January interest in Traore intensifies

Interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Adama Traore is growing ahead of the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Catalan publication El Nacional, who claim that newly-rich Newcastle United are the latest side to take an interest in the Wolves winger, with the Magpies believed to be keeping a very close eye on the situation of 25-year-old ahead of a potential swoop in the January transfer window.

Indeed, previous reports have claimed that Liverpool are also considering a move for the Spain international in the winter market, a switch that Traore is thought to be open to, while Tottenham Hotspur could also reignite their summer interest in the winger come January.

Shi must not sell

Considering just how important a part of the Wolves side Traore has been in recent seasons, should the club’s director of football, Jeff Shi, decide to cash in on the forward this January, it would undoubtedly be a decision that would leave the Molineux faithful livid.

Indeed, while the winger is yet to score or register an assist over his nine Premier League appearances this term, the £27m-rated man has nevertheless impressed, creating two big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 1.6 key passes, taking 1.8 shots and completing a whopping 6.1 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the player who Jurgen Klopp claimed is “undefendable” against average a SofaScore match rating of 7.24, ranking him as Bruno Lage’s best performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, should Shi wish to give Wolves the best possible chance of securing a top ten finish in the league this season, he simply must avoid all temptation to sanction the £46k-per-week man’s sale come January.

Traore is undoubtedly a player who possesses the ability to fire his side towards the European places come the end of the current campaign.

Rangers fans slam Goldson vs Motherwell

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been slamming Connor Goldson for his part in the opening goal for Motherwell in their Premiership clash this lunchtime.

There was some sloppy play between him and James Tavernier which led to a corner for the hosts early on in the first half, which culminated in Bevis Mugabi putting the ball in the net to put Steven Gerrard’s side 1-0 down.

Mugabi was Goldson’s man on the corner, and he left him to ghost to the back post after Allan McGregor had saved an initial header.

Luckily for the Gers defender, Tavernier and Fashion Sakala spared his blushes with two quickfire goals before the half-time whistle, altering what could have been a very different interval team talk by Gerrard, with the champions eventually running out comprehensive winners at Fir Park.

Nonetheless, it did not stop plenty of the Ibrox faithful voicing their anger at the English centre-back over his role in Motherwell’s opener.

Rangers fans on Goldson mistakes

These Light Blues supporters slammed Goldson on Twitter after his mistakes cost them a goal, with one fan even going as far as to claim that he was ‘amateur’ in his defending.

The 28-year-old had come under fire from some fans after his recent performance against Aberdeen, and a minority of the Ibrox faithful even called for him to be sold following his lapses today.

Hussey not fretting over Test spot

At a time when he should be getting acclimatised to India, Michael Hussey woke up to the news that the selectors back home are having a tough time debating his Test spot

Sidharth Monga in Vadodara24-Oct-2009On the eve of the seven-ODI series, during a transitional phase in his career, at a time when he should be getting acclimatised to India, Michael Hussey woke up to the news that the selectors back home are having a tough time debating his Test spot. So much for a good beginning. Hussey is coming to terms with life as a mortal, so much so that at the back of his mind, he knows how crucial these seven games are. For the moment, the batsman assures he’s not losing sleep over his Test place.”I saw the headline, but I have got these seven one-dayers against India right now,” Hussey said. “You know I am sure the selectors will look at the form and performance of all the players and not just mine before they make a decision on the team, but I am not worried about that and I am focussed on these seven ODIs.”From the Bradmanesque perch, Hussey has averaged only 30.40 in his last 15 Tests, during which he scored just one century, that too in a lost cause at The Oval. Five Australian batsmen scored more than him in the series. Before the Ashes, he struggled badly against South Africa, averaging 19.72 in the six Tests at home and away.In the same period, the last 12 months, he has not done too badly in the ODIs, averaging 40.61 in 27 matches. He will take any help that the upcoming ODIs against India can accord him. “I don’t know [if runs here will help secure my place], but any good form and good runs will help,” he said. “If I stick to the things I do well, then I can perform consistently for Australia.”Hussey has both the opportunity and extra responsibility in the absence of Michael Clarke. On the one hand, it makes him and Ricky Ponting the only experienced batsmen in the middle order, but it also gets Hussey a promotion. That will give him a chance to add to just the one international century over the last year. And he will know centuries might count when it comes to getting another chance in the Tests.Australia will return home to play three Tests against West Indies, before taking on Pakistan later in the summer.

Villa fans erupt over more Gerrard news

After Aston Villa confirmed the appointment of Premier League legend Steven Gerrard to the managerial helm, they have now shared more news involving the 41-year-old which has delighted numerous fans.

Gerrard arrives at Villa Park aiming to turn around the fortunes of a team currently on a five-game losing streak in the Premier League. Indeed, their last victory came away to Manchester United in late September and a dismal run of results since then cost former boss Dean Smith his job in the Midlands.

A Scottish Premiership title winner, the Liverpudlian’s arrival signals a new era at Villa Park, and one where he will need sufficient backing both and off the field to succeed.

In an update, the club have now confirmed more news on Gerrard as his own vision for Villa begins to slowly take shape.

Following the 41-year-old into the club, the former England international’s backroom team has now been announced, with Gary McAllister (Assistant Head Coach), Michael Beale (Assistant Head Coach), Tom Culshaw (Technical Coach), Scott Mason (Lead Analyst) and Jordan Milsom (Head of Fitness and Conditioning) all arriving.

Meanwhile, some staff members from before Gerrard’s arrival like Austin MacPhee, Aaron Danks and Neil Cutler will also remain at the club.

Flocking to this update, there are a few popular names in there going by the reaction of some Villa supporters, with one man in particular certainly pleasing Villans.

Many fans are delighted that goalkeeping coach Cutler is set to stay, with one fan calling this decision ‘big’, and it’s little wonder given his reputation at the club. Indeed, current Villa number one Emiliano Martinez called him ‘one of the best coaches in England’ (avfc.co.uk).

Official debut for enhanced review system

The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) makes a return after a series of trials for over a year, with the first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan at the University Oval in Dunedin starting tomorrow

Cricinfo staff23-Nov-2009The Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) makes its official debut, after a series of trials for over a year, tomorrow with the first Test between New Zealand and Pakistan at the University Oval in Dunedin. The system will also be used in the Tests between Australia and West Indies, which begin later this week. There were doubts over whether it would be implemented for this series, due to the high implementation costs involved, but an agreement was reached with Animation Research Limited, a Dunedin-based company, to supply their Virtual Eye ball-tracking technology. The third umpire will now have access to more advanced technology, like the Hot Spot.”With the improvement of technology, umpires’ mistakes are exposed and scrutinised like never before,” Dave Richardson, the ICC general manager – cricket, said. “This system will help alleviate the problems created when mistakes – which appear obvious on replays – are made.”The system allows television technology to be used in a way that will not result in too many delays, will not de-skill the umpires and will take some pressure off the umpires. The fact is that trials showed that the system improved player behaviour and led to a significant reduction in the number of umpiring errors.”Technology available for the third umpire

Slow motion replays

Super slow motion replays

Ultra motion camera replays

Sound from the stump microphones with the replays at normal speed and slow motion

Approved ball tracking technology

The mat, generated by the provider of ball tracking technology, not by the broadcaster

Hot Spot cameras

In addition, other forms of technology may be used subject to ICC being satisfied that the required standards of accuracy and time efficiency can be met.

The system allows each team two unsuccessful reviews per innings, which can be escalated to the third umpire. The ICC had initially trialled three reviews per innings but reduced it to two, based on feedback from players. The system received mixed reviews from players and experts, but one of its firm backers is Aleem Dar, the ICC’s umpire of the year. “I think it will help reduce the chances of mistakes made on the field,” he said. “I support the introduction of this system…It’s a tough job out there nowadays, and the review system is helpful for the umpires.”His colleague Billy Bowden said in his report to the ICC that a wrong decision didn’t play on his mind or affect his performance for the rest of the game. “From an umpires point of view I embraced it, lived it and loved it,” Bowden said. “It gave me confidence to make good, strong umpiring decisions and I did not fall in to the trap of relying on the UDRS to bail me out. I felt in control, relaxed and happy umpiring in the Tests every day.”I had two decisions reversed in my two Tests. I didn’t lose confidence but instead felt good that the right decision was made. It also gave me strength to get back in the zone again and concentrate on the next ball knowing I wouldn’t be criticised in the papers the next day.”The UDRS was first used in the Sri Lanka-India Test series last year. The ICC announced in June that the review system would be implemented from October. Due to the non-settlement over who would bear the costs (national boards or broadcasters) UDRS was scrapped for the ongoing India-Sri Lanka Tests, will not be used for the South Africa-England Test series.

Liverpool fans react to possible Klopp hint

A number of Liverpool supporters believe Jurgen Klopp may have hinted at extending his stay as Reds manager beyond 2024.

Liverpool return to action on Saturday evening, welcoming an in-form Arsenal side to Anfield. It has the potential to be a thrilling encounter on Merseyside, with Mikel Arteta’s team winning their last three league games in a row.

Not only that, but the Reds lost 3-2 away to West Ham in their last league outing and also dropped two points at home to Brighton, raising doubts over their title aspirations and making this a massive contest.

Ahead of Saturday’s game, in his pre-match press conference [via James Pearce on Twitter], Klopp discussed his future and admitted his time at Anfield is still “far away from being over.”

The German’s current Liverpool deal runs until the summer of 2024 but the hope is of course that he stays well beyond that date, considering his brilliance as manager and the success he has enjoyed.

Knowles rushes Warriors to victory

Western Australia completed their domination of South Australia with a 104-run win that moved them off the bottom of the table

Brad Knowles ensured a quick kill with the final three wickets in two overs•Getty ImagesWestern Australia completed their domination of South Australia with a 104-run win that moved them off the bottom of the table. The Redbacks made a decent start in their pursuit of 351 for victory but lost 5 for 9 to be all out for 246, allowing the Warriors to leapfrog them on the way to third. The fast bowler Brad Knowles was responsible for the quick finish by picking up the final three wickets, including the lbw of the last-man-out Cullen Bailey, who hung on for almost half an hour without scoring. Knowles walked off with 4 for 33 while Steve Magoffin and Aaron Heal had two wickets each.Western Australia risked their strong position by setting up the run-chase after the hosts closed their first innings 152 behind on Sunday, but they remained on top on the final day. After losing James Smith without adding to his overnight 26, South Australia relied on Daniel Harris and Michael Klinger to set the platform in the hope they could build quickly later on. Harris reached a cautious 42 while Klinger accelerated towards the end of his 60 in partnership with Mark Cosgrove. However, when Klinger and Cosgrove (47) fell to Magoffin in consecutive overs the Redbacks were 4 for 179 and their best hope was a draw. Heal and Knowles ended those dreams pretty quickly.

West Ham fans flock to Niklas Stark update

Flocking to Twitter, some West Ham United fans have shared their takes as an exciting update emerges involving Hertha Berlin defender Niklas Stark.

Club mainstay Angelo Ogbonna’s anterior cruciate ligament injury has been at the centre of discussion since he sustained the problem in West Ham’s 3-2 win over Liverpool prior to the international break

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Italian had previously started every 2021/22 Premier League game for David Moyes and was untouchable on the Hammers’ team sheet, but they had to cope without his presence for the first time this season against Wolves on Saturday.

West Ham slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Molineux and never really got going as Raul Jimenez consigned the Irons to their first loss since early October.

Ogbonna has now undergone successful surgery as he begins his recovery, yet all eyes are now on who could jump in his stead, with Moyes apparently set to be backed in the January transfer window (Evening Standard).

Links to Burnley defender James Tarkowksi and Stark have emerged recently, but Sport 1 reporter Florian Pettenberg has now dropped an exciting update on the latter.

The German source claims that talks have now ‘taken place’ for the 26-year-old, who is personally ‘interested’ in the idea of joining West Ham (Twitter).

Moyes is also a personal admirer of the centre-half and Hertha want to do a deal in January, especially considering that Stark’s contract is set to expire in 2022 as things stand.

West Ham fans react…

Reacting to this exciting development, some West Ham fans have dropped a diverse range of takes on social media, with one supporter even branding Stark an ‘upgrade’ on Ogbonna.

According to WhoScored, when comparing both players, the stats actually support this theory, with Hertha’s mainstay averaging a superior rate of tackles, interceptions and clearances per 90 over the 33-year-old Hammers centre-back.

However, another Irons supporter feels that Moyes’ current crop in Issa Diop and Craig Dawson are actually better options than Stark.

Haryana, Andhra cruise into semi-finals

A round-up of the third day’s play from the sixth round of matches in the Ranji Trophy Plate League

Cricinfo staff10-Dec-2009
Scorecard
Kerala more than doubled their first-innings total the second time around but it still wasn’t enough to prevent an innings defeat against Haryana inside three days. They began the third day on 35 for 3, trailing by 254 runs in the follow-on, and the middle-order batsmen got off to starts, unlike in the first innings which collapsed for 93. However, none of them got to fifty and Sanjay Budhwar had three batsmen caught behind on the way to a five-wicket haul. Budhwar finished with 5 for 69 while Amit Mishra took 3 for 71. Kerala were dismissed for 205, giving Haryana victory by an innings and 85 runs. The result ensured Harayana finished top of Group B and qualified for the semi-finals of the Plate League.
Scorecard
Andhra also cruised into the semi-finals of the Plate League from Group B after crushing Jammu and Kashmir by ten wickets at Anantapur. Syed Sahabuddin took 4 for 55 while DP Vijaykumar and D Shivkumar claimed three each to help dismiss Jammu and Kashmir for 192 during the follow on. Abid Nabi, who resisted for 116 deliveries at No. 9, was the innings’ top-scorer with 54. Andhra were left a target of only 22, which the openers knocked off in 2.3 overs.
Scorecard
Fog and bad light curtailed the third day’s play to 34 overs in Agartala and during that time Goa reduced Tripura to 150 for 4 from their overnight total of 44 for no loss. Rajib Saha, who made 51, and Wilkin Mota added 73 for the first wicket before Robin d’Souza trapped Mota lbw. Saha and Abhijit Dey added another 60 for the second wicket before Amit Yadav struck three quick blows to jolt the middle order. Yadav ended the day on 17 for 3.
Scorecard
Arlen Konwar took 5 for 59 to give Assam a terrific chance of securing a large first-innings lead against Vidarbha in Guwahati. Assam declared on their overnight score of 392 for 8 and Konwar made good use of the early morning conditions. Abu Nechim provided the first breakthrough, dismissing Amol Ubarhande for 16, but it was Konwar who took the other five wickets. Vidarbha were struggling at 71 for 4 at one stage, but were lifted by Ranjit Paradkar who scored an unbeaten half-century. Amit Paunikar made 43 but Vidarbha were reduced to 180 for 6 at stumps.
Scorecard
A strong performance from Rajasthan in the second innings helped them wipe out a first-innings deficit against Jharkhand and take a lead on the third day in Dhanbad. However, with only one day remaining, the most likely result is a draw. Jharkhand declared on 368 for 9 in their first innings, after centuries from Manish Vardhan and Saurabh Tiwary had taken them to a position of strength on the second evening. Rajasthan were facing a deficit of 122 when they began their second innings and they lost both openers after scoring only 17 runs. Vineet Saxena and Nitin Doru, however, added an unbroken 180-run stand for the third wicket to keep Jharkhand’s bowlers at bay.

Sky Sports reporter on Palace’s January plans

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira will believe his squad is relatively light on numbers as the January transfer window approaches, according to Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge.

What’s the story?

The 45-year-old oversaw an extensive squad rebuild over the summer, with several young, exciting acquisitions replacing multiple experienced campaigners.

However, Bridge stated in a recent interview that Vieira is likely to want further reinforcements over the coming months despite their strong start to the season.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “How much they do in January, I don’t know. I think Palace look pretty settled at the moment, but if Patrick Vieira was on this call, he’d say he was probably a bit light.”

Crystal Palace fans will be intrigued

Although it’s unlikely that the Eagles will add extensively in January, Bridge’s latest revelation will be an intriguing one for the club’s supporters.

Gaps at right-wing, central midfield and right-back are evident throughout Vieira’s first-team squad, especially with Conor Gallagher expected to return to parent club Chelsea at the end of the campaign and age to finally catch up with the likes of Joel Ward and James McArthur.

Therefore, the capital club’s fanbase are likely to be eager for additional acquisitions over the next couple of transfer windows as they look to continue their recent progression.

Although Palace have only won three of their 12 Premier League fixtures to date, their performances have been extremely promising, and famous victories over Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have illustrated their potential.

Securing the signatures of two or three more talented stars would have the potential to propel Vieira’s charges even further up the top-flight table and provide hope of a top-half finish for the first time since 2014/15.

It remains to be seen whether chairman Steve Parish can find enough room in Palace’s budget to dip back into the transfer market over the winter, but the fanbase will be eagerly anticipating their next move. The club’s chairman and Vieira simply have to act to propel them to the next level.

And, in other news…Forget Kouyate: Palace’s “clever” £6.3m-rated maestro must be unleashed amid big blow
