yokohama F. Marinos, so he’ll have a rough idea of the Australian’s methods and demands.

Ultimately, Son is a Spurs icon and should remain a productive first-team member for at least a couple more seasons. However, time comes for us all, and to make sure the burden of replacing the South Korean does not fall squarely on the shoulders of Moore, Levy and Co should look to bring Kubo to the club in 2025.

The talented attacker never lived up to his potential at Spurs.
