Man Utd’s "unplayable" Solskjaer signing is now worth £33m less

Simply put, Manchester United are on fire at the moment.

Erik ten Hag's team is one of three in the Premier League to have not tasted defeat in the new year, and they've won all of their last four league games.

Rasmus Hojlund

The latest of those was against Luton Town on Sunday, where they narrowly won 2-1, despite having the opportunity to hit at least five.

However, there was one player who cut out a frustrated figure while sitting on the bench at the weekend, with his Red Devils career not exactly going to plan.

Amad Diallo's start to life in Manchester

Ivorian wonderkid Amad Diallo announced himself to the world as a 17-year-old for Atalanta in 2019, coming off the bench to score on his debut in a 7-1 win over Udinese.

In January 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally got his man, as United secured the signature of the young winger in a whopping £37m deal, despite only playing five games for Atalanta's first team.

Amad Diallo

He immediately joined the academy upon his arrival, where he proved to be levels above those both on his team and the opposition, scoring twice against Liverpool U21s and registering four goal contributions against Blackburn Rovers U21s.

Amad's first real taste of action at United came in the Europa League against AC Milan, when he replaced Anthony Martial at halftime to take on a false nine role. Just minutes after his introduction, he already had the ball in the back of the net after making a darting run in behind and finishing with an excellent instinctive header.

Unfortunately, this has been the pinnacle of his United career so far.

Amad Diallo's record in 2024

The 5 foot 8 gem's first loan spell away from the Red Devils was to Rangers, yet that move wasn't exactly successful, with Diallo starting just four league games and featuring on the bench in every game on their run to the Europa League final.

Luckily, his second loan spell was far more fruitful, as last season he was one of the most influential players in the Championship, where he was dubbed "unplayable" by journalist Graham Falk. His time at Sunderland ended with a record of 13 goals and three assists in 27 league starts.

Amad Diallo for Sunderland

The left-footed whizz has seen his development and momentum from last season come to a complete stop, with an injury in pre-season keeping him out of action until December, and since then, Ten Hag has prevented him from going out on loan for the rest of the season. The former Black Cats ace has played just 36 minutes all campaign.

To this day, Diallo is still regarded as one of the most exciting talents at the club, and if it weren't for Alejandro Garnacho arguably being one of their most dangerous players in the team and playing in the 21-year-old's position, he may have had more chances to work his magic on the field.

However, his lack of action in the United first team has caused his value to drop significantly, with the gem now estimated to be worth around £4m, according to CIES Football Observatory, which is £33m less than what Solskjaer and co paid for him in 2021.

Although United did massively overpay for Diallo, he is still an exciting prospect with bags of potential. All he needs is an opportunity to showcase what he's really about.

If not, it looks set to be another expensive mistake of the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Got the opposite of what we wanted from the pitch – Shakib Al Hasan

He did, however, say that fewer cross-batted shots may have helped Bangladesh’s cause on the second day

Mohammad Isam06-Sep-2019The Chattogram pitch was the “complete opposite” of what Bangladesh expected it to be, captain Shakib Al Hasan said after the second day’s play, hinting that their line-up packed with spinners should have been enough for the ground staff to know what they were looking for. Shakib said he was surprised that his bowlers could take five wickets on the first day, but admitted that fewer cross-batted shots may have helped Bangladesh’s cause when they batted.Bangladesh are currently 148 runs behind Afghanistan’s 342, after they collapsed to 104 for 6 in their first innings soon after the tea interval. Mominul Haque’s half-century was the only retort as batsmen like Mahmudullah, Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar got into trouble trying to play the ball – which kept low occasionally – from the crease.”We didn’t expect to play on this wicket, so the situation became difficult for us,” Shakib said. “We got the complete opposite of what we expected from the wicket. But it doesn’t mean that we can’t do well here. Good teams are those who can answer questions outside the box. We will try to give those answers.”It is definitely disappointing, but there’s no point talking about it. We need to find a way to come back from this situation, which is more important. Seeing our XI you can all figure out what type of pitch we expected. But I wouldn’t call the wicket unplayable because of the way Mosaddek [Hossain] and Taijul [Islam] batted, but we could have applied ourselves better. They proved that it is possible to stay at the crease and also score runs. I think we could have scored more runs had we applied ourselves better.”Shakib bemoaned the lack of a wristspinner in his line-up, particularly seeing Afghanistan’s trio – Rashid Khan, Qais Ahmed and Zahir Khan – trouble his batsmen. “The difference is that they have wristspinners, we have fingerspinners. [Mohammad] Nabi took two wickets but our fingerspinners took all ten wickets. Their wristspinners were more effective, and without one on a flat wicket, it was difficult for us,” he said.Shakib, however, remained optimistic about a fightback. “I expect these two wickets to bat out at least the first session. If we can cut down the deficit by 70 or 80 runs, it will give us a big advantage. It will be a tough challenge but the way they batted, I can believe.”But then we have to bowl really well, which teams have done in the past in the second innings. Our bowlers have to do something magical, after which we have to depend on our batsmen.”Reiterating that the Bangladesh batsmen should stay away from going deep into their crease – because the pitch isn’t offering enough bounce – to play shots square of the wicket, particularly against Rashid, Shakib said, “He has a bit of pace in his bowling, and the wicket is [staying] a bit low, so he became quite effective. Those who tried to play him off the back foot, like [Mahmudullah] Riyad and Liton, missed the ball. It kept low, which makes playing cross-batted shots difficult.”

Italy player ratings vs Croatia: What a finish! Mattia Zaccagni's last-second stunner sends Italy into the last 16 of Euro 2024 and effectively ends Luka Modric's Croatia career

The Lazio winger came off the bench to score a last-gasp goal that keeps Italy's title defence alive – but almost certainly eliminates Croatia.

What a finish! Seriously, what a finish! In every possible way. On an incredibly dramatic night in Leipzig, we saw the end of a glorious era of Croatian football, with Luka Modric's men knocked out of Euro 2024 thanks to the most sublime finish from Mattia Zaccagni with the last kick of the game.

The goal cancelled out Modric's opener, which had come just seconds after the legendary No.10 had seen a penalty saved by the brilliant Gigi Donnarumma, and means Italy progress to the last 16 at the expense of the Croats, who, with just two points to their name after this 1-1 draw, have next-to-no hope of progress as one of the third-place finishers.

Below, GOAL rates all of the Italy players on show as the defending champions kept their title defence alive with a stunning strike in the eight minute of injury time that sets up a meeting with Switzerland in Berlin on Saturday evening…

GettyGoalkeeper & Defence

Gianluigi Donnarumma (8/10):

It looked like the goalkeeper's heroics were going to go to waste, which would have been so harsh on Donnarumma, who made some fantastic stops, the pick of which was his penalty save from Modric.

Matteo Darmian (6/10):

Brought into the team to form a back three that looked so comfortable until the penalty sparked chaos. Darmian, though, was decent for the most part.

Alessandro Bastoni (6/10):

Rather damningly, Italy's most dangerous weapon, but twice failed to put away two great chances. Hoovered up possession for Italy but also appeared to duck out of the way of the cross that led to Modric's goal.

Riccardo Calafiori (8/10):

The benefits of playing the versatile Bologna defender on the left-hand side of the back three were there for all to see, as he created two chances in the first half alone before creating the equaliser with a characteristically brilliant break into enemy territory.

AdvertisementGetty Midfield

Giovanni Di Lorenzo (5/10):

Credit where it's due, he recovered well from being torn to shreds by Nico Williams, winning plenty of duels. His passing wasn't great, though, and he was too slow to react on Croatia's goal.

Nicolo Barella (6/10):

Caused Croatia problems with his precise and progressive passing in the first half but his influence faded in the second half – when Italy needed their best midfielder most. Still, he kept running – and perhaps more importantly – keeping the ball moving right until the end.

Jorginho (6/10):

A much, much better display from the Arsenal man (which wasn't hard after his shocker against Spain!). He helped Italy take control of the game after a sluggish start, but he was sacrificed in the dying stages as Italy pressed for an equaliser as he was offering nothing offensively.

Lorenzo Pellegrini (4/10):

The only midfielder to really get into dangerous areas in the first half, while he also made a couple of timely interceptions, but he was withdrawn at the break after giving the ball away nine times in 45 minutes.

Federico Dimarco (3/10):

A shockingly ineffective display from the highly-rated Inter wing-back, who contributed little defensively and absolutely nothing going forward before being hauled off before the hour mark.

Getty Attack

Mateo Retegui (6/10):

Seriously lively in the first half, going close with a fine header from an inviting Calafiori cross, but Josko Gvardiol's head deflected the strike wide. Still, probably did enough to hold onto his starting spot.

Giacomo Raspadori (6/10):

A surprise starter and he justified his inclusion by creating four chances in total and working his socks off until he was taken off late on.

Getty Subs & Manager

Davide Frattesti (3/10):

Replaced Pellegrini during the interval and almost immediately gave away a penalty with a stray arm.

Fedierico Chiesa (5/10):

Brought on right after Croatia broke the deadlock and was full of intent but only created one decent chance.

Gianluca Scamacca (N/A):

Thrown on for the last 20 minutes after being dropped for this game, but couldn't get on the end of Chiesa's cross.

Nicolo Fagioli (N/A):

Not enough time to impress himself on the game after taking over in midfield from Jorginho.

Mattia Zaccagni (7/10):

Only came on with just over five minutes of normal time remaining but he earned Italy a 1-1 draw – and qualification for the last 16 – with a Del Piero-esque finish right at the death.

Luciano Spalletti (7/10):

The personnel and formation changes worked. Italy played impressively for nearly an hour, looking comfortable at the back and menacing going forward. A minute of madness turned the game on its head but the Azzurri recovered and deservedly got a draw thanks to one of Spalletti's subs, Zaccagni, who also impressed off the bench against Spain.

Amelia Kerr signs with Brisbane Heat

The New Zealand allrounder joins Australia’s Beth Mooney, Delissa Kimmince and Jess Jonassen as the players with international experience in the Heat squad

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Aug-2019New Zealand’s legbreak-bowling allrounder Amelia Kerr has signed with Brisbane Heat for the upcoming season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). She joins Australia’s Beth Mooney, Delissa Kimmince and Jess Jonassen as the players with international experience in the Heat squad.Kerr, 18, has already played 29 ODIs and 24 T20Is. In June 2018, she hit a double-century and claimed a five-for in the same ODI, against Ireland. Among the records she broke that day was Belinda Clark’s 21-year-old record of the highest individual score in women’s ODIs, as well as becoming the youngest player – male or female – to score a double-century across formats in international cricket.Kerr said she was excited to be a part of the WBBL. “I’ve watched it regularly at home and was seriously impressed at the way the Heat won the title last year,” she said. “A lot of the White Ferns players have had the chance to play in the WBBL and I know it is highly regarded around the world. Now I have the chance to play and I’m confident it’s going to be a great experience.”Heat coach Ashley Noffke was equally excited to secure Kerr’s services. “Anyone who has followed cricket would be aware that Amelia is a pretty special talent,” he said. “We’ve enjoyed having her with the Queensland Fire squad this week and she demonstrated quite quickly how focused and determined she is.”The WBBL is scheduled to begin on October 18. The Heat are the defending champions, having beaten Sydney Sixers by three wickets in the final last season.

Arsenal hold talks with World Cup star reps as club work to stop him going

Arsenal have held talks with the agents of a midfielder who starred at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as sporting director Edu seemingly begins work on signing a new engine room man this summer.

Arteta keen on signing new midfielder at Arsenal

The north Londoners were seriously linked with a new midfield running man over the January window, and have been regularly tipped to sign one over the last few months.

Edu now "ready" to make Arsenal move for £8.5m-a-year striker

The Gunners are set to throw their hat in the ring for the Napoli man this summer, but face plenty of competition

ByBen Browning Feb 18, 2024

Both Jorginho and Mohamed Elneny are set to leave this summer as things stand, with their contracts set to expire in June. Thomas Partey's reoccurring injury problems have also been a real issue for Mikel Arteta over 2023/2024, perhaps highlighting the real need for another option.

Reports have suggested that Arteta signing a new midfielder later in 2024 is certainly possible, alongside full-backs and a striker (Sam Dean, The Telegraph). Partey's contract will have just 12 more months by the time summer comes around as well, so it's pretty inevitable that Arsenal will need to shore up that area of the squad soon.

Everton star Amadou Onana is among the names to have been linked with Arsenal recently, as well as Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi, while Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was a name very regularly mentioned in the build up to January.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

All of these options, though, could prove expensive given their current value. Edu may well cast his net far and wide in search of the most quality, affordable option, with Juventus star Adrien Rabiot coming as an intriguing name.

The Frenchman, who's bagged four goals and three assists over 21 Serie A starts for Juve so far this season, is out of contract later this year and could join Arsenal on a Bosman deal.

Rabiot's contract situation has alerted Gunners chiefs, among a host of other European sides, as journalist Graeme Bailey explains for HITC.

Arsenal hold talks with Rabiot agents as Juventus work to keep him

According to his information, Arsenal have held talks with the agents of Rabiot recently as they gauge the prospect of him potentially making a move to England for free.

Juve, though, are not keen on losing one of their star regulars. Massimiliano Allegri's side are said to be working hard on stopping him from leaving as they attempt to tie him down with a new deal.

Rabiot, alongside his brilliant league form, also played a key role in France's run to the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.

“Rabiot? I didn’t know him before this World Cup," said Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate during the tournament (Calciomercato via Juventus.com).

"I had never lived with him in the group. Talk to everyone. He is a key player in this competition. Adrien takes us a lot, in defence and attack.”

Gareth Southgate slammed by Wayne Rooney after his decision 'killed' two England stars at Euro 2024 ahead of last-16 tie

Rooney critical of Southgate selectionsKeen for Mainoo & Gordon to startEngland set for last 16 clashWHAT HAPPENED?

In a column for , Rooney said Mainoo, Gordon and Cole Palmer have all staked solid claims to starting for England against Slovakia in the knockout based on how each performed off the bench in the group clash with Slovenia.

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Southgate stuck quite rigidly to his starting lineup during the opening phase, keeping the same XI for England's first two games and then only swapping out Trent Alexander-Arnold for Conor Gallagher in the third. But Mainoo and Gordon, in particular, both made a positive difference, leading fans and Rooney to hope that they will now get the chance to start in the last 16.

WHAT ROONEY SAID

Rooney said: "Against Slovenia, Kobbie Mainoo staked a big claim for a starting place, Cole Palmer was very good and Anthony Gordon, though he played only a few minutes, had a couple of excellent touches. At just the right time in the tournament, Gareth may have stumbled upon the right team. I would play at least two of those three youngsters against Slovakia – and, in fact, I said before the tournament that my starting XI for the knockout stage would have Mainoo and Gordon in it.

"None of what happened in the group stage surprised me. I would never have played Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield and expected that, when the experiment didn't work, Gareth would try Conor Gallagher. Gareth killed both a bit by discarding them, but in each case, it was the right call and when Mainoo came in you saw him making forward runs and showing composure on the ball. "Palmer is just suited to international football. He can take the ball, he's calm on it and has the personality you need on that stage. Gordon is more direct than the other two and ensures there is a good blend."

Reports already suggest Kobbie Mainoo will start the Slovakia game and Gordon would be well-placed to come in for Phil Foden should he not be quite up to speed after taking a short leave of absence for the birth of his third child. If England win, they will progress to a quarter-final against either Italy or Switzerland.

Newcastle must unleash "infectious" ace with 1 PL start in 23/24

Newcastle United have been playing outside of the sphere of form and fluency that captured the awe and admiration of many for some time now, with Eddie Howe's side knowing that failing to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon could be detrimental in the fight for top four.

Indeed, Champions League qualification seems a stretch as it is, with the Magpies a staggering 15 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa after 26 matches, though the new UEFA coefficient rankings could open up Europe's elite club competition through a fifth-place finish.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

The crux of Newcastle's problems stem from their shoddy defensive record, having gone nine Premier League matches without a clean sheet and shipped 31 goals from the previous 12 fixtures.

The continued absence of Nick Pope, compounded by the injury problems that have ravaged Sven Botman's former fluidity and dominance, is damaging, like a spreading stain, and Howe must now ensure that St. James' Park restores its imperiousness to bat away Wolves and mount a late-season purple patch.

Newcastle team news

It would be remiss to discuss Newcastle's drop in form this season without acknowledging the catalogue of injuries that have made life rather tough for Howe and co.

Pope, as mentioned, continues to recuperate from a dislocated shoulder, while Matt Targett is nearing a comeback but will not be risked this weekend.

Dan Burn has not been at the races recently and will likely be rested in place of Tino Livramento, who is much better equipped to deal with the pace and directness of Pedro Neto.

Rested in midweek as modest Newcastle defeated Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup, Botman is likely to return to the starting line-up in place of Jamal Lascelles.

Why Sven Botman is underperforming

Botman signed for Newcastle from Lille in a deal worth around £35m back in July 2022 and he was mesmerising in his defensive duties last term as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.

“Sven is looking good,” said Howe. “We just felt with Sven, he would benefit more from training than playing. He’s another player that’s come back from a longer-term injury. He’s come back into the team, but we just felt he needed more individualised training to get back to his very best. We could definitely see him (against Wolves) though."

Newcastle defender Sven Botman.

The 24-year-old played 73 minutes one week ago as his side were thumped to a 4-1 defeat in London by Arsenal, and after scoring an own goal and making another big defensive error, the Dutchman was branded with a 3/10 match rating by The Shields Gazette.

Still, Botman has proven his worth as one of the Premier League's best defenders and he will return to form soon, and against Wolves, he has the perfect opportunity to do just that.

Crisp in his distribution, completing 91% of his passes, and usually sturdy in his defensive efforts, winning 63% of his contested duels (as per Sofascore), Botman will be crucial against a dogged and uniform Old Gold side that will think they have a real chance of winning on Tyneside.

O'Neil benches Doyle in predicted Wolves lineup vs Newcastle

Wolves face Newcastle United in the Premier League today

ByRoss Kilvington Mar 2, 2024

The rearguard is not the only area of concern for Howe though, and while last weekend's loss in London was a bitter pill to swallow, the goalscoring return of Joe Willock off the bench added an invaluable dimension to the engine room, and now he must be unleashed from the outset.

Why Joe Willock should be unleashed vs Wolves

Willock did actually start earlier this week as Newcastle prevailed against Blackburn, playing just over an hour of action before understandably being withdrawn early.

The £80k-per-week star didn't impress, completing 87% of his passes but only managing 30 touches – less than goalkeeper Martin Dubravka's 40 – and winning just one of his eight contested duels and failing with each of his four attempted dribbles, also being dribbled past twice.

Joe Willock.

But having impressed last weekend against his former club Arsenal, winning two of three duels and making a tackle to complement his consolation strike, there will be hope that he has recovered enough coherence in his play to make a mark against Wolves, who are actually one point ahead of tenth-placed United after a burst of form under Gary O'Neil.

Willock has been terribly unfortunate on the injury front this season but he was electrifying in his creative prowess last term, creating 12 big chances and providing six assists in the Premier League to offer a constant outlet for the likes of Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

This term, however, his injuries have left him with only one Premier League start so far, so that sure could change as Howe seeks different routes to clinch success.

As per FBref, the one-time Hale End graduate ranks among the top 16% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 2% for assists, the top 1% for progressive carries and the top 2% for successful take-ons per 90.

The 5 foot 10 dynamo has been lauded for his “infectious” presence on the pitch by Howe and Newcastle could certainly do with this now.

Dynamic and combative, Willock is the missing link in midfield and his return to the starting line-up will only serve to enhance those around him, boosting Bruno Guimaraes' elite distribution and Sean Longstaff's industriousness.

Joe WIllock.

Newcastle's porous backline is a far cry from last year's strength and solidity, but the issues pervade the whole squad and Willock's inclusion and success will be vital to the rekindling of form that may yet see Howe engineer an emphatic end to the campaign.

Still in the FA Cup and with it all to play for in the Premier League, Willock's return comes at the perfect time, and he might just play a defining role in the outcome this afternoon.

The Premier League side hope to sell the 26-year-old in the summer transfer window amid claims of a breakdown in his relationship with manager Erik ten Hag. The Red Devils were initially said to be asking for around £80 million ($102m) for him, but now claims they would be willing to accept £60m ($76m) to get rid of him.

Amy Satterthwaite climbs to top of ODI batting rankings… while on maternity leave

India’s Smriti Mandhana slipped to the second spot after missing the ODI series against South Africa

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2019If there isn’t a “World’s No. 1 Mom” mug at Amy Satterthwaite’s home, it’s time to get one. The New Zealand captain has been on maternity leave since August 2019 expecting her first child with wife and team-mate Lea Tahuhu but, due to a quirk of the ICC rankings system, she has become the world’s top-ranked batter in ODI cricket despite not playing a 50-over game in seven months. The 33-year-old had been in glorious form in 2019, scoring 346 runs in six innings, including a best of 92 against Australia.India opener Smriti Mandhana had held that position at the last update but she missed the recent three-match series against South Africa with a toe injury and has now dropped four points behind the new leader.South Africa’s young opener Laura Wolvaardt climbed six places to break into the top ten after her scores of 39, 69 and 23 against India this month. She is currently on the eighth position with 685 rating points. South Africa’s fast bowling duo of Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail also strengthened their position in the bowling chart. Kapp climbed two places and occupies the fifth spot while Ismail gained one place to move to seventh.India’s Jhulan Goswami, who failed to pick any wickets in the second ODI and didn’t play in the third, slipped four places and is currently at the sixth spot in the table headed by Australia’s left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen.Apart from picking up four wickets, Kapp also scored 94 runs in three innings that helped her jump six spots in the ODI allrounders’ rankings. She is in the second place with 370 points, but well behind Australia’s Ellyse Perry, who has 523 points.
